Tenbrook, installed Dec. 28, 1854, liv- ing near Sadorus. First mentioned in the Grand Lodge records as Steward in Fraternal Lodge No. 58, Monticello, in 1848, and then in 1851 representing Fraternal Lodge No. 58 at Grand Lodge as Senior Warden. He was a Charter member of Fraternal Lodge No. 58. In 1854 he became a Charter Member of Urbana Lodge No. 157 and was appointed Master of the Lodge. Our First Master demitting from Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 16, 1861. On Oct. 8th, 1863 he became a Charter Member and 1st Senior Warden of Tolono Lodge No. 391, was elected Master of Tolono Lodge on Dec. 19, 1865 and installed as Master of Tolono Lodge on Jan. 2nd, 1866. He became a Charter Member of J. D. Gorin Lodge No. 537 at Sadorus Oct. 3rd, 1866. Died at Sadorus on April 10th, 1891. He was certainly a Mason as we un- derstand it. SECOND MASTER. A. M. Whitney, merchant, was installed as Mas- ter Jan. ,3rd, 1856. He petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 9th, 1854, was elected Feb. 17th, 1855, and admitted Feb. 17th, 1855. He e\d- dently came in by Demit or Transfer as the records do not show any Degree conferred. He Demitted from Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Jan. 3rd, 1857. On March 27:h, 1857 ihe forwarded a petition to the Grand Lodge for a Lodge U. D. in West Urbana, now the City of Champaign. The petition was granted and a lodge U. D. instituted on May 11th, 1857. This Lodge was chartered as Western Star Lodge No. 240 and A. M. Whitney became its first Master. In 1857 A. M. Whitney by proxy of Grand Master James H. Hubbord constituted Homer Lodge No. 199. THIRD MASTER. William C. Cassel, carpenter, was a Charter Mem- ber of Urbana Lodge No. 157 A. F. & A. M. No record of date in instal- lation as Master is found. On Tuesday, Jan. 12th, 1858. acting under a Proxy of the ithen Grand Master of Masons of the State of Illinois, Most Worshipful Brotlher Harrison Dills, Brother Cassell constituted Western Star Lodge No. 240, located at West Urbana, now the City of Champaign. He demitted on Feb. 5th, 1859. FOURTH MASTER. Amasa O. Clapp, merchant, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 12, 1854, elected September 12, 1854, initiated Oct. 7th, 1854, passed Dec. 27th, 1854, and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on Jan. 20th, 1855. He was tihe first who received the Degrees in Urbana Lodge No. 157 to become Master. He demitted May 5th, 1883. FIFTH MASTER. Solomon J. Toy, clerk, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 1st, 1855, elected Jan. 5th, 1856, initiated Jan. 5th, 1856, passed March 5th, 1856, and raised on May 5th, 1856. On June 15th, 1863 under proxy of the then most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons of the State of Illinois, Francis M. Blair, he instituited Tolono Lodge, U. D. He demitted from Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 3rd, 1867. SIXTH MASTER. Joseph Oscar Cunningham, lawyer, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 27tih, 1861, elected Feb. 1st, 1862 by affiliation. BESORE F. M. AVRJ'.iHT J, H. FIXFROCK C. M. WEBBER that since Brother S. J. demitted on August 3rd, 1867, he must have" been elected as early as the first Saturday in December 1866. Judge Joseph O. Cunningham, the Sixth Worshipful Master of Urbana Lodge, was born at Lancaster, New York, on December 12, 1830. In 1833, his parents removed to an uncleared farm near Clarks- vJlle, Ohio. It was here that Judge Cunningham received his early education, in a log schoolhouse. At nineteen years of age, he began teaching a country school, in which occupation he was engaged for three years. He spent three years in Oberlin College and at Baldwin Institute in Ohio, and in June, 1853, came to Champaign County, Illi- nois, where he resided until his death on April 30, 1917. Shortly after his arrival in this county. Judge Cunningham became one of the proprietors and the editor of the Urbana Union, which paper had been owned by Colonel W. N. Coler, of