THE SECOND SCHOOL SOCIETY of Granby came into
existence by virtue of an act passed by the General
Assembly of Connecticut at its May session in 1795, the
essential paragraphs of which were as follows:
An Act appropriating the Monies which shall arise on the sale
of the Western Lands, belonging to this State.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Council, and House of
Representatives, in General Court assembled, That the principal
sum, which shall be received on the sale of the lands belonging to
this State, lying west of Pennsylvania, shall be, and remain a
perpetual fund, for the purposes hereafter mentioned in this Act,
to be loaned, or otherwise improved for those purposes as the
General Assembly shall direct; and the interest arising therefrom,
shall be, and hereby is appropriated to the support of Schools in
the several Societies constituted, or which may be constituted by
law, within certain local bounds within this State, to be kept ac
cording to the provisions of law, which shall from time to time
be made, and to no other use or purpose whatsoever, except in the
case, and under the circumstances hereafter mentioned in this Act.
Be it further enacted, That the said interest as it shall become
due from time to time, shall be paid over to the said Societies, in
their capacity of School Societies, according to the list of polls
and rateable Estate of such Societies respectively; which shall,
when such payment shall be made, have been last perfected.
Be it further enacted, That all the inhabitants living within
the limits of the located Societies, who by law have or may have
a right to vote in Town meetings, shall meet sometime in the
month of October annually, in the way and manner prescribed in
the statute, entitled "An Act for forming, ordering, and regulat
ing Societies," and being so met shall exercise the powers given
in and by said Act, in organizing themselves, and in appointing
the necessary officers, as therein directed for the year ensuing;
and may transact any other business on the subject of schooling
in general, and touching the monies hereby appropriated to their
use, in particular, according to law; and shall have power to ad
journ from time to time as they shall think proper.

Be it further enacted, That the inhabitants or members of the
several religious Societies, Churches or Congregations aforesaid,
who have right by law to vote in their respective meetings, on
the subject of ministry, and the public worship of God, shall
assemble themselves sometime in the month of December annu
ally, or at such other time as they shall judge convenient, and
may organize themselves, and appoint the necessary officers as in
said act is directed, all in the way and manner therein prescribed,
with power to adjourn from time to time as they may think
proper; and in any of their said meetings they shall have power
to transact any business relating to the ministry and the public
worship of God, according to law; but shall have no power to act
on the subject of schooling; any law, usage, or custom, to the
contrary notwithstanding.
After sixty years, the existence of the society ceased by an act
approved July i, 1856, "Providing for the transfer to Towns of
the Duties and Powers of School Societies with regard to Schools."
The bounds of the Second School Society in Granby coincided
with the bounds of the Turkey Hills Ecclesiastical Society or
Parish. This parish was situated in the east part of the town of
Granby, except a strip one-half mile in width on the east side
which lay in the town of 'Windsor. In 1854 t^^e north part of
Windsor, taking in the part included iu the Secoud School Soci
ety of Granby, was incorporated as the town of Windsor Locks.
Granby had been incorporated from Simsbury in 17S6. On June
2, 1858, the town of East Granby was incorporated from portions
of Granby and Windsor Locks with practically the same bound
aries as those of the former Second School Society of Granby.
During the two years, 1856-1858, between the abolishing of the
school society and the incorporation of the town of East Granby
the school affairs of the parish had been managed by the town of
Granby. Previous to the passage of the act of 1795 all matters relating
to public schools in Turkey Hills parish had been managed by
the parish. In 1739, two years after the parish was organized,

