 The Notice for convening the Meeting was read from the 
 London Gazette of Friday, the 23rd October, 1840. 
 
 The Minutes of the Half-yearly General Meeting of the 
 7th May last were read and confirmed. 
 
 The 29th Report of the Directors, and the Statement of 
 Accounts, signed by the Auditors, for the Half-year ending 
 the 30th June, 1840, were read. 
 
 It was moved, seconded, and 
 Resolved unanimously, 
 
 That the Report and Statement of Accounts now read be 
 received, and that the same, together with the Appendix, be 
 printed for the use of the Proprietors.

REPORT. 
 
 It. is with great satisfaction that at this Half- 
 yearly Meeting of the Shareholders, the Directors 
 are able to congratulate them on the question of 
 the Reduction of the onerous Duty under which 
 the interests of the Association suffered so long, 
 being settled, and that instead of 20 per cent, 
 to which it had been previously reduced, the 
 Duty will, from and after the 1st July last, be 
 only 10 per cent. This highly desirable and long 
 sought event has been accomplished by the per¬ 
 severing assiduity and talent of Mr. Duval, the 
 Chief Commissioner, and the Directors cannot 
 but think it was most fortunate that the manage¬ 
 ment of so difficult a negociation fell into the 
 hands of a gentleman who enjoyed so much of 
 the respect, and good opinion, and good feeling

 of the Brazilians, which greatly facilitated the 
 question being brought to a successful termina¬ 
 tion. The announcement of the Decree from the 
 Correio Official will be found in the Appendix,* 
 in the original Portuguese and translation. 
 
 Mr. Duval has not been less actively employed 
 in endeavouring to get the return of the Deposit 
 voted in this Session of the Chambers at Rio. 
 The last accounts from him were of the 29th 
 August; and in a private letter to the Chairman 
 of that date he says—speaking of the difficulties 
 against which he has had to contend in conse¬ 
 quence of the Chamber having classed the claims 
 of the Association with other individual claims, 
 having no reference whatever to the question at 
 issue—that he had made such representations as 
 led him to believe would ensure success ; so that 
 the Directors entertain a sanguine hope, that the 
 Deposit will be returned to the Association before 
 the closing of the Session.

 pitulation of what has taken place at the Mines 
 during the six months preceding the 30th of 
 June, and which they submit to the Shareholders. 
 The absence from Gongo Soco of Mr. Duval in 
 the discharge of his duties at Rio, as referred to 
 in the preceding paragraph, has not enabled him 
 to report from ocular proof, and his Recapitula¬ 
 tion will therefore be confined to few subjects, 
 but it is sufficient to shew the Shareholders that 
 due attention is paid to their interests at the 
 Mines. The Recapitulation is dated the 13th 
 August, and is as follows : 
 
 “ A review of operations and results for the first six 
 months of this year offers so little of novelty or in¬ 
 terest that can be conclusively reported upon, that but 
 for the propriety of not departing from established 
 custom, I might safely omit on this occasion, what 
 must be, under the circumstances I have just referred 
 to, the mere formality of a Six Monthly Recapitulation. 
 I must, however, exempt from the application of the 
 foregoing general observation the Duty Question , which 
 has at length been disposed of agreeably to your just 
 expectations, by a reduction to 10 per cent, from the 
 1st July 1840. My letters of 20th and 30th May gave 
 you an account of the passing of the Question in the 
 Senate, and of the sanction given by the Regent in the 
 name of the Emperor to the vote of the two Chambers,

 whereby it became the law of the land; and I now for¬ 
 ward the official paper containing the Decree No. 128, 
 which orders the execution of that law, and the Depart¬ 
 mental order for the same purpose from the Minister 
 of Finance to the Treasury of Minas Geraes. The 
 translations are enclosed herein. The latter of the two 
 said documents contains a clause against which I have 
 fought hard, with a view to obtain that the reduction 
 apply to the balance of gold in chest on the 1st July, 
 as well as to the gold raised since, upon the principle 
 acted upon in the Custom House of Rio de Janeiro, 
 where no enquiry is made when a duty is paid, as to 
 the time the goods paid upon have been in the country, 
 but in that could not succeed. The attempt to include 
 under the same rate of duty the gold which had 
 accumulated in chest since the last remittance made 
 in March was worth making, and would, if successful, 
 have amply compensated for the detention of the remit¬ 
 tance, amounting to 401 lbs. lOoz. lOdwts. less the 
 Duty of 20 per cent, paid at the Provincial Treasury. 
 Thus has ended this great question, which has for so 
 many years occupied the attention and the efforts of 
 the Association, efforts however, which have only 
 assumed a seriously active, or rather effective shape, 
 since the year 1837. 
 
 cc In regard to the Deposit Question , I can only refer 
 to my late correspondence with you, which describes 
 exactly the position it occupies, and which it owes to 
 its partnership in the same Report with the claim of 
 another party, and a settlement of which, by a con¬ 
 signment of funds for that purpose, is and will be fought

 against and delayed as long as possible, as it has been 
 for more than the last two months, forming, as it has 
 done, a clog upon the despatch of business of this 
 session. I am now endeavouring to get the sum of your 
 Deposit included in the amount which the Government 
 is to ask from the Legislature in the Ways and Means 
 of the Minister of Finance, either as an act of the 
 Minister himself, or by an amendment to be proposed 
 by a Member of the Lower House, this being, I fear, 
 our only chance of payment this year. 
 
