For ducking and large game, we think it superior to any gun in the market, and the price is within reach of all that want an everlasting gun. We have reduced our stock to the most saleable numbers, and we find that our customers are better satisfied than when we presented them with such a vari- ety of numbers—they were more liable to get confused in making out their order.-.SPECIAL NOTICE. iSgf* These instructions have reference to guns on pages 2 and 3, but are appli- cable to all grades of double or single barrel guns, whether muzzle or breech loading. The range of these guns depends on the loading more than the party shooting, and there is more deficiency in loading guns, perhaps, than any thing else; but you must bear in mind if you Avant your gun to shoot well, you must first find out what kind of a load your gun will shoot the best, and that you can only do by trying it, and when you have found that out, adopt the right measure and stick to it, and you will find that your experiment has proved satisfactory in nine cases out of ten. In ordering any shot gun, but muzzle-loading in particular, on the list, state length, size of bore, and weight. Remember that it is impossible to always fill exact dimensions, so it is best to allow lati- tude of bores at least two sizes, length of barrel two to four inches, and weight one-half to one and one-half pounds. We can always come very near the dimensions ordered, especially in the early part of the season, when our stock is very complete, and we have never failed to suit our customers; thus, for a gun the order should read from 12 to 14 bore, and 30 to 33 inches in the barrel, weight 71 to 81 pounds. In ordering guns always specify the number and price as set down in this Catalogue. We find by comparing notes with our best sportsmen and men that do a great deal of shooting, that for game of nearly all kinds, that a gun from 6} to 81 pounds weight, with barrels from 30 to 36 inches long, and bores either 11, 12, 14 or 16, are the best sizes, and well adapted for general purposes, and guns larger in the bore than No. 11, or smaller than 16 bore, are only adapted for special purposes. All guns longer than 36 inches in the barrel, and smaller than 16 bore, cost one dollar per inch extra, so that when you order guns corresponding as above plan, take a note of it. You will find a diagram of the size of the bore of shot guns on page 17, so that there is no excuse for not knowing the exact size to order. Examine pages 71 and 72 before ordering goods, and comply with it, and save trouble and expense. JAMES BOWN & SON, 1SG ,t 1S& Wood Street, TITTSS U'fttiJI,ABOUT LOADING SHOT GUNS. To load a Shot Gun is a very simple job, and almost any one of ordinary skill can put powder and shot into the barrels, and shoot the gun off; but to load a Shot Gun as it should be, to make it shoot correct and kill game, it takes more than ordinary skill, from the fact that very few of our best sporting men take the pains to ascertain how much powder and shot is a proper load for their gun, but take the gunsmith’s word for it, and perhaps he is quite as ignorant as the sportsman is himself as to the shooting qualities of his gun. Now’, the only way to find out how your gun shoots is to try it, and keep trying, until you find out to your entire satisfaction just what kind of a load or charge it requires, and then stick to it, but always use the best powder you can get, for it is the cheapest in the end. We are often asked what is a proper charge for a double gun—we say, for ordinary field, shooting on the wing, for 10 bore gun, 3i drachms powder, coarse grain duck, is the best, and If oz. shot, or 14 is preferable, and for No. 12 bore 3 drachms powder, to 1 oz. shot. If possible, use a thin card-board wad on top of your powder, then Eley’s thick felt wrad on top of the card-board, and on the top of shot use Eley’s grey or black edge, or if you choose, the pink edge. You will find by adopting this system of loading, you will make good result in shooting. For smaller bores reduce the charge in pro- portion, which the sportsman must be the judge of himself. james mm & sox, 136 & 138 Wood Street, PITTSBURGH, PA.BREECH-LOADING CENTRAL FIRE DOUBLE GUNS. Notwithstanding the fact that but a small portion of this country has been canvassed, the Parker Gun is now in the hands of practical and leading sportsmen in every State and Territory in the Union; and after having been put to the severest tests in competition with other guns of both home and foreign manufacture, it has the prefer- ence, as is shown by the increasing demand and the entire satisfaction expressed by all who are using it. From the time the Solid Breech Guns were first put in market, their success has far exceeded their most sanguine expectations, and in its present improved form the Man- ufacturer of the Parker Gun fears no competitor ! There are double the number of Parker Guns in the hands of American sportsmen than there are of any other American made breech-loader. And at the Utica Convention of the N. Y. State Sportsmen’s Association, the number of sportsmen who went to the score with the Parker Gun was equal to that of all other sportsmen who used central fire Breech-Loaders, of both American and foreign make com- bined! The Parker Guns are all made with the “snap action” movement (by snap action is meant that the locking device works au- tomatically, by simply bringing the barrels to place, thus dispensing with the extra operation of locking them, which many other breech- loaders require), and their construction is such that should the locking device fail to operate, an indicator projects above the barrels, so that the sportsman cannot get a sight across them until they are securely