Rivington, St. PauFs Church-Yard, London, and all other Boohellera. 1SI6. IV\[:r,,40O PREFACE. *' The Psalms are an " Epitome of the Bible, adapted " to the purpose of devotion. "They are, for this purpose, " adorned with the figures, and ** set oif with all the graces of " poetry ; and poetry itself is ^^ designed yet farther to be re- " commended by the charms of " music ; thus consecrated to VI " the service of God ; that so, " delight may prepare the way " for inaprovement, and plea- " sure become the handmaid of "wisdom, while every turbu- " lent passion is calmed by sa- " cred melody, and the evil spi- " rit is still dispossessed by the " harp of the son of Jesse."'^ The character thus ascribed to them by a late pious and ami able prelate of our church, is undoubtedly true, when they are used in the public service of the christian temple ; and the * Preface to Home's Commentary oo the Book of Psalmi, vu feelings of every sincere w^or- shipper bear inward testimony to its truth. But the case is very much altered, when they are daily, and literally, and «n- c?i«crfwim«#e^t/ repeated, by the solitary christian in his closet, as the language and vehicle of his secret thoughts, addressed to *' his Father who seeth in " secret ;" and it has been the honest complaint of many sin cere believers, whose minds are not satisfied with dry formali ties, but whose wish it is to " pray with the spirit, and \o TUl " pray with the understanding also ;" that in repeating the Psalms of David, as exercises of private devotion, the even flow of their sentiments is often rufiled and disturbed by the • sudden intervention of such ex pressions as they cannot rightly comprehend. By the bold as sumption of such innocence and integrity, as they dare not pre tend to ; by the frequent men tion of such enmities, and such persecutions as they are not concerned with ; by such invo cations of vengeance, as shock IX their moral feelings, and which, though they are instructed to consider as predictions, yet they cannot reconcile with the spirit of christian prayer ; by the al lusions to such military glories and ferocities, and to such worldly blessings, and tempo ral rewards, as evidently, do not belong to the gospel dispen sation. And that although in reciting such passages, as are plainly prophetic of the great Messiah, of his divine character, and his gracious offices, they find unspeakable comfort and satisfaction, yet they are conti nually encountering other pas sages, whose interpretation is clouded by obscurity ; and the question of the devout eunuch of Ethiopia is frequently obtru ding itself upon them. " Of whom speaketh the prophet this ? of himself, or of some other man ? Is it David? or is it Christ ? or is it the church of Christ, that we are to consi der as the proper object of this victory, or this deliverance, or this persecution ?" Before they can turn over the pages of an- XI notators and expositors, to sa tisfy, or at least to silence their enquiries, they perceive that the warmth of adoration, with which their minds were melting, is cooled ; the devout impression is rendered more faint ; and above all, the ap plication to their own cases and consciences is almost destroyed. Such is their complaint ; w^hich although I have always found some difficulty in answering to their satisfaction, or indeed en tirely to my own ; yet there appeared to be an easy method, 6 XU by which the grounds of it might be effectually removed. .Tn pursuing this method, I have ventured to select such whole Psalms, and such por tions of others, as were almost, if not entirely free from these objections ; every word of which might with very little hesitation, be adopted and ap propriated, by the worshipper in his closet, as the expression of his own real and immediate thoughts ; and thus, by substi tuting clear ideas for magniji' cent but uncertain sounds, xm that act of devotion would be come a prayer, w^hich other wise might be little better than an incantation. This selection is here ar ranged into separate divisions, entirely for private use ; in the hope, that each of them, when daily recited, may afford an undisturbed assistance to the ex ercise of holy affections, and to the secret and necessary du ties of penitence and self abase ment ; and that the reasonable mind may thus be enabled to 7 XIV accompany the pious heart, in uttering its honest emotions of gratitude, and praise^ and godly resignation. Although the words of this Selection are copied from the Psalms of the Prayer Book, as being more familiar, yet a liberty has been taken of substituting some words from the Bible Version ; and also of introducing some such slight alterations as were necessary to preserve the connexion of sen tences, and to suit them with the private application that ivas intended, such as — "From the heart," m- stead of " Upon the harp." — " Sins and iniquities," instead of" foes and enemies." — " Lord of heaven," instead of " Lord of Hosts." FIRST DAY. Ponder my words, Ohl Lord consider my meditation. Oh ! hearken unto the voice of my calling ; my King, and my God ; for unto thee will I make my prayer. My voice shalt thou hear betimes. Oh ! Lord : early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. Thou art the God, that hast no pleasure in wickedness : neither shall any evil dwell with thee. Such as be foolish shall not stand in thy sight: for thou hatest all them that work vanity. But let all them, that put their trust in thee, rejoice: they shall ever be giving of thanks, because thou defendest tbem ; they that love thy name shall be joyful in thee. For thou. Lord, wilt give thy blessing unto the righteous : and with thy favouraWe kindness, wilt thou defend them, as with a shield. #sfaim 6. OH ! Lord, rebuke me not in thine in dignation: neither chasten me in thy heavy displeasure. Have mercy upon me. Oh ! Lord, for I am Aveak ; Oh ! Lord, heal me for my bones are vexed. My soul also is sore troubled : but. Lord how long wilt thou punish me ? Turn thee. Oh ! Lord, and deliver my soul : Oh ! save me, for thy mercy's sake. For in death no man remembereth thee: and who will give thee thanks in the pit ? I am weary of my groaning ; every night wash I my bed: and water my couch with my tears. My beauty is gone for very trouble : and worn away because of mine adversities. But — away from me all workings of vanity ! for the Lord hath heard tbe voice of my weeping. The Lord hath heard my petition : th« Lord will receive my prayer. OH ! Lord, our governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world : thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens ! Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength against thine enemies : that thou mightest still the enemy and avenger. When I consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers : the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained, A 2 What is man — ^that thou art mitidful of him ? or the son of man^ that thou visitest him ? Thou madest him lower than the angels: to crown him with glory and worship. Thou makest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands : and hast put all things in subjection under his feet. All sheep and oxen : yea and the beasts of the field; The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea : and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. Oh ! Lord, our governor ! how excellent is thy name, in all the world ! How long wilt thou forget me, Lord ? for ever ? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me ? How long shall I seek counsel in my soul. and be so vexed in my heart ? how long shall my iniquities triumph over me ? Consider, and hear me. Oh ! Lord my God : lighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death. Then shall my trust be ever in thy mercy: and my heart shall be joyful in thy salvation. Preserve rae. Oh ! God : for in thee have I put my trust. Oh ! my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord: thou art my God, my goods are nothing unto thee. All thy delight is upon the saints that are in the earth : and upon such as excel in virtue. But they that run after another God shall have great trouble. I will thank the Lord, for giving me warning: my reins also chasten me in tbe night season. A 3 I have set God always before me : for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall. Wherefore my heart was glad and my glory rejoiced : my flesh also shall rest it* hope. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell : neither shalt thou suffer thine holy one to see corruption. Thou shalt shew me the path of life ; in thy presence is the fulness of joy: and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore. SECOND DAT. X WILL love thee, Oh ! Lord, my strength r the Lord is my stony rock, and my defence : my Saviour, my God, and my might, in whom I will trust : my buckler, the horn also of my salvation, and my refuge. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to he praised : so shall I be safe from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me: and the overflowings of ungodliness made me afi'aid. The pains of hell came about me : the snares of death overtook me. In my trouble I will call upon the Lord ; and complain unto my God. So shall he hear my voice out of his holy habitation : and my complaint shall come before him, it shall enter even into his ears. 3^3SfaIm i9» The heavens declare the glory of God : and the firmament sheweth his handy work. One day telleth another : and one night certifieth another. There is neither speech nor language, where these voices are not heard among them. Their sound is gone out into all lands : and their words unto the ends of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun : which goeth forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber ; and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course. It goeth forth from the uttermost part of tbe heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again : and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, and en dureth for ever : the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey from the honey-comb. Moreover by them is thy servant taught : and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can tell how oft he offendeth : Oh ! cleanse thou me from my .secret faults. Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me : so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great ofience. Let the words of my mouth, and the medi tations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight : Oh ! Lord, my strength and my redeemer. ^jsfaim 23» The Lord is my shepherd : therefore can. I lack nothing. 10 He shall feed me in gi'een pastures : and lead me forth besides the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul : and bring me forward in the paths of righteousness, for his name's sake. ' Yea, tho' I walk thro' the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil : for thou art with me, thy rod, and thy stafi" comfort me. Thy loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life : and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.. ^jJalm 24» The earth is the Lord's and all therein i&: the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas : and prepared it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord : or who shall rise up in his holy place ? Even they that have clean hands, and 11 pure hearts : and that have not given up their minds to vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. They shall receive the blessing from the Lord : and righteousness from the God of their salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him : even of them that seek thy face. Oh ! God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, Oh ! ye gates, and be ye lift ye everlasting doors : and the king of gloiy shall come in. Who is the king of glory : it is th« Lord, strong and mighty, even the Lord, mighty in all things. Lift your heads. Oh ! ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors : and the king of glory shall come in. Who is the king of glory : even the Lord of heaven, he is the king of glory. 12 THIRD DAY. ^Mm 25. Unto thee^ Oh ! Lord, do I lift up my soul ; my God, I have put my trust in thee : Oh ! let me not be confounded, neither let mine iniquities triumph over me. All they that hope in thee, shall never be ashamed : but they that transgress without a cause, shall be put to confusion. Shew me thy ways. Oh ! Lord : and teach me thy paths. Lead me forward in thy truth, and learn me : for thou art the God of my salvation ; in thee hath been my hope, all the day long. Call to remembrance. Oh ! Lord, thy tender mercies : and thy loving kindnesses, which have been ever of old. Oh ! remember not the sins and offences of my youth : but according to thy mercy, think thou upou me. Oh ! Lord, for thy goodness. 13 Gracious and righteous is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. Them that are meek shall he guide in judgment : and such as are gentle, them will he learn his way. All the paths of the Lord are mercy and trath ; unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. For thy name's sake Oh ! Lord : be mer ciful unto my sin for it is great ! The secret of the Lord is among them that fear him: and he will shew them his covenant. Mine eyes are ever looking unto the Lord : for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Oh ! turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me : for I am desolate and in misery. The sorrows of my heart are enlarged : Oh ! bring thou me out of my troubles. Look upon my adversity and misery : and forgive me all my sin. Oh! keep my soul, and deliver me: let 14 me not be confounded, for I have put my trust in thee. Let perfectness and righteous dealing wait upon me : and let thy servant be delivered out of all his troubles. 3|5^aim 27. The Lord is my light, and my salvation ; "whom then shall I fear: the Lord is the strength of my life ; of whom then shall I be afraid? For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his tabernacle: yea, in the secret place of his dw^elling shall he hitle, and set jne up upon a rock of stone. And now shaK he lift my head, above all the temptations that surround me. Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness : I will sing, and speak praises unto the Lord. Hearken unto my voice. Oh ! Lord when I cry unto thee : have mercy upon me, and hear me. 15 When thou hast said, seek ye my face : my heart hath said unto thee; thy face, Lord, will I seek. Oh ! hide not thy face from me: nor cast away thy servant in displeasure. Thou hast been my succour : leave me not, neither forsake me, Oil ! God of my sal vation ! When my father and my mother shall forsake me : the Lord will take me up. Teach rae thy way. Oh ! Lord : and lead me in the right way, because of my infirmities. I should utterly have fainted: but that I believe verily to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Oh! tariy thou the Lord's leisure: be strong and he shall comfort thine heart, anil put thou thy trust in the Lord. ^^alm 30. I will magnify thee. Oh ! Lord, for thou, hast set me up : and not made my sins to triumph over rae. B 2 IG Oh ! Lord, my God, I cried Unto thee : and thou hast healed me. Thou Lord, hast brought my soul out of hell : thou hast kept my life from them that go doAvn to the pit. Sing praises unto the Lord, Oh ! ye saints of bis : and give thanks unto him for a remem- l}rfmce of his holiness. For his wrath endureth but the twinkling (if au eye, and in his pleasure is life: heavi ness may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. In my prosperity, I said, I shall never be moved : thou. Lord, of thy goodness, hast made my hill so strong. But thou didst turn thy face from me ; and I was troubled. Then cried I unto thee Oh ! Lord : and gat me to my Lord right humbly. What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit ? Shall the dust give thanks unto thee : or shall it declare thy truth ? 17 Hear, Oh ! Lord, and have mercy upon me : Lord, be thou my helper. !^^alm 3u Then will I be glad and rejoice in thy mercy : for that thou hast considered my trouble, and hast known my soul in adversities. Oh ! be thou my strong rock, and house of defence : that thou mayest save me. Yea !; — thou art my strong rock, and my castle : be thou also my guide, and lead me for thy name's sake. Into thy hands I do commend my spirit : for thou hast redeemed me. Oh ! Lord, thovj- God of truth. -?57i' 18 FOURTH DAY, 3^^alm 34. JL Will alway give thanks unto the Lord : his praise shall be cA^er in ray mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord : the humble shall consider, and be glad. I sought the Lord, and he heard me : yea, he delivered me out of all my fear. They that have an eye unto him, are lightened ; and their faces are not ashamed. Lo ! the poor crieth, aud the Lord hear eth him : yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord tarrieth round about them that fear him : and dellvereth them. Oh ! taste and see how gracious the Lord is : blessed are all they that pnt their trust in biiu. 19 Oh ! fear the Lord, all ye his servants : for they that fear him lack nothing. The lions do lack, and suffer hunger ; but thiey who fear the Lord, shall want no manner of thing that is good. Come ye, his children, and hearken unto his word : and that will teach you the fear which he requireth. Keep thy tongue from evil : and thy lips that they speak no guile. Eschew evil, and do good : seek peace, and ensue it. The eyes of the Lord are over the righ teous : and his ears are open unto their prayers. But the countenance of the Lord is against them that do evil : to root out the remem brance of them for ever. The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth them : and dellvereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart : and will save such as be of an humble spirit. 20 Great are the troubles of tbe righteous : but the Lord dellvereth them out of all. He keepeth all their bones : so that not one of them is broken. Yea, the Lord dellvereth the souls of his servants: and all they that put their trust in him, shall not be destitute. pMm 38. Put me not to rebuke Oh ! Lord, in thine anger : neither chasten, me in thy heavy dis- pleasure. For thine arrows stick fast in me : and thine baud presseth me sore. There is no health in my flesh, because of thy displeasure : neither is there any rest in my bones, by reason of my sin. My wickednesses are gone over my head : and are, like a sore burden, too heavy for me to bear. I am brought into so great trouble and misery: that I go mourning all the day long. 21 I am feeble, and sore smitten : and great is the disquietness of my heart. Lord ! thou knowest all my desire : and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength hath fail ed me : and the sight of mine eyes is gone from me. My lovers and my neighbours did stand looking upon my trouble : and my kinsmen stood afar off. But in thee Oh ! Lord, have I put my trust : thou shalt answer for me. Oh ! Lord my God. For although I truly am set in the plague : and my heaviness is ever in my sight ; Yet, when I confess my wickedness : and am sorry for my sin ; Thou wilt not forsake me Oh ! Lord my God : thou wilt not be far fi-om me. Oh ! haste thee to help me : Lord God of my salvation. •s*? FIFTH DAY. 3^iSfalm 40, J. Waited patiently for the Lord : and he inclined unto me, and Beard my calling. He brought me also out of the horrible pit; out oF the mire and clayr and set my feet upon the rock, and ordered my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth : even a thanksgiving unto our God^ Many shall see it, and fear : and learn tp put their trust in the Lord. Oh ! Lord my God, great are the wond rous works which thou hast done ; like as be thy thoughts which be to us-ward : and there., is no one that ordereth them unto thee. If I should declare them, and speak of them : they should be more than I am able tO; express. 23 Sacrifice and meat-offering thou wouldest not : but mine ears hast thou opened. Burnt-offerings, and sacrifice for sin, hast thou not required : then said I, lo, I come. In the volume of the book it is written of me, that I should fulfil thy will Oh ! my God : I am content to do it ; yea thy law is within my heart. Yet have I not hidden thy righteousness within my heart : my talk of thy truth, and of thy salvation. And I have not refrained from confessing thy loving mercy and truth ; in the great con gregation. Withdraw not thou thy mercy from me. Oh ! Lord : let thy loving kindness, and thy truth alway preserve me. For innumerable troubles are come about me : my sins have taken such hold upon me that I am not able to look up : yea, they are more in number than the hairs of my head ; and my heart hath failed me.. Oh ! Lord ! let it be thy pleasure to de liver me : make haste, CJh ! Lor-d, to help me. 24 And let all those that seek thee be joy ful and glad in thee : let such, as love thy sal vation, say alway, the Lord be praised ! As for me, I am poor and needy : but the Lord careth for me. Thou art my helper, and redeemer : make no long tarrying. Oh ! my God ! ^iSaUn 42. Like as the hart desireth the water brooks : so longeth my soul after thee. Oh ! God. My soul is athirst for God, yea even for the living God : when I come to appear before the presence of God ? My tears have been my meat day and night: whilst temptation saith daily unto me, where is now thy God ? Now when I think thereupon, I pour out my heart by myself : and I go also with the multitude, and join with them iii the house of God, In the voice of praise and thanksgiving : among such as keep thy holy-day. 25 Why art thou so full of heaviness, Oh ! my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within me ? Put thy trust in God : for I will yet give him thanks for the help of his countenance. The Lord hath granted his loving kind ness in the day-time : and in the night season did I sing of him, and made my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto the God of my strength, why hast thou forgotten me : and why go I thus heavily, whilst the enemy oppresseth me ? I^jsfallm 43. Give