 “The Mine during the first six months of 1840 has 
 offered no new feature, beyond the unexpected dis¬ 
 covery on the 7th February of a rich bunch of gold in 
 the middle section of the Mine, not in an arch left from 
 old workings, which would be an ordinary occurrence, 
 but in a branch split off from the regular vein ; with 
 this exception, therefore, that part of my last Recapitula¬ 
 tion to the end of 1839, which applies to the Mine, may 
 be referred to, as applying equally to my retrospect to 
 the middle of 1840, but this exception is of consider¬ 
 able importance beyond the mere amount of produce, 
 forming, as it does, a strong opposing argument in the 
 enquiry as to the expedience of closing operations in 
 any part of the Mine, and adding to that extent, to the 
 perplexity which must attend the consideration of the 
 question, as to the possibility of squaring as far as 
 practicable produce and expenditure by a reduction of 
 the latter, on the failure of increase in the former. 
 The abandonment of operations in one part, or section 
 of the Mine, must however shortly take place, if you 
 do not grant the addition to our force asked for in my

 last Recapitulation, or some addition which may enable 
 us to proceed in a manner somewhat commensurate to 
 the great, and every day growing extent of the field of 
 operations. If we close the Eastern section of the 
 Mine, we close the road to investigation in depth, 
 which in mining is most interesting and important, 
 and abandon the encouraging prospects offered by the 
 appearance of the vein in the 55 fathom level, to which 
 my last Recapitulation refers. If we close the Middle 
 section of the Mine, we greatly impede and embarrass 
 the general working of its whole extent, and we close 
 the best source of supply, as it has long been of late for 
 our stamps, and even for our washing-house. If we 
 close the Western section of the Mine, we close the 
 widest, and from its extent, most encouraging field for 
 operations, which, in the range they may take, may lead 
 to results equal to those of the richest periods of the 
 existence and exertions of the Association. Distant as 
 I am from the seat of active operations, my mind closely 
 engagedin very different pursuits, I will not at present 
 pursue further this enquiry, which I shall anxiously 
 take up and report upon after my return to Gongo, 
 and I will close this brief reference to the Mine 
 by calling your attention to the encouraging circum¬ 
 stance recorded in the Mining Captains’ Report, of the 
 continued favorable appearance of the ground in depth 
 in the east, and of the existence of a branch, or vein, 
 in virgin ground, to the south of Allcock’s shaft, and to 
 the south of, and distinct from, any vein heretofore 
 worked. 
 
 “ For an enumeration of and report upon the surface 
 works, in which 1 include the Reduction Department,

 I refer to documents in this letter, which do not in 
 their present state call for any comment from me, and 
 1 would not offer any in the reduction of the ores until 
 I have made myself practically acquainted with the 
 process and object of the experiments on amalgamation 
 which have been in progress since I left Gongo, and 
 which have hitherto only contributed further to 
 establish the fact of the advantage, in point of profit, 
 of amalgamation over stamping and washing in the 
 batea , without settling which is incontestibly the best 
 mode in the details of practice of applying amalgama¬ 
 tion to the extraction of the gold from the ores. 
 
 “Our Taboleiro Iron Works are now equal to the 
 supply of iron for the Mine. In like manner I limit 
 my notice of the building department to a reference to 
 the Report. 
 
 “ I can also only bring before you without comment 
 Mr. Helmreichen’s Reports and Plans respecting Catta 
 Preta and Antonia Pereira, until I have had an oppor¬ 
 tunity of investigating and understanding them on the 
 spot. 
 
 “ My next Recapitulation will, I hope, be rendered 
 more ample and satisfactory, by being founded upon 
 more interesting materials, and being written on the 
 spot, free from the preoccupation of mind and waste of 
 time occasioned by my present harassing pursuits, and 
 with the advantage of having ocular reference upon 
 which to found a Report of what is seen, and not 
 merely of what is sometimes imperfectly described or 
 understood.”

 The Reports on the Building Department and 
 Surface Work, referred to in the Recapitulation, 
 being matters of detail, it is considered unneces¬ 
 sary to embody it in this Report; nor would it 
 be worth the expense of printing in the Appendix. 
 It will suffice to say, that the Directors have 
 given strict orders that only such expenses shall 
 be incurred as are absolutely necessary, and that 
 Mr. Duval is acting up to those orders. 
 
 From the Report on the Taboleiro Iron Works 
 it appears, that the cost of production of the iron 
 is much about the same as the price paid for it 
 to the natives, but then the quality is far 
 superior, and the advantage obtained of having 
 it made precisely in the shape and of the size 
 required, which is a great convenience, as well 
 as a saving of subsequent labor. The great 
 object, however, of making the Association en¬ 
 tirely independent of the natives is attained, and 
 is particularly valuable in an article so indis¬ 
 pensable as iron. 
 
 The Reports on Amalgamation are still imper-

 feet, and the Directors prefer waiting till Mr. 
 Duval shall have returned to Gongo Soco, and 
 have made his own personal observations upon 
 it. In the meantime it will interest the Share¬ 
 holders to know, that the result of the experi¬ 
 ments hitherto made are very favorable, although 
 they are not sufficiently decisive to enable the 
 Directors to give instructions for the substitution 
 of amalgamation for the usual process of the 
 batea. If any of the Shareholders entertain a 
 wish to peruse the Reports upon this subject, 
 they will be exhibited to them at the Office on 
 application, and the Directors will feel obliged 
 by any suggestions of a scientific kind which 
 may assist in elucidating this interesting question. 
 
 The Directors adverted in their last Report 
 (28th Report, page 20) to the reference which 
 had been made of the Reports of the Mining 
 Captains and Mr. Helmreichen, in respect to an 
 increase of the mining force, to Mr. Michael 
 Williams. In pursuance of the recommendation 
 of that gentleman, the Directors have sent out 
 ten miners by the Magnet Packet, and ten by

 the ship Burgomaster Jansen, but they have 
 considerably reduced the rate of wages, and are 
 effecting the same object in the Brazils with all 
 the miners who re-engage after the expiry of their 
 present agreements. 
 
