INTRODUCTORY NOTL

The matter comprised in the following pages has been
segregated from a large mass of genealogical material con
cerning the Motts of New York and New England that has
been gathered by the writer during the last fifteen years
with the intention of publishing a comprehensive history of
the descendants of Adam Mott of Hempstead.
With this end in view, in 1899, a brief sketch of the
earlier generations of the Long Island family was published
by him in pamphlet form, followed by a second, in 1906,
somewhat amplified in its scope, both intended to arouse
interest in the subject, and to enlist the co-operation of
those allied by blood and marriage. To the edition of 1906
the reader is referred for a more extended account of the
Hempstead patriarch and his ten sons than it is pertinent
to include in this publication. The descendants of two of
the younger sons have been indicated in detail by Cornell
in his very interesting book, "Adam and Anne Mott." The
descent in the male lines from another son has been given by
the writer in volume xxxvi of the "New York Genealogical
and Biographical Record" (1905). And in the September, 1906,
number of the " Genealogical Exchange " (Buffalo, N. Y.),
may be found a condensed sketch of the Dutchess County
branch descended from one of the older sons, that was early
established in Nine Partners, and at the close of the Revo
lutionary War, for political causes, removed to the Canadian
line.

Since the publication of the 1906 edition of the pamphlet,
very much matter has been collected by the writer relating
to early families of the name other than that of the Hemp
stead settler. Of two of these, the Portsmouth, R. I., and
the Scituate, Mass., families, brief mentions are made in
the following pages. Early in the Colonial period, follow
ing the natural trend of migration, scions of both of these
races, apparently more enterprising in spirit, distributed
themselves along the Connecticut seaboard, merging with
those from the more conservative Long Island stock who
had crossed the Sound. So that, by the middle of the
eighteenth century, southern New England and New York,
together with New Jersey, had become the home of numerous
Motts whose origin it is well nigh impossible at this time
to determine without a somewhat comprehensive study of
all the groups. The enterprise has proved so formidable
in its character that its consummation has been delayed
much beyond anticipation, and must be the writer's explan
ation for issuing at this time, in advance of the completed
whole, this account of one of the Dutchess County families.

FAMILY HI5TORY

It was in or about the year 1762 that James Mott re
moved with his family from Long Island, in the State of
New York, to the Nine Partners Patent in Dutchess County,
on the east side of the Hudson River. A journey of seventy-
five miles "as the crow flies," with wife and at least five
young children, and with the personal effects of a household —
dependent on the slow progress of an ox-drawn farm wagon —
was no trifling undertaking. The course was probably to
Hempstead Harbor, on the Sound, thence by barge across
water to a suitable landing place, perhaps at New Rochelle,
from which the long and tedious march proceeded over the
hills, through the farms and woods the length of Westchester
County, to its destination within the bounds of the Nine
Partners Patent. The family, at the time of the migration,
was made up of the father, James Mott, then in his thirty-
ninth year, his wife Anna, thirty-four, James, hardly twelve,
John, nine, Jemima, seven, Zebulon, five, and Anna, two. If
Jesse were born at the time, he could have been but a babe
in arms. The Nine Partners Patent was already the home
of more than one household of Motts. Two years earlier,
Joseph, the grandson of the patriarch of the Long Island
family, Adam Mott, with two sons already at man's estate,
had settled in Crom Elbow Precinct, on the banks of the
Hudson, and but ten miles distant from the spot that was to
become the home of James and Anna. Back, among the
hills had gathered a little colony of Long Island and Con
necticut families, sturdy, industrious farming people, not a
few belonging to the community of Friends. The place was
at almost the geographical centre of Dutchess County, in
the region drained by the tributaries of Wappinger Creek,
that itself tumbles into the great river below Poughkeepsie,
and in a precinct that subsequently (in 1788) became the
township of Washington. The neighborhood had been settled
as early as 1750, and the presence of a Rogers family there,
possibly relatives of Anna, may have been a controlling
reason in the selection of the Mott home. The settlement,
now known as Mechanic, was on the direct road that ran