a school committee was first chosen, and from this time it is prob
able that a school or schools were regularly maintained in the
parish, as a school committee was annually chosen.
At the time these records begin the society was divided into
seven school districts, known from their locations as the half mile,
the middle, north, and south, east of the mountain, and the mid
dle, north, and south, west of the mountain. Later the half mile
district was abolished and the others were designated by number
in the order above given.
In 1 741 a committee was chosen by the Turkey Hills parish to
meet with the school committees of the other societies "to devid
the Scool money in y'^ Town of Simsbury," and from this time a
tax for the support of schools was voted with more or less regu
larity at the annual parish meetings.
The first dividend received by the school societies for the sup
port of schools under the act of 1795 from the income of the fund
derived from the sale of western lands, better known as the "school
fund," was in March, 1799. From this time to and including
1819 the income was annually divided according to the grand lists
of the school societies. No enumeration of school children was
made or required during these years. But this system of dividing
the school money was manifestly unfair, and beginning in 1820
the division was made upon a basis of the number of children
between the ages of four and sixteen years enumerated in each
school society. The number of children in the Second School
Society of Granby and the amount received each year so far as
these can be ascertained are given in the following table:

In the return for 1825 there was an omission of forty-seven
children and a special grant was made by the General Assembly
to cover the omission. Children were frequently enumerated both
in the district where their parents resided and in the district where
they (the children) were temporarily residing. A circular sent
out in 1833 requesting that children be enumerated only in the
district where their parents resided caused a falling off in the re
turns. The enumeration was made in August and the school
money paid in two installments the October and March follow
ing; but in 1852 the law was changed so as to make the enumera
tion in January, so that no returns appear for that year. The
returns given for 1857 are for the whole town of Granby.
The following is taken from the report of the Commissioner
of Common Schools for 1839:

One of the teachers has taught over 12 years; two have taught
in same district before, and each for four seasons. Nine school
visitors. Town Deposit Fund all appropriated to schools, and
divided like School Fund. Five persons present at school meet
ing. Other sources show the enumeration by districts for three other

Another source of income available for the support of schools is
the income of what is known as the "town deposit fund." This
fund is a sum of money deposited by the United States, under an
act of Congress approved June 23, 1836, with the treasurers of
the several states and subject to recall. Connecticut passed an
act depositing the money with the several towns in proportion
to their population and upon the same conditions that it had
been received from the United States. Some towns neglected to
withdraw their proportion of the money but allowed it to remain
with the state treasurer and annually received the income accru
ing upon it. Such was the policy pursued by the town of Granby
whose fund was $7,019.26. When the town of East Granby was
incorporated the town deposit fund money was divided according
to the population and the new town's proportion was fixed at
$2,083.84. This was allowed to remain with the state treasurer
until 1892, when it was withdrawn and loaned to the town upon
a note bearing five per cent, interest. Not more than one-half of
the income of this fund might be appropriated for other purposes
than the support of schools, but the Second School Society of
Granby and the town of East Granby always used the whole in
come for school purposes.
The school-houses were built by and at the expense of the school
district in whicli each is situated. The early custom of windows
high above the floor is one that has survived in the majority of
them to the present time. Inside, a desk slightly inclined and
with a narrow level place at the top was attached to the wall and
extended along three sides of the room. In front of this was a
long form or bench without back on which the older pupils sat.
They were thus seated facing the wall and with their backs to
wards the teacher. At times these pupils were allowed to turn
about and sit facing the middle of the room. Inside of the bench
or form on which the older pupils sat was another lower one which
was occupied by the smaller children who were seated facing the
center of the room. The children seated on this bench had no
desks. In most, probably in all, of the schoolhouses in this soci
ety the bench and desk for the larger scholars were on a platform
raised two steps above the floor of the room. In such cases the
lower step formed the bench or seat for the smaller scholars. This
gave them the advantage of a back to their bench; but this ar
rangement aLso had one disadvantage for them. When the larger
scholars sat facing the middle of the room each one was afforded
ample opportunity to poke his toes into the back of the luckless
child seated just in front of him.
The teacher's desk, whose height made it necessar}' for the
teacher to stand behind it or to sit upon a high stool or a raised
platform, was near the fourth side of the room. Its hinged cover
could be locked down to preserve its contents from inquisitive
eyes and fingers. The fire-place was also located at this side of
the room. The stove succeeded the fireplace before 1830, the
change probably taking place during the decade previous. Later,
within the memory of some now living, the long benches and

