A T the Beginning ofthe preceding Chapter was jL\. explained what the Lord taught and foretold concerning the Laft Judgment, or concerning the laft Days of the Church, in Matthew, Chap. xxiv. from Verfe 8 to 14, n. 3486 to 3489 ; we fliall now proceed to explain, by Way of Introdudion to this Chapter, as was propofed, the Contents of the fubfequent Ver- fes, 15, 16, 17, 18: " PVhen thercflore ye fiall flee the *' Abomination of Deflolation fpoken ofl by Daniel ihe Pro^ " phet, ftanding in the holy Place, be who reaJeih let hiin -" carefully obflervj^. Then let ihofle vjho are in Judaa flee " into the Mountains, Let h'lm who is on the Houfle-top " not come dozvn to take any Thing out ofl his Houfle. Nei- " ther let fji'm who is in the Field turn back to take hif " Cloa/bs." 3651. Every one may fee that thefe Words coqtaii? Arcana, and that without a Difcovery of fuch Arcana, it cannot poflibly be Jcnown what is meant by them who ^re in Judaaa fleeing to the Mountains ; and by hin? •who is on the Houfe-top not going down to take any Thing out ofthe Houfe"; and by him who is 'yn the Field not returning back to talje his Cloaths : Unlefs ¦fhe internal Senfe taught what is fignified and implied hy thefe Particulars, they who fearch into and interpret A a jhe 4 GENESIS. Chap, xxviii. the Word might be led away and give into Opinions altogether foreign to che Truth; yea, they who in Heart deny the Sancftity of the Word might hence maintain, that the above ExprelTions were only intended to defcribe Flight and Efcape on the Approach of an Enemy, confequently that there is Nothing more of Sandicy contained therein; \yhen yet by thefe Words ofthe Lord is fully dtfcribcd a State of the Church's Vaftation as to the good Things of Love and the Truths of Faith, as may appear from the following Explica tion of each Expreffion. 3652. According to the internal Senfe the Significa tion of the above Paffage is this: If lien then fere ye fhall flee the Aboniinalion of Dcjolation, lignifics the Varia tion of the Church, which then hath Place, when the Lord is no longer acknowledged, confequently when there is no Love and no Faith in Him ; alio when there is ho longer any neighbourly Love or Charity ; and confequently when there is , no longer any Faith of Good and Truth ; Avhcn this is the Cafe in the Church, or rather in the Trad of Country where the Word is polTeffed and read, that is, when Men arc fuch in the Thoughts ofthe Heart, although not fuch in Dodrine ofthe Lips, then there is Defolation, and the Particu lars juft now mentioned arc it's Abomination; hence, when ye fhall fee the Abomination of Defolation de notes, when any one obferves fuch Things ; what is to be done in fuch Cafe, is^ told afterwards, Verfes 16, 17, 18. Spoken ofl by Daniel the Prophel, fignifies, in the internal Senfe, by the Prophets ; for where any Pro phet is mentioned by his Name in the Word, " it decs not mean that Prophet, but the prophetic Word itfelf, becaufe Names in no Cafe penetrate into Heaven,, fee n. 1876, 1888; neverthelels each Prophet hath a dif tind Signification; vvhat is fignified by Mofcs, Elias, and Elifhah, may be feen in the Preface to Chap, xviii, and n. 2762 ; biit by Daniel is fignified every Thing prophetical concerning the Lord's Coming, and con cerning Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. $, cerning the State of the Church, in the prefent Cafe concerning it's laft State ; Vaftation is much treated of inthe Prophets, and by it in the literal Senfe is figni-. fied the Vaftation ofthe Jewifh and Ifraclitifti Church, but in the internal Senfe is fignified the Vafiation ofthe Church in general, thus alfo the Vaftation whichis now at Hand. Standing in ihe holy Place, fignifies Vaflation as to all Things which are of Good and of Truth ; holy Place is a State of Love and of Faith ; that Place in the internal Senfe denotes State, fee n. 2625, 2^37, 3356, 3387; the holy Principle of that State is the Good which is of Love, and thence the Truth which is of Faith, and Nothing elfe is meant in the Word by what is holy, becaufe thofe Things are from the Lord, vvho is effential Flolinefs or the Sanduary. He ivho readeth let hini careflully obflerve, fignifies that the above Things are well to be noted by thofe who are in the Church, efpecially by thofe who are principled in Love and Faith, vvho come now to be treated of. Then let ihem zvho are in Judaa flee into ibe Mountains, figni-, fies that they who arc of the Church m.ult not look clfevyhcre than to the Lord, thus to Love tovvard^ Him, and to Charity towards their Neighbour; thatby Judasa is fignified the Church, will be Ihewn below; that by Mountain is fignified the Lord Himfelf, but by Mountains Love to Him, ahd Charity towards our Neighbour, may be feen, n. 795, 796, 1430, 2722; according to the Senfe of the Letter the Meaning would be, that when Jerufalem was befieged, as \yas the Cafe, by the Romans, then they fttould not betake themfelves thither, but to the Mountains, according a^ it is written in Luke, "When ye fhall fee Jerufalem " encoinpaffed about vyith Armies, then kno^y ye that " Devaftation is near ; then let them who arc in.Judasa " fiee to the Mountains, and let them who are in l\^ " Midft of, it depart one, and let not them that are in •' the Countries enter thereinto," xxi, 20, 21 ; but the Cafe is there the fame in Refped to Jatiifalem,.vjz;. that 6 C E N E S I S. Chap, xxviii. that in the Senfe of the Letter it is Jerufalem which is