 The quantity of gold raised at the Mine from 
 1st January to 30th June, 1840, both inclusive, 
 has been 749lbs. Gdwts., which exhibits an excess 
 of 1841bs. 5oz. 18dwts. 3grs. above the produce 
 of the preceding half-year. 
 
 The Establishment at Gongo Soco, on the 
 30th June, consisted of 127 Europeans, 194 Na¬ 
 tive Laborers, 20 hired Blacks, 169 Negroes, 
 114 Negresses, 67 Negro Boys, 63 Negro Girls— 
 in all 754; and it is with pleasure the Directors 
 can say, that both in respect to good order and 
 health the reports are most satisfactory. 
 
 Mr. Duval has transmitted to the Directors 
 Reports on Catta Preta and Antonio Pereira, but 
 they are not such as would induce the Directors 
 under present circumstances to undertake any

 fresh outlay of money, or to commence working 
 upon them. 
 
 The Directors have now to call the attention 
 of the Shareholders to the Financial Statement.* 
 
 The Balance of the Financial Account is 
 £6399 4s. lid. applicable to the requirements 
 of the Association for the current half-year. 
 
 The produce of the mines would have been 
 sufficient to authorize a Dividend under ordinary 
 circumstances, but looking to the heavy liabilities 
 of the Association, and to the small produce of 
 the mine since June (it being' only 61 lbs. 5oz. 
 5dwts. 12grs. up to the Sth August, when the 
 last accounts were dispatched) .the Directors 
 have not thought it right to colour their Report 
 with the false glare of a Dividend, when by 
 possibility it might again be required of the 
 Shareholders in the shape of a Call. 
 
 The Accounts shew a diminution of nearly 
 £1600 in the expenditure of the half-year in 
 
 comparison with the preceding one.

The Directors conclude this Report with the 
 expression of their thanks for the confidence 
 which the Shareholders have given them, and 
 with their renewed assurance that every thing 
 which can in the minutest degree affect the in¬ 
 terest of the Association will meet, as it has 
 hitherto invariably met, their most earnest and 
 anxious consideration. And they further trust, 
 that though the concession of the reduction of 
 the Duty has been so long protracted, its ulti¬ 
 mate attainment will convince the Shareholders 
 that their best endeavours have been unremit¬ 
 tingly directed to that important object.

 Decree No. 128 of 23rd June, 1840, reducing to 10 per 
 cent, the Duty paid by the Imperial Brazilian 
 Mining Association of Gongo Soco. 
 
 The Regent, in the name of the Emperor, D. Pedro the 
 
 2nd, has sanctioned, and orders the execution of the following 
 
 Resolution of the General Legislative Assembly. 
 
 Art. 1. The Duty of 20 per cent., which, by virtue of the 
 Resolution of 6th October, 1837, is actually 
 paid by the Imperial Brazilian Mining Associ¬ 
 ation of Gongo Soco, is reduced to 10 per cent, 
 from the financial year 1840 to 1841 forward. 
 
 Art. 2, All regulations to the contrary are repealed.

 “ Gentlemen, 
 
 “ My last letter communicated the splendid bunch 
 of gold which was found on the preceding day at the 
 34 fathom, Curtis's, and was disposed of on that day at 
 the washing-house. Your oldest Captains say, that this 
 is perhaps the richest bunch ever discovered in Gongo, 
 and which has given the greatest quantity of gold in a 
 given time, as it occupied only three hours to break the 
 stuff which filled the three boxes sent up to the washing- 
 house in that short space of time, and which produced 
 105 lbs. of gold. The bunch has disappeared as speedily 
 as it had made its appearance, and the ground is now 
 poor, though it may be expected to yield good stuff for 
 some days for Goldsmid's Stamps. The knowledge of 
 the immediate presence of this rich bunch is probably 
 due to the practised eye of one of your junior Captains 
 (Blarney) and might perchance otherwise have been 
 overlooked."

 Gongo Soco, 10th March, 1810. 
 
 <c I have little to call your attention to by this opportunity. 
 My letter to the Chairman of the 5th instant explained 
 the cause of the delay in the departure from Gongo of 
 the large balance in chest. My own departure will be 
 almost simultaneous with that of the gold troops as the 
 Chambers are convoked this year a month earlier than 
 usual, for the purpose of discussing and settling the 
 budget which was not provided for in the last Session, 
 and in which the question of the repaiunent of your 
 Deposit is included. My early presence this year is 
 also required in the Duty question, the discussion and 
 passing of which in the Senate is amongst the first 
 questions on the list of arrears from last year, which 
 arrears will he the only subjects to occupy the time and 
 attention of the Senate, until the budget is sent to that 
 House from the Chamber of Deputies.

 *•' I have not to record any new feature in tlie present 
 produce and immediate orospects of the mine, beyond 
 the falling off from the 34, Curtis’s shaft, in the daily 
 return, both from under-ground and the Stamps, which 
 is the natural and usual consequence of a great yielding 
 effort from any particular spot. The western ground 
 continues to wear a favorable appearance as we pro¬ 
 ceed, but does not at present send any boxes to the 
 washing-house, nor, as a matter of course, supply the 
 Stamps fed from that district with rich ore. In allud¬ 
 ing to the rich bunch of 7th and 8th February in a 
 previous letter, I omitted to add, that two men only 
 broke in three hours the jacotinga which filled the 
 three boxes sent to the washing-house, from which 105 
 lbs. of gold were obtained.”

 Gongo Soco, 20th March, 1840. 
 
 u The Gold Report gives an unfavorable account of 
 the present yielding condition of the mine, and the 
 Mining Captains’ Report herewith does not hold out 
 any prospect of immediate improvement in any part of 
 the mine. Past experience has, however, sufficiently 
 shewn, how little reliance can be placed upon any con¬ 
 jecture formed from the appearance of the moment, to 
 guard against deductions of a favorable, or an unfavor * 
 able nature, which might otherwise be created thereby. 
 
