D. C. FREIGHT CAR PERFORMANCE February 1920 Statistics of freight car performance for the month of February, 1920, herein presented, are based on the reports of the several railways of Class I to the United States Railroad Administration. Railways of Class I are those with annual operating revenues above $1,000,000. This olass of roads operate an ag¬ gregate mileage approximating 90 per oent of the total standard guage steam railway mileage of the United States, and own about 96 per cent of the total number of standard guage railway oars. The operated mileage included in this statement for February is 230,515 miles of line. The detailed statistics appear on the second, third, and fourth pages, with a general summary by regions at the top of the second page. A monthly summary covering the period from January, 1917, to February, 1920, appears at the foot of the fourth page. Net ton-miles inolude both revenue and non-revenue freight throughout. Freight oar-miles inolude all mileage made by rev¬ enue freight cars in freight and mixed trains. Unserviceable freight cars are those in or awaiting shop, including all "bad order" cars. The significant factors for the month of February were as follows: Fer cent of loaded car-miles.71.9 Car-miles per day ....22.3 Tons per loaded car .28.3 Per cent of unserviceable cars .. 6.5 CONSECUTIVE NO. O. C. FREIGHT CAR PERFORMANCE June 1920 Statistics of freight oar performance for the month of June, 1920, herein presented, are compiled from the reports of the several railways of Class I to the Interstate Com¬ merce Commission. Railways of Class I are those with annual operating revenues above $1,000,000, They operate an aggregate mile¬ age approximating 90 per cent of the total standard gauge steam railway mileage of the United States, and own about 96 per cent of all standard gauge railway-owned freight cars. The operations included in this statement for June cover 231,078 miles of line. To accord with the territorial grouping of the Inter¬ state Commerce Commission, the former Central District is now entitled "Great Lakes Region", while the former Ohio- Indiana and Allegheny Districts are now combined into the "Ohio-Indiana-Allegheny Region". Net ton-miles include both revenue and non-revenue freight throughout. Freight car-miles include all mileage made by freight cars in freight, mixed, special, and other trains. Unserviceable freight cars are those in or await¬ ing shop, including all "bad order" cars. The significant factors for the month of June were as follows: Per cent of loaded car-miles....... 69.5 Car-miles per day...... 25.0 Tons per loaded car.... 29.0 Per cent of unserviceable cars..... 7.0 The average daily car-mileage in June was the greatest since the month of October, 1919. Tons per car were the greatest of any month Bince January, 1919. CONSECUTIVE NO. !l O. S. SER. D. C. FREIGHT CAR PERFORMANCE August 1920 The accompanying statistics of freight car performance for the month of August, 1920, are compiled from the reports of railways of Class I to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Railways of Class I are those with annual operating rev¬ enues above $1,000,000, Their operated mileage approximates 90 per cent of the total standard gauge steam railway mileage of the United States, and their owned freight cars 96 per cent of all standard gauge railway-owned freight cars. The opera¬ tions included in this statement for August cover 231,587 miles of line. Net ton-miles include revenue and non-revenue freight throughout. Freight car-miles include all mileage made by freight cars in freight, mixed, special, and other trains. Un¬ serviceable freight cars are those in or awaiting shop, in¬ cluding all "bad order” cars. The significant factors for the month of August all showed improvement over the corresponding factors for July. They were as follows: Per cent of loaded car-miles,..,,., 68.2 Car-miles per day.27,4 Tons per loaded car.. 29.8 Per cent of unserviceable care,,.., 7,1 The daily car-mileage in August was the greatest since the month of May, 1917. Tons per car were the greatest of any month since December, 1918, * CONSECUTIVE NO. 164 O. S. SER. D. C. FREIGHT CAR PERFORMANCE September 1920 The accompanying statistics of freight car performance for the month of September, 1920, are compiled from the reports of railways of Glass I to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Railways of Class I are those with annual operating reven¬ ues above $>1,000,000. Their operated mileage approximates 90 per cent of the total standard guage steam railway mileage of the United States, and their owned freight cars 96 per cent of all standard guage railway-owned freight cars. The oper¬ ations included in this statement for September cover 231,583 . miles of line. Net ton-miles include revenue and non-revenue freight throughout. Freight car-miles include all mileage made by freight cars in freight, mixed, special, and other trains. Unserviceable freight cars are those in or awaiting shop, in¬ cluding all "bad order" cars. The significant factors for the month of September were as follows: Per cent of loaded car-miles. 67.0 Car-miles per day. 28.1 Tons per loaded car. 30.0 Per cent of unserviceable cars. 7.2 The daily car-mileage in September was the greatest since the month of July, 1917. C. FREIGHT CAR PERFORMANCE November 1920 The accompanying statistics of freight car performance for the month of November, 1920, are compiled from the reports of railways of Class I to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Railways of Class I are those with annual operating rev¬ enues above $1,000,000. Their operated mileage approximates 90 per cent of the total standard gauge steam railway mileage of the United States, and their owned freight cars 96 per cent of all standard gauge railway-owned freight cars. The operat¬ ions included in this statement for November cover 251,565 miles of line. Net ton-miles include revenue and non-revenue freight throughout. Freight car-miles include all mileage made by freight cars in freight, mixed, special, and other trains. Un¬ serviceable freight cars are those in or awaiting shop, includ¬ ing all "bad order" cars. The significant factors for the month of November, compared with the same month of the previous year, were as follows: Month of November 1920 1919 Per cent of loaded car-miles. 63.2 71.3 Car-miles per day. 26.8 23.3 Tons per loaded car. 30.5 26.2 Per cent of unserviceable cars. 7.5 6.3 The average car loading for November, expressed in terms of tons per loaded car, was the highest ever recorded for a single month.
