YALE UNIVERSITY ART AND ARCHITECTURE LIBRARY CATALOGUE OF THE Morse Collection OF American Historical Pottery CATALOGUE OF THE Morse Collection of American Historical Pottery PRESENTED BY Emma DeF. Morse TO THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY 1913 WORCESTER, MASS., U.S.A. PUBLISHED BY THE SOCIETY 1916 INTRODUCTION The Morse collection of American Historical Pottery was pre sented to the American Antiquarian Society in 1913 by Emma DeF. Morse, of Worcester, Mass. With her husband, the late Edwin A. Morse, she became interested in the collecting of antique furniture and china about 1885, and gradually devoted her ener gies primarily to the acquiring of the Staffordshire Pottery which displayed American views. Her purpose was to obtain every known American scene produced on this ware, in the dark blue if possible, and failing that, in some other color, such as light blue, brown, black or pink. So well had she succeeded, that by 1907 Alexander M. Hudnut in "American Homes and Gardens" said: "One of the most energetic and successful collectors of the past decade is Mrs. Emma DeF. Morse, of Worcester, Mass. She has accomplished the almost impossible task of getting together 280 varieties of dark blue historical ware. Mrs. Morse is the fortunate possessor of an 'Albany Theater' view and I do not know of any one else who has it. She also has the little seven and one-half inch 'Hurl Gate, East River' plate and the six-inch 'Park Theater,' New York, eagle border plate — both of them exceedingly rare pieces. The old 'Capitol at Albany,' washbowl and pitcher, is without doubt the most valuable specimen of this superb collec tion. There are only about ten pieces scattered among the differ ent collections of the country which Mrs. Morse needs to make her collection complete. I do not hesitate to say that, within my knowledge, this is the finest collection of dark blue Staffordshire in America." In January, 1913, Mrs. Morse decided to present the collection to the American Antiquarian Society, with the provision that the Society should properly protect and display it. 3 In October, 1913, steel cases, with a perforated background and heavy plate glass doors, were installed and the collection placed on permanent exhibit. The Staffordshire Pottery is especially interesting to American collectors since the views of American buildings and scenes trans ferred to this ware have preserved more than 200 pictures of anti quarian value, many of which are perpetuated in no other way. This pottery was made in Staffordshire, England, primarily for American use, from 1821 to about 1840. Mr. R. T. H. Halsey, in his book on Staffordshire Pottery, states that the blue coloring was adopted at first, as it had previously proved attractive to American housewives and was also the richest form of cheap decoration in use at the time. He further says, " In 1831 the pro cess of lithography so cheapened the decoration of pottery that the beautiful dark blue was superseded by lighter colorings, which are decidedly inferior in artistic beauty to those printed from the deeply cut copper plate. Investigation has shown that most of the scenes decorating the earthern ware were taken from contem porary prints. In a number of cases original sketches by artists were used, and in this form alone numerous early views of our buildings and scenes have been preserved. This dark blue pottery was made exclusively for the American market. It must certainly be classed as Americana, and is a valuable contribution to the history of" the nation. " Because of the number of collectors who are interested in these views chiefly for local reasons, specimens have become much sought after and as a result the scarce pieces have brought exceed ingly large prices. A thousand dollars is not an uncommon price for a desirable specimen of which only a very few examples are known. As long ago as 1878, Mr. William C. Prime in his intro duction to "The China Hunter's Club" foresaw this great rise in values when he said, "With whatever disdain the collector of Dresden and Sevres may now look down on the blue-printed crock eries of Clews and Wood and Ridgway, the day will come when ceramic specimens showing our first steamboats, our first railways, the portraits of our distinguished statesmen, soldiers, and sailors, the openings of our canals, the various events of our wars, and our triumphs in peace, will rank in historical collections with the vases of Greece." Few gifts have ever been presented to the American Antiquarian Society which have a greater value or higher historical interest than the Morse collection of American Historical Pottery. The collection has been arranged in six cases by Miss Frances C. Morse of Worcester, to whom, both for this assistance and for her aid in the preparation of the list which follows, the Society is much indebted. The arrangement in the cases is primarily geo graphical, although the different colored wares are kept together. Case I is devoted to Massachusetts and Connecticut. In Case II are the plates of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, Virginia, and the Western States. Case 1 1 1 is devoted entirely to New York State. In Case IV are exhibited the coats-of-arms of the States, the pitchers, bowls, and other pieces which had to be shelved rather than hung, and most of the ware which contains medallion heads of Washington, Lafayette and other heroes of American history. Cases V and VI are devoted to the light blue, brown, black, purple and pink ware. In the following check list, the first index is numerical, listing the specimens as they are arranged in the cases. The measure ments of the pieces are given, the height and width for the rect angular pieces, the diameter for the circular pieces, and the height for the pitchers. The second index is arranged alphabetically, containing the names of the cities, towns, and States, the names of the portraits, and numerous cross references. Names of makers, when known, are given in parentheses. Initials are used, when so given on the backs of the pieces, and are as follows: C. M. Charles Meigh "D" Unknown E. W. & S. Enoch Wood & Sons 5 J. H. & Co. Joseph Heath & Co. R. S. Ralph Stevenson R. S. W. Ralph Stevenson & Williams T. G. Thomas Green W. A. & S. W. Adams & Sons W. R. S. & Co. William Ridgway [Sons?] & Co.