 44 1 have completed the purchase for Rs. 1800,000, 
 and taken legal possession of the estate of Santa Cruz, 
 which I have reported to you the expediency of obtain¬ 
 ing, at the time I made the acquisition of Campbell, 
 Capim Gordura, and Socorro. The expediency of this 
 purchase consists in the position of that estate with 
 reference to Campbell, which will allow you to bring 
 to Gongo the timber felled at Campbell by the line of 
 road colored green, which passes through Santa Cruz 
 and Capim Gordura, instead of taking, as we otherwise 
 must, the circuitous road marked red, which passes 
 from Campbell through Socorro. The difference 
 between the two lines of road is, with the hills and 
 windings, about one league, the saving of which will 
 soon make up the small sum expended in the purchase 
 of the estate of Santa Cruz, by the saving it will effect 
 in the time and labor of the exertions of the men and 
 cattle employed in the conveyance of the timber, with¬ 
 out taking into account the intrinsic value of the estate 
 itself, derived from its pastures, and some small portion 
 of mining timber which it contains. It has also another

 value* which might be turned to account in the capability 
 of its soil for the production of vegetables and fruit, 
 equal to the supply of Gongo, which it afforded under 
 one of its late owners.”

 “ I beg to annex a translation of the Report of the 
 Committees of the Chamber of Deputies on the 4th 
 October 1839 on the subject of your Deposit. In as 
 far as I can form an opinion at present, I am inclined 
 to think that our claims will not be discussed and 
 settled as part of the Budget of last year, but as ques¬ 
 tions separate therefrom. I shall however endeavour 
 to have them disposed of during the extraordinary 
 Session. 
 
 “ I have this day received accounts from Gongo to the 
 4th inst. every thing was proceeding quietly. The 
 Mine and the Stamps had yielded together from the 
 30th March to the 3rd April inclusively 291bs. 6oz. 
 17 dwts. 6grs. 
 
 “ The produce from the Mine appears to have been 
 obtained from the neighbourhood of Lyon’s and Curtis’s 
 shafts.”

 [Translation of Committees’ Report 
 dated 4th October, 1839.] 
 
 “ The Committees have found, that the Imperial Brazilian Mining 
 Association, in conformity with the condition imposed upon 
 Associations of a similar nature, not to begin operations without 
 having deposited 100 Contos of Reis in the public coffers, 
 as security for the payment of future duties, did deposit the 
 aforesaid sum in silver. But the Decree of 10th May, 1827, having 
 generally abolished that condition, clearly included the Associa¬ 
 tion in question, and consequently the Government ordered on 
 the 17th July of this year the repayment of the said Deposit.

 “ The Committees consider, that as all the other Companies 
 and Associations have received back the Deposits they had made, 
 and as such Deposits do not offer any greater security to the 
 Public Treasury, it is expedient to agree to the repayment also 
 of the Deposit in question, or it would otherwise be necessary to 
 require that all the other Companies should again make such 
 Deposits. 
 
 ci The Government must therefore be empowered to reimburse 
 the sum in question in silver at the exchange of the day. 
 
 “ The Committees accordingly offer the following Resolution:— 
 
 Art. 2. The Government is further authorised to pay to the 
 Imperial Brazilian Mining Association a sum cor¬ 
 responding to 100 Contos of Reis in silver, at the

 “ My accounts from Gongo reach to the 24th ult. 
 The establishment up to that period continued in peace 
 and harmony, and the produce of the Mine continued to 
 be satisfactory. 
 
 “ The extraordinary Session of the Assembly closed its 
 labors yesterday, and the ordinary Session was opened 
 immediately after. As the two questions in which the 
 Association is interested are at the same moment before 
 the two Houses, one in each, and may both come on for 
 discussion at an early period of the session, all my 
 moments are occupied, and will continue to be so, until 
 I have completed the first necessary duty at the com¬ 
 mencement of the campaign $ I hope, however, to be 
 able to address you at some length by the packet which 
 will sail in a few days.” 
 
 Rio de Janeiro, 20th May, 1840. 
 
 “ My last respects bore the date of the 4th inst.; since 
 then no opportunity for addressing you has occurred, 
 and my time has been exclusively taken up in following 
 simultaneously before the two Houses of the Legislature 
 your Duty and Deposit questions, the former has been 
 favorably disposed of in the Senate, by a confirmation 
 of the vote of the Chamber of Deputies, which reduced 
 to ten per cent, the duty payable by the Imperial 
 Brazilian Mining Association from the 1st July, 1840.

 The 1st and 2nd discussion of this question in the 
 Senate took place on the 13th May, when an amend¬ 
 ment was proposed and discussed reducing the Duty to 
 15 per cent., but the original Resolution was carried by 
 a large majority of twenty-five against four: the 3rd 
 reading took place on the 15th inst.—the original 
 Resolution was carried without discussion. I went 
 twice yesterday to the Regent, to obtain his sanction 
 to the Resolution at an early period, but I did not 
 see him; and unfortunately on my return from my 
 second call from him, I was thrown from the chaise, 
 which passed over me, without however doing any 
 further injury than a few bruises, which will, I hope, 
 not detain me to the house beyond two or three days, 
 and will enable me to apply my undivided attention to 
 your Deposit question, which is on the President’s 
 table in the Chamber of Deputies, and on the order of 
 the day, ready to be discussed and disposed of on the 
 first favorable opportunity that offers in the midst of 
 the great party ferment now existing, and which has 
 been produced by the motion made in the Senate on 
 the I3th, that the Emperor be declared of age, and 
 assume the reins of government, assisted by a Conseil 
 d’Etat. I am therefore not without hopes that the re¬ 
 payment of your Deposit will, before the end of this 
 month, be voted in the lower House, and sent up to the 
 Senate, where I shall follow it, without relaxing to, I 
 trust, a favorable conclusion.”

 ec I yesterday received accounts from Gongo to the 
 19th instant, and I inclose the gold returns to the 18th 
 instant, and Mining Captains’ Report to the same date, 
 with the original of their Report for the month of 
 April and to the 8th of May. These contain all the 
 information I can supply by this opportunity as to the 
 state of the mine.”

 enabled to refer you to the communication made 
 by the Minister of Finance to the Senate, and by the 
 Senate to the Chamber of Deputies, that the Regent, 
 in the name of the Emperor, has sanctioned the reduc¬ 
 tion of your Duty from 20 to 10 per cent., which is 
 therefore thus now made the law of the land ; and I 
 trust it will be considered, that the promptness with 
 which matters have been got through this year, has 
 made ample amends for any delay or slowness of action 
 which may have been erroneously considered to have 
 existed last year.”

