Prior to 1909 acreage and production increased steadily, as indicated in a previous "bulletin,- issued in September 1940, which covered the 1866-1938 period. The expansion in cotton acreage continued through the 1914 crop, when a total of over 36 million acres was planted. But as the "boll weevil spread eastward from Texas the period of 1915 to 1922 was one in which adjustments to this menace were neces- sary. Prom a low point of less than 30 million acres in 1921, the acreage planted to cotton increased rapidly to reach the all-time peak of nearly 46 million acres planted in 1925. In the ensuing years acreages wore reduced as a result of con- tinuing low prices and acreage allotment programs, which were in effect from 1934 to to 1943 with the exception of 1937. The low point in acreage planted to cotton was reached in 1945 when only about 17|- million acres were in cultivation on July 1, primarily as a result of labor shortages. During the 20-year period prior to 1886 about 70 percent of the cotton acreage was located east of the Mississippi River. Acreage in the West increased more rapidly than that in the East, however, until in 1911 the two portions became virtually equal. Since then the western portion has become much larger, constituting over 60 percent of the total in most years since 1922. Prom 1925 through 1946 the percentage of the acreage in the States west of the Mississippi decreased slightly. In the last few years the trend in the West has again been sharply upward. Much of the shift in cotton acreage to this region occurred as a result of increases there during the 1915 to 1924 period of relatively heavy weevil damage and favorable prices for cotton. High yields and mechanization in the western area have resulted in a comparatively large output per man-hour which pi so contributed to the shift. The yield per harvested acre of cotton showed a slight upward trend during the years 1866 to 1915, with most annual yields ranging between 160 and 200 pounds per acre. The maximum during those years was 223 pounds -in 1898. In the period of severe boll weevil infestation that followed, yields rangod much lower — from only 132 pounds in 1921 to 193 pounds in 1926. The former level was regained between 1931 and 1936. With 270 pounds in 1937 a new era of yields began, starting a sharp upward trend that reached 311 pounds per acre in 1948. In recent years the smaller acreages in cotton have resulted in a larger proportion being grown on better adapted land and on irrigated land in the West. Other factors that have raised yields are improved varieties, increased use of fertilizer, more efficient methods of culture and pest control, and the cumulative effects of soil conserving and improving, practices. Production data for each State are based upon ginnings as reported to the Bureau of the Census, with adjustments for movement of seed cotton across State lines for ginning. Acreage estimates are based upon data available from the United States 3ensuses, from performance records and other data collected in the course of Govern- ment programs, and upon reports of cooperative crop reporters. Yield benchmarks are available from the acres and bales reported to the Bureau of the Census in Census years, while crop reporters supply yield data annually. Acreage and yields are then reconciled with production to obtain consistent series of estimates of acreage and yields per acre. The values quoted for cotton and cottonseed are for the marketing season or crop year, which is from August 1 to July 31 for all States except Texas where tko marketing season is July 1 to June 30. July sales in Texas arc included with August sales at August prices. Those values, therefore, should not be confused with calendar year income. Allowances have been made for the effects of Government loans in computing seasonal prices.
