This Association was organized Nov. 28th, 1866, under the name of the " South Reading Co-operative Association," in accordance with an Act of the legislature of Massachusetts, approved May 30th, 1866, entitled, "An Act in relation to the fonning of Co-operative Associations." The following is a copy of the articles of agreement : — " "We, the undersigned, agree to fonn ourselves into an Associa- tion, agreeably to the law passed by the legislature of Massachu- setts, and approved May 30th, 1866, entitled, 'An Act in relation to the formation of Co-operative Associations.' The Association to be located in South Reading, Massachusetts, for the pui-pose of trading in groceries, provisions, wood and coal, clothing, diy goods, boots and shoes, and all such other goods as may come under the head of the necessaries of life. The capital stock shall be one thousand dollars, to be divided into two hundred shares of five dollars each, and for the furtherance of the above objects, we agree to be governed by the by-laws." At a legal notified meeting of the Association, held April 23d, 1867, the Association voted to increase the number of shares one hundred, making the capital stock $1,500. At a legally notified meeting of the Association, held Oct. 12th, 1867, the Association voted to increase the number of shares one hundred and forty, making the capital stock $2,200. On the 1st day of November, 1868, the total assets and property of the Association were : — Cash on hand, $33 35 The total liabilities and debts due from the Association were, $602.41. There is a small amount of debts due the Association, but they are of no appreciable value, and cannot be estimated therefore in the assets and property.
