See our Exhibit Location Given on Page 20 TWO Your Priggen Garage or Building will Look the same a Generation from Now HEN you see your first Priggen Steel Garage you will realize that there is indeed a vast difference in the appear¬ ance of steel garages. Ten or twenty years hence you will discover that this difference is based not on design and finish alone, but on the sturdiness of construction and the high-grade materials used throughout. Your neighbor’s steel garage, of another and perhaps more expensive make, will not hold up as yours has, if it is not designed and built as the Priggen is, to last a lifetime — and longer. Construction Features The Priggen Steel Buildings are designed by trained engineers who, through experiment and study, have produced a building which surpasses all others on the market for scientific sturdiness of construction, both interior and exterior. All frame work is of angle iron, joined together by other angles. These are built in such a way as to lock all connections tightly, insuring maximum strength in every part of the structure. The roof support is a distinctive Priggen feature. Properly braced trusses absolutely prevent sagging under any condition of weather. No sagging means no leak-causing strain. The result is a weather-tight roof — at all times. No prospective purchaser of a garage or building should overlook this feature. Atmospheric conditions have no effect on this durable metal which is recommended by mechanical engineers the country over. The selection of this excellent steel is in line with the Priggen policy to produce for you the finest steel garage available, one that will be comparable in appearance and service with a well-made wood or cement garage, at only a fraction of the cost. (the ^ Smoky City), by the American Society for Testing Mate¬ os rials, the purpose being to determine, through a test ex¬ tending over a period of years, which metal would stand atmospheric conditions the best. Practically every sheet metal manufacturer submitted sheets for this impartial test, made in a city where, on account of many blast furnaces, the air is full of smoke and gases, making this city an excellent place in which to give sheet metals the severest test. This test was made with BLACK SHEETS, before galvanizing, the sheets being placed on frames out-of-doors and exposed to atmospheric conditions the same as any building. The idea was to show how the base (black sheets) would stand up if the galvanizing should wear off in after years. Galvanizing is what prolongs the life of sheet metal, and galvanized is what we use. The results of this test, as shown by above diagram, proved conclusively the superiority of Bessemer Keystone Copper Steel. Note that the Bessemer Keystone Copper Steel Sheets stood up ioo%, not only in test above covering a 64 months’ period, but also in the latter test, shown on opposite chart, covering 75 months. TWENTY-NINE Number of Months EIxposure Fire Test N June 3, iqib (a warm day with no breeze) the engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Standards set fire to a two-car Sheet Steel garage (Fig. i) erected on the government testing grounds in Washington, D. C. Note: This garage had already passed through an identical fire test on May iq, iq26. Near the garage, 3' to the left, was built a test wall of yellow pine studs, sheathing and old pitch pine siding. At the rear, showing over the top of the garage, 5' away, was another wall of similar materials, more combustible than used in average construction. Inside the garage, as shown in Fig. i, were two automobiles, gas tanks partly filled, gas and oil cans on the work bench nearby, a barrel of excelsior and a wall cabinet full of papers. Thin lumber was piled on the roof truss bracing (the usual place for window screens) and the familiar lum¬ ber pile on the floor. One thousand pounds of wood, oil and i 7 gallons of gas in addition to the two cars made up the list of combustibles. A train of oil was poured across boards from under the carburetor of the right-hand car to the gas tank of the left-hand car. One door was blocked open 18" to supply an air draft. Gasoline in the carburetor of the car on the right was then ignited. The interior was soon a mass of red flames which lasted for over 4 hours and the temperature rose to i33q°F. The aluminum crank cases and the glass melted into puddles on the floor. The gas tanks did not explode. When examined on the next morn¬ ing, the cars and all burnable material were reduced to scrap metal and ashes (see Fig. 2) but the Sheet Steel garage itself was again undamaged (see Fig. 3) except for small cracks in the wire glass windows. The side wood wall, 3' away, did not catch fire until 64 minutes had passed. After which, at intervals during the next 30 minutes, there started small blazes which one person could easily control with a kitchen dipper. The rear wood wall 5' away did not ignite at all. During this fire test, the doors of the small one-car garage adjoining (Fig. 4) were closed tightly. The temperature inside the Ford car in the garage rose only 12° F. and the temperature of its gas tank only 3°F. Not only was the garage itself absolutely unharmed but the oil-soaked rags on the bench and those hanging on the Sheet Steet wall nearest the burning garage showed not the slightest trace of smoke. This rigid government test demonstrates beyond question, not merely for garages but for any type of modern building, the power of Sheet Steel to throw off excessive quantities of heat into the atmosphere at a relatively low and safe temperature, thereby reducing the fire spread hazard to a minimum. THIRTY Testimonials Pricgen Steel Garage Co., 375 Broadway, Boston, Mass. Dear Sirs: I should like to express my appreciation of the work done by you in the construction of my new garage for Hotel Pilgrim, Plymouth. I have had a great deal of favorable comment on the garage from my guests, many of them telling me that it was the best Summer Hotel garage they had ever seen. I admit that at first I was a little skeptical as to the merits of an all-steel building for this purpxise, but I am thoroughly converted, and think it will be but a short time before I ask you to double the size of it. I may say that the cost of the garage was about fifty per cent less than any other type of construction which I could have used. Yours very truly, P. F. Brine, Manager. Pricgen Steel Garacie Co.. The construction is such, with enforced roof trusses, etc., that any one can feel secure that no weight of snow or ice on roof can have any ill effects on ridge, causing a sag as some have.