underftood, whereas in the internal Senfe it is the Church of the Lord, fee n. 402, 2 1 1 7 ; for all and An gular the Things, which are recorded in the Word concerning the Jewifti and Ifraelitith People, are repre fentative of the Lord's Kingdom in the Heavens, and ofthe Lord's Kingdom in the Earths, that is, of the Church, as hath been often fhewn above ; hence it is, that by Jerufalem in the internal Senfe is no where mearu Jerufalem, nor by Judaea Judaea ; all and lingu lar Things alfo were fuch, as to be capable of repre- fenting the celcflial and fpiritual Things of the Lord's Kingdom, and they were effeded in Order that they might reprefent fuch Things ; by this Means it became poffible fo to write the W^ord, that it might be accord ing to the Apprehenfion of Man who reads it, and ac cording to the Underftanding -of the Angels attendant on Man ; this likewife was the Reafon why the Lord fpake in like Manner, for had he fpoken otherwife, his Word would not have been adequate to the Under ftanding of thofe who read it, efpecially at that Time, jDor to the Underflanding ofthe Angels, thus it would neither have been received by Man, nor underftood by jhe Angels. He -wfio is on the Houfle-top, let him not ga down io take any Thing out -of the Houfle, fignifies that fuch as are principled in the Good of Charity fhould not betake themfelves to thofe Things which appertain to Dodrinals of Faith ; in the Word the Houfe-top fig nifies- the fuperior State of Man, thus his State as to Good ; but thofe Things which are beneath fignify the inferior State of Man, thus his State as to Truth, fee n. 7x0, 1708, 2233, 2-234, 3142, 3538: With Re fped to the State ot a Man of the Church, the Cafe is this ; during the Progrefs of Regeneration, he learns Truth for the Sake of Good, for he hath the Affedion of Truth to this Intent ; byt after that he is regenerated, he then ads from a Principle of Truth and Good *; wixgn he is arrived at this latter State, Ee ought not to* betake Chap, xxviii. GENESIS, j betake himfelf to his former State, for if he fhould do this, he would reafon [ratiacinate) from a Principle of Truth concerning the Good in which he is, and would thereby pervert his State -, for all Reafoning {Raliocina- iion) ceafeth, and ought to ceafe, when Man is in a State to will what is true and good, for in this Cafe he thinks and ads from the Will, confequently from Con- fcience, and not from the Underftanding, as before, and if he was to think and ad again from the Underftand ing, he would fall into Temptations and fink therein ; this then is what is fignified by him who is on the Houfci-top not going down to take any Thing out of his Houli:. And he who is in ihe Field, let him not re~ turn to take his Cloaths, or Coat, fignifies that fuch as are principled in the Good of Truth fhould not betake themfelves from the Good thereof to Dodrinals of Truth ; Field in the Word fignifies that State of Man as to Good; what is meant by Field, may be feen, n. 368,^2971, 3196, 3310, 3317, 3500, 3508; and Garment or Coat fignifies that which cloathes Good, that is, Dodrinals of Truth, for thefe are as Cloathing or Raiment for Good ; that Raiment hath this Signifi cation, may be feen, n. 297, -1073, 2576, 3301. Every one may fee, that Things of a deeper Nature lie concealed herein, than what appear in the Letter, for the Lord Himfelf fpake them. 3653. From thefe Confiderations then it may ap pear, that a State of the Church's Vaftation, as to the good Things of Love and the Truths of Faith, is fully defcribed in thefe Verfes, and at the fame Time they contain an Exhortation and Diredion to thofe, who are principled in fuch good Things and Truths, what they ought to do in fuch Cafe : There are three Kind? of Men within the Church, viz. thofe who are prin cipled in Love to the Lord, thofe who are principled in Charity towards their Neighbour, and thofe who are in the Affedion of Truth ; they who arc in the Firft Pafs, viz. they who are principled in Love to the Lord, ¦« V E N E S I S. Chap, xxviii. Lord, are fpecifically fignified in thefe Words, " Let " thofe zvho are in Jtldaa flee into ihe Mountains :" They who irt in the Second Clafs, viz. they who are prin cipled in Charity towards. their Neighbour, are fpeci fically fignified in' thefe Words, "He who is on ihe " . Houfle-top, let bim not go dozvn to take any Thing out ofl ^' his Houfle:" They who arc in the Third Clals, viz. they who are in the Affedion of Truth, are fpecifically fignified in thefe Words, " He zvho is in the Field, let •* him mt return back lo take his Cloaths." See what was faid and explained above on thefe Words, n. 2454, and what is meant by returning back, and looking behind him. 3654. That Judaea, in the internal Senfe of the Word, does not fignify Judaea, nor in like Manner Je- rijfalem Jerufalem, may appear from feveral Paffages in the Word : In the Word it is not fo often named Judaea, but the Land of Judah, and by the Land of Ju dah, as by the Land of Canaan, is fignified the Lord's Kingdom, confequently alfo the Church, for the Church is the Lord's Kingdom in the Earths ; and this by Reafon that the Lord's celeftial Kingdom was re prefented by Judah or by the Jewifh Nation, and his fpiritual Kingdom by Ifrael or the Ifraelitifh People ; and inafmuch as it was fo reprefented, therefore alfo when Mention is made, in the Word, of that Nation and People, Nothing elfe is fignified thereby jn the in ternal Senfe ; that this is the Cafe, will appear manifeft