OO (T-W 380 St. Catherine West ^> 198 McGill Street MONTREAL Ottawa Hamilton Windsor Halifax Montreal IN MAY, 1642, Paul de Chomedy, Sieur de Maisonneuve, and his band of faithful com panions landed on the spot where now is located the Customs House. , An open-air Mass was immediately said for their safe arrival. They christened the city Ville Marie in honour of the Virgin Mary who was their patron saint. The small settlement prospered, and in the year 1672 the first streets were laid out and named, principally amongst which we still have Notre Dame Street, now in the heart of the financial section. In 1760 General Amherst captured the city from the French, and then again in 1775 General Montgomery occupied the town on behalf of the Americans, who were then in the midst of their Great Revolution for Independence. They were not to remain long, for in the following year it was retaken by the British, and has never since then flown any other flag but that of Great Britain. TO-DAY Montreal is the largest city in Canada and the fifth largest on the American Continent, with a population of nearly one million, includ ing its suburbs. It is the second largest seaport in America and has a harbour with a capacity for one hundred ocean going vessels. Montreal is predominantly a Roman Catholic city, and is remarkable both for the quantity and quality of churches, convents and institu tions of that denomination. It is also the home of two of the largest trans portation systems in the world, namely the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Rail ways. \3 1 Antiques Jenkins Galleries -«s ANTIQUE FURNITURE PICTURES OLD PORCELAIN AND POTTERY SILVER AND SHEFFIELD PLATE GLASS SILHOUETTES PAINTINGS ON GLASS CLOCKS - WATCHES JEWELLERY Your Inspection is Cordially Invited B. In the centre of this square stands the South African Monument, erected in memory of the Canadians who lost their lives in the South African war. Immediately opposite the square is the Windsor Hotel. We now turn left on Dorchester Street, formerly called Chemin du Roi, or the King's Highway, and pass on the right a monument erected to Sir John A. Macdonald, first premier of the Dominion. Immediately beyond on the same street we come to the Basilica of St. James, the seat of the Roman Catholic Arch bishop of the Diocese of Montreal. It is almost an exact replica of St. Peter's in Rome, and an outstanding feature of the cathedral are the thirteen statues arranged over the portico. They represent the following — St. James, St. Joseph, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Vincent de Paul, St. John, St. Paul, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Patrick, St. Charles Borromeo, St. John the Baptist, St. Hyacinthe and St. Ignatius. Each is a gift of a different parish in the diocese. \5 1 Yorkshire Importing Company ist Floor, 7 St. Catherine St. East Corner St. Lawrence Boulevard Established 1891 Direct Importers of Scotch Tweeds English Vv^orsteds French TsAontagnac Overcoatings To American Visitors: Imported woollens are 40% lower in Canada than at home owing to our preferew tial tariff. On the right is the fashionable Presbyterian Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, where some of the most fashionable wedding ceremonies take place. We next pass on the left the oldest chartered club in Montreal, that of St. James; we next pass the Fraser Public Library, the Masonic Temple, and Beaver Hall Square. Turning to the right on Beaver Hall Hill, we soon descend its slopes, and pass on the right the abandoned Church of St. Andrew," which at one time was one of the largest Presbyterian congregations in this city, but owing to the growing spread of commerce, which has invaded this locality, the church has had to be abandoned. At the foot of the hill, on the left, there stretches for two blocks southward, Victoria Square, in the second section of which one can see the monument erected to the great Queen Victoria as an expression of the great love and esteem of the Canadian people. We are now entering the financial section, and make three sharp turns, to the left on St. James Street (the Wall Street of Montreal), to the right on McGill Street, and again to the left on Notre Dame Street, the longest thoroughfare in the city. St. James Street It extends practically the full length of Montreal Island, covering a distance of nearly thirty miles. This was also one of the first streets to be laid out and named in Montreal. Continuing along this street for a short dis- * tance we come to Place d'Armes, the heart of older Montreal. It is the terminus of most of the city's tramcars. This square marks the scene of one of the greatest struggles in the history of the earlier settlers. It was here, when Montreal was but a struggling settlement that the Indians, deciding to attack the white man, whom they termed the Invaders, were repulsed by Maison- neuve, and a small band of settlers, but it was only after Maisonneuve had slain their chief that they retreated. The statue in the centre of the square was erected to the valour of Maisonneuve, and was designed by the late Paul Hebert, French-Canadian sculptor of no mean repute. On the pedestal of the statue one can notice statues of Jeanne Mance, foundress of the famous Hotel Dieu, a Roman Catholic Hospital, which still stands to-day; Closse and Des Moines, companions of Maisonneuve, and the figure of an Iroquois Indian. The church was built in 1824 to take the place of an earlier structure dating back to 1672. The church is the second largest in America, and can accommodate 10,000 worshippers. Its twin towers contain ten bells, one of which is known as "Le Gros Bourdon" weighing 24,780 pounds. It is rung only on very special occasions. The autobus stops here for ten minutes and tourists can take advantage of seeing the interior of this magnificent edifice. On entering the church you will be struck by the magnificence of the interior, the beauty of the high altar, the lavishness of the mural decorations, and the brilliancy of the thousands of small candles which are always burning. The foundation stone of this church was laid in 1823, and the architect was O'Donnell. The.oil paint ings depicting early Canadian life are also worthy of note. Beside the church stands the historic Semin ary of St. Sulpice, one of the few remaining relics of the days of the French rule. This building was erected in 1710 and is now used for the offices of the Order. of St. Sulpice. On either side of us as we travel along you will notice trees have been planted, these are to commemorate the death of different boys who served in the late war. There have been erected eight hundred and forty trees, each one in memory of some individual who fell in the late war. The Protestant Institution for the Blind is on our left, while still further on we pass Loyola College for Boys, conducted by the Jesuit fathers. We enter Montreal - West and pass on the right the Montreal West War Memorial and Town Hall. Descending the hill we enter Ville St. Pierre, a typical French Canadian village. We next enter the city of Lachine. La Chine is French for China, and it is said that it derived its name from the fact that its founder, Sieur de LaSalle, always said he would discover China. He did set out on numerous expeditions, but never discovered China. We cross the Lachine Canal and proceed along the Lasalle Road, built on the site of an old Indian Trail and into the town of Lasalle, and for the next eight miles we are travelling along the shores of the St. Lawrence River.
