Set up wall plates, the distance of this length, temporarily. If Mantel has a fire-board, lav the lire- hoard against the wall so that it can he brought up to its proper position at the iiroiier ime. If Mantel is circular in design, take fronts and put them up so that they touch in the centre; show wall plates equally. Plumb and level fronts, and mark on wall where clamp holes should he cut— opposite clamp hole in the Mantel. Now mark on floor around fronts and wall plates, to cut floor by. Lay fronts and wall plates aside and cut the floor from one-quarter inch to a greater depth on one side or the other, according to he amount the floor may be out of level. Cut holes in the chimnev to anchor Mantel too; If a stud partition, prepare a .solid arrangement in wood work for anchoring. 1 lace wall plates and fronts in the floor, plumb and level, and attach clamp wires Now wedge on centre or keystone; wet the wall alongside the inside of wall plate ami II here front joins wall plate, ako, holes in wall and around centre. This will tend to hold plaster better than when dry. Prepare a bowl of calcined plaster and use on parts alrcadv wet, and any other places judged advisable. If fire-board is to be used, bring it up to a poll joint at back of fronts and secure it by sticks from wall or a wedge brick— enoimh to keep It nrm. If a grate or .stove is to be used, the space between Mantel and ivall must be filled in with solid brickwork or masonry, arouml and above the stove or grate Dampen the wall where the top-strip will lay, also, dampen the top-strii). Place a little plaster on the top of fronts and on back of top-strip, set the shelf on and lav top-.strip of t'heVpinte^*^™^^’ ^ require filling, do it with putty made to the shade In cleaning Mantels wash with sponge and water and drv with damp chamois skin 1 . Mantel is not what is generally known as “circular,”' but is “sfiuare,” set wall plates as before; then set fronts at proper distance from each other as determined by ^ngth of frieze. JSow see that fronts are on the same line, top and bottom, with each other x^roceed as belore.