from what will be faid in the following Pages, by the Divine Mercy of the Lordj concerning Judah and the Land of Judah, and in the mean Time from thefe few Paffages out of the Prophets, " My Beloved had a Vine- " yard in the Horn of a Son of Oil, he fenced it about, " and gathered the Stones out of it, and planted it " with a noble Vine, and built a Tower in the Midft «' of it, and alfo hewed out a Wine-prefs in it, and he " expeded that it would bring forth Grapes, but it " brought forth wild Grapes j and now, O Inhabilanf "of Chap, xxviii. "^^ i> 2, .3, ^ 7 : In this Paffage, in the Senfe of the Letter, tbe pervcrfc State of the Ifraelites and Jews is (treated of, but in the internal Senfe the' perverfe State; ofthe Church is treated oi as reprefented by Ifrael and Judah ; the Inhabitant of Jerufalem i« the Good of the Church ; that Inhabitant denotes Good, or, what is the fame Thing, thofe who are principled in Good, may be feen, ji. 2568, 2451, 2712, 3613; and that Jeru falem is the Church, fee n. 402, 2 1 1 7 ; in like Man ner the Houfe -of Ifrael is fignificative ; that Houfe rclenotefi Xjood, maybe feen, n. 710, 1708, 2233, 2234, 3142, 3538, and that Ifrael denotes the Church, n. 3305 ; in like Manner the Man of Judah, for by Man is fignified Tjuth, fee n. 26J, 749, 1007, 3134, 3310, 3459, and by Judah Good, but with this Difr ference, diat the ,Man bf Judah denotes. Triith ground- -ed in the Good'of Love to the Lord, which is called celeftial Truth, J:hat is, it denotes thofe who are prin cipled in fucih Truth. Again, in the fame Prophet, « He fhall lift up an Enfign for the Nations, and fhall *' gather together t]je Outcafts ofl Iflraef, and fhall col- " led the diflperfei. of Judah from the four Wings ofthe *• Earth: Then 4he Envy of Ephraim fhall depart, and " x^iv&Enem'ies ofjiidah^f^?^^ be, cut-off; Ephraim fhall *' not cTtvy Judah, and J? Heir of Mountains in a fupreme Senfe denotes the Lord, and in a reprefentative Senfe thofe who are principled in Love to Him, thus in the Good of each Love ; that Mountains are thofe Goods, was fliewri above, ri, 365,2! So xxxviii. Ihall *' come forth from, the Houfe of Jehovahv and fhali " water the River of Schittim : Egypt Ihall be for " Waftenefs, and Edotp ihall hs for a Wildernefs of " Waftenefs, by Reafou of Violence to the Sons of " Judah, whofe innocent Blood they have fhed in their " Land : And Judah fhall flit for ever, and Jerufalem ta " Generation: and Generation," iii, 18, 19,20; from all the Particular in this Paffage alfo it is evident, that by Judah is not meant Judah, nor by Jerufalem Jeru falem, but that thereby aie underftcad all thofe wha 5 are Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. 13 are in the holy Principle of Love and Charity, for thefe fliall fit for ever, and to Generatiorr and Generation. So in Malachi, *' Behold I fend my Angel, who ffiall *' prepare the Way before Me, and the Lord whom ye " feek fhall fuddenly come to his Temple, and the *' Angel of the Covenant whom ye defire ; then fhall the " Meat-Oflering of Judah and of 'Jerufalem be flweet t-o Je- " hovah, according to the Days of Eternity, according •' to former Years," iii, i, 4; fpeaking ofthe Lord's Coming ; that at that Time the Meat-Offering of Ju dah and of Jerufalem v/as not fweet to Jehovah, is evident ; hence it is plain that by Judah and Jerufalem are fignified fu&h Things as appertain to the Lord's Church : The Cafe is the fame in other Parts of the Word where Mention is made of Judah, of Ifrael, and of Jerufalem, Hence then it may appear what is ffgni- fied by Judaea in Matthew, viz. the Lord's Church, in the prefent Cafe vaftated, 3655. The Subjed treated of in the preceding Ver fes- in the Evangelift was concerning the Firft and Second State of the Church's Perverfion ; that the Firft State confifted in their beginning no longer to know what is good and what is true, and in difputing about Good and Truth, whence come Falfities, may be feen, n, 3354; and that the. Second State confifted in their defpifing Good and Truth, and alfo in being averfe thereto, and thus in the Expiration of Faith iti the Lord, according to the Degrees of the Ceffation of Charity, may be feen, n, 3487, 3488-: This then is. the Third State treated of which is that of the^efola.^ tion of the Church as to Good and Truth. CHAP- 14 GENESIS. Chip.xxfiir, CHAPTER XXVIIL AND Ifaac called to Jacob, and bleffed him/ and commanded him, and faid unto him, thoU' Ihalt not take a Woman from the Daughters of Ca-^- naan. 2. Arife, go to Padan-Aram, the Houfe of Bethuel the Father of thy Mother, and take to thyfelf thence a Woman from the Daughters of Laban thy Mother'^ Brother. 3. And God Schaddai will blefs thee, and will caufe thee to be fruitful and to multiply, and thou fhalt be for a Company of People. 4. And he will give unto thee the Blefling of Abra ham, to thee and to thy Seed with thee, to inherit the Land of thy Sojournings, which God gave to Abra ham. 5, And Ifaac fent Jacob, and he went to Padan-* Aram, to Laban the Son of Bethuel the Aramsean, the Brother of Rebecca the Mother of Jacob and Efau, 6. And Efau faw that ifaac bleffed Jacob, and fent him to Padan-Aram, to take to himfelf thence a Wo man, in bleffing him, and commanded him faying, thou fhalt not take a Woman of the Daughters of Canaan. 7. And that Jacob hearkened to his Father and to his Mother, and went to Padan-Aram, 8, And Efau faw that the Daughters of Canaan were evil in the Eyes of Ifaac his Father, 9. And Efau went to Iflimael, and took Mahalath the Daughter of Ifhmael Abraham's Son, the Sifter of Nebaioth, over his Females to himfelf for a Woman.