this city. Under Judge Cunningham's management, the Union became a zealous sup- porter of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln-Douglas campaign of 1858. He was also associated, in 1858, with Dr. J. W. Scroggs in the publi- cation of the Central Illinois Gazette at Champaign, then West Urbana. Judge Cunningham was of a literary turn of mind. In addition to his newspaper work, he wrote a History of Champaign County, in which is preserved a large amount of matter bearing upon the local and general history of this county. He was admitted to the bar in April, 1855, and later, in 1858-1859, took a year's course in the law school at Cleveland, Ohio. He practiced forty-seven years in Ui'bana, and was aii able, conscientious counsellor and adviser to his clients. He served one term as Judge of the County Court of Champaign County, and two terms of four years each as a Trustee of the Uni- versity. He collaborated with William C. Jones in writing and pub- lishing a work on "County and Probate Court Practice." On October 13, 1853, Judge Cunningham was married to Miss Marie McConughey. He was charitably inclined, and in 1894 he and Mrs. Cunningham gave their home, northeast of Urbana, with fifteen acres of ground in connection therewith, for a deaconess' home and orphan- age, which home is now known as the Cunningham Children's Home. He became a member of the Methodist Church of this city in 1866, and so remained until his death. In his law practice. Judge Cunningham was a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln, and was practicing at the Champaign County Bar when Judge David Davis was on the old Eighth Judicial Circuit. Judge Cunningham was one of nature's noblemen, and during his long life in this commhnity he always stood for those things which he believed would be for the betterment of the community and of its citizens. SEVENTH MASTER. Myron S. Brown, doctor, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Oct. 1st, 1864, elected Nov. 5th, 1864, apparently by affiliation, elected Master of Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 4th, 1869 and installed the same date by Worshipful Brother J. 0. BOWER ROYAI. WRIGHT FRED HESS B. BING Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 5th, 1871, was elected Sept. 2nd, 1871, initiated Oct. 16, 1871, passed Dec. 7th, 1871 and raised Jan. 6, 1872. He was elected Master on Dec. 2nd, 1876 and installed on Dec. 27, 1876 by Worshipful Brother J. O Cunningham. He served one year as Wor- shipful Master. He died at the Soldiers' Home, Danville, Dlinois, Sept. 18th, 1923, after serving his country and his lodge. NINTH MASTER. Edward Blackshaw, dentist, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 7th, 1861, and was elected Dec. 27th, 1861, ap- parently by affiliation. He was elected Master of Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 1st, 1877, and installed on -Jan. 1st, 1878. Brother Black- shaw sei-ved two years as Master, and also as Grand Master of the Grand Council Royal and Select Masters. He died March 27th, 1911, at Urbana. TENTH MASTER. Charles Schlorff, shoemaker, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Feb. 7th, 1874, and was elected March 7th, 1874, initiated March 21st, 1874, passed April 18, 1874, and raised May 19th, 1874. He was elected Master of Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Dec. 3rd, 1881 and installed on Jan. 7th, 1882 by Worshipful Brother M. S. Brown. He died at Kinmundy, Illinois, Dec. 19th, 1913, after serving his country and his lodge. ELEVENTH MASTER. Frederick E. Eubling, merchant, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 1st, 1868, and was elected Sept. 5th, 1868, initiated Sept. 22nd, 1868, passed Oct. 22nd, 1868, and raised Nov. 19th, 1868. He was elected Master Dec. 2nd, 1882 and installed Jan. 6';;h, 1883, by Worshipful Brother Charles Schlorff. He was again elected Master on Dec. 6th, 1884 and installed Jan. 3rd, 1885, elected on Dec. 5th, 1885 and installed Jan. 2nd, 1886, elected