The Library of the Institute shall be in charge of the Superintendent, under the control of the Library- Committee, and shall be kept open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from 3 to 6 p.m., and from 7 to 10 every evening for the delivery and return of books. Rule II. The Library shall consist of two divisions, one of reference, and one of circulation ; and the Li- brary Committee shall decide in which division any book shall be placed. Rule III. The works placed in the division of reference, which shall be distinguished in the Catalogue by an * shall not be given out of the Institute, except by the permission in writing of a member of the Library Committee, who shall become responsible for the safe return of the same. Rule IV. It shall be the duty of the Superintendent, before giving any book out of the Library, to ascertain and record the place of residence or employment of the Member. Rule V. Each member shall be allowed to have one, and no more than one volume out at one time, except when the plates belonging to any work are bound in a separate volume, when he may have them in addition to a volume. Rule VI. The Superintendent shall enter into a book, to be kept for that purpose, the number and title of each volume delivered by him, the name of the member to whom delivered, and the time of the delivery, and shall, when the volume is returned, enter the date when returned. Rule VII. Two weeks shall be allowed for reading an octa- vo, or smaller volume, three weeks for a quarto, and four w r eeks for a folio volume, and any mem- ber Avho shall fail to return a book within the time limited for reading the same, shall, for each day of its detention beyond that time, be fined one pen- ny if it be an octavo or smaller volume, twopence if a quarto, and threepence it a folio volume, and shall not bo allowed to take other books until the fine incurred be paid. Rule VIII. Any Member who may not have finished the perusal of any volume at the expiration of the time allowed for the reading thereof, may retain the same for seven days longer, upon notifying the Superin- tendent thereof, provided no other Member shall have applied for the Book. Rule IX. Members may be allowed the perusal of Books, either of Circulation or Reference, in the Reading Room, and the same, when delivered to the party shall be entered by the Superintendent in a Book to be kept for that purpose ; but any Member taking any Book obtained in such manner out of the Insti- tute, shall incur a fine of two shillings and sixpence, and shall not be allowed the privileges of the Li- brary until the same be paid. Rule X. If any Member lose or injure a Book belonging to the Library, he shall pay the value of, or replace the same ; and if the Book belong to a set, he shall pay the value of, or replace the set. Rule XL Any Member lending a Book to any other person shall be fined two shillings and sixpence. Rule XII. The Superintendent shall be bound to see that the Rules of the Library are observed, endeavor to obtain all Books kept beyond the proper time, col- lect all fines, keep the Books in their proper place in the Library ; and shall report, from time to time, to the Library Committee, the names of any works kept beyond the proper time, or which may be lost, together with the names of the Members who may keep or shall have lost them. 8 Rule XIII. The Library Committee shall examine the Books and report on the condition of the Library to the General Committee one week previous to each An- nual Meeting; and for that purpose shall call in the Books one fortnight before that period, and any Member failing to return any Book after due notice, shall incur a penalty of sixpence a-day for each day the Book is detained. RULES OF THE READING ROOM, Rule I, The Reading Room shall be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., from the first of May to the first of Novem- ber ; and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the remain- ing six months. Rule II. Members while in the Reading Room shall not enter into any conversation, dispute or discussion, so as to annoy or distract the attention of others ; and no Member shall be allowed to smoke in the Rooms, damage or injure the furniture thereof, or to conduct himself in any way inconsistent with decorum. t Rule III. Any Member injuring or carrying away any of the Periodicals or Newspapers placed in the Rooms, shall be liable to a fine equal lo double the cost thereof. Rule IV. Members shall have the privilege of introducing persons not resident in Montreal to the Reading Room, for a period of fifteen days, the names of such persons being first entered in the Visitors' Book, together with the names of the Members in- troducing them.