- 10. And Jacob went out from Beerflieba, and went to Haran. II. And he lighted upon a Place, and paffed the Night there, becaufe the Sun was fet, and he took of the Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. 1 5 the Stones ofthe Place, and placed them for his Pillows, ^C^/)//«/zi7, or Things of the Head,) and lay down in that Place, 12. And he dreamed, and behold a Ladder fet on the Earth, and it's Head reaching to Heaven, and be hold the Angels of Gonafcending anddefcendingon it. 13. And behold Jehovah ftanding above it, and he faid, I am Jehovah God of thy Father Abraham, and Gx)D of Ifaac, the Land on which thou lieft, to thcc will 1 give it, and to thy Seed, 14, And thy Seed fhall be as the Duft bf the Earth, and thou Ihak break forth to the Sea, and to the Eaft, and to the North, and to the South ; and all the Fami lies ofthe Ground {hall be bleffed in thee, and in thy Seed. 15, And behold I am with thee, and will keep thee in all whither thou goeft, and will bring thee back to this Ground, becaufe I will not leave thee, until I Ihall have done what I have fpoken to thee. 16. And Jacob awoke out of his Sleep, and faid, forely Jehovah is in this Place, and I knew not. 17. And he feared, and faid, how terrible is this Place, this is none other but the Houfe of God, and this is the Gate of Heaven. - I 8, And in the Morning Jacob arofe early, and took the Stone which he had placed for his Pillows, and fet it for a Statue, and poured Oil upon the Head of it. 1 9, And he called the Name of that Place Bethel ; but the Name of the City was Luz at the firft, 20. And Jacob vowed a Vow, faying, if God fhall be with me, and fliall keep me in this Way wherein I yv^lk, and fhall give me Bread to eat, and Raiment to put on. 21. And I fliall return in Peace to the Houfe of my Father, and Jehovah fhall be to me for a God. 22, And this Stone, which I have fet for a Statue, Ihall be the Houfe of God, and all that thou flialt give me, I will in tithing tithe it to thee. '¦'=¦¦'' The j6 35o9. 352?, 3544, 357^' 3599 i but here, and in what follows in this Chapter, Jacob reprefents the Good of that Truth ; hence it is evident, that by thefe Words, " Ifaac called to Jacob," is fignified the Perception df Quality from the Lord as to the Good of Truth. The Grouncl and Reafon why Jacob here reprefents the Good of that Truth js, becaufe now he had taken the Birthright of Efau, and alfo his Blefling, and thus thereby puts on the PerfOn of Efau, but ftill no further than as to the Good of that Truth, viz. the Truth which he before reprefented ; for all Triith, whatfoever be it's Nature and Quality, hath in it Good, inafmuch as Truth is not Truth but by Virtue of Good, it being thence called Truth : By the Birthright (Primogeniture) which he took, and by the Bleffing, he obtained this Privilege over Efau, that his Pofterity fucceeded to the Promife made to Abraham and Ifaac concerning the Land of Canaan, and thus that by him fliould be reprefented the Lord's Divine Natural fPrirtciple], as by Ifaac was reprefeBted the Divirip Rational, ana by Abraham the eflsn- ¦ tial Divine [Principle] ; in Order therefore that the Reprefen tative might fall upon one Perfon, it was permitted that he Ihould thus take from Efau the Birthright, and afterwards the Blefltng : Hence it is that Jacob now reprefents the Good of the natural Principle, but here in the Beginning the Good of that Truth, viz. the Truth which he juft before reprefented. Efau alfo is ftill further treated of, as in the following- Verfes 6, 7, 8, of this Chapter, to the Intent that the Good of Truth, and the interior Truth of Good, of the Lord's Natural [Principle! might Vol. V. C be 1,8 GENESIS. Chap, x;: viii. be reprefented, which could not be reprefented by Jjcob. What is the Nature afid Qi^iality of the Good, v\liich Jacob here repre fents, will appear from what foll()w.s. 3660. " And blelTed hira" — ihpt hereby is fignified that thcis Co"nJL]n£lion vvas effeded, appears from the Signification ot being i .blefled, as denoting to be conjoined, fee n. ,3504, 3514, 353°> 3565, 3584. The Ground and Reafoq why Ilaac the Father now blelles Jacob the Son, notwithftanding his having come in Xreachery, and taken the Bleffing from Efau, and notwithftand ing Ifaac's having fliuddered at that Deed, as is evident from the preceding Chapter, Verfe 33 to 35, is, becaufe he now perceived that it was the Pofterity of Jacob, not of Efau, which ihpuld poffefs the Land of Canaan ; hence the Blefling from Ifaac was confirmed ; but the Treachery at which Ifaac fhud- 4ered, fignified and predicted wliat was treacherous in the Pof terity of Jacob as to Reprefentativirfs, viz. that they were very far from fincerelyor in Heart reprefenting the Divine or celeftial Things of the Lord's Kingdom, and were thus altogether unlike the Ancient Church, being merely in Things external feparate from aey internal Principle, and not even this, inafmuch as they fo often fell away into open Idolatries. What is meant by being "conjoined, or by Conjundion, which is fignified in theinternal ;S?n!"e by being bleifed, was Ihewn above, viz. that the Natural Principle as to Good and as to Truth j.fhoiild be adjoined to the Rational, or, what is the fame Thing, the External Man to theinternal; for to the Intent that the Lor.! might make his Natural [Principle] Divine, he was to implant' therein fiich Good and Truth a.s might correfponi.1 with the Good and Truth of the Divine RatioiKil [Principlej ; without correfponding Goods and Truths no Conjundion can. have Place : , T.he Goods and Truths ofthe Natural r'ri..cipte, or fuch .is are proper tothe ,riatural Man, are innumerable, n.nil ib inniiraerable that they can fc.irce be known by Man as to their molt common Genera, .hovvfoever natural Good and Tiutli, when it is mentioned, may appear to Man as one fiiriple Principle ; fbr the whole natural .Principle, and all that is in it, confifts of fuL-h innumerable Genera cf Goods and Truths ;...ancl this being ihe'Cufe, it may appear, that there are Goods and Truths of the natural Princi ple, ill which the Goods and Truths of the Rational Principle may abide, and that there are Goods and Truths of the riatural Principle, in which the Goods and Truths of the Rational can not abide ; confequently, that tlici-e are Goods and Truths of the natural Principle, v/hich may be adjoined to the Goods and Truths of the Rational by Correfpondence ; the- Subjed treated of in this and the following Chapjers, is concerning fuch Goods and Chap, xxviii; GENESIS, ,19 and Truths. To know thefe Goods and Truth?, and to diftin- guilh them from each other, and further to examine their Q^ia- lities, and thus how they are adapted for Conjiindion, is not fo much within the Reach of Man's Capacity, fo long as he thinks not from an interior Principle, or under the Influence of Illumination frbm the Light of Heaven, for in this Cafe fiich Things appear both obfcure and unpleafant to him ; neverthelefs they are adequate to the Apprehenfion and Underftanding ofthe Angels, and alfo to the Apprehenfion of Spirits ; for their Thoughts are not interrupted with the Concerns. of worldly, corporeal, and terreftrial Things, as heretofore whilft they lived inthe World; thefe latter, viz. Angels and Spirits, are in the Pleafantnefs of Intelligence, and the Bleffednefs of Wifdom, when they have a Perception of fuch Things from the internal Senfe of the Word ; for in this Cafe the Divine [Principle] is refplendent, becaufe the Subjed treated of in the internal Senfe is concerning the Lord, and in the reprefentative Senfe concern ing the Church and Regeneration ; hence they are in the Divine Sphere of the Lord, and of his Ends and Ufes. ' 3661. "And commanded him, and faid unto him" — that hereby is fignified Refledion ahd Perception thence, appears frdm the-Signification of commanding in the hiftorical Parts of the Word, as denoting to refled ; and from the Signification of faying, as denoting to perceive, fee n. 1791, 1815, 1819, 1822, 1898, 1919, 2080, 2619, 2862; Refledion is the Eicam.lha- tion of- a Thing, as to the Circumftances thereof, and alfo as to it's Q^iality, hence comes Perception. 3662. " Thou fhalt not take a Wonian of the Daughters of *' Canaan"— that hereby is fignified if fo be he (hould not be con joined to the Affijdions of what is falfe and evil, appears from the Signification of taking a Woman, as denoting to be atfoci- ated to or conjoined with ; and from the Signification of Daugh ters, as denoting Affedions, fee n. 568, 2362, 3024; and from the Signification of Canaan, as , denoting what is falfe and evil, fee n. 1093, II40, 1141, 1167, 1205, 1444, 1573, 1574,. 1868. ' ¦ 3663. "Arife" — thathereby is fignified if fo be he would elevate that Good thence, appears from the Sig'nification of arifing, as iitiplying fome Degree of Elevation, fee n. 2401, 2785, 2912, 2927, 3171 ; in the JDrefert Cafe an Elevation from fiich Things as are fignified by the Daughters of Canaan, to iuch Things as'are fignified by the Daughters of Laban, who are treated of prefently. ' ' 3664. " Go to Padan-.A.ram" — that hereby are fignified the Knovvledges of fuch Truth, appears from the .Signification of C 2, Aram 20 GENESIS. Chap, xxviii. Aram or Syria, as denoting Knowledges, fee n. 1232, 1234, 3249 ; the Ground and Reafon why Padan-Aram denotes Know ledges of Truth is, becaufe it was in Syria of Rivers, where N-ahor, Bethuel, and Laban dwelt, and that by Syria are figni- ^ed the Knowledges of Truth, may be feen, n. 3051 ; Padan- .Aram is alfo mentioned above, Chap. xxv. 20, and below^ Chap, xxxi, 18, in which Paflages it likewife fignifies the Knowledges of Truth. 3665. " The Houfe of Bethuel the FatTier of thy Mother, and " take to thyfelf thence a Woman from the Daughters of Laban '* thy Mother's Brother" — that hereby' is fignified collateral ex ternal Good, and thence Truth which Vvas to be conjoined, ap pears from the Reprefentation of Bethuel, as denoting the Good of the Gentiles of the firft Clafs, fee n. 2685 ; and from the Re prefentation of Laban, as denoting the Affedion of Good in the natural Man, or the Affedion of external Good, and properly collateral Good of a comraon Stock, fee n. 3129, 3130, 3160, 3612 ; and frcin the Signification of taking a Woman from his Daughters, as denoting to be affociated^to or be conjoined with the Affedions of Truth thence derived ; that to take a Woman detiotes^to be conjoined, is evident, and that Daughters are Af fedions, may be feen, n. 568, 2362, 3024; hence it appears what thefe W'^ords fignify, viz. that the Good of the natural Priiici^le here reprefented by Jacob was to be conjpijied to Truths derived from collateral external Good. The Cafe here in is this ; in the Courfe of Man's Regeneration, he is led of the Lord at firft as an Infant, afterwards