from the river to the State line. Here Samuel Mabbett
about that year, 1760, built a store; later a Friends' Meeting
House was erected, and that was followed by the famous
Nine Partners School, opened in 1796. The Mott farm was
on the south side of the road mentioned. Here James Mott
and his wife Anna passed the rest of their days. Other
children came to them, Rhoda, Samuel, Martha and Deborah,
the last born only four months before the father died in 1770,
at the age of 47. Tradition is silent concerning the characters
of James and Anna Mott, but the lives led by their sons and
grandsons bear eloquent testimony to the moral and Christian
atmosphere that pervaded the household. The father's death
left heavy burdens upon the widow. James, the eldest son,
had just passed his twentieth birthday, and was to be her
mainstay in the management of the farm. John, the next,
was but seventeen, and Jemima fifteen, the others, seven
in number, all too young to be of service, and all needing
a mother's watchful care. The first break in the family
circle, following the father's death, was the taking away of
the little child Deborah, who died two years later. Then
came the years of anxiety and unrest, when rumors of wars
penetrated even to this peace loving community. The strip
ling Zebulon, entered the service of the State and did duty
on the river in skirmishes with the Tories, and in the efforts
of the militia in the prevention of reinforcements reaching
Burgoyne. In 1780 John married, and the next year Zebulon
followed his example. In 1783 Jesse left the family home
and went north to Saratoga County where he soon married
and settled. In 1791 Zebulon followed his brother to Sara
toga, and in 1804 John removed to Coeymans. Four years
later, James died, leaving a widow and nine children, of
whom the boy Denton, the eldest, was but nineteen; the
children of this family, with their mother, in course of time,
went away from Washington, leaving there, of the original
household, only Samuel, the youngest son of James and Anna,
who continued to occupy the farm which had been his
father's, augmented by subsequent purchases of his own,
until his death in 1830. In 1831 Samuel's widow and children
sold the estate then consisting of 147 J^ acres, and the last
descendants in the male line of James and Anna Mott passed
out of the history of Dutchess County.

The fortunes of the several sons of the family may be
followed in the pages of this Genealogy. It is a subject of
deep regret to the writer that he has been unable to discover
evidence sufficient to indisputably prove the parentage of
James Mott, or even to indicate with certainty the stock
from which he came. The earliest contemporary record of
him is found in the Huntington Church books, wherein it
is written that "James Mott, Jr.," "of Hempstead," was mar
ried, Feb. 2, 1747/8, to Anna Rogers of Huntington. That
this was the Dutchess County couple is established without
any doubt by the family record in the hands of the Saratoga
descendants. One, then, naturally turns to Hempstead for
the earlier history of the family. Just what was meant by
the appellation "Jr." in the marriage record is not clear.
It is only evidence that an older man of the same name was
a resident of the neighborhood, who may or may not have
been his father, and possibly not even a relative. The record
in Saratoga places his birth in Oct., 1723, and certainly there
was living in Hempstead at that time, and for some years
later, a James Mott, son of John, and grandson of the patri
arch Adam of Hempstead. This James was in possession
of a recorded cattle mark, and occupied in 1727 land which
his father had conveyed to him shortly before, adjoining his
own (John's) at Near Rockaway. This is the last known of
him; but in 1758 one "James Mott, Jr.," recorded a cattle
mark that bore so close a relation to those of the first James
and his father, John, as to make it extremely probable that
they were of one family. Moreover, the names of James
Mott and James, Jr., disappear from the Hempstead records
after the year 1758, suggesting the death of the older man,
and the removal of the younger. With the facts relating to
the Dutchess County man entirely harmonizing with the
assumption that he was of the Adam Mott stock, it will be
interesting at this juncture, to briefly consider the history of
the three earlier generations of that family
Adam Mott* had come to this country sometime before
1645, from the county of Essex, England. As in his will of
1681 he declared that he was then "about sixty years of age,"

it follows that 1621 was approximately the date of his birth,
and that he was twenty-six when, in 1647, he married in the
Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, Jane Hulet, a maid from
the county of Bucks. He early removed to Long Island,
eventually establishing himself on the North Shore, near the
head of Hempstead Harbor, and here he ended his days, probab
ly soon after the year 1682, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and a
large family of children. John, who was one of the sons of Jane
Hulet, was born, undoubtedly on Long Island, but before
Hempstead had become the family home, about the year 1658
(he was 23 in 1681). In the division of the Hempstead lands
he became the owner of a large tract in the southern part of
the township at what was a little later called Near Rockaway,
and this was his home. He married Sarah, the daughter of
Capt. John Seaman, and was living as late as 1727, when he
conveyed, by deed, his homestead to his son Patrick, mention
ing therein "a deed of gift bearing date with the present" of
adjoining land then in the occupation of his son James. There
is no record of the names and birth dates of his children, but
in the original manuscript census of Hempstead, taken in 1698,
they were enumerated as John, Jeames, Sarah and Martha, the
last being probably very young. Patrick and Henry were born
later. It is probable that " Jeames " was born between 1685
and 1690, perhaps at the earlier date, for in 1706, when he then
would have been twenty-one, he recorded his cattle mark.
There is no record in Hempstead of the marriage of James, nor
does the christian name of his wife appear. We may surmise
that he continued to occupy the farm at Near Rockaway that
his father had conveyed to him by the " deed of gift ". It is
highly probable that he had a son of the same name who in
1758 recorded a cattle mark very similar to his own. And it is
very reasonable to believe that this James, Jr., was the man
who married Anna Rogers. The sale of the Long Island farm
is not on record. Possibly at the time of the migration, James,
the father, was still alive, for he would have been not more
chusetts Bay Colony in 1635, ^^d three years later removed to Portsmouth,
Rhode Island. By his wife Sarah he had sons, Jacob, Eleazer and Gershom,
and had brought here three older sons by a previous wife, John, Adam and
Jonathan. Thompson, in his History of Long Island, makes the Hemp
stead Adam belong to this family, and the error has been repeated over
and again by other writers.

