The portrait collection represents the gradual accumula- tion of over one hundred years. In 1793 the trustees voted to purchase portraits of Eleazar Wheelock and John Phillips. These were painted by Joseph Steward, an alumnus of the class of 1780. They were among the first efforts of this artist, and in after years he was wont to refer to them as his " evil deeds." From this modest beginning the collection slowly increased. In 1819 an attempt was made by the trustees to secure portraits of the counsel m the Dartmouth College case, who were invited to sit for them, but the necessary funds not being forthcoming the project was abandoned for the time. Finally in 1834 at the suggestion of Dr. George Cheyne Shat- tuck, who ultimately assumed the expense himself, portraits of Jeremiah Mason, Jeremiah Smith, and Joseph Hopkinson were obtained. Dr. Shattuck had already in 1828 presented a portrait of Daniel Webster. He took an active interest in the collection, as in all Dartmouth affairs, and in 1836, the year in which the portraits were completed and turned over to the college, he was invited by the trustees to sit for his own picture, but his modesty led him to decline. The college later received a picture of him through his son, Dr. George C. Shattuck, of Boston. The portrait of the Earl of Dartmouth, presented by William, fourth Earl of that name, arrived by the ship Cambria in New York, about the first of July, 1829, and at the request of the Corporation of the City of New York, was permitted to be displayed by the side of a portrait of Washington at their Fourth of July banquet. It was then repacked and proceeded on its way to Hanover. This inter- esting canvas was a copy of an original by Sir Joshua Rey- nolds in the Foundling hospital, London, painted by another artist also named Reynolds, probably Samuel William, better known as an engraver. About 1850 there grew up a pleasant custom among the different classes of presenting portraits of favorite instructors. A considerable number were added in this way, but of late years the custom has declined. The great literary societies, the Social Friends and the United Fraternity, had each acquir- ed by purchase and gift a number of portraits which hung in their library. These also have been added to the general col- lection. In 1802 the portraits were deposited by order of the trus- tees in room 4, lower floor of Dartmouth Hall, where they shared the space with the various college apparatus. From here they were moved in 1828 to the north end of the same floor, where the library was then situated. When the library was moved to Reed Hall in 1840 the portrait collection accom- panied it, and was for some time kept with the books. The growing numbers, however, soon called for more adequate accommodations, and a room was fitted up for the purpose in the southeast corner of the lower floor of Reed Hall, where the pictures were moved about 1850. Here they were destined to remain until 1885, when they followed the library to its present quarters in Wilson Hall. No sketch of this interesting collection, however cursory, can with justice omit mention of Gov. B. F. Prescott, a trus- tee of the college from 1877 to 1895. Gov. Prescott, long a valued friend of the college, was unwearied in his efforts to enrich the gallery, which is indebted to him for over seventy of its portraits. The collection is interesting as well from an artistic as an historical point of view. Among the list of portrait painters appear the names of Vanderlyn, Trumbull, and Sir Joshua Reynolds ; of other pieces, Shurtleff, Brumidi, and Spagno- letto ; and in sculpture, Ball, Crawford, and French. Three very interesting portraits remain the subject of conjecture. Two of them certainly, and the third probably, were pur- chased some sixty years ago in Florence, Italy, at the sale of the gallery of Cardinal Fesch. This was an extensive and valuable collection numbering over three thousand pictures. A catalogue of the gallery is still in existence, and in posses- sion of the library, but the descriptions are too similar to each other, and too vague to afford the desired information. The Spalding collection of art photographs, a list of which is appended, was a gift from the Hon. Edward Spalding, of the class of 1833. CATALOGUE OF PORTRAITS. 1. DARTMOUTH, WILLIAM LEGGE, 2nd earl.