as a Child, next as a young Man, and laftly as an Adult ; tbe Truths whichhe learns as an Infant Child, are altogether external and corporeal, for as yet he is unable to apprehend interior Truths ; thofe Truths are 110 other than Kiiowledges of fuch Things,, as contain in their inmoft Principle Things Divine ; for there are Knowledges of Things, which do not contain any Thing Divine in their inmoft Principle, and there are Knowledges which do contain ; the Knowledges, which do contain what is Divine, are fuch, that they can admit interior Truths more and more fucceffively and rn Order ; whereas the Knowledges, which do not contain what is Divine, are fiich, that -they do not admit, but rejed fach inte rior Truths; for the Knowledges of Good and Truth external and corporeal are like Ground, which according to it's Quahty admits Seeds of fuch and fuch a Nature, and no other, bringing to Maturity one Kind of Seeds, and fufFocating another ; the Knowledges, which contain in their inmoft Principle what is Divine, admit in them Truth and Good both fpiritual and ce leftial, ppfl'efling this Capacity by Virtue of the Divine Princi pis Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. n pie which is within, and which difpofes them thereto ; but the Knowledges, which do not contain in them what is Divine, ad. mit only what is falfe and evil, fuch being their Nature : Thofe Knowledges of external and corporeal Truth, which are admifr five of Truth and Good fpiritual and celeftial, are here fignified bythe Daughters of Laban of the Houfe of Bethuel ; but thofe which are not thus admiffive, are fignified by the Daughters of Canaan. The Knowledges, which are learnt from Infancy to Childhood, are as it were Veflels moft common (or general), which are defigned to be filled with Goods, and in Proportion as they are filled, Man is enlightened ; if the VeflTels be fuch, as to admit into them genuine.Goods, in this Cafe Man is enlightened from the Divine [Principle] which is therein, and this fuccef fively more and more ; but if they be fuch, as not to admi.t of genuine Goods, in this Cafe Man is not enlightened, although if may appear as if he was, but fuch Appearance is only tjhe EfFed of a dclufive Light \^Lumen^, which is that of the falfe and evil Principle, whereby he is more and more obfeured as to what is good and true. Such Knowledges are manifold, and fo mani fold that they can fcarce be enumerated as to their Genera, ftill lefs be diftinguifhed as to their Species, for they are derived in Multiplicity from the Lord through tbe Rational Principle into the Natural ; fome flow in immediately through the Good of the Rational Principle, and thence into the Good of the Natural, and alfo into the Truth of this Good, and thence further into the external Natural or corporeal Principle, where tbey branch off into various Branches ; fome alfo flow in mediately througl* the Truth of the Rational Principle intcx the Truth of the Natural, and alfo into the Good of this Truth, and thence further into the external Natural or corporeal Principle, fee n. 3573, 3616: They are like Nations, Families, and Houfes, and like the Con-s fanguinities and Affinities therein, in.that there are fome which defcend in a right Line from the firft Father, and fome which defcend in an oblique Line or more and more collateral ; in the Heavens thefe Things are in the higheft Degree of Diftindnefs, for aU the Societies therein are diftinguifhed according to the Ge nera and Species of Good and Truth, and the Proximities thence derived, fee n. 685, 2508, 2524, 2556, 2739, 3612; which Societies, the moft ancient People, who were celeftial Men, reprefented by the Circumftance of dwelling together diftinguifhed into Nations, Families, and Houfes, fee n. 470, 471,483, 1159, 1246 ; hence alfo it was enjoined, that they who were of the reprefentativfi Church, fhould contrad Marriages within the Families of their own Nation, for thus they might reprefent Heaven, aad Conjundion as to Good and Truth ; as was the Cafe 21 GENESIS. Chap- xxviii. Cafe here with Jacob, in that it was enjoined that he flionld go to the Houfe of Bethuel the Father of his Mother, and fhould take to himfelf thence a Woman' from the Daughter- of Laban his Mother's Brother. As to what concerns tht: K"'Owledges of external or corporeal Truth, which are from collateral Good, and, as was faid, contain in them what is Divine, and thus are admiflive of genuine Goods, fuch as are the Knowledges with Infant Children who are afterwards regeserated, they are in general fuch as are contained in the hiftorical Parts of the Word^ as in what is faid therein of Paradife, of the firfl: Man, of the Tree of Lifein theMidfl;of Paradifc, and of the Tree of Sci ence, where the deceiving Serpent was ; thefe are Knowledges •which contain in them what is Divine, and admit into them Goods and Truths fpiritual and celeftial, becaufe they reprefent and fignify thofe Goods and Truths : Such Knowledges are alfo contained in the other hiftorical Parts of the Word, as in what is faid ofthe Tabernacle, and ofthe Temple, and of the Con ftrudion of each ; in like Manner in what is faid ofthe Garments of Aaron and of his Sons ; alfo of the Feafls of Tabernacles, of the Firft- fruits of Harveft, and of unleavened Bread, and of other like Things ; when thefe Knowledges are known and thought of by an Infant Child, then the attendant Angels think of the Divine Things which they reprefent and fignify ; and in afmuch as the Angels are affeded therewith, their Affedion is communicated, and caufes the Delight and Pleafure vvhich the Child experiences therein, and prepares his Mind to receive pjenuine Truths and Goods : Such and very many others are the Knowledges of external and corporeal Truth derived- from col lateral Good. 3666. Verfes 3, 4, 5. And God Schaddai will blefs thee, and will caufe thee to befruitfid and to fvultiply, and thou fhalt ke for a Company of People. And fie will give unto thee the Bleffing of Abra- ha-nii to thee and to ihy Seed with tbee, to caufe thee to inherit^ the Land of thy Sojou-mi-ngs , which God gave to Abraham. And ifaac fent Jacob, and he went to Padan-Aram, to Laban the Son of Be thuel the Aramcean, the B-rother of Rebecca the Mother of Jacob and £fau.