than seventy-seven years of age. Or, just as likely, James
parted with his interest in the paternal acres to a brother or
brothers who, continuing to occupy and cultivate the lands,
saw no necessity for recording the instrument, even if one
had been executed.
While John Mott was mowing his salt-marsh acres at
Near Rockaway, his older brother James, who had been
baptized in the Dutch Church of New Amsterdam, Oct. 15,
1651, was living, in somewhat different surroundings, in
Mamaroneck, across the Sound. In 1670 he married Mary
Redman, the step-daughter of John Richbell, one of the
leading spirits of that community, an opulent merchant who
had formerly been at Charlestown, Mass., and was engaged
in the shipping trade with the West Indies. The Mamaroneck
Census of 1698 gave to James Mott children, then living,
Elizabeth, Grace, James, Phebe and Martha. He was styled
in contemporaneous records "captain," and in 1702 was a
vestryman of the English church at Rye where the Episco
palians of Mamaroneck attended service. His wife Mary
had died at some date prior to 1698, and he married, second,
Elizabeth, to whom were granted letters of administration
on his estate, Nov. 27, 1707. Of his son James but little is
known. He inherited under his grandmother Richbell's
will of 1700, appears as a resident of Mamaroneck from time
to time, and March 27, 1735, "affirmed" as to his father's
signature. This is the last known of him. A James Mott,
yeoman of Mamaroneck, perhaps the same, was married at
Flushing, 9th of 3d mo., 1717, to Jane Burling, who was born
17th of sth mo., 1684, daughter of Edward and Grace, Friends.
A James Mott of Mamaroneck died there 13th of 2nd mo.,
1773, a member of the same persuasion, and William Sutton
was constituted the administrator of his estate, but the records
disclose nothing as to his identity or his heirs. It was
possible, so far as the dates alone are considered, for our
"James Mott, Jr.," "of Hempstead," who was born in 1723
and married Anna Rogers in Huntington in 1748, to have
been the son of the second James of Mamaroneck, by his
wife Jane Burling; but thus far no evidence is adduced that
renders it likely. It would seem more probable that the male
line of the Mamaroneck branch died out or removed. The
James Mott who was living in Mamaroneck in 1814, and later,

prominent as a Friend, husband of the famous Lucretia Mott,
was a descendant of, Adam Mott, the youngest son of the
Hempstead patriarch by his last wife, and not a descendant,
as has been carelessly asserted, of the earlier James of
Mamaroneck. Besides the two sons of Adam of Hempstead already
mentioned, James" and John," the records give him eight
others: Adam," the first born, Henry," Joseph," Gershom,"
Richbell," Charles," William," and a younger Adam." None of
these could, presumably, have been the progenitor of our James.
The oldest, Adam," left an only son of the same name, who
was of Staten Island, with an only son Richbell.' Henry"
died in his father's lifetime, leaving three children, probably
daughters. Joseph" was of Cow Neck, on the North Shore,
had a large family, of whom but one, Joseph, Jr., was of an
age to have enabled him to have been the father of our James,
and his posterity is known. Gershom" followed the Bowne
family into New Jersey, and the history of his son James" is
known. Richbell" was of Great Neck, with sons Edmund,"
Richbell" and Richard," whose families are known, the latter
being the father of a James,' merchant of New York, some
time of Mamaroneck, and father of Richard,' the Quaker
preacher. Charles" was of Cow Neck, and while there is
much uncertainty as to the fate of his sons, it is safe to
assert that neither could have been the father of our James.
William" was of Great Neck, and the ancestor of Valentine'
Mott, the famous surgeon of New York. He had but one
son, William," born in 1709 (too late to have been the father
of our James), whose descendants have been given by the
writer in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record,
volume xxxvi. Adam," the youngest son of the first Adam,
lived and died at Cow Neck, and was the father of but two
sons, Adam" and Stephen.'
Mention has been made on a preceding page of another
Adam Mott, who was at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1638.
He died in 1661, leaving sons John," Adam," Jonathan," Jacob,"
Eleazer' and Gershom." Probably, though from different
counties in England, the two Adams were of a common stock.
The history of the Portsmouth man, and that of his second
son Adam," is so well known that it is impossible, to-day, for
either man to be confounded with the Hempstead patriarch.

