Johnson, Governor 1911-19- TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOCIETY OF COLONIAL WARS IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. yw HE Society of Colonial Wars in the District of ] Columbia celebrated the twentieth anniversary -"- of its organization at a dinner given in the Hotel Raleigh, Washington, D. C, on the evening of May 20, 1913. The tables were arranged in gridiron form, with red and white floral decorations, in harmony with the colors of the Society's banner — the Cross of St. George — a red cross on a white field. Dr. H. L. E. Johnson, Governor of the Society, presid ed and introduced the speakers, who were : U. S. Senator Henry A. duPont, Deputy-Governor, representing the Delaware Society; Mr. Robert Munro Boyd, Jr., Lieu tenant-Governor of the New Jersey Society; Mr. Robert Burton, Historian of the Maryland Society, and Com modore Richard G. Davenport, U. S. N. (retired), the only surviving charter member of the District of Colum bia Society in affiliation since its formation. An historical review of the Society's transactions from its organization was read by the Historian, Mr. Caleb C. Magruder, Jr. Letters expressive of regret on account of enforced absence were received from the British Ambassador, Sir Cecil Spring-Rice; Maj.-Gen. Leonard Wood, Chief of Staff, U. S. A. ; Mr. Howland Pell, Governor-General of the New York Society; Prof. William Libbey, Governor of the New Jersey Society; Dr. Henry Barton Jacobs, Governor of the Maryland Society ; Mr. Edward G. HISTORICAL SKETCH. rT\ HE General Society of Colonial Wars was organized | May 9 and 10, 1893, in the Governor's Room, City Hall, New York City, by delegates from the States of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the District of Columbia. The representatives of the latter jurisdiction were Mr. Chas. E. Coon, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury; Lieut. T. B. N. Mason, U. S. N., and Mr. Edward S. Hosmer. For the purpose of considering the organization of a society in the District of Columbia a committee com posed of Rear Admiral Francis A. Roe, U. S. N. ; Pay- Director James H. Watmouth, U. S. A. ; Mr. Charles E. Coon, and Lieut. Richard G. Davenport, U. S. N. ; all members of the New York Society, met at the home of Admiral Roe, 1232 Seventeenth Street, N. W., on April 6, 1893. Admiral Roe took the chair and appointed Lieut. Davenport Secretary and Treasurer, and Mr. Coon, Registrar. It was determined to organize a local society as soon as a sufficient number of applicants for membership warranted such action. May 6, 1893, the before-mentioned committee met at the home of Admiral Roe, Lieut. Davenport holding a telegraphic proxy from Pay:Director Watmouth. Organ ization was deferred until a larger resident membership was secured. "Ye Punch was served." May 20, 1893, a general meeting of resident members for the purpose of organization was held at the home of Admiral Roe. Present: Admiral Roe, Pay-Director Watmouth, Mr. Charles E. Coon, Lieut. The constitution and by-laws of the New York Society were, with some slight modifications, adopted as the governing rules. Mr. Moseley offered the services of a stenographer and the use of a room in the Interstate Commerce Commission for the Society's meetings, which was now formally organized with these objects: "To aid in preparing and publishing a correct history of the American Colonies now included in the territory belong ing to the United States, from the settlement of James town, Va., May 13, 1607, to the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775 ; to commemorate the important events of that period; to perpetuate the memory of the men who in military; naval, and civic positions of trust and respon sibility, by their acts and counsel, assisted in the estab lishment, defense, and preservation of the said American Colonies ; and to promote a spirit of loyalty and patriotic devotion to the Nation which they founded." The Gov ernor made appropriate remarks on the subject, and named a committee to act in conjunction with others to prevent further abuses. A meeting commemorative of the 291st anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, was held at which Dr. Marcus Benjamin read a paper on "The Battle of Lake George."