in December 1889 and installed Jan. 2nd, 1890, elected on Dec. 4th, 1890, and in- stalled on Jan. 1st, 1891, holding the office of Master five times. He also served as District Deputy Grand Master. He died July 23rd, 1911. He also served his country and his lodge. TWELFTH MASTER. Francis M. Wright, lawyer, petitioned Ur- bana Lodge No. 157 Jan. 1st, 1881, and was elected Feb. 5th, 1881, initiated Feb. 9th, 1881, passed Feb. 23rd, 1881, and raised Mardli 23, 1881. He was elected Master Dec. 1st, 1883 and installed Jan. 5th. 1884, by Worshipful Brother F. E. Eubling. F. M. Wright was again elected Master on Dec. 4th, 1886 and installed Jan. 1st, 1887, elected Worshipful Master on Dec. 1st, 1887 and installed on Jan. 5th, 1888. He was Circuit Judge and Federal Judge. He died July 15th, 1917 at Urbana, after serving his country and his lodge. THIRTEENTH MASTER. Patrick Richards, banker, petitioned Ur- bana Lodge No. 157 Jan. 5th, 1884 and was elected Feb. 2nd, by afffiliation. He was elected Master Dec. 6th, 1888 and installed Jan. 3rd, 1889. He died on Jan. 1st, 1899. FOURTEENTH MASTER. Robert A. Webber, fanner, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on April 5th, 1862 and was elected May 3rd, 1862, initiated May 3rd, 1962, passed June 7th, 1862, and raised Aug. 2nd, 1862. E. SHORE FIFTEENTH MASTER. John H. Finfrock, miller, petitioned Ur- bana Lodge No. 157, Jan. 1st, 1881, and was elected Feb. 5th, 1881 by affiliation. He was elected Master Urbana Lodge No. 157, Dec. 1st, 1892 and installed Jan. 5th, 1893. He died on July 6th, 1896, at Urbana, Illinois. SEVENTEENTH MASTER. Charles A. Besore, carpenter, peti- tioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Feb. 5th, 1876, and was elected March 4th, 1876, initiated March 8th, 1876, passed April 5th, 1876, and raised May 29th, 1876. He was elected Master Dec. 1st, 1896 and in- stalled Jan. 5th, 1897. TWENTIETH MASTER. William Harry Roughton, jailer, petition- ed Urbana Lodge No. 157 May 7th, 1887, and was elected June 4th, 1887, initiated June 8th, 1887, passed June 15th, 1887, and raised June 22nd, 1887. He was elected Master Dec. 4th, 1900 and installed Dec. 18th, 1900 ,again elected Master June 4th, 1901 and installed on July 2nd, 1901, this being on account of change in the by-laws of the Lodge changing the Annual Meeting from December to June. Brother Roughton died Nov. 26th, 1916 from an injury received while on duty as Urbana City Fire Chief. TWENTY-SECOND MASTER. William Howard Webb, letter car- rier, petitioned Urbana Lodge No. 157, March 21st, 1899, and was elected April 8th, 1899, initiated April 25tih, 1899, passed May 9th, 1899, and raised May 17th, 1899. He was elected Master of Urbana Lodge No. 157 on June 2nd, 1903, and installed July 7th, 1903. He served one year. Brother Webb died Dec. 15th, 1917, at Urbana, Illinois. TWENTY-SIXTH. Henry Irwin Boner, carpenter, petitioned Ur- bana Lodge No. 157 on Aug. 6th, 1901, and was elected Sept. 3rd, 1901, initiated Sept. 10th, 1901, passed April 23rd, 1902 and raised May 9th, 1902. He was elected Master Urbana Lodge No. 157 June 2nd, 1908 and installed July 7th, 1908. He was demitted from Urbana Lodge No. 157 in 1910. TWENTY-NINTH MASTER. William Grant Spurgin, lawyer, peti- tioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on April 5th, 1894 and was elected March 3rd, 1894 by affiliation from Paxton Lodge No. 416. He was elected Master June 4th, 1912 and installed as Master on July 2nd, 1912. He was a Grand Lecturer and District Deputy Grand Master, also served as County Judge. He died on May 4th, 1926 at Urbana, Illinois. THIRTY-FIRST MASTER. John W. Herrigan, blacksmith, peti- tioned Urbana Lodge No. 157 on Feb. 6th, 1896 and was elected March 5th, 1896 by affiliation from Areola Lodge No. 366. He had been a Master Mason since 1867. Brother Herrigan was elected Master Ur- bana Lodge No. 157 on June 6th, 1916 and installed on June 30th, 1916. He was proficient in the Catechism of the degrees of the Lodge, and instructed