Very little concerning the Portsmouth family has been pub
lished, and the following fragmentary notes are inserted
here, because of the possibility that "James, Jr.," of Hemp
stead came from that race.
John," the eldest son of Adam, born in 1621, was living
in Portsmouth in 1655. Adam." the second, born in 1623,
married Mary Lott, was dead in 17 10, leaving two sons,
Adam," born 1650, died unmarried, 1676, and John,' born
1670-1, who, apparently, died unmarried. Jonathan," the
third son, born in 1626, was alive in Portsmouth in 1653.
Jacob," the fourth son, born in 1633, was of Portsmouth,
married Joanna Slocum, and had sons, Jacob,' born 1661, and
Samuel," born 1679. Eleazer," the fifth son, was alive in 1661.
Gershom," the youngest, born 1635-40, was of Portsmouth,
and had sons Gershom' and John." Lines of descent from
several of these men of the third generation have been traced.
Their descendants were in Portsmouth, Kingston and New
port, R. I., and others moved westward along the Connecticut
shore, many of them having joined the community of Friends.
Still another family of Mott, apparently not very nearly
related to either of the preceding, was that of Nathaniel,
who was an early settler at Scituate and Braintree, Mass. He
married, 1656, Hannah, the widow of Peter Shooter, and had
sons: John," born 1659; Nathaniel," born 1661; Samuel," born
1668-9; Edward," born 1673, and Ebenezer," born 1675. Of
these John, Nathaniel and Edward settled on Block Island.
John" married Mercy or Maria Tosh, and two daughters were
born to them there, but nothing appears of him on the records
after 1688. Nathaniel" married 1682, Hepzibah Winslow, and
a second wife, 1691-2, Sarah Tosh, by whom he had sons John,"
born 1700; Nathaniel,' born 1706, and Edward,' born 1709-10.
Samuel," was of Lyme, Conn., and had sons: Samuel,' born
1693-4; John,' born 1698; Experience,' born 1703-4, and
Nathaniel,' born 1707. Edward" married 1695, Penelope Tosh,
and died intestate 1737 (either he or his nephew of the same
name was sometime at Westerly, R. I.), leaving no record of
issue. Ebenezer," the youngest son of Nathaniel, married
1700-1, Grace Vinal, had son John,' born 1707, who was the
ancestor of the Motts of Boston. Male descendants of the
Block Island men are still there. The line has been prolific,
and not a few moved to Connecticut and Long Island towns.

While it is not impossible for our James of Hempstead to
have been the son of one of the earlier wanderers from Block
Island, it is more likely than not that his origin must be
sought elsewhere.
Family tradition has its value, of course, but unless sup
ported by records, should not be accepted unconditionally.
It is the common belief among the descendants of the Hemp
stead patriarch that the family is of French Huguenot
extraction, and that the name was originally De Mott or
Le Mott. The De Motts of early New York and vicinity
seem to have been a Dutch family, and certainly there is no
evidence whatever that they were related to the English
Motts of the same period. In a few instances De Motts of
Hempstead and Hudson River towns have dropped the pre
fix, and swelled the number of nomadic Motts that are the
despair of the genealogist. If there is any foundation for the
Huguenot story, the exodus from France must have taken
place before the period of the settlement of this country, for
numerous county histories of England indicate that the name,
spelled just as Adam Mott spelled his, was widely scattered
there. The descendants of James Mott of this History^
almost without exception, vigorously maintain that he was
born in " Long Island," frankly acknowledging their inability
to assign him to any recognized lines of the name. The
single exception as vigorously asserts that he was a resident
of New Rochelle, and either a member or the son of a
member of the Huguenot colony there before his departure
into the Dutchess County hills in 1762. This would seem to
give color to the surmise that he was son of that James of
Mamaroneck who married Jane Burling; and the fact that the
recently erected Huguenot monument in New Rochelle bears
the name of James Mott as a member of that community
gives it additional weight. On the contrary, the Saratoga
descendants, who have preserved the family records, deny
the existence of any tradition in their midst that he ever
lived at New Rochelle, or was identified with Huguenot in
terests or influences there.
The weight of evidence, such as it is, is in favor of the
descent of "James Mott, Jr.," "of Hempstead," from Adam, the
Hempstead patriarch, through his son John," and grandson
James,' as has been outlined in these pages.

