1*530 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BULLETIN / Vol. XXXVI January 17, 1939 No. 41 A list of books on Farming, Homemaking and Rural Life For farmers and homemakers University of Illinois College of Agriculture Compiled by the various Departments of the College of Agriculture, University of Illinois October, 1938 UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BULLETIN Published twice a week by The University of Illinois. Entered as second-class matter December 11, 1912, at the post office at Urbana, Illinois, under the Act of Augu.st 24, 1912. Acceptance for mailing at the special rate of postage provided for in section 1103, Act of October 3, 1917, authorized July 31, 1918. Foreword THIS PAMPHLET has been prepared in response to re- quests from Illinois farmers and homemakers for refer- ences to suitable books along the lines of their interests. There is no thought that the list represents a "model library," for no one farmer or homemaker would need or want all the books listed. Neither is the list exhaustive; it rather suggests, under each subject, a few good books that are both dependable and readable. A few books designed as texts in schools have been listed because other more suitable books are not available. No attempt is made to include books of a more general nature — books of biography, fiction, poetry, politics, travel, or religion — which of course have their place in every home library. Many of the books included here are of a type which one would wish to own and have for frequent reference. However, it is not always possible to buy at one time all the books needed — or one may be in doubt whether a particular book is exactly the one desired — and in such cases it is particularly worth while to be able to obtain books for use over a limited period. Your local library may have some of these or be glad to obtain them for you. Or, if local library facilities are not available, the Extension Division of the Illinois State Library, Springfield, may be called upon for loans (see page 28). More farm people should avail themselves of the valuable service rendered by the State Library. A list of the free agricultural and home economics publica- tions issued by the University of Illinois can be obtained upon request (see page 28). Other public sources of information on topics commonly of interest to farmers and homemakers are also listed on the last pages of this pamphlet. Many readers will be surprised to know of the number of agencies from which valu- able material can be obtained free or for a nominal price. Such a compilation as this leaves one impressed, I think, with the large number of good books to which farmers and home- makers can turn for practical help in building more productive farms and developing better homes and communities.
