FISHER UNWIN I, Adelphi Terrace 1906 Byfet>.4- [All rights reserved.] INTRODUCTION The following Parables appeared originally week by week during the past nine months in the pages of the Westminster Gazette. To the Editor and Assistant Editor of that journal the author begs to tender his most sincere thanks for their ever-ready help and advice. Opposite most of the Parables a slight clue is given to the subject-matter, which may have become obscured owing to the lapse of time. Feancis Beown. ' Jan., 1906. CONTENTS I. Mr. Balfour's unwillingness to define clearly his position on the Fiscal Question, combined with Mr. Chamberlain's persistent claim that the Premier was in favour of Protection, caused the Unionist Free Traders to revolt. Ultimately, however, Mr. Balfour disowned Protection (pure and simple) ; and thereby caused a further cleavage in his party. ['Westminster Gazette, March 24.] 14 OiA\oL nrruuU- '?uuyy\. Mr. Chamberlain's Protectionist campaign was, without doubt, started primarily for the purpose of diverting public attention from the South African fiasco and other doings of the Government which had reduced blundering to a science. The prophecy embodied in this Parable has apparently been fulfilled. THE BEADLE AND THE STEANGEES. In the debate on the Aliens' Bill Mr. Akers Douglas, in his futile efforts to prove that the measure was not being put forward merely to provide a future Tory electioneering cry, insisted upon confusing the huge number of foreigners passing annually through this country on their way to America and other places with the small number of those settling here.