locked. Their guns are very simple, firm, and durable, and contain so fev springs and small parts, that they are less liable to get out of repair than any other breech-loader in the market. Aside from the springs in the locks, their guns contain only such sizes of coil springs as can be made by any one using the gun, or which would not disable the successful working of the gun were they entirely dispensed with. Malleable iron does not enter into the construction of the Parker Gun, and none but the best of wrought iron and cast steel are used in its manufacture. The Parker Gun is made to use either paper or brasscentral fire shells, as the purchaser desires, although we recommend the metal shells for the reason that they can be reloaded any number of times, thus making the Parker Breech-Loader no more expensive for ammunition (aside from the first cost of shells) than the old fash- ioned muzzle-loader. These shells are not liable to stick in the cham- bers of the gun, and for this reason certainly prove a great advantage over paper shells, particularly in wet weather; and after a thorough trial we think they give far better results at all times than the paper ones. We are often asked at what distance the Parker Gun will kill—a question which every practical sportsman knows is hard to answer. One sportsman reports killing quail at seventy and eighty yards; an- other of killing ducks at ninety yards with fine shot;—reports that no doubt are true, for every sportsman at times makes some miraculously long shots, while at other times much game is missed at very short range. All we have to say about the shooting of the Parker Gun is, that every one of their guns is thoroughly tested as to distribution and penetration before it leaves the factory, and if properly loaded and han- dled, we know they cannot fail to please any sportsman. It would be absurd for us to assert that guns could not be produced that would shoot equal to the Parker, but we do claim that no manufacturer of breech-loaders is producing the quantity of guns that shoot as uniformly well as the Parker Guns, and we are constantly receiving letters from our patrons which substantiate this claim. We are now prepared to furnish any of the guns mentioned in the list, and are willing to guarantee the Parker Guns to any and all who will favor us with their orders; for, with our experience in the sale of breech-loaders, we think we are competent to judge as to the wants of sportsmen, and if we receive with an order the general ideas of the buyer, we are confident we can fill it to his entire satis- faction. From our description, we trust you will form a favorable impression of the Parker Gun, and favor us with your order, which shall receive our prompt and careful attention. JAMES BOWN & SON, 136 & 138 Wood Street, PITTSBURGH, PA.We are now prepared to furnish our Improved Double Barreled Breech-Loading Shot Gun, which we recommend as the best ever offered the American sportsman, combining all the most desirable features of the best English Double Guns, together with some valuable improvements not found in any other. Whitmore's Paints, Aug. 1871. April 16,1872. Remington's Improved Double Barreled Breech-Loading Shot Gun. In the production of these guns no expense or trouble has been spared. An elaborate and complete set of machinery and gauges has been made, by means of which all the parts are produced exactly alike, and interchangeable, thus insuring great accuracy and uniformity in tin character of work produced, and affording great facility to the sportsman for replacing any parts that may be lost or broken. The breech mechanism is a combined positive and snap-action system. The motion of opening is by pressing upward, with the thumb against the rear end of the lever, which withdraws the locking bolt and swings up the rear end of the barrels, at the same time bringing the hammers to half cock, and automatically withdrawing the cartridge shells. The movement of the barrels is limited by a very neat device, form- ing a joint check, which takes all the wear and strain off the joint-pin, thereby entirely obviating an objection made by many to break down guns on account of the liability of the joint to get loose and shakey by use. The arrangement of the hammer and hammer lifter is such that this gun cannot be fired except when the barrels are locked. We believe this feature is not found in any other Double Breech-I.oading Gun in the market. In Axing upon tlie model of our guns, we have chosen what we think best adapted to meet the wants of the public. We cannot vary in any pa btictlar from the dimensions and weight before mentioned, or in the style of Anish. In order to suit the requirements of our different customers, we make three styles of gun, differing only in the finish and kind of barrels and stocks, which we offer at the following prices: • 136 138 lVOOD STREET, PITTSBURGH, PALength of Barrel, 28 to 30 inches. Bore, 10 to 12 gauge. WEIGHT, 8 Pounds. In order to enable us to offer a thoroughly well-made and reliable gun, at the low price of $45, we have omitted all ornamentation of either the stock or metal work, leaving both tip and butt-stock plain. The barrels are of decarbonized steel. In the next grade, selling at S60. a finer quality of timber for the stock, and twist barrels are used. The wrist of butt-stock is checked. The $75 gun has a still finer quality of barrels and the most carefully selected stocks. The wrist of butt-stock and tip are checked, and the lock-plates and portions of the breech frame are engraved. Much depends upon the wads being of good quality and proper size. We recommend the Kiev wad as being the best. For Metallic Shells a wad two sizes larger than the bore should be used. For