[ God Schaddai fhall blefs thee, fignifies the Temptations of that Truth and Good, whereby Conjundion was effeded "' And will caufe thee to be fruitful and to multiply, fignifies Goods and Truths thence derived: And thou flialt' be for a Company of People, fignifies Plenteoufnefs : And he will give- unto thee the Bleffing of Abraham, fignifies Conjundion of the effential Divine [Principle] with the Good and Truth of the natural Principle : To thee and to thy Seed with thee, fignifies with the Good and Truth thence derived : To caufe thee to in-. herit; Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. 23 herit the Land of thy Sojournings, fignifies the Life of Inftruc- tions : Which God gave to Abraham, fignifies which is frora the Divine [Principle]: And Ifaac fent Jacob, fignifies Begin niiig of.Exiflence : And he went to Padan-Aram, fignifies here, as above, the Knowledges of that Truth : To Laban the Son of Bethuel the Aramaean, fignifies collateral Good : The Bro ther of Rebecca the Mother of Jacob and Efau, fignifies Affinity derived from the Ivlother with the Good of Truth which is Ja cob, with the Truth of Good which is Efau. 3667, " God Schaddai fliall blefs thee" — that hereby are fig- njfied the Temptations of that Truth and Good whereby Con jundion was effeded, appears from the Signification of God Schaddai, as denoting Temptations, of which Signification we ftall fpeak prefently ; and from the Signification of being blef fed, as denoting Conjundion, concerning vyhich Signification feen. 3504, 3514, 3530,^ 35^5' 3584; inafmuch as bjr Jacob is now reprefented the Good of Truth, as was fhewn above, n. 3659, therefore that Good and Truth is here underftood by thee. The Ground and Reafon why God Schaddai fignifies Temptations is, becaufe in ancient Times they diftinguifhed the Supreme, God, or the Lord, by various Names, and this accord ing to his Attributes, and according to the Goods which are from Him, and alfo according to the Truths, wiiich every one knows are manifold : They who were of the Ancient Church, by all thefe Denominations meant to defcHbe only One God, viz. the Lord, whom they called Jehovah : But after that the Church declined f.roin Good and Truth, and at the fame Time from this Wifdom, they began to worfhip as many Gods as there were Denominations of the one God, infomuch that every Na tion, and at length every Family, acknowledged one of tfiecn for it's own particular God; hence exifted fo many Gods, of ¦whom Mention is made in the Word throughout : The Cafe was fimilar in the Family of Therah the Father of Abraham, and alfo ,in the Houfe of Abraham itfelf, for that he worfhipped other Gods, may be feen, n. 1356, 2559, and efpecially the God Schaddai, n. J992 ; that the Worfhip of this God remained in that, Houfe, is evident alfo from thefe Words in Mofes, " I ap- *' peared to Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, in the God Schaddai, and " hy. my Name Jehovah I was not known to them," Exod. vi. 3; hence it is that it was faid to Abraham, " / am the God Schaddai, " walk thou before Me, and be entire," Gen. xvii. 1 ; and that it is here faid by Ifaac to Jacob, " The God Schaddai (hall *" blefs thee:" That this is the Cafe, is alfo evident from what follows in t?his Chapter, that after the Lord had faid to Jacob in gi Dream, " I am Jehovah God of thy Fafhef Abraham, and 6 ' ' . "God 24 GENESIS. Chap, xxviii. " God of ifaac," Verfe 1 3, ftill Jacob afterwards faid, "If " God ftfall be with me, and fhall keep me in this Way wherein " I walk, and fhall give me Bread to eat, and Raiment to put *' on, and I fhall return in Peace to the Houfe of my Father, " and Jehovah fhall le to rne for a God" Verfes 20, 21 ; hence it is evident, that neither did the Houfe of Jacob acknowledge Jthovih, but yet was willing to acknowledge him, in Cafe he proved a Benefador ; as is exadly the Cafe at this Day in Gentile Chriftendom. As to what concerns God Schaddai in particular.the Lord was called by this Name in the AncientChurch with Refped to Temptations, and to Bleffings and Benefits after Temptations, as was fheWn above, n, 1992 ; hence then it is that by the God Schaddai, in the internal Senfe, are fignified Temptations. That by Temptations is effeded a Conjundion of Good and Truth, fee vvhat was faid and (hewn above concerning Temptations, 11. 2i8g. ^668. '* And will caufe thee to be fruitful and multiply" — that hereby, are fignified Goods and Truths thence derived, ap pears frotti the Signification pf being fruitful, as being predica ted of Good, and of being multiplied, as being predicated of Truth, fee n. 43, 55, 913, 983, 2846, 2847. 