desks were replaced by desks and benches suitable for two schol
ars and arranged in rows all facing the teacher's side of the room.
The present writer can certify to the discomfort of these desks
with their accompanying narrow seats and straight, perpendicular
backs. There is little to be learned about the books used or the studies
pursued previous to the time covered by the memory of aged per
sons now living. We may, however, be certain that all of the
scholars were well grounded in the essentials of " the three r's,"
reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic. The returns made by the school
visitors of this society for the winter of 1838-9 show that the fol
lowing studies were taught, and show the number of authors whose
books were used: spelling only one author, reading eleven au
thors, arithmetic four authors, geography five authors, history
two authors, grammar one author, natural philosophy two au
thors, astronomy and chemistry, the last two being apparently
taught without the use of text-books. Writing was of course
also taught even if it was not dignified by being called a study;
but no books were used. The teacher or "master" was forced
to "set the copy" as well as make and mend the quill pens for
the scholars.
From an early period the catechism had been diligently studied
in New England schools, and the children were usually called
upon to repeat it at least once each week. The custom probably
continued in Connecticut until the adoption of the state constitu
tion in 1818. Previous to that date in this society the children
of parents belonging to other religious denominations than the
congregational, or presbyteriau as it was frequently called, were
excused from ' ' saying the catechism ' ' with the other scholars.
Repeating the catechism was kept up in this society until after
1830, but its study and repetition was not then obligatory and
probably had not been since 18 18. Saturday forenoon was the
time then usually taken for this exercise, and only those who
chose to do so took part in it. That famous little book the
New England Primer was the one from which the catechism
was studied.

Schools were in session daily during term time from Monday
morning until Saturday noon, and it was not until about 1850
that the Saturday forenoon session was discontinued.
One committee which does not appear on the records was reg
ularly, though apparently informally, chosen in school society
meetings until within the memory of some persons yet living. It
generally consisted of two persons of whom the local doctor was
usually one. Its name, "Itch and Louse Committee," sufficiently
explains its duties. The members of this committee visited the
schools at intervals and inspected the scholars.
This volume of records was picked up in 1889 or 1890 by a well
known local antiquarian and book collector, now deceased, in the
Hartford Trust Company's building, Hartford, where it was found
among the rubbish left in a recently vacated attorney's office. It
was presented to me by its finder in 1893. The volume is made up
as one signature of 46 leaves eight by thirteen inches in size with
a stiff, marbled-paper cover. The records are contained on the
first 42 pages, the remaining pages being blank. A. C. B.

We the Subscribers being appointed a Com" by the School
Society in Turky hills for the purpose of designating and pitch
ing the Stake for School houses in S"* Society if need be having
been called upon for the above purpose by the Southeast District
in S'^ Society Report as follows Viz
After having pitched the Stake at several places according to
our best judgment under the existing circumstances and those
places having been rejected by a Vote or Votes of the District
and now being requested by the District to remove the Stake We
have agreeable thereto pitched the same near the Southeast corner
of a lot of land owned by M'' Roswell Skinner and bounds as fol
lows east and west on Highway south on Alexander Griswold's
and north on Lemuel Bates land it being a part of the Harger lot
so called the east Sill of the house may any part of it be placed

said should be set off and annexed to the School District at the
Falls in Turky hills School Society

Resolved therefore by this Meeting that we agree to and concur
in said Vote of Salmon Brook Society and that so much of S" i""
School District as is described therein shall hereafter be consid
ered as belonging to and annexed to the S" School District at the
Falls now called No 6 in the School Society in Turky-hills with
the usual privileges of membership
Provided that this Vote shall in no wise be so construed as to
give those persons at any time living on the premises so admitted

