This report, prepared by the Soil Conservation Service, and sub- mitted to the USDA Field Advisory Committee, presents Present Land Use Acreage Tables (base year 1968) by Towns and Counties ; and by the twenty-eight Study Areas of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Four major classes of land use and five subclasses of land use are listed for each town within the Commonwealth. This inventory, by class and subclass, will be used in other phases of the Massachusetts Water Resources Study. Projections of future land uses, to be made by the Economic Research Service, will show the expected future change based on historical trends for each class and subclass of land. The Massachusetts Water Resources Commission can use this report, together with other reports and studies prepared by the U. S. Department of Agriculture and other agencies, in the preparation of a comprehensive plan for the Commonwealth's water and land resources. The information and data contained herein will assist local, state and federal agencies in their specific planning activities. Pasture Land in grass or other long-term forage growth that is being used primarily for grazing., URBAN Residential Land used for urban residential developments, multi- family apartments, and single rural residences (not to exceed ^g acre per dwelling), including driveways, lawns and parking areas o Commercial-Industrial — - Land used for buildings, parking lots, and lawns associated with commercial and industrial enterprises Can be in either a rural or urban setting,, Public -Institutional -- Land used for; transportation (roads, railroads, and airports ); schools, churches, cemeteries, hospitals, government and other public buildings | and other land that is intensively used» Does not include areas of state, municipal, or private parks that are not developed for intensive use. FOREST Tree covered land not intensively developed, which is at least 10$ stocked with forest trees capable of producing wood products, exerting an influence JK- L- I on the water regime, and providing recreation opportunities or fish and wildlife habitat. OTHER All land not otherwise classified. Consists of miscellaneous land uses including; wetlands not included in for:est ; extensively used open land such as golf courses; non-forested parks lands; abandoned agricultural land; open land being held for development; etc. WATER Open water, including rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs. PROCEDURES USED General Land use determinations were made utilizing various sources of data including the U.S. Census of Agriculture, Conservation Needs Inventory (CNl), Regional Planning Commission Reports, the University of Massachusetts Classification of Land Cover Types, etc. Adjustments were made in the data used, where necessary, to update all figures to the base year of 1968. In addition, most land use data had to be reclassified to fit the categories used in this study. Reclassification was accomplished by analyzing available data and making necessary adjustments in the classifications. Time limitations for this study prohibited gathering primary data; therefore, secondary sources were used. The normal discrepancies were noted in the secondary source data and adjustments were made as necessary. Limitations of accuracy of acreages shown are indicated by appropriate rounding of figures in the table „ Data presented herein is not to be regarded as precise or exacts but only as a general relationship of land use within towns. The total area of land and water within each town was taken from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Area Measurement Report, April 1967. Land use data was balanced to agree with these published town areas <. The Regional Planning Commissions, Conservation Districts, local Soil Conservation Service personnel, and others were consulted in making appropriate adjustments of existing data. Four classes of land use with 5> sub-classes, and water are listed in a table, by towns, for each county and each study area. Specific Because of the wide variation in available data, certain adjustments, and reclassifications had to made, generally on a county by county basis. Listed in Appendix A, by counties, is the specific methodology used to develop, the present land use for each county. Primarily a study area was divided along major hydrological boundaries and state lines except in the coastal drainage area. For the coastal drainage area, broad aggregation was made of smaller streams draining into the Atlantic Ocean or Buzzards Bay Area. Cape Cod from the Cape Cod Canal eastward was treated as one Study Area and Dukes and Nantucket Counties as another Study Area. To reflect present land use by each study area, towns were selected and aggregated which would most nearly reflect the present land use for a particular study area. Therefore, a town would be included in only one study area even though parts of the town might be located in two or more study areas. There was no attempt to determine or pro-rate present land use on a smaller area than a town. The following list shows towns selected to represent each study area. Public - Instit utional acreages were determined by reviewing town maps prepared by the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission that have delineated schools, cemeteries, airports, parks, etc. Acreages of roads included in this category were derived based on mileage of state and local roads within each town. Road mileages were taken from the State -Wide Highway Transportation Plan, Average road widths, including road surface and berms used to compute road acreage, were 70 feet for state roads and k$ feet for local roads , These acreages were included in the total for public and institutional uses. For towns not included in the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning District, data was supplied by the local office of the Soil Conservation Service. Agricultural Land acreage was estimated for the entire county from the Conservation Needs Inventory report «, Thia acreage was adjusted by towns based on the proportion of the land classified "AL" in the Classification of Land Cover Types Report, and the amount of agricultural land and open space land from Appendix A of Inventory of Physical Conditions. Urban Land uses were based on measurements taken from the Appendix A of Inventory of Physical Conditions for the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning District. Forest Land was based on the 1966 Conservation Needs Inventory report. The figures are adjusted for each town based on the amount of forest land in the Classification of Land Cover Types for Worcester County. Other Land was determined as the differences between the total acreages of each town and the sum of the computed categories. Water surface acreage and Total acreages for each town were taken from the Area Measurement Report. Water surface acreage in towns with less than 0.1 sq. mi. (6I4 ac.) of water, as listed in the Area Measurement Report, was taken from USGS 7^' Quadrangle Sheets.