3669. " And thou fhalt be for a Company of People" — that hereby is fignified Plenteotifilefs, may appear without Explica tion ; Company of People is efpecially predicated of Truths, for by People in the Word are fignified thofe who are in Truth, Tee n. 1255, 1260, 2928, 3581 ; whereas by Nations are fignifldd thofe who are in Good, fee n. 1259, 1260, 1416, 1849. THe Reafon why it is here called a Company of People, is, becaufe ihe Siibjed treated of is concerning the Good of Truth repre fented by Jsicob ; for there is a Diftindion to be made betwed.i Good which is derived from Truth, and Good from which Trtifli is derived ; the Good which is derived from Truth is what is here reprefented by Jacob, and the Good from whieh Truth is derived is What is reprefented by Efau ; the Good vvhich is derived frorn Truth is the Inverfe df the Good from which Truth is de^ rived; in the Good which is derived from Truth, the regenerate are principled previous to their Regeneration, whereas in the Good froin which Truth is derived, they are principled vvhen they become regenerate ; that their State is inverted^ may be feen, n. 3539, 3548, 3556. 3563, 3570, 3576, 3603. 3670. " Arid will give to thee the Bleffing of Abraharri"—. th^t hereby is fignified Gorfjundion of thfe eflfential Divine [Principle] with the Good and Truth of the Nat-ursl Principle, appears fro*n fhe Signification of Blefling, as denoting Con jundion, fee above, n. 3660, 3667 ; and frotri the Reprefenta tion Chap, xxviii. GENESIS. 25 tion of Abrahairi, as denoting the Lord's eflTential Divine [Prin ciple], which is cafled the Father, feen. 2011, 3251, 3439; and inafmuch as thefe Words are fpoken to Jacob, by whom will be reprefented the Lord's Divine Natural [Principle] as to Divine Good and Truth therein, therefore the Conjundion of the effential Divine [Principle] with the Good and Truth of the Natural is wbat is fignified, in the internal Senfe, by thefe Words, " He will give thee the BleflTing of Abraham." In the Senfe of the Letter it is the Poffeffion of the Land of Canaan which is meant by the Blefling of Abraham, and alfo by the Words which follow, " To caufe thee to inherit the Land of thy Sojournings, " which God gave to Abraham ;" thefe Words are alio con ceived according to this Senfe by all thofe, who do not believe thatthe hiftorical Parts of the Word contain Things rnore hea venly and fecret, efpecially by the Jewifh Nation, which thence claims to itfelf Privileges above every other Nation and People ; their Fathers underftood ,the above Words in the fame literal. Senfe, and particularly Jacob, whofe Nature and Q^iality may appear from what was faid juft above, n. 2667, viz. that he did not know Jehovah, nor was willing to acknowledge him, unlefs he would give him Things corporeal and worldly ; but that neither Abraham, nor Ifaac, nor Jacob were underftood, but that by Jacob is reprefented the Lord as'to the Natural Principle which he would make Divine, is abundantly manifeft from the Explications above : That it is a Thing of Indifference what be • the Qi^iality of the Man who reprefents, whether he be evil or good, and that evil Men may alike reprefent, and did reprefent the Lord's Divine [Principle], may be feen, n. 665, 1097, 1361 ; the fame may appear from the Reprefentatives which exift even at this Day; for all Kings, whofoever they are and of whatfoever Quality, by Virtue of the Principle of Royalty apper taining to them, reprefent the Lord ; in like Manner all Priefts, whofoever or of whatfoever Qi^iality they are, by Virtue of the Prieftly Principle ; the Principle of Royalty (Regium) and the; Prieftly Principle (Sacerdotale) is Holy, whatfoever be the Na ture and Quality of the Perfon who minifters therein ; hence it is, that the Word taught by a wicked Perfon is alike holy as when taught by a good Perfon, and alfo the Sacrament of Bap- tifm and the Holy Supper, and the like ; hence alfo it may ap pear, that no King can in any Sort claim to himfelf any Thing ofthe Holy Principle appertaining to his Royalty, nor any Priefl any Thing ofthe Holy Principle appertaining to his Prieflhood ; in Proportion as either claims any Thing thereof to himfelf, or attributes it to himfelf, he is fo far a fpiritual Thief, and brands himfelf with the Mark and Charader of fpiritual Theft; and VpL. V. ' D alfo 26 GENESIS. Chap. ^?vin, alfo in Proportion as he doeth Evil, that is, adeth contrary to what is juft and equitable, and contrary to what is good and true, in the fame Prop rtion a King puts off the Reprefentative of Holy Royalty, and a Prieft the Reprefentative of Holy Prieft- hood, and reprefents the Oppofite : Hence in the Reprefentative Jewifh Church fo many Laws were enjoined concerning the Holy Principle, by which Priefts efpecially fliould be influenced during their Miniilration ; on which Subjed, by the Diving Mercy ofthe Lord, more wil! be faid in what follovj'S. -3671. " To thee and to thy Seed with thee" — that hereby is fignified with the Good and Truth therice derived, appears front the Reprefentation of Jacob, who is here meant by theei as de noting the Good of Truth, or Good which is derived froii Truth, concerning which fee above ; and from the Signification of Seed, as denoting the Good andTruth of Faith, fee n. 1025, 1447, 1610, 2848, 3373; with thee fignifies that it was'ad- joined to the Good of Truth, which is Jacob. The Cafe' is fimilar, in Refped to Good and Truth, as in Refped to Seeds and Ground ; interior Good is as the Seed which brings forth, but only in good Ground ; exterior Good .