thy sentence within me. Oh ! God, and defend the cause of my soul : Oh ! deliver me from deceitful and wicked thoughts. Oh ! send out thy light, and thy truth, that they may lead me : and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling. That I may go unto the altar of God, even the God of my joy and gladness : and •26 from the heart will I give thanks unto thee, Oh ! Lord, my God ! Why art thou so heavy, Oh ! my soul : and why art thou so disquieted within me ? Oh ! put thy trust in God: for I will give him thanks, who is the help of my counte nance, and my God. 3^^alm 45. My heart is inditing of a good matter : I speak of the things which pertain unto the King. My tongue is as the pen of a ready writer. Thou art fairer than the children of men : full of grace are thy lips, because God hath blessed thee for ever. Gird thee with thy sword upon thy thigh. Oh ! thou most mighty : according to thy worship and renown. Good success have thou with thine ho nour: ride on prosperously in the cause of 27 truth, of meekness, and righteousness; aud thy right hand shall teach thee wonderful things. Thine arrows are very sharp, and the people shall be subdued unto thee : even amidst the scorn and the madness of thint; enemies. Thy throne. Oh ! King, endureth for ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a rigbt sceptre. Thou hast loved righteousDess, and hated iniquity : wherefore, God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Thy name shall be reraember'd in all generations : and thy people shall give thanks unto thee for ever and ever. c 2 28 SIXTH DAY. ^^isfaim 51. JriAVE mercy upon me Oh ! God, after thy great goodness : according to the multitude of thy mercies, do away mine offences. Wash me throughly from my wickedness : and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults : and my iniquity is ever before me. Against thee only do we sin, and our evil is done in thy sight : therefore thou wilt be justified, when thou speakest (our doom) and clear, when thou judgest us. Thou, Lord, requirest truth in the inward parts : Oh ! make me to understand wisdom secretly. Cleanse me with thy sprinkling, and I shall be clean ; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 29 Make me to hear of joy and gladness : that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn thy face from my sins : and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart. Oh ! God : and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence : and take not thy holy spirit from ine. Oh ! give me the comfort of thy help again : and stablish me with thy free spirit. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked : and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Thou shalt open my lips. Oh ! Lord : and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Thou desirest no sacrifice, else Avould I give it thee : but thou delightest not in burnt offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit : a broken and contrite hearty Oh ! God, thou wilt not despise. c 3 30 ^ififalm 62. My soul truly waiteth still upon God : for of him cometh my salvation. He verily is my strength and my salva tion : he is my defence, so that I shall not greatly fall. Therefore, my soul, wait thou only upon God : for all my expectation is from him. In God is my health and my glory : the rock of my might, and in God is my trust. Oh ! put your trust in him alway, ye people : pour out your hearts before him, for God is our hope. As for the children of men they are but vanity : the children of men are deceitful upon tbe weights ; they are altogether lighter than vanity itself. Oh 1 trust not in wrong and robbeiy : give not yourselves unto vanity : if riches in- crease, set not your hearts upon them, God hath spoken once, and these two things have I heard ; — that power belongeth 31 unto God — and that thou, Oh ! God, art mer ciful. For thou rewardest every man : according to his work. ^^alm 63. Oh ! God ; my true and only God : early will I seek thee. My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh long eth after thee : in this barren and dry land, where no water is. Thus earnestly do I look for thee in ho liness : that I may behold thy power aud gloiy. For thy loving kindness is better than life itself: therefore my lips shall praise thee. As long as I live, will I magnify thee on this manner : and lift np my hands in thy name. My soul shall be satisfied, as it were with marrow and fatness : whilst my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips. 3!? Have I not reniembered thee in my bed : and thought upon thee when I was waking? Because thou hast been my helper: therc- foi-fe, under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. ^Mm 66. Oh ! be joyful in God, all ye lands : sing praises to the honour of his name ; make his praise to be glorious. Say ye unto God, Oh ! how wonderful art thou in thy works : through the greatness of thy power, shall all those that oppose thee be found liars against thee. For all the world should worship thee : sing of thee„ and praise thy name. Oh! consider, and behold the works of God ; how wonderful he is in his doing to wards the children of men. He ruleth them with his power for ever; his eyes behold the people : and such as will 33 not believe, ^hall not be able to exalt them selves. He holdeth our soul in life : and suffereth jiot our feet to slip. And thou, Oh! God, has proved us : thou also has tried us like as silver is tried. (Yea, thou hast tried us in the furnace of adversity : and proved us at the waters of strife.) (That thou mightest deliver us from the power of evil : and do us good at our latter end.) ¦ If we incline unto wickedness with our hearts : the Lord will not hear us. Therefore will we go into his house with the sacrifice of righteousness : and will per form to him the vows, which we promised with our lips, and spake with our mouths when we were in trouble. 34 SEYENTH DAT. ^^atm 71- In thee. Oh ! Lord have I put my tnist, let me never be put to confusion : but rid me, and deliver me in thy righteousness; incline thine ear unto me, and save mc Be thou my strong hold whereunto I may alway resort : thou hast promised to help me, for thou art my house of defence and my castle. Thou, Oh ! Lord God, art the thing that I long for : thou art my hope, even from iny youth. Through thee have I been holden up evei- since I was born : thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb ; my praise shall ba always of thee. I am become, as it were, a monster unto many : but my sure trust is in thee. 35 Oh ! let my mouth be filled with thy praise: that I may sing of thy glory and ho nour all the day long. Cast me not away in the time of age : forsake me not, wlienmy strength faileth me. Go not far from me. Oh ! God : my God haste thee to help me. For I will patiently abide alway : and will praise thee more aud more. My mouth shall daily speak of thy righ teousness and salvation : for I know no end thereot I will go forth in the strength of the Lord God : and will make mention of thy righteous ness only. Thou, Oh ! God, hast taught me from my youth np until now : therefore will I think upon thy wondrous works. Oh ! what great troubles and adversities hast thou -shewed me ! and yet didst thou com fort and refresh me : yea, and broughtest me from the deep of the earth again. Therefore will I praise thee, and thy 36 faithfulness, Oh ! God : and in my heart will I sing unto thee, Oh ! thou holy one of Israel. My lips will be fain, when I confess thy mercies : and so will my soul, whom thou hast delivered. I Avill cry unto God with my voice : even unto God will I cry with my voice, and he shall hearken unto me. When I am in heaviness, I will think upon God : when my heart is vexed, I will complain. Thou boldest mine eyes waking : I am so feeble, that I cannot speak, I have considered the days of old : and the years that are past. I call to remembrarce my song: and in the night, I commune with mine own heart, and search out my spirits. Will the Lord a.bsent himself for ever : and will he be no more intreated ? 