WATER GAUGES AND WATER COLUMNS BOILER WATER GAUGE SAFETY FEATURES:—This device is for the protection of Boiler Room attendants against the rush of steam and water incident to broken water gauge glasses. The top and bottom fittings contain check valves which are closed by boiler pressure upon the breaking of the glass. Said valves effect a complete shut off with the exception of a negligible amount of steam and water which es¬ capes through by-pass channels. This construction makes it impossible to show a false water level because it will not permit of a complete shut-off between the boiler and the gauge-glass. CODE REFERENCE:—In construction the device conforms to the requirements of paragraph 427 of the Safety Standards of the Industrial Board applying to Boilers. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 6. Granted June G, 191G to the Northern Tool Company. Inc., Utica, N. Y. A SHIS BOILER WATER GAUGE. WATER GAUGES AND WATER COLUMNS “OSWEGO” SAFETY WATER COLUMN SAFETY FEATURES:—An automatic whistle sounds a warning for either low or high water. Two water-filled gravity weights are fastened to levers, and so adjusted that they are in balance with each other, when the water level is between the two weights. As the water level rises it submerges the upper weight breaking the balance, causing the whistle to sound for high water. The lowering of the water level exposes the lower weight, causing it to become heavier, sounding the whistle for low water. CODE REFERENCE:—The construction of the device com¬ plies with Paragraphs 291, 291, 321 of the Safety Stand¬ ards of the Industrial Board applying to Boilers. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 16. Granted October 3, 1916 to Pitts & Kitts Manufacturing & Supply Company, New York City, New York. 6 Blow down valve placed in line to be operated from floor level. “OSWEGO” SAFETY WATER COLUMN V/ATER GAUGES AND WATER COLUMNS “IRONCLAD” WATER GLASS PROTECTOR OR GAUGE FOR BOILERS SAFETY FEATURE:—This device is designed for protec¬ tion against the flying particles of glass generally ac¬ companying the bursting of water gauge glasses, and is also intended to make safe the use of tubular water gauge glass for high pressure steam boilers. The de¬ vice consists of three glass panels set in a metal frame, the front being so arranged as to be easily and quickly removable, facilitating the cleaning of the gauge glass and protective glass panels. Adjustments can be made and leakage taken up at the steam joints with the pro¬ tective panels in position. CODE REFERENCE:—The Safety Standards of the Indus¬ trial Board applying to Boilers (Revised 1919) contain no requirements for a device of this type, its desirability being the safety feature embraced in its design. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 46. Granted March 6, 1917 to the Sargent Company, Chicago, Ill. -- .7 8 “IRONCLAD” WATER GLASS REFLECTORS OR GAUGE FOR BOILERS. AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF DEVICES FOR WATER GAUGE GLASSES AUTOMATIC STOP AND CHECK VALVES SAFETY FEATURE:—The vital parts consist of upper and lower disks, a seat and levers for automatically con¬ trolling the operation of said disks. In the event of a broken boiler tube, the upper disk automatically seats ; thus shutting off the steam from other boilers, confining the trouble to the boiler in which the break has oc¬ curred. This disk remains closed until the pressure in the boiler again ecpials the main line pressure, at which time said disk automatically opens and connects the boiler to the main steam line. The lower disk auto¬ matically disconnects the boiler in the event of a break in the main steam line. CODE REFERENCE:—The installation of automatic non¬ turn valves for steam boilers is in accordance with paragraph 303 of the Safety Standards of the Industrial Board applying to Boilers. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 49. Granted March 28, 1917 to the Lagonda Manufacturing Company, Springfield, Ohio. 10 AUTOMATIC STOP AND CHECK VALVES AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF DEVICES FOR WATER GUAGE GLASSES AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF FOR WATER GAUGE GLASSES SAFETY FEATURE:—This device is intended to protect boiler room attendants from the rush of steam and water accompanying the bursting of water gauge glasses. It consists of two fittings containing ball check valves that can be readily attached to water gauges and steam separators, being screwed into posi¬ tion in the place of packing nuts. The ball in the upper fitting is held up directly over the ball seat by a bronze spring, and cannot close until forced to seat by steam pressure. The ball in the lower fitting is heavy and lies normally in a retainer directly under the ball seat. Both the upper and lower balls cannot seat only in the eyent of a broken gauge glass. This construction elimi¬ nates the possible danger of stopping olf the gauge. CODE REFERENCE:—This device conforms to paragraph 427 of the appendix of the Safety Standards of the In¬ dustrial Board applying to Boilers. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 104. Granted May 28, 1918 to L. I. Breakey, Marshall, Michigan. 12 AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF FOR WATER GAUGE GLASSES. GAUGE GLASS GUARDS “I-GARD” SHIELD & REFLECTOR OR GAUGE FOR BOILERS SAFETY FEATURE:—This device is designed for the pro¬ tection of boiler room attendants during the installation and test of new water gauge glasses. In construction it comprises two rotating brass shields running in grooves in top and bottom holder, which are clamped to the gauge cocks above and below the packing gland nuts. The inner panel is finished in fiat white with red line down the center, which increases the visibility by causing the water in the gauge to assume a red color against a white back ground. CODE REFERENCE:—The Safety Standards of the Indus- trial Board applying to Boilers (Revised 1919) contain no requirement for a device of this type, its desirability being the safety feature embraced in its design. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 17. Granted October 3, 1916 to the Gardner Grate Com¬ pany, Boston, Mass. 14 i GAUGE GLASS GUARDS BOILER GAUGE GLASS GUARD SAFETY FEATURE:—This device protects boiler room attendants in the event of the bursting of water gauge glasses. The gauge glass is covered by a removable guard provided with a wire glass front. The holes in the back of the guard at the top and bottom allow the steam to escape in the event of an accident. The slid¬ ing ends are fastened together by a small bolt and nut so that the steam pressure cannot force the ends apart and allow the glass front to be blown out in case of accident. Diagonal red lines show the water level at a glance. CODE REFERENCE:—The Safety Standards of the Indus¬ trial Board applying to Boilers (Revised 1919) contain no requirement for a device of this type, its desirability being the safety feature embraced in its design. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 107. Granted November 13, 1918 to Safety Appliance Com¬ pany, Newtonville, Mass. 16 BOILER GAUGE GLASS GUARD. GAUGE GLASS GUARDS BOILER GAUGE GLASS PROTECTORS SAFETY FEATURE:—This device is designed primarily to protect the eyes of boiler room attendants against bursting gauge glasses. The protector is constructed of special glass, sides and front held firmly in position by brass end plates with bolts extending the entire length of the protector. The protector back is fastened in position with two “U” bolts. This construction per¬ mits of the gauge glass protector being swung either to the right or left when installing a new gauge glass. The device does not interfere with the observation of the water level. CODE REFERENCE:—Safetv Standards of the Industrial Board applying to Boilers (Revised 1919) contains no requirement for a device of this type, its desirability being the safety feature embraced in its design. CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL NO. 57. Granted June 12, 1917 to Reiber-Gibbs Company, Pitts¬ burgh, Penna.
