In all inodeni houses much of the attractiveness and eftect of the first im- pression depends upon the stairs and stairways, and they are justly considered the chief ornaments of the interior structure. It is therefore of prime import- ance that the stairs should be built on correct principles, tastefully and scien- tifically All architects and competent builders recognize this fact. In this department we have facilities for doing work or furnishing supplies unequalled by any house in the state. We give estimates for anything in this line, or furnish any or all material necessary for stair work. We not only sup- ply the trade with Tine, Walnut, Oak, Mahogany, Cherry, Straight Rail and Baluster, but furnish any description of Eases and Wreaths required, so that 2002 ^ 2004 Market Street, Philadelphia. 55 an ordinary mechanic can have stairs shipped to any part of the country, made ready t© put up at moderate cost. Our stock of stair material always on hand is complete, and embraces every thing in the stair building line, from the plainest Baluster to the most elaborate Newel Post. \Ye execute the most elaborate designs furnished by architects, and fill all orders from detail drawing in a manner warranted to satisfy the most critical. We are prepared at all times to erect stairs of any style or description in the city or country, in a workmanlike manner. This department is in charge of Mr. W. H. Lodge, the well-known author of the popular work ^‘•Science of Stair Building f who gives his personal atten- tion to all orders entrusted to us. In ordering stairs, be particular to give the height of story from floor to floor ; width of joist in second and third floors ; width and rise of stairs, and size of cylinder, with sketch showing the position of rises in cylinder ; the ivum her and size of rise and tread, as cut on rough horse. Orders for railing worked for straight stairs should give the rise and tread as sawed out on rough horse ; the number of rises ; the size of cylinder ; which way it turns on landing, and length of straight rail on stair and on level. Always measure from the spring of cylinder. For winding stairs we should have an exact plan, showing location of rises in cylinder. |^”All Work Guaranteed to give Satisfaction. Its adaptability to mantel purposes is unquestionable, it being six times stronger than marble, and not so easily broken or affected by heat. It will not discolor from gases arising from coal or wood fire, or stains from oil, grease or other substances. The enamelling embraces in patterns all known marbles, both foreign and domestic, and executed in a manner to challenge the most competent judges in detecting the imitation from the real marble. The following are a few of the most pleasing colors in use : — EGYPTIAN, SPANISH, VERDANTIQUE, SIENNA, BROCATELLE, LISBON, TENNESSEE, PORPHYRY, SCOTCH GRANITE, MALACHITE, LAPIS LAZULA. &c., &c. 64 Barber ^ Henderson. Always Read what will Pay the Reading. So Carefully Read the Following : — In presenting our Annual Catalogue to our customers and friends, we wish to call their attention to a few points setting forth plainly why we are enabled to sell all of our goods less than any other house in Philadelphia: — Ist. We have our own Factory, and make our own Doors, Sash, Blinds, Mouldings, and everything pertaining to wood work ; therefore, ask that our Factory and w'holesale rooms have but one profit between them. Here is at least 10 per cent, saved. 2d. Again, instead of having each of our different departments in separate stores, requiring separate Rent Account, Clerk Account, Bookkeepers, &c., we combine the five different departments under one roof, saving at least $ 10,000 a year, which amount we can give to our customers and yet not impoverish ourselves, as it is only giving them what we save by our present systematic reducing of expenses. We manufacture all our Slate and Marble Mantels in the same building, sav- ing again Factory rent. Row then, -we ask the thoughtful builder, or capitalist wishing to build, Can any establishment sell as low as we can? Each of our extensive departments is managed by a thorough, practical man, w’ho is interested in bis department, and very wmll knows his future success depends entirely upon his pleasing his customers, and doing to customers just what he promises, ensuring the friendship of every customer because he makes it their interest to be friendly ; so every customer says to his neighbor: — Always go to Nos. 2002 and 2004 Market Street, FOR YOUR BUILDING STONE, Lumber, Mill W^ork, Hardware, SLATE AND MARBLE MANTELS, SLA^TE, TIIN AISTE OEAVEE EOOFESTG, Yes, everything wanted for building. This establishment is selling more goods than any three houses in Philadel- phia, and WHY ? Because their goods are better and cheaper. And you can get goods PROMPTLY, and of the best quality in the city — much better than City Mill work, for they have no kilns to dry their doors. cc..... r*i k ,.;y oiilVifilTi F-A-CTOI^ir : P. M.