 “ The perusal of the Mining Captains’ Reports and 
 gold returns suggest but few observations to which I 
 could call your attention, as they do not record any

 occurrence beyond the usual routine and regular daily 
 march of affairs. The gold return presents the novel 
 feature of days apparently without produce, but, in 
 reality, only without any entry of produce on those 
 days when produce is obtained from the stamps only; 
 a circumstance arising from our system of amalgama¬ 
 tion now established on trial, and which will continue 
 to exist as long as that system is persevered in, and 
 will ultimately settle as a permanent proceeding in our 
 operations, if the advantage the trial of amalgamation 
 may shew is sufficient, as I expect it will prove to be, 
 to induce us to cause this process to supersede the 
 mode of reduction of the ores hitherto applied. I have 
 a requisition for 1000lbs. of quicksilver, which I have 
 not transmitted to you until I am able to report as to 
 the probability of our system of amalgamation being 
 definitively adopted, and I have in the mean time 
 borrowed from Catta Branca as much as will supply 
 our immediate wants; perhaps I may be able, after¬ 
 wards, to purchase quicksilver in Rio. 
 
 ce The question of the return of your Deposit has 
 been on the Order of the Day in the Chamber of 
 Deputies for the last month, and the discussion of it 
 has been hitherto postponed by the press of urgent 
 public business : I have reason to expect a commanding 
 majority in the lower House. The Senate is less 
 favorably disposed upon that question, but the good feel¬ 
 ing, my long and friendly intercourse with most of the 
 Members of that House, as well as of the Chamber of 
 Deputies, which has at length carried your Duty ques-

 tion by so large a majority, will enable me, in the 
 Deposit question also to remove prepossession and 
 establish the claim of justice and equity.”

 u The discussion of your Deposit question in the 
 lower House came on in my presence this day, but 
 was adjourned by the arrival of the Minister of Marine, 
 who attended to discuss the Navy Estimates.” 
 
 Rio de Janeiro, 29th June, 1840. 
 
 “ My letters to the Chairman of 10th February, 5th 
 March, and 30th May, have placed before you my 
 reasons for again coming down to Rio this year, and 
 completing in person the carrying of your two ques¬ 
 tions before the Legislature. The most important is 
 now disposed of ; and the other will, in like manner, be 
 satisfactorily settled within two or three weeks.”

 “ I have already brought before you one of the reasons 
 for the delay in the departure of the gold dust from 
 Gongo ; another, a reason of constant existence, being

 “ A large balance of gold dust is now in chest at 
 Gongo waiting my order for remittance to Rio, which 
 I cannot give until I have the official order from the 
 Treasury regarding the new rate of duty.” 
 
 Rio de Janeiro, 29tli July, 1840. 
 
 “ The Captains’ quarterly Report herewith explains 
 the locality whence produce has been obtained, and the 
 appearances of the ground worked through during the 
 last three months, and could not be elucidated"by any 
 thing I could say on this subject. I had directed them 
 to be very explicit in regard to the vein in the 55 fathom 
 level, and I hope their statement in that respect will be 
 sufficient to place the subject in a clear light before 
 you. We are now beginning to experience consider¬ 
 able inconvenience in the workings at the east end of 
 the mine, which are every day becoming deeper under 
 the level of the drain adit (48 fathom) and consequently 
 every day more troublesome and expensive by the in¬ 
 crease of the pumping force and exertions required. 
 The middle ground has continued during this quarter 
 to be our paymaster, the east having continued poor as 
 before, and the western ground not having realized in 
 the parts worked the hopes which had been formed of 
 it, and which must still be entertained, and will no 
 doubt be realized in the sequel of our progress through

 that extensive field which the continuation of the body 
 of jacotinga existing in Gongo may be traced through, 
 and even beyond Socorro, into the estate of Capim 
 Gordura, also your property. 
 
 “ The district of your mine called Cumba continues, 
 like your western ground, to give hopes of produce, 
 founded on legitimate deductions from its apparent con¬ 
 dition. You will observe with pleasure from the Cap¬ 
 tains’ quarterly Report, that we can and do manufacture 
 at Taboleiro iron enough for the consumption of the 
 mining works. 
 
 “ The Report of the Committee which includes the 
 question of your Deposit, after being on the order of 
 the day for a month, and postponed from day to day by 
 urgent state matters, came on to day to the vote, in 
 regard to the amendment of adjournment which had 
 been made. The adjournment applied however only to 
 item No. 1 of the Report, in which you have no interest 
 whatever ; your claim being item No. 2 would not have 
 been affected by the motion which remains to be decided 
 to-morrow.”

 “By the present conveyance, the Sparrow-hawk, I 
 am obliged to limit my communication to the transmit¬ 
 tal of the documents in this letter, and to the advices 
 of drafts or payments, as every hour, and even every

 these, the last moments of this Session, the question of 
 the return of your Deposit. 
 