I. James' Mott, "born on Long Island," N. Y., Oct., 1723;
married at Huntington, called "Jr., of Hempstead," Feb. 2,
1747-8, Anna Rogers. She was born Jan. 6, 1728, and baptized
at Huntington, Sept. 8, 1728. The family removed from
Long Island to Dutchess County about 1762, settling in the
locality afterwards incorporated as Washington.
James Mott died in Oct., 1770, his widow Anna surviving
and living as late as 1783. No wills are on record, nor deeds
of purchase or sale of any real estate in Long Island or
Dutchess County.

Moreau, Saratoga Co., with two sons in 1825; she subse
quently moved into Pennsylvania, and died March 27, 1842.

4, 1757. He served as private in the Continental forces of the
* John Mott, with his wife Jane, and children Sarah, Samuel, Deborah,
John, Jane, Anna, Permelia and Permanus, were given certificate of re
moval from Nine Partners to Coeymans, 17.5.1804.

Revolution, stationed on the Hudson, in his home county, in
skirmishes with the Tories. Later he was identified with the
Friends in the Nine Partners Meeting, and their records are
authority for his removal to Saratoga County, 14. 9. 1791. He
married Oct. 4, 1781, Rebecca, daughter of Thomas Smith of
Saratoga, who was born July 31, 1764. His farm was in the
township of Half-Moon, and he was a Supervisor of the town
ship in 1801, and continuously through 1817, in 1814 being
the Moderator of the Board. He qualified as executor of the
estates of Johanes Eighme and Thomas Smith in 1801, and of
Joseph Fowler in 1803, the Surrogate Records describing him
as "of those people called Quakers." He represented the
district in the Legislatures of 181 2, 1817 and 1821. He was
instrumental in the organization of the Baptist Church at
Middletown in 1835, and one of its first deacons.
His wife died Nov. 7, 1831, and he Feb. 21, 1842, or, as his
epitaph reads. Feb. 10, aged 84 ys., 5 ms., 16 ds.

time of the removal from Long Island to Dutchess County.
He settled at Dean Corners in Saratoga in the spring of 1783,
and married in the fall of the same year, Oct. 20, 1783, Amy
West, who was born April i, 1767. He was a Justice of the

Peace in 1798, Supervisor in 1801, '2, '3, '4, '18 and '19, and a
member of the Assembly in 1807, 1808 and 181 1. His wife
Amy died March 30, 1811. He died Oct. 30, 1847; a second
wife, Sarah, having died March 28, 1833, in her 67th year. His
will, dated April 13, 1847, was presented for probate Nov. 8,
following, and named granddaughter Amanda Losee, daughter
of Thomas, grandson Jesse, son of Lafayette Mott, grandson
Jesse S., son of Samuel J. Mott. The sum of $800 was left
" for the benefit of my daughter Amy Howland," and grand
daughters Louisa M.and Amy Amanda Howland were residuary
legatees. Samuel J. and Lafayette Mott were the executors.
The heirs cited were Samuel J., Lafayette, John R., and James
Mott of Saratoga, Amy Howland of Northumberland, Amelia
Wellington, wife of Samuel B., of Tioga County, Penn., James
H. Green of Princeton, N. J., and Amanda Losee, a minor, of
Saratoga. The children of Jesse and Amy Mott were:

6. Samuel" Mott {James^), was born in Washington, July 19
1766, the youngest of his father's sons, and after the death of
his oldest brother James there, in 1808, the only male member
of the family to remain in the town. He was a member of
the State Legislature of 1814; is said to have been a school
master, and to have compiled the "Mott Almanac," which
undoubtedly was warrant for the claim that he was an
"astronomer." There is no record of his purchase of any
land, but a letter to a relative in Saratoga, dated March 28,

1811, says: "I have the past summer purchased two small
additions to my farm from Carr Wilber and the Burlingame
place, which renders it much more valuable, and I think that
I am now fixed for life." In late years he was much given to
horseback travelling, and traditions are still extant of his
periodic visits to relatives in Saratoga County and Utica by
this means of conveyance. His wife was Phebe Haight. He
died in Washington not long before 1831, in which year
(Aug. 17) the widow Phebe, Elizabeth, Martha and Edwin
Mott, all of Washington, with Lewis H. Smith and wife,
Phebe Ann, of Macedon, Wayne Co., sold to Joseph Rodgers
for $3,500 the farm, etc., "of which Samuel Mott died siezed,"
in the town of Washington, 147)^ acres, on south side of
the highway, abuttors being Jacob Haight, Thomas Tompkins,
Augustus Davis, Carr Wilbur and the Society of Friends.
There is no will of Samuel Mott on record. The widow sub
sequently removed to Macedon, and died there, April, 1849.

ensign in the 63d Regt. of New York Militia in 181 8, and a

into Penn., and was last of Calhoun Co., Mich. He married
Dec. 25, 1824, Esther Campbell, who died Feb. 23, 1879. He
died Aug. 3, 1868.