candidates. Brother Herrigan died on June 25th, 1921, after serving both Lodge and country. C. H. FERRIS M. W. GEN UN G H. O. CONGI>ETON A. A. l.UCAS O. >I. HUNT E. G. BOURNE DAVID ELLIOTT BRUFFETT was bom at Mt. Sterling, Madison County, Ohio, Sept. 27th, 1847, and moved to Illinois in 1851. He received the Masonic degree in Fratemai Lodge No. 58, A. F. & A. M. at Monticello, Illinois, and served as Senior Warden one year and as Master one year. He was demitted to Wetsern Star Lodge No. 240 A. F. & A. M. at Champaign, Jan. 25th, 1892, and from there placed his membership in Urbana Lodge No. 157 Oct. 5th, 1893. He was Worshipful Master of Urbana Lodge No. 157 from 1894 thru 1896, and was District Deputy Grand Master of the 17th District from 1899 to 1906. He was commissioned a Grand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge in 1888 and each succeeding year to the present time. Brother Bruf- fett also served as a member of the Committee on Grand Masters Address 1912 and 1913. He was appointed Grand Steward of Grand Lodge. Oct. 13th, 1921 and re-appointed each year to the present time. Brother Bruffett has conducted schools of instruction for lodges in ten counties, and has pronounced 'the funeral services over 239 Masons. He has installed the officers of many lodges, officiated in ceremonies in the "laying of cornerstones" of buildings, instituted and constituted lodges, and also dedicated one Masonic Temple, as the proxy of the Grand Master. Brother Bruffett is a veteran of the Civil War, and at present is a very active member of the Masonic fraternity. CHARLES M. WEBBER, formerly County Clerk and Postmaster, was born Oct. 20th, 1869 at Urbana, 111. He was made a Master Mason Apr. 25th, 1892, was Secretary during the years from 1893 thru 1895, Senior Warden in 1896 and 1897, and Worshipful Master in 1898 and 1899. Son of R. A. Webber, the 14ith Master. CYRUS N. CLARK, monument dealer, was born at Princeton, Indiana, July 9th, 1860. He affiliated wiith Urbana Lodge No. 157 April 6th, 1893, and was Senior Deacon in 1895, Treasurer 1903 and 1904 and Worshipful Master in 1900. ROYAL WRIGHT was Worshipful Master from 1902 to 1903. FRANCIS A SOMERS, construction contractor, was born Oct. 1st, 1871 at Urbana. He was made a Master Mason on May 30th, 1899, was Junior Warden in 1902, Senior Warden in 1903 and Worshipful Master in 1904. FRED HESS, county clerk of Champaign County, was bom May 19th, 1871, in Champaign, Illinois. He was made a Master Mason on June 11th, 1895, and was Secretary during the years from 1896 thru 1900. He was Junior Warden in 1903, Senior Warden in 1904, and Worshipful Master from 1905 to 1907 and from 1914 to 1915. CHARLES H. INGALLS, jeweler, was made a Master Mason Feb. 8th, 1899. He was Junior Warden from 1905 to 1906, Senior Warden from 1906 to 1907, and Worshipful Master from 1907 to 1908. BENJAMIN BING, merchant, was born at Urbana, Illinois, Aug, 27th, 1867. He was elected to receive degrees in Urbana Lodge No. 157, A. F. & A. M. on July 18th, 1905, initiated July 24th, 1905, passed (Fellowcraft Degree) Aug 11th, 1905 and made a Master Mason Nov. 15th, 1905. Brother Bing was Junior Warden from 1907 to 1908, Senior Warden from 1908 to 1909, Worshipful Master from 1909 to 1911, and has been Secretary from 1913 to 1918, 1919 to 1929 and still holds that office, having held it for 15 years. He was commis- sioned Grand Lecturer of Grand Lodge Oct. 14th, 1909, and recom- missioned each succeeding year to the present time. He was a mem- ber of the Building Committee of the present Masonic Temple, with Judge W. G. Spurgin and George M. Bennett, and has been connected with the Board of Trustees for more than twenty years. He was the firs:t member of Urbana Lodge No. 157 who received his degrees in that lodge to be commissioned Grand Lecturer. LOMA W. GOBEN was Junior Deacon from 1904 to 1905, Senior Deacon from 1909 to 1910, and Worshipful Master from 1911 to 1912. CHARLES F. LOEB, Assistant Cashier, First National Bank, was born Nov. 