37 Is his mercy clean gone for ever: and is his promise come utterly to an end for ever more ? Then said I it is mine own infirmity : but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most, High. I will remember thy works. Oh ! Lord : and call to mind thy wonders of old time. I will think also of all thy former works : and ray talking shall be of thy doings. For although thy way is in the sea, and thy paths in the great waters : and thy foot steps are not known ; Yet didst thou lead thy people like sheep: and cany them in the wilderness like a flock. ^^^alrn 84. Oh! how amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of heaven and earth ! My soul hath a desire and longing to en- D 38 ter into the courts of the Lord : ttiy heart and my flesh rejoice in presence of the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest, where she may lav her young: even thy altars. Oh ! Lord of all things, my King and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: tbey will always be praising thee. Blessed are they, whose strength is in thee : in Avhose heart are thy ways. Who going through this vale of misery, find therein a well : whose pools are filled with living water. We will go on from strength to strength : and before the God of Gods appeareth every one of us in Sion, Behold Oh ! God, our defender : and look upon us for the sake of thine anointed. For one day in thy courts : is better than a thousand. I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God : than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 39 For the Lord God is a light and defeoce: tbe Lord will give grace and glory; and no good thing will he withhold from them that live a godly life. Oh! Lord God of righteousness: blessed is the raan, that putteth his trust in thee ! Waim 86. Bow down thine ear. Oh ! Lord, and hear me : for I am poor, and in miseiy. Preserve thou my soul, and keep it inno cent: my God, save thy servant, that putteth his trust in thee. Be merciful unto me. Oh ! Lord : for I will call daily upon thee. Comfort the soul of thy servant : for unto thee. Oh ! Lord, do I lift up my soul. For thou. Lord, art good and gracious ; and of great mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Give ear. Lord, unto my prayer : and ponder the words of my humble desires. D 2 In the time of ray trouble, I will call npow thee : for thou hearest me. Among the Gods there is none like unla thee Oh! Lord: there is not one that can do as thou doest : All nations, whom thou hast made, shall come, and worship thee Oh ! Lord : and shall glorify thy name. For thou art great, and doest wondrous things : thou art God alone. Teach me thy way. Oh ! Lord, and I will Avalk in thy truth : Oh ! knit my heart unto thee, that I may fear thy name. I will thank thee. Oh ! Lord my God, with all my heart : and will praise thy name for evermore. For great is thy mercy towards me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the nether most hell. Thou Ob ! Lord God, art full of compas sion and mercy : long-suffering, plenteous in goodness and truth. Oh ! turn thee unto me, and have mercy : 41 give thy strength unto thy servant, and help me in the time of need. Shew some token upon me for good, that they, who would hurt me, may see it, and be ashamed : because thou. Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me. P 3 42 EIGHTH DAY. ^sfaJm 88. Oh ! Lord, God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee : Oh ! let my prayer enter into thy presence, incline thine ear unto my calling. For my soul is full of trouble : and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. I am counted as one of them that go down to the pit; and I have been even as a thing that hath no strength. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit : ia a place of darkness and in the deep. Thine indignation lieth hard upon me : and thou hast vexed me with all thy storms. My lovers and ray friends hast thou put away from me : and hid my acquaintance out of my sight. 43- But, Lord, I have called daily upon thee: I have lifted up my hands unto thee. Dost thou shew wonders among the dead : or shall the dead rise up, and praise thee 5 Shall thy loving kindness be shewed in the grave : or thy faithfulness in destniction ? Shall thy wondrous works be known in the dark: or thy righteousness in the land where all things are forgotten ? Unto thee have I cried Oh ! Lord : and early shall my prayer come before thee. Lord why abhorrest thou my soul : and liidest thy face from me I I am in misery, and like unto one that is- at the point to die : even from my youth up^ thy terrors have I snfered with a troubled mind.. 3^^aim 90* But thou. Oh ! Lord ! shall be ray refuge: from one generation to another. For before the mountains were brought 44 forth^ or ever the earth and the world were made: thou art God from everlasting, and world without end. Thou turnest man to destruction: and then thou sayest, ' come again, ye children of men.' A thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday : seeing they are past, as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away, as with a flood, they are as a sleep of the morning: and they fade away suddenly like the grass ; In the morning, green, and growing up r in the evening, cat down, dried up, and Avithered. Thus we consume away in thy displeasure : and are afraid at thy wrathful indignation. For thou hast set our misdeeds before thee : and our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. The days of our age are threescore years aud ten ; and though some be so strong, that they come to fourscore years : yet is their 45 strength then but labour and sorrow ; so soon passeth it away, -and we are gone. Oh ! teach me so to number my days : th.1t I may apply ray heart unto wisdora. Turn thee again Oh ! Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servant. Oh I satisfy me with thy mercy, and that soon : so shall 1 rejoice, and be glad, all the- days of my life. Comfort me again, according to the time that thou hast afflicted me : and to the years, wherein I have suffered adversity. Prosper thou the work of my hands upon me : and let me not be disappointed of my glorious hope. I^jsfaim 94* Blessed are they whom thou chasteneth Oh ! Lord : and teachest them in thy law. That thou mayest give them patience in time of adversity : whilst the pit is- digged up for the ungodly. 