 “ The gold troop arrived here yesterday in charge of 
 Mr. Fitzpatrick and Captain Bray, and escorted by 
 seven miners, and Messrs. Naylor have taken charge of 
 321 lbs. 6oz. which it brought down, and which they do 
 not ship by this opportunity, as they state it to be con¬ 
 trary to your orders to pay more than 1 per cent, freight, 
 and the ships of war require 1| per cent.”

 Gongo Mine, March 1st, 1840. 
 
 u We beg to hand you a statement of the work performed 
 in this mine during the past month, with an account of pro¬ 
 ductive workings, &c. 
 
 “ The backs from whence the greatest part of our gold 
 produce has been obtained are those over the 34 fathom 
 level at Curtis’s shaft: the jacotinga from these backs has 
 also been very rich at the stamps. Goldsmid’s set being 
 chiefly supplied from these workings, has produced, during 
 last month, about 591bs. of gold. We have obtained a little 
 gold from the back of the 55 fathom level, west of Vesey’s 
 shaft, and a little from the vein over and under the shallow 
 level at Bray’s shaft, and a little from an arch in the old 
 workings over the 14 fathom level at Hocheder’s shaft.

 “ The shallow level, west of Bray’s shaft, has been driven 
 Si fathoms, and the tram level, west of the same shaft, has 
 been driven seven fathoms. These ends have been poor, 
 but the stuff therefrom produces a little gold at the stamps.

 “ The 21 fathom level, west of Duval’s shaft, has been 
 driven h\ fathoms. Here nothing worthy of notice has been 
 met with. 
 
 “ The 21 cross-cut at Allcock’s shaft has been driven 
 south fifteen fathoms, five feet. In this cross-cut several 
 veins have been intersected, but they are poor. 
 
 “ The 21 side level has been driven west, at John’s shaft, 
 eleven fathoms, one foot, and holed to the old level, as was 
 intended, to keep open a communication between the eastern 
 and western parts of the mine. 
 
 “ The crosscut, south of Bray’s shaft, in the 14 fathom 
 level, has been driven five fathoms, one foot, and holed to 
 the Cumba—14 fathom level. 
 
 “ The 55 fathom level, west of Bayly’s shaft, has been 
 driven five fathoms, five feet. Here nothing worthy of notice 
 has been discovered. 
 
 ce Vesey's shaft has been sunk two fathoms. Here the 
 ground is at present very soft. 
 
 “ In addition to the above-mentioned places, the vein 
 over the 41 fathom level, west of Bayly’s shaft, and the vein 
 over the 14 fathom level at Morgan’s, and the Cumba vein 
 over the 14 fathom level, west of Collins’s shaft, have been 
 pretty regularly worked during the month, and the stuff 
 therefrom appropriated to the stamps, where it produces a 
 little gold.

 “ In furnishing our recapitulation of the mining opera¬ 
 tions for the quarter ending 31st ult. we beg to inform you.

 that the most productive workings for both the washing- 
 house and stamps are those over the 34 fathom level, at 
 Curtis’s shaft. You are already aware, that whilst clearing 
 out the stuff from the old workings in this place for the 
 stamps, we met with some branches in the north wall thereof, 
 which proved to be very rich. These workings (though not 
 equally rich as in the month of February, and some previous 
 months,) continue to produce occasional boxes for the washing- 
 house, and the jacotinga is still pretty rich for the stamps. 
 
 66 The backs over the 55 fathom level, west of Vesey’s 
 shaft, have produced a little gold, and those over and under 
 the shallow level at Bray’s. We have also obtained a little 
 gold from an arch in the old workings, over the 14 fathom 
 level at Hocheder’s shaft: it will be understood, that the 
 remainder of jacotinga broke in the above mentioned places 
 has been appropriated to the stamps • we have also obtained 
 some jacotinga for the stamps over the 41 fathom level, west 
 of Bayly’s shaft, and over the 14 fathom leevl at Morgan’s 
 and Collins’s shafts, but these workings are very poor. 
 
 6f Vesey’s sump shaft has been sunk five fathoms, four feet; 
 here the ground is at present favorable for working, being 
 composed chiefly of iron, slate, sand, stone, &c.; we have 
 now about \\ fathoms more to sink for the new level, (say 
 62 fathom level.) 
 
 “ The 55 fathom level, west of Bayly’s shaft, has been 
 driven twenty-one fathoms in the south part of the jacotinga; 
 here the veins have been very poor and irregular, and in 
 order to search for some one which might prove more pro-

 diretive, we have driven during the last month towards the 
 south west, but without discovering any good vein. 
 
 A side level has been driven west of John’s shaft, twenty- 
 two fathoms at the horizon of the 21 fathom level, and com¬

 “ At Duval’s shaft, 21 fathom level, we have driven west 
 sixteen fathoms on the south limb of the vein ; it has been 
 very poor. 
 
 “ The 14 fathom level, west of Bray’s shaft, has been 
 driven six fathoms, and the shallow level west nineteen 
 fathoms. A rise has been opened between these two levels. 
 The tram level has been driven west of the last mentioned 
 shaft 15f fathoms; these places have been very poor. 
 
 “A cross-cut has been completed between Bray’s and 
 Blarney’s shafts at the 14 horizon. Blarney’s new shaft has 
 been opened from this horizon (14) to the surface at the 
 Cumba, instead of Blarney’s old shaft, which had fallen

 66 A new shaft, called 66 Pengilly’s shaft,” about sixty 
 fathoms west of Bray’s, has been commenced, and sunk 
 fifteen fathoms, two feet; it is of course understood that this 
 is to facilitate the works in the western part of the mine. 
 