14th, 1882 at Tolono, Illinois. He was made a Master Mason Dec. 29th, 1905, was Secretary from 1907 to 1911, Junior War- den fro ml912 to 1914, Senior Warden from 1914 to 1915, and Wor- shipful Master from 1915 to 1916. FRANCIS M. PORTER, Prof. Eng. Drawing at the University of Illinois, was born Feb. 14th, 1881 at Circleville, Ohio. He was made a Master Mason Mar. 22nd, 1912, was Junior Warden from 1915 to 1916, Senior Warden from 1916 to 1917, and Worshipful Master from 1917 to 1918. PETER FURST was born Jan. 30th, 1874 near Philo, Illinois. He was elected July 7th, 1914, initiated Nov. 17th, 1914, passed Nov. 23rd, 1914, and made a Master Mason Nov. 26th, 1914. He served as Junior Deacon during 1916, Junior Warden in 1917, and Worshipful Master in 1918. He is chairman of the committee on Lodge History. JACOB C. WHITE is a building contractor and has been Supei"\asor of Urbana (now Cunningham) Tp. for eight years. He was born July 30th, 1859 in Doage County, West Virginia. He was made a Master Mason Nov. 21st, 1916, and was a Senior Warden from 1918 to 1919. He was Worshipful Master from 1919 to 1921. RALPH L. LANHAM, Supt. of the University lU. S. Postal Station, was born at Monroeville, Ohio, Jan. 31st, 1892. He was made a Mas- ter Mason Nov. 2Gth, 1918, was Junior Warden from 1919 to 1920, Senior Warden from 1920 to 1921, and Worshipful Master from 1921 to 1922. He has been a Grand Lecturer from 1921 to the present time. OREN E. SHOBE, coal dealer, was born in Stanton township. Champaign County, on August 14th, 1876. He was made a Master den from 1912 to 1914, Senior Warden from 1914 to 1915, and Wor- den from 1921 to 1922, and Worshipful Master from 1922 to 1923. He has been Grand Lecturer from 1922 to the present time and is presi- dent of the Central Illinois Grand Lecturers' Club. CHARLES H. FERRIS was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, Oct. 8th, 1856. He was made a Master Mason July 10th, 1920, was Junior Warden from 1922 to 1923, and Worshipful Master from 1923 to 1924. MERWIN W. GENUNG, clerk, Acct'g Office, U. of I., was born Jan. 19th, 1893 at Rantoul. Illinois. He was made a Master Mason in Rantoul Lodge No. 470 A. F. & A. M. Dec. 8th, 1915, transferred his membership to Urbana Lodge July 4th, 1922, and was immediaitely appointed and installed as Senior Deacon on this date. On June 30th, 1923, he was installed as Junior Warden, and passing the office of Senior Warden, was duly installed as Worshipful Master July 1st, 1924. Brother Genung successfully passed the examination given by the Board of Grand Examiners and was granted a commission as Grand Lecl:urer Aug. 1st, 1925, and recommissioned each year to the present time. HARLAN D. CONGLETON, bookkeeper, was born at Pesotum, Illi- nois, September 9th, 1901. He was made a Master Mason Nov. 17ith, 1922, was Senior Deacon from 1923 to 1924, Senior Warden from 1924 to 1925, and Worshipful Master from 1925 to 1926. ALBERT A. LUCAS, baker, was born near Romney (Montgomery Co.) Indiana on July 19th, 1884. He was made a Master Mason on June 26th, 1923, was Junior Warden from 1924 to 1925, Senior Warden from 1925 to 1926, and Worshipful Master from 1926 to 1927. He advanced rapidly, becoming Worshipful Master three years after join- ing the lodge. OSSIAN M. HUNT, locomotive engineer, was born at Neoga, Illi- nois, February 12th, 1874. He was made a Master Mason April 16th, 1921, was Senior Warden from 1926 to 1927 and was Worshipful Mas- iter from 1927 to 1928. ENOCH G. BOURNE, Prof. Ceranics College, University of Illinois, was born at East Liverpool, Ohio, on March 26th, 1879. He was made a Master Mason on May 2nd, 1922 ,was Junior Warden from 1926 to 1927, Senior Warden from 1927 to 1928, and Worshipful Mas- ter from 1928 to 1929. B. RUPERT HALL, Superintendent of Pattern Laboratory, Univer- sity of Illinois, was born at Carbondale, Pennsylvania, on Dec. 17th, 1869. He was Junior Warden from 1927 to 1928, Senior Warden from 1928 to 1929, and is Worshipftil Master at the present time.