46 For the Lord will not fail his people : neither will he forsake those who continue stedfast la his covenant. But judgment shall return unto righteous ness : and all such as are true in heart shall follow it. Who will ri.se up for me against the wicked : or who will take ray part against the evil doers ? Unless the Lord had been my help : my soul had almost dwelt in silence. But when I said my foot slippeth : thy raercy, Oh ! Lord, held rae up. In the multitude of the sorrows that I had in my heart : thy comforts have refresh ed my soul. i)^alin 97. The Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof: yea, the multitude of the isles may be glad thereof. Clouds and darkness are round about him : 47 righteousness and judgment are the habitation of hi« seat, A fire goeth before him : to burn up his enemies, on every side. His lightnings gave shine unto the world : the earth saw it and was afraid. The bills melted like wax, at the presence of the Lord : at the presence of the Lord of the wliole earth. The heavens have declared his righteous ness : and all the people have seen his glory. For thou. Lord, art higher than all that are in the earth : thou art exalted far above all Gods. Oh ! ye that love the Lord, see that ye hate the thing that is evil : the Lord pre serveth the souls of the faithful ; and shall de liver them from tbe power of the ungodly. There is sprung up a light for the righte ous: and joyful gladness for such as are true- hearted. Rejoice in the Lord, Oh ! ye righteous : and give thanks, for a remembrance of his holiness. 48 NINTH DAY. ^jsfalm 102. Hear my prayer, O! Lord: and let my cryiug come unto thee. Hide not thy face from me in the time of my trouble, incline thine ear unto me when I call ; O ! hear me, and that right soon. For my days are consumed away like smoke : and my bones are burnt up as it were a firebrand. My heart is smitten down, and withered like grass : so that I forget to eat my bread. For the voice of my groaning : my bones will scarce cleave to ray flesh, I am become like a pelican in the wilder ness : and like an owl that is in the deserted places. I have watched, and am even as it were a sparrow: that sitteth alone upon the house top. 49 I have eaten ashes as it were bread : and mingled my drink with weeping ; And that because of thine indignation and wrath : for thou hast taken me up, and cast me down. My days are gone like a shadow, and I am withered like grass. But, thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever : and thy remembrance throughout all genera tions. Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth : and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure : they all shall wax old as doth a garment. And as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed : but -thou art the same, and thy raercies shall not fail. ^Min 103. Bless the Lord, O ray soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name. E 50 Bless the Lord, O my soul : and forget not all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities. Who saveth thy life from destruction : and crowneth thee with mercy and loving kindness. Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things: making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment : for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He shewed his ways unto Moses : his works unto the Children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion aud mercy : long suffering, and of great goodness. He Avill not alway be chiding: neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He bath not dealt with us after our «ins : nor rewarded us according to our wick ednesses. For look how high the heaven is in com- 51 parison of the earth : so great is his mercy also toward thera that fear hira. Look how wide also the east is from the west : so far hath he set our sins from us. Yea, like as a father pitieth his own chil dren : even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we are mr.de : he remembereth that we are but dust. The days of man are but as grass: for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone : and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and. ever upon them that fear him : and his righteousness upon children's children. Even upon such as keep his covenant: and think upon his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his seat in hea ven : and his kingdom ruleth over all. E 2 52 O bless the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength : ye that fulfil his com mandment, and hearken unto the voice of his words. O bless the Lord, all ye his hosts : ye ser vants of his that do his pleasure. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion : bless thou the Lord, my soul for ever. ^^ 53 TENTH DAY. ^^alm 104. Jl RAISE the Lord, O my soul : O Lord my God, thou art become exceeding glorious : thou art clothed with majesty and honour. Thou deckest thyself with light as it were with a garment : and spreadest out the heavens like a curtain. Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters : and maketh the clouds his cha riot: and walketh upon the wings of the wind. He maketh his angels spirits : and his ministers a flaming fire. He laid the foundations of the earth : that it never should move at any time. Thou coveredst it Avith the deep like as Avith a garment: the Avaters stand in the bills. E 3 54 At thy rebuke they flee : at the voice of thy thunder they are afraid. They go up as high as the hills, and dowH to the valleys beneath : even unto the place which thou hast appointed for them. Thou hast set them their bounds which they shall not pass : neither turn again to cover the earth. He sendeth the springs into the rivers : Avhich run among the hills. All beasts of the field drink thereof : and the Avild asses quench their thirst. Beside them shall, the fowls of the air have their habitation : and sing among the branches. He watereth the hills from above : the earth is filled Avith the fruit of thy works. He bringeth forth grass for the cattle : and green herb for the service of men ; That he may bring food out of the earth, and wine that maketh glad the heart of raan : and oil to raake him a cheerful countenance, and bread to strengthen man's heart. 55 The trees of the Lord also are full of sap : even the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted ;. Wherein the birds make their nests : and the fir-trees are a dwelling for the stork. The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats: and so are the stoney rocks for the' conies. He appointed the moon for certain sea sons : and the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness that it may be night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do move. The lions roaring after their prey : do seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, and they get them away together: and lay them doAvn in their dens. Man goeth forth to his work, and to his labour : until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are thy works : in wisdom hast thou made them all : the earth is full of thy riches. So is the great and wide sea also : wherein 56 are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships, and there is that Le viathan ; whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein. These Avait all upon thee : that thou mayest give them meat in due season. When thou givest it them they gather it : and when thou openest thy hand they are filled Avith good. When thou hidest thy face they are troubled : when thou takest away theu" breath they die, and are turned again to their dost. When thou lettest thy breath go forth they shall be made : and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. The glorious majesty of the Lord shall endure for ever : the Lord shall rejoice in his Avorks. The earth shall tremble at the look of him : if he do but touch the hills they shall smoke. I will sing unto the Lord as long as I 67 live : I will praise my God Avhile I have ray being. And so shall ray words praise hira : my joy shall be in the Lord. As for sinners, they shall he consumed out of the earth, and the ungodly shall come to an end : praise thou the Lord, O my soul, praise the Lord. 68 ELEVENTH DAY. ^isfalm 107. yJ GIVE thanks unto the Lord, for he is gra cious, and his mercy endureth for ever. Let them give thanks Avhom the Lord hath redeemed : and delivered from the hand of the enemy. And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west : from the north, and from the south. They went astray in the wilderness out of the way : and found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty : their soul fainted in them. So they cried unto the Lord in their trouble : and he delivered them from their distress. 