The lack of local materials suitable for road construction in many sections of Illinois makes the knowledge of commercial deposits a matter of special importance to all concerned in highway construc- tion. An effort has been made to compile in readily available form information regarding commercial, deposits of road materials which have been brought to the attention of the Illinois State Highway Department during the past years. While this information is some- what incomplete, it will undoubtedly be of much value to highway officials and contractors in Illinois. INTRODUCTION. Road construction in Illinois is somewhat handicapped by the lack of suitable materials. Gravel pits and stone quarries are scarce in the central, eastern and southern portions of Illinois, and materials used in building hard surfaces on highways have to be shipped in, often from considerable distances. As these materials are very heavy and their transportation is expensive, it is necessary, in order to select properly the type of construction and to make satisfactory estimates, to have knowledge of the deposits of material which are most readily available and at lowest cost. It should be noted in this connection that owing to wide variations in freight rates and to prohibitive switching rates, it is sometimes pos- sible to obtain materials which have to be transported by rail for long distances, cheaper than materials from quarries or pits which are located within a few miles of the work. The necessity of hauling with teams for long distances will also often prohibit the use of certain materials. The following lists of pits, quarries and other sources of road materials contain information regarding commercial deposits of road materials which have been brought to the attention of the Illinois State Highway Department during the past years. Owing to the large increase in highway construction, new deposits of road materials have been frequently opened during the past year, and a number of the pits and quarries have changed ownership repeatedly. For these reasons, the following information is somewhat incomplete and prob- ably contains a few errors. In general, the information given has been obtained from the individual or company owning or operating the materials deposits. A few deposits which are likely to become of commercial value, and some deposits which have been of commercial value in the past, but which for some reason have been closed, are included in this bulle- tin. No attempt has been made, however, to include in these lists information regarding small deposits, and deposits so located that they are only of local value. There is no doubt, however, that many of the rock ledges, gravel beds, and sand banks of which little is known at the present time, contain some materials of satisfactory quality. A number of these deposits, especially those located where suitable mate- rials are scarce, would be of much value if equipped with the necessary facilities for producing materials of the desired sizes and for making shipments by rail. It is essential in order to obtain economical road building, that before plans for highways are to be drawn, an endeavor be made to locate any deposits which may be found in the neighbor- hood. Local authorities may be of much assistance in highway work by securing this information and keeping it on record. A number of counties through their board of supervisors have taken in the past year a step in the right direction in this matter, and have voted a small appropriation to be expended in taking borings from rock ledges, and in sinking caissons in gravel deposits. There is no doubt that where money appropriated for this purpose is expended properly, much valuable information should be obtained. The laboratory of the State Highway Department is not at the present time in a position to make investigations to locate material deposits. As far as possible, however, it will assist public officials in ascertaining the quality of any new road material which has been located. VIII. CLASSIFICATION OF DEPOSITS. The material deposits have been listed under the following classifi- cation : (1) Sand and Gravel; (2) Crushed Stone; (3) Paving Bricks; (4) Portland Cement; (5) Miscellaneous Materials. The materials in each class have been further divided according to their location in Illinois, or in neighboring states. Each deposit has been numbered, and this number is given on the maps showing the approximate location of the deposit, and also with the description of the deposit under each class of material. The pits are. numbered from north to south, first in Illinois, following with the neighboring states. Only those deposits from which road materials have been shipped to Illinois in the past have been listed. The small enclosed maps are intended to show only the approxi- mate location of the deposits. To determine the shipping facilities from or to any given point, reference should be made to some large railroad map. SAND AND GRAVEL PRODUCERS FURNISHING MATERIALS FOR HIGHWAY WORK IN ILLINOIS.