Paper Shells a wad one size larger than the bore will answer. To remove the barrels, press up top lever, bring both hammers to full cock, take off tip stack, and the barrels can be detached. In recapping cartridges, care should be taken to have the cap befenn the base of the shelf, so that it may not be struck bv the breech piece in closing the gnn. REMINGTON'S 1101'BLE BARRELED BREECH LOADING SHOT GUN. In all those guns only the best materials and workmanship are employed. The locks and breech system are the same in the several grades, and the same care is bestowed uj>on the boring and finishing of the barrels. In the construction of our barrels we have adopted an improved system of boring, so that we can Warrant all our Guns to shoot thick, even, and tnth great force. Plain Walnut Stork. J-^AIVIES JBO^KTlSr Sc SOW, MANUFACTURERS OF THEIR Celebrated Kentucky Rifles, The Cheapest and Best Rifles in the World for the money, which have been the Hunter’s Pride for over 28 years, and have never failed to give entire satisfaction, We have just added a most important feature to the manufacture •of our Rifles, that is, the manufacture of our own Rifle Barrels, which is so very important to a good Rifle. We are now prepared to turn out the best Rifles for the money in the country. Knowing the importance of having good, straight bar- rels in the manufacture of good Sporting Rifles, we are satisfied that our Rifles will prove superior to any other Rifle manufactured in the country. We are the only manufacturers of the celebrated Kentucky Rifles west of the mountains that have a regular factory for making these goods with system. Having been engaged in the manufacture of Rifles since 1852, we feel warranted in calling your attention to our prices at the present time, feeling sure that they are as low as any good Rifle can be manu- factured. Our Rifles have obtained a reputation in the South and West that no other make has ever obtained, and we intend to keep up that reputation by still improving on the style and workmanship. We employ none but the best workmen, and have changed our styles to the plainest and most approved patterns, and we defy competition as to quality aud price. Every Rifle is tested before sending it out, so that we know just what it will do, aud as a guarantee for what we say, we will refund the money in any case where one of our Rifles fails to do as above stated. JAMES BOWN & SON, 136 Si 138 Wood Street, TITTST UTOII, TA. The Test is always the Cheapest, and gives the best satisfaction in the end. If it does cost a little move at the start, it is always the cheapest in the end. “Quick Sales and Small Profits.’' has been our Motto for over a quar- ter of a Century. We do not make any gECOND-CLASS Rifles; we consider that all Rifles ought to be made first-class, and we have adopted this plan ever since we com- menced the manufacture of the same; the only difference we make is in the mounting and outside appearance, the inside of our Rifles are all smooth and cor- rect. We manufacture our barrels, locks, and triggers, consequently we know just what kind of material is in them. THE ABOVE CUT REPRESENTS OUR No. 1 PULL STOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. No. 1. Any good, smart, active young man ought to sell from four to eight in a day, when the coun- try is overrun with robbers and plunderers. Every family ought to have some kind of firearms in their houses for their own protection, and when the male members are absent from home, as is often the ease, they ought to leave a revolver at home with their wives and children for protection. How many robberies and murders are committed in houses where they have nothing in the shape of a revolver, when if they had one of our pistols, and fired one shot, it would so alarm the ras- > cals that they would soon leave from fear of l)eing shot themselves, and in all probability save the lives of the whole family, and we will guarantee that our No. 1 Enterprise Revolver will put a bullet through an inch board, at twenty feet, every shot. There are hun- dreds of people of all classes who would readily buy a revolver if they were certain of getting the worth of their money. JAMES BOWN & SON Pittsburgh, Pa,: Please send by Express C. O. I), the following goods, selected from your Catalogue, 1876: PAGE. NO. QUANTITY. ARTICLES. PRICE. Any matter in way of inquiry or explanation should be written on a separate sheet, or on opposite side, to avoid confusion and error. Bear in mind we pay no express charges, so that when you order goods by Ex- press. C. O. D., you must pay all charges for the freight on the goods, and the re- turn of the money, and if you cannot comply with this rule, do not order the goods. We will not send goods further west than Kansas City, or further south than New Orleans C. O. D., unless one-half of the amount accompanies the order. We are compelled to adopt this rule for our own protection. ' Jfe?” Be particular in writing your orders plain and distinct, and by all means sign your name so that it can be made out without the use of a MAGNI- FYING GLASS.HOW TO ORDER GOODS. The most important feature in ordering Goods is to examine this Catalogue carefully, and ascertain what you want; and be careful, if you order by number, to see-that you have the right number, and if by description, say which page of this Catalogue it is on, so as to prevent mistakes, and do not take out the leaves of the Catalogue, for you may want to order the same goods at some future day, and your Catalogue would be destroyed. If we should not have the goods on hand, or cannot get them, we will notify our customers of the same by return mail to.that effect, and inform him how near we can fill his order; therefore you will see the necessity of ordering as directed. We will send goods to any Express office in the United States, marked “ C. O. D.” except West of Kansas City, and South of New Orleans, with bill to collect on delivery of the goods, and with instructions to the Express Agent to allow the goods to be examined before they are paid for; provided that freight charges are paid both ways, in case the goods are refused. But in no case can we allow goods to be taken from the office before the bill is paid; if so, the Express Agent will be responsible for all damages that may have been done to the goods. If a Gun or Rifle, but more especially Shot Guns, do not shoot satisfactorily, we will exchange it for another, if returned free of any expense to us, or for other goods, if desired. N. B.