12. Samuel Mabbett" Mott {John,' James"), washorn in Wash
ington, Oct. 14, 1786. He lived at Pittsburg, Pa., in Oneida
County, and the last year of his life in Wellsville, Alleghany
Co., N. Y. The Legislature passed an Act April 11, 1833,
directing the State Comptroller to audit the account of Samuel
M. Mott, the Sheriff of Oneida County, for transporting
prisoners from Rome to Poughkeepsie and return. He mar
ried June 10, 1805, Amelia Stuart, who died in Wellsville,
Feb. 9, 1854. He died there July 21, 1863.

ton, N. Y., April 2, 1802. In 1804 the family removed from
Dutchess County to North Bridgewater, Oneida Co., which was
afterwards his home. He married May 3, 1827, Olive Rhodes,
who was born April 22, 1805, and died, his widow, May 3, 1864.
He died at Utica, Sept. 13, i860.

15. James' Mott {Zebulon' James"), was born in Washington,
N. Y., 15. 1 1. 1783. In his boyhood his father settled in Half-
moon, Sartoga Co., and there he resided until his removal
to the Haviland farm in Moreau in 1808. He married 27.4.1805,
Anstis, daughter of Joseph Merritt, and granddaughter of
Ichabod, the first permanent settler in Queensbury. She died
Feb. 24, 1844. James Mott was made a Supervisor in 18 13,
and reelected for the years 1814, '15, '16 and '17. He was
elected Justice of the Peace in 1815, and reappointed in 1820
and '21. He was active in the organization of the Society of
Friends in Moreau, and died there April 12, 1872, closing "a
peaceful, examplary and eventful life."

her husband in the cemetery at Glens Falls. He died there
10.3m. 1882, aged 91 years. His will, signed Jan. 14, 1873, with
six codicils, the last of which was of Sept. 22, 1879, was proved
July 3, 1882, and is on record in Glens Falls.

and was buried with his family in Half Moon. His will of
June II, 1846, is on record in Saratoga County.

19. John Rogers' Mott {Jesse' James"), was born in Saratoga,
N. Y., Oct. 27, 1785. He was Town Clerk of Saratoga in 1810,
and from 1815 to 1818; Justice of the Peace in 1815, and re
appointed in 1818; Sheriff of the County from 1821 to 1825.
He was appointed captain in the First Battery of Saratoga
County 1812, and resigned in 1818, then of the First Regiment
of Artillery. He married (i) Laura Wilcox, who died June 30,
1820, in her 31st year. He married (2) June 30, 1824, Abigail
H. Dillingham, who survived him and was living in 1859. He
died May 14, 1856, and was buried in SchuylerviUe. His will
of Oct. 25, 1848, made Stephen H. Dillingham and Samuel J.
Mott the executors; wife Abby H. to have use of the house,
etc., and to support and educate grandson Andrew H. Mott,
and pay to him on his coming to age $100; to daughter
Eleanor Bassett and her daughter Loiazear, each $50; the
residue to his four children, viz.: Ruth H. Mott, Stephen
H. D. Mott, Thomas D. Mott and Rebecca D. Mott. The
will was presented Oct. 31, 1859, and was proved March 26,
i860. The heirs were the widow, sons Stephen H. D. and
Thomas D., daughters Ruth H., wife of Henry A. Backman,
Eleanor, wife of Frederick A. Bassett, Rebecca D., wife of
John Lewis, grandson Andrew H. Mott (for whom John O.
Mott, Esq., was appointed guardian); Horace Mott, another
heir at law, was of place unknown, and did not appear at
the probate.
The children of John Rogers Mott were:

20. James" Mott {Jesse,' James"), was born at Dean Corners,
Saratoga, N. Y., Nov. 23, 1787. He was a Coroner in 1817,
Justice of the Peace in 1827, and Supervisor in 1833. He
married April 10, 1811, Eleanor Hamblin, b. July 20, 1791,
daughter of Ephraim, of North East, Dutchess County. She
died Jan. 14, 1857. He died Oct. 17, 187 1, and was buried by
the side of his wife in the Mott Cemetery in Saratoga. His
will, made Oct. 9, 1865, was offered for probate Oct. 23, 1871,
and proved Nov. 27, following. It gave to his eldest son his
farm of 150 acres on which the testator resided, for his life,
and then to pass to daughters Cornelia and Laura "reserving
49 rods for a burying ground where it now is."
His children were:

22. Samuel J." Mott {Jesse,' James"), was born at Dean
Corners, Saratoga, N. Y., Jan. 5, 1802. He was Justice of the

Assembly in 1857. He married (i) Sept. 22, 1821, Amelia
Wright, who died June 16, 1845, aged 42 yrs., 9 ms., 24 ds. He
married (2) Phebe, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Hoag,
who died July 13, 1848, aged 42 yrs., 11 ms., 5 ds. He married
(3) Margaret, the widow Bailey, who died Jan. 13, 1874, aged
69. He died Oct. 21, 1864. His will, dated Jan. 18, 1858, was
proved Nov. 3, 1864. It divided his estate into five equal parts
between his wife Margaret and four surviving children, pro
viding that should he survive his wife, one half of the portion
willed to her should pass to her son James B. Bailey. The
widow Margaret's will, dated June 10, 1873, was proved April
27, 1874, and names her sister Martha Denton and her son
James B. Bailey.

Dutchess County, May 2, 1808. Aug. 17, 1831, he joined, with
his mother, then a widow, and his sisters, all of Washington,
in a conveyance of the home farm to Joseph Rodgers. Sept. 6,
1841, he sold to Harvey June of Amenia, certain lands in
Amenia near " the Deep Hollow Creek," which had been his
father's, his wife Eliza joining in the conveyance, both being
then of Macedon, Wayne County, N. Y.
He was a merchant and farmer of Macedon. He married
(i) Sophia  , and (2) Eliza Fosmire. He died in Macedon,
Oct. 2, 1868.
His only issue was a son:

36. John Mabbett* Mott {Joseph' John' James"), was born
April 26, 1807. He married at Paris Hill, Oneida County,
N. Y., June 29, 1828, Betsey Osborn, who was born Aug. 13,
1807. March 14, 1828, he was appointed Paymaster of 6th
Regiment Cavalry, S. N. Y., with rank from Jan. 10, 1828;
Sept. 1, 1829, Quartermaster of 6th Regiment Division Infantry,
S. N. Y., with rank from May 29, 1829. In 1832 he was

appointed Postmaster of Paris, and in 1836 Commissioner of
Deeds for Oneida County. He was also Sheriff of Oneida.
In 1840 he moved to Lansingburgh, and in 1843 was appointed
Postmaster at Germondville. From 1853 to 1858 he was
United States Marshal for the Northern District of New York,
and was afterward State Agent for taking the vote of the
New York soldiers in the field. From 1858 to 186 1 he was in
brush manufacturing business with offices in City of New York.
He died at Washington, D. C, Oct. 9, 1864, and was buried in
Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, N. Y. His widow long survived
him at Lansingburgh, and died March 31, 1894.

b. Oct. 22, 1843, who survived him. He died at Richmond Hill,
March 12, 1907, and was buried in Oswego.

He died June, 1894, leaving a will executed Dec. 8, 1888, and

attorney and District Attorney of Saratoga County, later

Cox, who was born Nov. 8, 1824, and died Nov. 17, 1888. His
second wife, who survived him, was Sarah J. Cox, born Oct. 22,
1830; died Sept. 17, 1906. He died July 2, 1898, and was
buried, as were both wives, in the Bay Street Cemetery at
Glens Falls. His will, made April 7, 1898, was proved July 8,
of the same year. The will of the widow sets forth that "her
maiden name was Sarah J. Cox," and disposes of all her "real
estate in the village of SchuylerviUe," naming among her
legatees her "niece and stepdaughter Alice E. Hazlett," her
"nephew and stepson Edward P. Mott," her "sister-in-law
Anne Mott," her nieces Virginia L. Clendon and Sarah E.
Viele, her nephew Howard C. Pearsall, Edward M. Angell,
Emma O., wife of Charles M. Mott, her "great-nephew Ed
ward P., son of Frederick B. Cox." It was made Sept. 26,
1904, and admittted to probate Nov. 26, 1906, in Warren County,
N. Y., as was that of her husband.

He married Feb. 17, 1845, Laura, daughter of James Mott,
born in Saratoga, July 21, 1822; died there Oct. 6, 1908. He
died in New York, March 8, 1877, leaving a will made the day
before, and proved five days after his death, in which wife
Laura and two daughters are named, the widow, brother-in-
law Stephen Emigh of Waterford, and brother James K. Mott
of New York, executors. The will of Mrs. Laura Mott was
admitted to probate in Saratoga County, Oct. 26, 1908, her
nephew, Mott Emigh of New Rochelle, being the executor; it
disposed of a large estate, chiefly among a large number of
relatives.

was living in 1880.

