All rights reserved. PRE FA CE. My original intention was merely to form a Catalogue of the Engraved Portraits and Fancy Subjects painted by Gainsborough and Romney, with sufficient information con cerning the state of each plate to enable a collector to indentify the state of any print. By chance, however, meeting with a process which seemed so thoroughly to reproduce the Engravings, I determined upon illustrating the Catalogue with twenty reproductions of the finest and rarest prints in my collection, best representing the work of the artists — both Painters and Engravers. The following abbreviations are used in the Catalogue, viz : — Mez: for Mezzotint ; Pub. for published ; W. L. for whole length; T.Q.L. for three-quarter length; and H.L. for half-length. The measurements are taken from the edges of the / / subject engraved. HENRY PERCY HORNE March, 1 89 1 .