Whereas the boundary lines of the 4"' school district of the 2*
school Society of the town of Granby not being now fixed & de
scribed so as to be known, We the Committee of said Society in
pursuance of a request from said District did, on the 12"^ day of
May A D. 1840 proceed to locate said District and establish the
boundary lines thereof as follows viz.
Beginning at the point on the top of the west ledge of the
mountain that is intersected by a straight line running South
68J^° East from a stake and stones at the road on the top of
Slough hill (so called) and from the point of beginning running
North 68%° West across the road at the top of said Slough hill
to the line seperating said 2* Society from the i'' school Society
in said Granby then on said Society line Northerly to the point
where said Society line is intersected by a straight Hne running
North 73° West from an Oak tree with stones piled about the
same standing at the road at the North East corner of Keziah
Hendricks land about half way down the long hill North of the

old Newgate Prison and from the point of intersection running
South 73° East through said Oak tree to the top of the west ledge
of the mountain then running Southerly along the top of said
ledge to the place of beginning. And we do hereby designate the

West on the Lordship line from the head of the Pickerel Cove to the
Canal, then on the Canal to a point South 22° West from a white

At a meeting of the Prudential Committee of the First and Sec
ond School Societies in Grauby at the house of Abram Holcomb
holden on the ii"" day of Sept. 185 1 for the purpose of defining
and establishing the boundry line between the Societies. The
Committee disagreed upon that subject. Whereupon Jeffrey O
Phelps Esq' of Simsbury was appointed by the unanimous con
sent of each member of the committee to adjust and establish said
line on the 19"' day of Sept. 1851

The following is the survey and decision of Jeffrey O Phelps in
regard to said line and in accordance with the request of Stad.

In pursuance of the above agreement and appointment I met
the Committees and agents of the i" & 2"' School Societies in the
Town of Granby at the House of Abraham Holcomb in said
Granby on the 19"' day of September 1851 at 10 o'clock in the

forenoon and heard the parties with their evidence, & at the re
quest of the Committee of said first school society & by consent
of both parties I adjourned the further hearing and examination
of the same to the Second day of October 1851 at 9 o'clock fore
noon at the same place when I again met both parties and further
heard them, and by consent of both parties I adjourned the further
hearing of the same to the 3'' Day of said October at 9 o'clock
forenoon at the same place when & where I again met the parties
with their evidence Exhibits and Counsel, and I further adjourned
the hearing to meet at the same place on the 13"' Day of said
October at 9 o'clock forenoon & on said is"" Day of October 1851
after having fully heard the parties with their Exhibits evidence
and Counsel I did proceed to define and establish the Boundary
Line between the i'* & 2'' school societies in said Granby as fol
lows (to Wit) Beginning on Granby South line at the mouth of
Salmonbrook — thence running up on the West Bank of said Sal-
monbrook to an Elm Tree standing on the Southwesterly side of
said Brook — which Elm tree I marked with the Letter X on the
southerly and northerly sides thereof — which Elm tree stands at
the place where I find by the evidence the ancient path near
where Cap' Holcomb formerly lived crossed said Salmonbrook —
Said Elm tree stands above the Bridge over Salmonbrook near
Abraham Holcombs — & Northerly of the Noah Holcomb House
so called, — & from said Elm tree I so marked Northerly in a direct
line to the Center of a large Rock on land of Levy Viets on the
north side of the Highway Leading from Salmonbrook village
to East Granby Church, which Rock stands about three Rods
North of the aforesaid Highway and about twenty Six rods
westerly of the Center of the Rail road as now graded — From the
Center of said Rock Northerly in a direct line to a Pile of stones
I erected at a place called Jewett Hill — which pile of stones I so
erected for a bound stand in the Crotch of the Road on said Jewett
hill at the Northeast Corner of Henery Griffins Land — from the
aforesaid bound on Jewett hill North 9^^° East to the North Hne
of the town of Granby and South line of Suffield — where I erected
a stake and stones as bounds — said stake is a Chestnut stake
scarfed on four sides and stands about 4 feet south of a White oak
tree The aforesaid Hne from the mouth of the Salmonbrook on the
dividing line between Simsbury and Granby to the North Hne of
the town of Granby as above described I hereby settle define and
Establish to be the dividing and Boundry Line between said First
and Second School Societies in said Town of Granby