59 He led them forth by the right way : that they might go to the city where they dwelt. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness : and declare the won ders that he doeth for the children of men. For he satisfieth the empty soul: and fil leth the hungiy soul with goodness. Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death : being fast bound in misery and iron. Because they rebelled against the words of the Lord : and lightly regarded the counsel of the Most Highest, He also brought down their heart through heaviness : they fell down, and there Avas none to help them. So AA-hen they cried unto the Lord in their trouble : he delivered them out of their distress. For he brought them out of darkness, and out of the shadow of death : and brake their bonds in sunder. 60 O that men vi'ould therefore praise the Lord for his goodness: and declare the aa'ou- ders that he doeth for the children of men. For he hath broken the gates of brass: and smitten the bars of iron in sunder. Foolish men are plagued for their of fence : and because of their wickedness. Their soul abhorred all manner of meat : and they AAere even hard at death's door. So when they cried unto the Lord in their trouble : he delivered thera out of their distress. He sent his Avord, and' healed thera: and they were saved from their destruction. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness: and declare the VAon- ders that he doeth for the children of men. That they would offer unto him the sacri fice of thanksgiving: and tell out his works with gladness. They that go down to the sea in ships : and occupy their business in great waters. These men see the works of the Lord^ and his Avonders in the deep. 61 For at his AVord the stormy wind ariseth : which lifteth up the waves thereof. They are carried up to heaven, and down again to the deep : their soul meltet h away because of the trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man : and are at their wit's end. So Avhen they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, he dellvereth them out of their distress. For he maketh the storm to cease: so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad, because they are at rest : af\d so he bringeth them unto the haven where they would be. O that men would therefore praise the Lord for his goodness : and declare the won ders that he doeth for the children of men. That they would exalt him also in the congregation of the people : and praise him in the seat of the elders. Who turneth the floods into a wilder ness : and drieth up the water springs. A fruitful land maketh he barren : for the Avickedness of them that dvA'ell therein. 62 Again, he maketh the Avilderness a stand ing water : and water-springs of a dry ground. And there he setteth the hungry : that they may build thera a city to dwell in. That they may sow their land, and plant A'ineyards : to yield them fruits of increase. He blessed them, so that they multiply exceedingly: and suffered not their cattle to decrease. And again, when they are minished, and brought low : through oppression, through any plague or trouble ; Though he suffer them to be evil intreated through tyrants : and let them Avander out of the way in the wilderness ; yet helpeth he the poor out of misery : and maketh him house hold's like a flock of sheep. The righteous will consider this, and re joice : and the mouth of all Avickedness shall be stopped. Whoso is wise will ponder these things : and they shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord. 03 TWELFTH DAY. ^Mn\ 116. 1 LOVE the Lord : because he hath heard the voice of my supplication ; Because he hath inclined his ear unto me : therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. The sorrows ef death compassed me round about :¦ and the pains of hell gat hold Upon me. I found trouble and heaviness, and I called upon the name of the Lord : Oh ! Lord ! I beseech thee deliver my soul. Gracious is the Lord aud righteous : yea our God is merciful. The Lord preserveth the simple: I was in misery, and he helped me. r 2 64 Turn again then unto thy rest, Oh ! my soul : for the Lord hath regarded thee. Thou Lord, hast delivered my soul from death : mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord : in the land of the living. What return shall I make unto the Lord : for all the benefits, that he hath done unto I will receive tlie cup of salvation : and Avill call upon the name of the Lord. Behold, Oh ! God, how that I am thy servant : I am thy servant, and thou hast broken my bonds in sunder. Therefore will I offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving: and Avill confess that thy mercy endureth for ever. 3^jefaim 119. My soul cleaveth to the dust: quicken me, Oh ! Lord, by the help of thy word. 65 With my whole heart will I seek thee : Oh ! let me not stray from thy command ments. Open mine eyes, that they raay see : the wondrous things of thy law. Oh ! learn me true understanding and knoAvledge : for I have believed thy com mandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray : but now thy testimonies are my delight, and ray counsellors. Yea, it is good for me, that I have been in trouble : that I might learn thy statutes. And that the law of thy mouth raight be dearer to me : than thousands of gold and silver. The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting : Oh ! grant me understanding, and I shall live. ^^alm 121. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. f3 66 My help cometh even from the Lord : who hath made heaven and earth. He Avill not suffer my foot to be moved, and he that keepeth me will not sleep. The Lord himself is my keeper : the Lord is my defence upon my right hand. So that the sun shall not smite me by day : neither the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve me from all evil : yea, it is even he that shall keep my soul. The Lord shall preserve ray going out, and ray coming in : from this time forth for evermore. I^jefalm i3o. Out of the deep have I called unto thee. Oh ! Lord : Lord hear ray voice. Oh ! let thine ears consider A\ell : the voice of ray complaint. If thou, Lord, should'st be extreme, to mark what is done amiss : Oh, Lord, who may abide it ? But there is mercy with thee : therefore, shalt thou he feared. I look for the Lord, my soul doth wait for him : in his word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the Lord ; for with him there is mercy : and vvith him there .is plenteous redemption. He shall redeem the faithful : from all their sins. ^jEfalni 138. I will give thanks unto thee, Oh ! Lord, Avith my Avhole heart : before the gods (of this Avorld) Avill I give praises unto thee. I will Avorship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name, because of thy loving kindness, and truth : for thou hast magnified thy name, and thy word above all things. When I called upon thee, thou heardest me : and enduedst my soul with much strength. 