61. James K.* Mott {Thomas Smith,' Zebulon' James"), was
born in Moreau, Saratoga County, N. Y., March 30, 1829. He
was an importer of woolen cloths, of New York, from 1859
until 1870. He died March 9, 1881; his will of June 8, of
previous year, and proved March 18, after his death, in the
New York County Surrogate's Office, disposes of estate with
out naming wife or child.
62. Zebulon W.* Mott {William' Zebulon' James"), was born
in Moreau, about 1818. He married (as per Saratoga Friends'
Records) 7th of 9th mo., 1842, Naomi W., daughter of Abra
ham and Sarah Leggett of Stillwater. He was of Glens Falls
in 1852, and is named in his father's will of 1873 as a legatee
to the extent of one-fifth of the estate. A gravestone in the
Glens Falls Cemetery is to the memory of Maria W., wife of
Zebulon W. Mott, born Aug. 26, 1820, died Jan. 6, 1853. His
son Frederic L.' died in childhood, and he is said to have had,
besides, Minnie, Mary Louisa, William and Abbott.
63. Samuel Rogers* Mott {John' Zebulon' James"), was
born in Halfmoon, June 29, 1826. He remained a resident of

Saratoga County until 1868, removing later to Bouckville,
N. Y., where he was engaged in the manufacture of cider and
vinegar, with salesrooms in New York City. He married
Dec. 21, 1847, Ann Mary Coon, born at Saratoga Springs,
June 30, 1828, daughter of Jeremiah. In 1907 he was a resi
dent of Bouckville.

64. John Owen* Mott {John,' Zebulon' James"), was born in
Halfmoon, Oct. 16, 1829. He was educated at Ballston College
and began practise as an attorney in Saratoga County, of
which he was elected District Attorney in 1856. At the out
break of the Civil War he received the appointment of Pay
master in the army, and remained in service until peace was
declared, when he resumed oflfice practice in New York, with
residence for a few years in New Jersey. He was made
Assistant U. S. District Attorney in 1890, and in 1895 a City
Magistrate, holding that office until his death. He was twice
married, first to Harriet Lawrence, born Sept. 19, 1826, died
June 10, 1859, buried at Waterford; second to Caroline E.
Morse, who died July 30, 1902. Judge Mott died at Noroton
Heights, Conn., Aug. 11, 1905, and was buried with his wife
Caroline in Albany.

Halfmoon, May 14, 1844. He early settled in Baltimore, Md.,
and has been for many years officially connected with the
U. S. Engineers Office in that city. He married (i) at Water
ford, June 3, 1863, Mary Alida, daughter of John Bonce, born
at Waterford, Feb. 15, 1846; d. at Baltimore, Dec. 30, 1891.
He married (2) at Camden, N. J., Jan. 3, 1893, Clara Virginia,
daughter of George H. Westacott, born at Philadelphia, Aug.
22, 1867. He was of Baltimore in 1908.

sisters, nieces and cousins, and provided for the care of "the
yard in which dear wife is buried."
68. William Henry* Mott {Samuel J.' Jesse' James"), was
born in Saratoga, Oct. 13, 1826. He was in the flour and grain
business in Albany, of the firm Shepher and Mott, for several
years, removed to New York City in 1869, and back to Sara
toga the next year. He died Dec. 12, 187 1, leaving an only
child: i. Amelia,' living in 1879.
69. Jesse Shepard* Mott {Samuel J.,' Jesse,' James"), was
born in Saratoga, Oct. 6, 1839. He has resided for many years
in Saratoga Springs, a civil engineer and surveyor. He mar
ried Jan. 28, 1858, Jane Lasher, b. Oct. 10, 1838, daughter of
Jonas and Elizabeth.

died April 27, 1888, without surviving issue, leaving a will
made Aug. 25, 1885, which gave to her husband "what may
come to me of my father's estate," with all her real and
personal property. The heirs cited " who are all and the only
heirs at law," besides the husband, were James O. Proper,
Jefferson Proper, John H. Proper, Charlotte Foster, Alzina
Phillips, Mary DeForest and Eveline Sawfrank.

17, 1826, daughter of Jabez and Thankful Dewolf of that
place. He died at Oswego, Sept. 16, 1891, his wife surviving
and died there May 8, 1909. April i, 1854, the State Legis
lature passed an Act confirming certain proceedings of the
Common Council of the City of Oswego in relation to building
a pier by Thomas S. Mott and others.

Dec. 10, 1902, Ruth Woolsey, daughter of Edgar Dole and
Isabella (Cole) Johnson. His residence is Oswego, where he
is engaged in the banking business. In 1907 Governor Hughes
of New York appointed him State Superintendent of Banks, a

of its excessive claims upon his health and strength.
He was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention
at Chicago in 1908, and Member of Congress from the 28th
