Douglas Volk, honoring the name of Senator S. A. Douglas whose cousin was Volk's mother. Leonard W. Volk, his father, was an intimate friend of the President. All his life he had been haunted by the personality of Lincoln, whom he worshipped. Accompanying the above are the following letters: L.s. by Robert T. Lincoln, 1 p., Wash- ington, Feb. 1, 1926, thanking Mr Volk for "the photograph of your recently completed portrait of my father . . . From the photograph I should say that it is an excellent portrait . . ." . ♦ A.L.s by Cass Gilbert, famous architect, April 21, 1927, to Mr Volk, reading in part: "/ must not let another day go by without thanking you for the photograph of your noble portrait of Lincoln. It is the finest portrait of Lincoln in existence and superbly painted. [Continued 1 KINDLY READ CONDITIONS OF SALE IN FOREPART OF CATALOGUE Number 4 — Concluded] As a work of art it is thoroughly sculpturesque in style and possesses all the indications of being a most accurate presentment of the great man as he was before the nomination for the presidency of the United States, or before the heavy cares of State had added the furrows to his brow. A great many accounts have been printed about this particular bust. A most interesting one appeared in the N. Y. Herald, Feb. 7, 1909, entitled "Register of Lincoln's Personality. Interesting Reminiscence by Douglas Volk, son of Leonard W. Volk"; the page from the newspaper accompanies the bust. Mr Leonard W. Volk tells how his father made the mask for the present bust, and details the entire operation setting forth Lincoln's actions. F. L. Bullard, in his work "Lincoln in Marble and Bronze", 1952, pp. 90-1, reprints Leonard W. Volk's account of the sitting by Lincoln for this bust. Accompanying the above are letters by George Grey Barnard, Charles Biggs (who visited the Volk studio with Lincoln at time of the making of the bust), and Karl Bitter, all relating to the bust. Also accompanying the bust are two typewritten letters by Douglas Volk, one signed in full, the other with initials, dated Feb. 21 and Feb. 27, 1931, pertaining to the bust. A framed half-tone reproduction of a photograph of L. W. Volk in his studio accompanies the bust. On the margin is written the following by Douglas Volk: "Leonard W. Volk. Leonard Wells Volk carving the bust of Lincoln. He had previously (April 1860) made the lije mask of Lincoln in this same studio in Chicago (1860). Cast of right hand of the nominee seen below on floor was made together with left, at Lincoln s Springfield home on the Sunday following his nomination . . . Douglas Volk". [See illustration facing page 1] 5. LINCOLN, A. Original "once remove" plaster cast by Leonard W. Volk from the mold he made of Lincoln's right hand, closed, holding a section of broom- handle cut for the purpose. With inscription "A. Lincoln. By L. W. Volk. 1860". Cast of the right hand of the great emancipator, showing the tremendous strength of char- acter; the fingers are clenched, the hand knotty and determined. Mr F. Lauriston Bullard in his work Lincoln in Marble and Bronze, 1952, p. 90, writes "On Sunday, May 20, the day after Lincoln received formal notice of his nomination, Volk came to the Lincoln home in Springfield to make casts of his hands. 'The right hand ap- peared swollen as compared with the left,' Volk tells us, 'on account of excessive hand- shaking the evening before.' Volk wishes Lincoln to hold something in his right hand, and the candidate went to the woodshed, sawed a few inches off a broom handle, and whittled the edges, so that the cast showed the hand gripping this round stick. For . . . these casts nearly all subsequent Lincoln artists are grateful to the ambitious young sculptor". [See illustration] 6. LINCOLN, A. Original "once remove" plaster cast by Leonard W. Volk from the mold made of Lincoln's left hand, closed. With inscription "A. Lincoln. By L. W. Volk, 1860". Pieces chipped from two fingers at joints. See note to preceding description. Accompanying the mask is the copyright certificate issued to Douglas Volk on September 16, 1907, describing it as "A life mask taken from the face of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas, by L. W. Volk, in Chicago in 1867". Leonard W. Volk married Emily C. Barlow, a cousin of Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, the Democratic candidate in the election of 1860 against Abraham Lincoln. Volk settled in Galena, 111., and there met Stephen A. Douglas, who became deeply interested in his career. "In 1855, supplied with funds by Douglas, Volk left his wife and child in Pittsfield, and went to Rome. When he returned to the United States in 1857, he opened a studio in Chicago and at once became a leader in art movements there. He organized the first art exhibition held there (1859) ; he was one of the founders of the Chicago Academy of Design (1867) and its president for a long time." 10. VOLK, L. The author, a lawyer, came to Boston in 1638, where he lived until 1641, and wrote this work. It is full of valuable information regarding the manners and customs of the colony. The author was manifestly ignorant of the Bible, or perhaps thought that the English divines had added two to the Ten Commandments, for on p. 20 a note reads: "Whereas in England every Sunday are read in public, Chapters and Psalmes in every Church, besides the eleven or twelve Commandments, Epistle and Gospel, the Creed and other good formes . . .". The words "eleven or twelve"" are crossed out with pen and ink, as in all copies, probably by the publisher. FIRST BOOK TO USE THE DOLLAR SIGN 176. LEE, C. The American Accomptant . . .
