INTRODUCTION
M
ODERN society has made new demands upon art and opened a hundred new avenues of usefulness for
those of artistic talent. None of these, however, surpass in influence or importance the great field
of the newspaper illustrator.
Fifteen years ago, newspaper illustration was still a theme for speculation. Five years since it
was battling for its life. Today it has become an essential factor in that cosmopolitan integer which
the world knows as the modern newspaper.

This is especially true of the newspaper cartoon. While half-tone reproductions of photographs
have outstripped it in the amount of space they command, they have not dwarfed its place or lessen-
ed its power.
The cartoon still commands and will always hold the place of honor. The reason is clear; the
half-tone cut may be faithful in its reproduction of men or places of interest, but it is mechanical. The cartoon
is not merely a picture but a commentary. To make it calls for rare talents a keen sense of humor, a proper
appreciation of the progress of events, the ability both to suggest and to portray, as well as an artist's eye and hand.
With the development of newspaper illustration, the cartoon has become a daily necessity instead of an oc-
casional feature. So essential is it regarded that some of the highest salaries paid by American newspapers are
those of the great cartoonists.
The power of the cartoon is immeasurable. It speaks an universal language, more potent and effective often
times than the profound editorial, more graphic and attractive than the best that type can tell. It finds the weak
point in the statesman's armor. It presents public questions with a power that is all its own and preaches morals
that those who run may read and will read.
Nobody who saw Nast's masterpieces against Tweed or in the Greeley campaign will ever forget or cease
to be influenced by them. The work of our present day cartoonists is leaving its impress on thousands where
Nast touched one and exerting an influence that no one can calculate.
It is gratifying to note a growing tendency in the cartoon away from political bitterness and savagry, a
progress toward better nature and a broader charity for those who differ from us. This has been a marked
characteristic of Mr. Westerman's work from the first. His cartoons hold a pleasant humor, a happy fancy, a clever
ridicule that rarely leaves the realm of amiability. In this, has been the secret of much of his success.
Few cartoonist's drawings are more widely sought for reproduction than Mr. Westerman's, and in the two
years since he began this work on the State Journal he has won a reputation little short of national.
It is a personal pleasure to me that I was able to give Mr. Westerman his first opportunity to do newspaper
illustration seven years ago, and in common with his many friends, I am proud of his success. I bespeak for this
volume the cordial welcome I am certain it will receive from the public at large no less than from all who have
had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Westerman as a friend.
