This List has been compiled for several reasons, but chiefly to serve as a catalogue of the Exhibition of Current Magazines held at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 29th August — 2nd September, 1904, in connection with the Annual Meeting of the Library Associa- tion. Its permanent purpose will be to supply Library Com- mittees and Librarians with a suggestive list of many of the world's leading magazines, which may aid in securing for libraries a representative and cosmopolitan selection of periodical pub- lications. In connection with the permanent collection of examples of magazines preserved in London and elsewhere, it is hoped that Librarians who are engaged in the task of choosing selections of good magazines may be enabled to do so more thoroughly if they have a handy list to guide them, and a selection of copies of the actual publications which can be examined. Apart from the Lists of Periodicals and Serials issued by individual libraries like Boston (Mass.), Providence, etc., and the " Union " Catalogues of Periodicals compiled for various towns, such as Manchester, Chicago and Evanston, etc., I am not aware that anything of a similar kind has been issued before. This List must, therefore, be expected to suffer from the many defects of a pioneer work, somewhat hastily compiled, and this edition should be considered as " under revision ". The utility of a List of this kind from the Librarian's point of view is un- questionable, and judging by numerous requests which have been addressed to myself, I should think that the need for a brief but comprehensive guide was very general. I have done everything I could to procure trustworthy lists of the best and most representative periodicals of every country, and I have to thank many Librarians and others for their helpful co-operation, without which it would have been impossible to procure materials for the purpose. The List is restricted to current magazines on most of the leading subjects of human knowledge, but newspapers, and periodicals devoted solely to Sects, Politics, or Sport and minor trades and professions have been omitted. The reasons for this are quite obvious. To attempt to cover the whole field would be presumptuous, while the inclusion of purely controversial • vi PREFACE. periodical literature in public libraries is undesirable, unless for special reasons.