 A cross- cut has been driven south in the 21 fathom 
 level, at Allcock’s shaft, forty fathoms, in order to make 
 trial of the jacotinga in that quarter. Several veins have been 
 intersected, some of which shew a little gold.

 the 26th ult. in order to apply the wheel to turn a plunger-

 veins in the three western levels above mentioned have been

 inches, and is completed sufficiently deep for a new level, to be 
 called the 62 fathom level, where we have commenced to open 
 a plat, preparatory to the driving a short cross-cut south, to 
 cut the vein in order to drive on its course towards the west, 
 to prove and open the ground for backs, &c. &c. Several 
 levels, shafts, &c. &c. have, of course, during the month, 
 undergone repairs. 
 
 Propositions for the present month. 
 
 “ The plat at Vesey’s shaft, 62 fathom level, to be finished, 
 and a cross-cut south of the shaft to be commenced at the 
 same horizon. The 21 cross-cut at Allcock’s shaft to be

 level at Morgan’s has been driven east of the cross-cut six 
 fathoms, one foot: these places have been very poor. 
 
 “ At Pengilly’s shaft we have driven a cross-cut north 
 10f fathoms in order to make trial of the jacotinga in that 
 quarter : it has hitherto proved poor. The cross-cut south 
 of Allcock’s shaft, in the 21 fathom level, has been driven 
 five fathoms, four feet; it continues poor : here the ground has 
 of late become more soft and wet than formerly, and from its 
 appearance we have reason to think that we have not much 
 farther to drive in order to intersect the whole body of 
 jacotinga. 
 
 cc At Vesey’s shaft we have finished the plat at the 62 
 fathom level, and have driven a cross-cut south from thence 
 two fathoms, one foot: here the ground is pretty favorable for 
 working, but it is very much flooded; so much so, as to 
 require the whole power of the Louisa wheel to draw the 
 water from thence, on which account the Joinville Stamps 
 are at present idle : they having been previously worked 
 by the said wheel, but latterly only 6 heads instead of 18 
 as formerly, on account of the gradual increase of water in 
 the sump above-mentioned.

 “ The vein in the back of the 55 fathom level, west of 
 Vesey’s shaft, has also produced a little gold for the washing- 
 house, and the jacotinga therefrom has also yielded a little 
 gold at the stamps: it will be understood that this vein is 
 the same which produced some pounds of gold in the month 
 of December, 1839, at the horizon of the 55 fathom level. 
 In order to be as explicit as possible, in compliance with 
 your order, we beg to state, that a portion of this vein is 
 wrought out from the 55 to the 48 fathom level; it has 
 occasionally produced boxes of ore as previously explained, 
 and, although we cannot say how this vein may prove under 
 the 55 fathom level, (not being able as yet to drain it, which 
 must be done by the 62 fathom level, just about to start west 
 from Vesey’s shaft, which will require a few months to 
 accomplish, having twenty-six or twenty-seven fathoms to 
 drive before we can begin to work out the ground in question) 
 yet we have reason to expect that some gold exists there, 
 but it is impossible for us at present to state to what extent. 
 
 “ In addition to the above, the under-mentioned places 
 have been worked, and the stuff appropriated to the stamps, 
 viz.—the backs over the 41 fathom level, east of Curtis’s 
 shaft, (south vein)—the backs over the 14 fathom and 
 shallow levels between Morgan’s and Bray’s shafts—the 
 back of the 14 fathom level at Collins’s shaft—and the back 
 of the shallow level at Blarney’s shaft. Several tons of

 jacotinga have also been cleared from the old workings over 
 the 7 fathom level at Hocheder’s shaft. The stuff from 
 these places produces a little gold. 
 
 c( The 21 fathom level, east of Duval’s shaft, has been 
 driven, during the quarter, sixteen fathoms on the south 
 limb of the vein, and the same level has been driven, west of 
 the shaft, seventeen fathoms, two feet, and holed to Morgan’s 
 cross-cut. 
 
 “ The 14 fathom level, west of Bray’s shaft, has been 
 driven 11| fathoms, and a rise from this has been opened to 
 the shallow level. The shallow level, west of the same shaft, 
 has been driven four fathoms, which brought it as far west 
 as Pengilly’s shaft, to which it is communicated by a cross¬ 
 cut being driven four fathoms, two feet, between the level 
 and shaft; which shaft has been sunk four fathoms, two feet, 
 and completed to the said level: this level (shallow) is also 
 extended seventeen fathoms west of Pengilly’s shaft. A rise 
 has also been opened from the shallow to the tram level, west 
 of Bray’s shaft, and the last-mentioned level has been driven 
 four fathoms, four feet. Here the ground has been poor. 
 
 “ A cross-cut has been driven north of Pengilly’s shaft, 
 at the horizon of the shallow level, 23| fathoms, in order to 
 prove if any veins may be met with in that quarter which 
 may be worthy of trial. The jacotinga here has hitherto 
 proved poor. 
 
 “ With regard to 4 the appearance of the ground in our 
 progress westward,’ we are sorry to say, that it is at present 
 gloomy—the vein has been for several fathoms very poor.

 The westernmost point of our present works is extended 
 seventeen fathoms west of Pengilly’s shaft. The distance 
 from this point of our operations to the western boundary of 
 Socorro is about four hundred fathoms, and although the 
 veins in this quarter (our present western works) are poor, 
 yet they are to be seen, and are a continuation of those 
 worked on in the middle part of the mine. With regard to 
 their being traced beyond the limits of the Gongo Mine and 
 Socorro, we can only say at present, that the body of 
 jacotinga can be traced westward at the surface, even through 
 the Socorro property, into that of Capim Gordura; and, 
 although it is impossible to trace the veins by any other 
 means than those of mining operations, of which a great deal 
 remains to be done to explore the western ground in question, 
 yet, there is no reason to doubt their continuation varying 
 in richness, &c. throughout the body of jacotinga. It will 
 be understood, that we are now speaking of the Gcngo veins, 
 and, that the Cumba veins are totally distinct therefrom, 
 being embodied in the south part of the jacotinga. 
 
