Q. 497, 2d Revision January 2, 1951 Supplement No. 1 PLANT QUARANTINE IMPORT RESTRICTIONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA RULES FOR TBE IMPORTATION OF SEED POTATOES The following information, taken from Despatch No. 959, November 17, 1950, from the Agricultural Attache in Caracas, necessitates the deletion of the words "and potatoes for seed" in Art. 9 on page 2 of B. E. P. Q. 1+97, 2d Revision. The Ministry of Agriculture by means of Resolution No. 6 of the quarantine Division published in Gaceta Oficial No. 23,360 October 23, 1950 established certain rules for the importation of seed potatoes. These read as follows: Article 1 . The importation of certified seed potatoes will be made directly by the Ministry of Agriculture or through the Banco Agricola y Pecuario. Article 2 . Seed potato imports must comply with the following conditions : (a) Each shipment must be accompanied by a certificate of origin and port of embarkation and be free of the following dieeaoes : Potato wart, Synchytrium endobioticum (Schilb.) (Perc), Bacterial ring -rot, Phytomonae sepedonica Syn. Corynebacterium sepedonicum; virus diseases in general and the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decern! ineata (Say). (b) The potatoes must be packed in crates with a division in the center, having attached to each one a label of certification issued by the official service from the place of origin aivi with the information on this label that the potatoes are certified, giving the name of the producer and the place of origin. - 2 - II 3 1262 09311 5292 (c) The weight of each potato must be from kO to 100 grama with a 5 per cent tolerance for the light weight potatoes. Article 3 . For the superficial diseases such as common scat Actinomyces scabies (Thax) or physiological diseases a five per cent tolerance will be admitted for infected potatoes. For virus diseases no tolerance will be allowed, a provision that applies also to any insects not found in Venezuela. Article h . All seed potato shipments that prove to have diseases beyond the tolerances granted in Article 3 will be rejected and cannot be landed in Venezuela even for consumption. Article 5 . Certified seed potatoes may only enter the country through the ports of La Guaira and Puerto Cabello. Article 6 . Seed potatoes may only be used as seed when they are ac- companied by certificates required by the present resolution. Article It 8, and 9 are domestic regulations.
