In 1989 it also subsumed the Specialized Bibliography Series. Each bibliography in the new series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE, AVLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, CANCERLIT, CATLINE, HEALTH, POPLINE, AND TOXLINE. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material is not considered. Comments and suggestions on this series may be addressed to: Karen Patrias, Editor Current Bibliographies in Medicine Reference Section National Library of Medicine Bethesda, MD 20894 301/496-6097 Ordering Information: Current Bibliographies in Medicine is sold by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. To order the entire CBM series for calendar year 1989 (20 bibliographies), send $47.00 ($58.75 foreign) to the Superintendent of Documents citing GPO List ID: CBM89. To subscribe for 1990, send $52.00 ($65.00 foreign) citing GPO List ID: CBM90. For your convenience an order blank is given inside the back cover. Orders for individual bibliographies in the series ($2.50, $3.00 foreign) should be sent to the Superintendent of Documents citing the title and the GPO Stock No. printed on the title page. Use of funds for printing this periodical has been approved by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget through September 30, 1990. ''NOISE AND HEARING LOSS There are approximately 28 million people in the United States with impaired hearing. In many instances, exposure to occupational and recreational noise has caused irreversible damage to the inner ear. Daily, people are exposed to hazardous levels of noise on their jobs, including firefighters, military personnel, disc jockeys, construction workers, musicians, farmers, industrial arts teachers, factory workers, as well as taxicab, truck, and bus drivers to name a few. Exposure to live or recorded high-volume music, recreational vehicles, airports, heavy traffic, lawn mowers, household appliances, chain saws, and power tools are all sources of potentially damaging noise. During the last decade, significant progress has been made in understanding the effects of noise on the inner ear, but important questions remain unsolved. Among these are what specific types and levels of sound can damage hearing and what factors determine an individual’s susceptibility to noise-related hearing loss. This bibliography was prepared in support of the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference titled "Noise and Hearing Loss" held in Bethesda, Maryland on January 22-24, 1990. The purpose of the conference was to examine what is known of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and pathophysiology of noise-induced hearing loss as well as its prevention and management. Attenders and presenters included biomedical and behavioral scientists, health care providers, and the public. The bibliography consists primarily of journal articles, dissertations, conference papers, and monographs in all languages from January 1985 through December 1989. However, citations from 1985 are selective, reflecting currency of research and interest. Topics addressed included the characteristics of noise-related hearing loss, acoustic parameters of hazardous noise exposure, individual and age-specific susceptibility, and prevention strategies. Both human and animal studies were included. Arrangement of the bibliography is by six subject categories which parallel the organization of the Consensus Conference. The first category, Overview, includes general articles dealing with the prevalence and severity of the problem, and economic issues. The second category is Characteristics of Noise-Related Hearing Loss, including biological and physiopathological bases and clinical criteria. Areas of functional significance, such as the quality of life, tinnitus, impairment, quantification of disability, and the interaction between hearing loss and the environment, are included here also. The third category is Acoustic Parameters of Hazardous Noise Exposure, including the intensity, frequency, and duration of noise exposure, the effects of impulse/impact noise compared to continuous noise, the assessment of risk, and the types of noise exposure, occupational and recreational. The fourth category is Individual Susceptibility, dealing with factors affecting noise- related hearing loss. This includes non-auditory factors such as gender, smoking, race, genetics; auditory factors such as hearing aids, acoustic reflex, or a pre-existing hearing loss; and interactions between noise and other agents (ototoxics, medications, vibration, heat, industrial solvents, etc.). The fifth category is Age-Specific Vulnerability, including pre-natal risks, noise exposure in adolescents and young adults, and in the aged. The sixth and final category deals with Prevention Strategies, including education in the schools and for the public; legislative and regulatory issues; ear protective devices; and noise control efforts, such as the engineering or design of machinery. Individual citations may be listed more than once, in appropriate categories. ''SEARCH STRATEGY A variety of online databases are usually searched in preparing bibliographies in the CBM series. To assist you in updating or otherwise manipulating the material in this search, the strategy used for the NLM’s MEDLINE database is given below. Please note that the search strategies presented here differ from individual demand searches in that they are generally broadly formulated and irrelevant citations edited out prior to printing. This software was specifically developed for health professionals and features multiple choice menus and "fill in the blank" screens for easy search preparation. GRATEFUL MED runs on an IBM PC (or IBM-compatible) with DOS 2.0 or a Macintosh, and a Hayes (or Hayes-compatible) modem. It may be purchased from the National Technical Information Service in Springfield, Virginia, for $29.95 (plus $3.00 per order for shipping). For your convenience, an order blank has been enclosed at the back of this bibliography. ''SAMPLE CITATIONS Citations in this bibliographic series are formatted according to the rules established for Index Medicus. Sample journal and monograph citations appear below. For journal articles written in a foreign language, the English translation of the title is placed in brackets; for monographs, the title is given in the original language. In both cases the language of publication is shown by a three letter abbreviation appearing at the end of the citation. Note also that a colon (:) may appear within an author’s name or article title. The NLM computer system automatically inserts this symbol in the place of a diacritical mark. Journal Article: Authors Article Title oN / Abel SM ; Rokas D.