 “ The 21 cross-cut at Allcock’s shaft has been driven 
 south fourteen fathoms, two feet: this cross-cut is now ex¬ 
 tended fifty-one fathoms in jacotinga, and its end being now in 
 the soft channel of ground which lies on the south part of 
 the jacotinga, is stopped. Several veins have been inter¬ 
 sected in the said cross-cut—(some of them no doubt belong 
 to the Cumba:) we have commenced to drive west, and 
 have driven five fathoms on one of them, which shews a little 
 gold. It is our intention to break a large heap of jacotinga 
 on the course of the said vein, and stamp it, in order to 
 ascertain its value, when we shall, of course, report thereon 
 accordingly.

 6£ It is obvious that this cross-cut was driven for the sale 
 purpose of intersecting that part of the jacotinga, in order 
 to ascertain if any vein or veins might be met with worthy 
 of trial; and, having met with some, (as above stated) it is 
 our opinion that several of them should hereafter be explored 
 as circumstances may admit. 
 
 “ The shallow level at Cumba has been driven nine 
 fathoms west: the end of this level is now extended nineteen 
 fathoms west of Blarney’s shaft; it, (the level) and the backs 
 over it, have, during the last month, produced some good 
 stuff for the stamps. VVe commenced to drive west of the 
 last-mentioned shaft, in the 14 fathom level, but are unable 
 to proceed on account of the very soft and wet nature of the 
 ground; we have, therefore, closed the end, and have com¬ 
 menced a cross-cut towards the south from the said shaft, 
 in order to drive, if possible, in firmer ground. 
 
 “ The 55 fathom level at Bayly’s shaft has been driven 
 towards the west 5| fathoms in the south jacotinga : this has 
 proved poor, and it is for the present suspended. We have 
 commenced to drive west of Bayly’s cross-cut, on the north 
 part of the jacotinga, in the 55 fathom level, and have driven 
 4| fathoms. The vein here is poor, but produces a little 
 gold at the stamps. 
 
 46 Vesey’s shaft has been completed to the 62 fathom level, 
 and a cross-cut driven from the said shaft at this horizon 
 eight fathoms south. In this cross-cut we have inter¬ 
 sected a small limb of jacotinga, in which are some small 
 auriferous veins: we have discontinued driving the cross-cut, 
 and are about to drive frest on the course of the jacotinga to 
 prove it.

 “ The monthly consumption of iron for the Gongo Mine 
 is calculated to amount to 60 arrobas, if there are no 
 extraordinary works in hand. 121 arrobas , 15 lbs. of iron 
 were delivered at the Mine from Taboleiro last May and 
 June, which proves that the foundry at Taboleiro is able to 
 supply the ordinary consumption of that article in the Gongo 
 Mine. In the period above-mentioned, great obstructions 
 in the manufacture of iron were caused by the great number 
 of Brazilian holidays, (six occurring in June) by making two 
 new furnaces, and by frequent want of charcoal. An agree¬ 
 ment in writing was made a short time ago with Joze Carlos 
 for bringing in every day forty alqueires of charcoal: time 
 will shew whether he will fulfil his promise or not. In case 
 he should not be able to supply us with the quantity con¬ 
 tracted for, we propose to make up the compliment by burning 
 charcoal by our own laborers, which could be effected in the 
 best and cheapest way by the establishment already existing 
 under the charge of Mr. Rooke, which supplies the black 
 smith’s forges at the mine and village.

 if once brought into proper working order, will be able to

 eight fathoms, one foot; here no alteration worthy of notice 
 has taken place in the vein, but the stuff continues to produce 
 a little gold at the stamps. 
 
 ce At Allcock’s shaft, 21 fathom level, we have driven west 
 seven fathoms, two feet, on a branch to the south of all the 
 former workings ; the jacotinga from this place is deposited 
 at the surface for a trial, as has been previously explained. 
 
 “ The 21 fathom level, east of Duval’s shaft, is driven 
 eleven fathoms, four feet, on the south limb of the vein; 
 samples from this place occasionally shew a little gold. The 
 cross-cut south east of this shaft has been driven 5j fathoms, 
 and holed to the level last mentioned. 
 
 The 14 fathom level, west of Bray’s shaft, has been 
 driven twelve fathoms; in this end the jacotinga continues 
 very poor. 
 
 ec The shallow level, west of Pengilly’s shaft, has been 
 driven eight fathoms; here the ground is also poor. The 
 cross-cut north of the last mentioned shaft at the horizon of

 is pretty favorable for working; this level is opening or 
 driving for the purpose of draining the Cumba veins, to pre¬

 driven 7i fathoms; in this level, and in the backs over it, we 
 have several auriferous veins, which produce pretty well at

 Mr. Geo. Naylor called upon him yesterday, but did 
 not find him at home ; but Mr. Naylor had an interview 
 with him this morning about another business, and he 
 was pleased to assure him, that your dependency would 
 not experience any demur or delay on his part, on 
 which we beg leave to congratulate you. 
 
 “ Your Deposit question is yet depending, and you 
 may rely upon our rendering every aid in our power 
 towards its passing favorably through the Chambers. 
 
 “We are sorry to add, that Mr. Duval met with an 
 accident last night, by falling from the step of a chaise, 
 and the wheel passing over his leg. He is in the 
 country, and we hope not much hurt ; but we are going 
 to see him as soon as we have concluded our letters.’’

 in the present conveyance, H. M. S. Sparrowhawk, but 
 the Commander having refused to take it, unless at the 
 freight specified in the Government regulations—say 
 1} per cent., we, in conformity with your instructions 
 dated 5th February, 1839, directing us not to ship your 
 gold per ships of war at a higher freight than 1 per 
 cent., shall retain it for the next packet, the Alert, 
 now daily looked for, should a good merchant vessel