68 For though the Lord be so high, yet hatli he respect unto the lowly: as for the proud, he beholdeth them afar off. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, yet shalt thou refresh me : thou shalt stretch forth thine arm, to keep me from falling, and thy right hand shall save rae. The Lord shall raake good his loving kindness- toward me :. yea thy mercy. Oh ! Lord, endureth for ever ; despise not then the works of thine oavu hands. 69 THIRTEENTH DAY. ^0aim 139. KJH ! Lord ! thou hast searched me out, and known me: thou knOAvest ray doAvn-sitting, and mine up-rising ; thou understandeth my thoughts long before. Thou art about my path, and about ray bed : and spiest out all ray ways. For lo, there is not a word in ray tongue : but thou. Oh ! Lord ! knowest it altogether. Thou hast fashioned me, behind and be fore : and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too Avonderful and ex cellent for me: I qannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go then, from thy spirit r or whither shall I go then, from thy presence ?, If I climb up into heaven, thou art there : if I go down to hell, thou, art there also. 70 If I take the wings of the morning; and remain in the uttermost parts of the sea ; Even there also shall thy hand lead rae : and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say peradventnre the darkness shall cover rae : then shall my night be turned to day. Yea, the darkness is no darkness with thee ; but the night is as clear as the day : the darkness and the light to thee are both alike. Thou hast formed my reins : thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks unto thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvelloiis are thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well. My bones were not hid from thee, when I was made in secret : and moulded in the confines of darh-ness. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being imperfect: and in thy book Avere all my members written. Which day by day were fashioned : Avhen as yet there was none of them. 71 How dear are thy counsels unto me, Oh! God : Oh ! hoAV great is the sum of them. If I tell them, they are more in number than the sand : when I Avake up, I am present with thee. Try me, then. Oh ! God, and search the ground of my heart : prove me, and examine my thoughts. Look Avell, if there be any way of Avicked ness in me = and lead me in the way ever lasting. ^0ahn 143. Hear ray prayer. Oh! Lord, and con sider my desire : hearken unto me for thy truth, and righteousness' sake. And enter not into judgment Avith thy servant .- for in thy sight shall no one Hving be justified. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me and my heart Avithin me is deso late. 72 Yet do I remeraber the time past ; I muse upon all thy works : I meditate upon the work of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee : my soul gaspeth unto thee as a thirsty land. Hear rae. Oh ! Lord, and that soon, for my spirit waxeth faint : hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down to the pit. Oh ! let me hear thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning, for in thee is my trust : shew thou rae the way tfraT^I should walk in, for I lift up my soul unto thee. Deliver me. Oh ! Lord, from my adver sities : for I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee, for thou art my God : let thy loving- spirit lead me on, in the AA^ay of righteous ness. Quicken me. Oh ! Lord, for thy name's sake : and for thy righteousness' sake, bring my soul out of trouble. 78 ^iSalin 146. Praise the Lord ! Oh ! my soul, while I live will I praise the Lord : yea, as long as I have any being, I will sing praises unto ray God. Oh ! put not your trust in princes, nor in any child of raan : for there is no help in them. For when the breath of man goeth forth, he shall turn again to his earth: and then all his thoughts perish. But blessed are they who have the God of Jacob for their helpi. and Avhose hope is in the Lord their God. Who made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is : who keepeth his pro mise for ever. Who helpeth them to right that suffer Avrong : who feedeth the hungry. The Lord looseth men out of prison: the Lord giveth sight to the blind. G 74 The Lord helpeth them that are fallen : the Lord careth for the righteous. The Lord careth for the stranger, he de- fendeth the fatherless, and the widow : as for the way of the ungodly, he turneth it upside down. The Lord, God of righteousness, is king from everlasting : and shall be throughout all generations. 75 FOURTEENTH DAY. TAKEN FROM l^j^almss 147, 148, 149, 150. vJh ! praise the Lord, for it is a good thing to sing praises unto our God : yea, a joyful pleasant thing it is to be thankful. For the Lord is loving unto every man : and his raercy is over all his works. He healeth them that are broken in heart : and giveth medicine to heal their sick ness. He telleth the number of the stars : and calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and great is his poAver : yea, and his wisdom is infinite. G 2 76 The Lord will exalt the lowly and raeek: and bring the ungodly down to the ground. Oh ! sing unto the Lord with thanksgiv ing : sing praises fi'om the heart unto our God. Who covereth the heaven with clouds, aud prepareth rain for the earth : and maketh the grass to grow upon the mountains, and herb for the use of man. Who giveth food unto the cattle : and feedeth the young ravens that call upon hira. Who is pleased to delight in thera that fear him : and in them that put their trust in his mercy. He sendeth fortli his commandments upon eartli : and his word runneth very He giveth snow like aa'ooI : and scattereth the hoar frost like allies. He casteth forth his ice like morsels : Avho is able to abide his frost ? He sendeth out his word and melteth them : he bloweth Avith his Aviud, and the Ava- ters floAv. He shewed his word unto Jacob ; his sta tutes and ordinances unto Israel. Oh ! praise we then the Lord of heaven : praise him in the height. Praise him all ye angels of his: praise him all his host. Praise him sun and moon : praise him all ye stars and lights. Praise him all ye heavens : and ye Avaters that are above the heavens. Lt;t them praise the name of the Lord : for he spake the word, and they Avere made: he commanded, and they Avere created. He hath made them fast for ever and ever : he hath given them a law, Avhich shall not be broken. The Lord also hath pleasure in his peo ple : and helpeth the meek hearted. His saints shall be joyful with glory: they shall rejoice in their places of rest. G 3 78 Oh ! praise God in his holiness : praise him in the firmaraent of his power. Praise him in his noble acts : praise him according to his excellent goodness. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.