—Our Celebrated Kentucky liijte, we make every one to shoot correct, for every one is properly adjusted before leaving our Factory, and we manufacture the barrels ourselves. We are the only parties west of the mountains that man- ufacture their own Rifle and Gun Barrels; consequently we have advantages over those who use common Barrels and make second-class Rifles. All our Rifles are first-class and warranted as such. Terms of Sale Strictly Cast. We do an exclusive Cash business, therefore it is unnecessary for parties to write to us for Credit, for it will not be given ; it makes no difference as to their pecuniary strength, our Terms are Cash, and by selling our goods for Cash we can afford to sell a better class of goods for less money than those who sell on time. All bills sent “ C. O. D.,” that is, to be paid to the Express Agent at the Express office where parties reside, are subject to additional charges for the return of money. This the Express Agent adds upon the bill, and must collect from the party ordering the goods before delivering the same. Tins is a matter over which we have no control, and cannot regulate. The only way to avoid this charge is to remit us the money with the order. We will not send any goods C. O. D- that does not amount to $10.00; we have adopted this rule only because the trouble of making out smaller C. O. D. packages, and keeping track of them, would in most cases cost us more than all the profit we would make. Examine pages 71 and 72 before ordering goods.TERMS TO CLUBS AND AGENTS. Discount allowed only on guns and rifles, and no discount will be allowed for an order for a single gun ; to parties ordering three guns at one time to the same address, and remitting one-half the amount, we will allow a discount of ton per cent., except Remington's and Parker’s Breech-Loaders. To parties ordering six guns at one time to the same address, and remitting us one-half of the amount, we will allow a discount of 15 per cent. No greater discount will he allowed for any number or under any circum- stances. We recommend our customers to remit us the amount when they order the goods, either by post office order or registered letter, or Bank Cashier's Draft; it saves the parties expense and trouble, and there is no excuse for not knowing how much to remit, for the price of every article is printed in plain figures, and as we have been in the same stores for 28 years, it ought to he somewhat of a guarantee of our fair dealing. We guarantee all our goods to he just what they are represented. No matter how they are sent, if we have not got just what is ordered,'we write for instruc- tions, ami say how near we can fill the order. You may ask the question: What security have I that my orders will he filled to the letter, when I pay my money before I get ipy goods ? Examine Pages 71 & 72 Before Ordering Goods. Iu getting up this Illustrated Catalogue of Sporting Goods, we have endeavored to make it as complete as practicable. We have in- serted nothing in it but what we can furnish in a very short time after receiving the order, and if our customers will examine it carefully, they will find a general assortment of Sporting Goods, suitable to any part of the Country. It is our aim to keep a well-selected stock of goods on hand at all times; and we can safely say that no house iu the city keeps a better selected stock of Sporting Goods, all through, than can be found at our establishment, and we wish to impress on the minds of our customers that it is their interest we are working for, and our desire to give them satisfaction; and, had we the space to spare, we could fill this entire Catalogue with letters from our cus- tomers, who have indorsed us for over a quarter of a century, but we are desirous of presenting a Catalogue of Information to those wanting our goods, therefore, every page contains more or less information for parties wanting FIRE ARMS AND SPORTING GOODS in general, and if, in ordering goods from us, they will follow our instructions, we will guarantee satisfaction every time. The facilities for getting goods nowadays are so complete that there is very little trouble to get just what you order, cither by mail or express. Under the new postal law it has proven of great benefit, and our customers are beginning to appreciate it, when you can have almost any thing you want in this Catalogue sent by mail, except Rifles and Shot Guns, nearly every other article, if not too bulky. All packages by mail are limited to four pounds weight, and fourteen ’itches long, consequently this postal regulation will prove of great benefit to persons living off the lines of railroads, and small packages can be sent much cheaper by mail than by express, and near about as safe. Hoping that the information given will be appreciated, and that our customers will order freely from us, We are, yours respectfully, JAMES BOWN ■ [SIGN OF GOLDEN GUN.] & Pistols, 136 &■ 138Wood Street.
