The College was founded in 1895 through the be- nevolence of Hyman Gratz, who in 1856, prior to his death, executed a deed to the "Kaal Kadosh Mickve Israel/' -of Philadelphia, in trust for the establishment and support of a college for the education of Jews re- siding in the city and county of Philadelphia. Grill Location. The College is located at the assembly rooms of the Mickve Israel Synagogue, 117 North Seventh street, Philadelphia. Object. The object of the College is to disseminate knowl- edge of the Hebrew Language, Jewish History, Jew- ♦ ish Literature and the Jewish Religion ; and espe- cially to afford training for teachers in Jewish schools. Special courses, mainly in Talmudic subjects, are given to prepare students who desire to enter the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Admission. Jews above the age of fifteen years who possess sufficient preliminary education to profit by the courses offered will be admitted as students. Those unable to pursue all the prescribed studies of the College curriculum may, at the discretion of the principal, be admitted to any of the courses offered, and shall then be known as special students. The tuition given in the College is free of charge. Subjects of Study. The full college course covers three years, and in- cludes the Hebrew Language, Bible and Mishnah; Jewish Literature — from the Biblical period to re- cent times; History of the Jews — from the Biblical period to recent times ; Pedagogics, as applied to the Jewish Religious School; History of Jewish Educa- tion. Preparatory Class. A preparatory course of one year has been estab- lished to meet the needs of those who by reason of age or lack of preparation are not able to pursue with profit the studies of the first year of the regular course. Instruction is given to the Preparatory Class in the elements of Hebrew, Biblical History, and the Jewish Religion. Collegiate Terms. The scholastic year consists of two terms. The first term extends from October to February; the second, from February to June. Written examinations are held at the close of each term. Diplomas and Certificates. Students pursuing the prescribed course of study and passing the necessary examinations will receive diplomas. Special students may at the end of the course receive certificates. Curriculum. Preparatory Class. Hebrew. — First and second terms : The elements of reading, grammar and translation, as in Mann- heimer's Hebrew Reader and Grammar, parts I-IV. Three and one-half hours. Hebrew. — First term : Grammar and exercises in translation, as in Green's Elementary Hebrew Gram- mar. Three hours. Second term : Reading narrative portions of the Bible for vocabulary and idiom. Literature. — First and second terms : Tenth century to present time : Neo-Hebraic Poetry and Literature ; Jewish Arabic Literature in Spain; Conflict between Philosophy and Tradition ; the Renaissance and Hu- manism ; Hebrew German Critics ; Mendelssohn's School; the Science of Judaism; Poetry and Belles- Lettres. Two hours. Mr. Speaker. Jewish Education. — First and second terms : From the close of the Gaonic period to the present time. One hour. Dr. Greenstone. Special Course for Teachers. A special course in pedagogics as applied to the Jewish Religious School has been established to meet the wants of those engaged in religious school work. This course is given by Dr. Julius H. Green- stone, and deals mainly with the practical problems and difficulties confronting the present-day Jewish Religious School teacher and superintendent. Discus- sions on the theory and practice of teaching as applied to the Jewish Religious School are supplemented by model lessons presented by the students and criticised in the class room. Additional sessions to discuss methods of teaching Hebrew will be given if there be demand for the same. Post-Graduate Courses. Post-graduate courses will be given to students desiring a more intimate knowledge of Jewish learn- ing. These courses will be arranged in accordance with the needs and attainments of the applicants. Scholarships. The Board of Trustees has established two annual scholarships of the value of one hundred dollars each, to be awarded to the student showing the greatest proficiency in the collegiate work of the first and sec- ond year classes respectively. The library of Gratz College contains about iooo volumes in Hebrew, English, German and French on Jewish literature and allied subjects. It is open to the public during college sessions, and instructors and students are privileged to take out books. Student Society. The Gratz College Literary Society is an organiza- tion which was established by the students of Gratz College in 1903, for the purpose of discussing matters of Jewish and general interest and promoting a spirit of fellowship among the students. Society of the Alumni. A society of the alumni of Gratz College was formed in 1904, for the purpose of advancing the interests of Gratz College and bringing its graduates in touch with the various religious schools of the city of Philadelphia. The president of the society is Miss Judith Goepp. Study Circle. The Society of the Alumni has organized a study circle to continue the study of Jewish history and literature.
