ABERTHAW CONSTRUCTION C° 8 BEACON STREET. BOSTON CONCRETE ENGINEERS Cr CONTRACTORS FOR CONCRETE MASONRY OF ALL KINDS MEMBER MASTER BUILDERS’ ASSOCIATION Circular No. ^ ORESEEING the tendency of the times, and complying with an already active de- mand for a high-grade building stone at a reasonable price, we have started a shop for casting Portland cement concrete. We can cast stone as light colored as Berea limestone or gray sandstone, at the same time so closely copying its texture and finish as to deceive an expert. W e can also copy red or brown sandstone with equal exactness. Bluestone and slate can be very easily matched in color. Our composite granite is worthy of careful con- sideration. ********* RCHITECTS have found concrete to be the most satisfactory of building material where strength, durability, or fireproof qualities have been the governing considerations. Its appearance alone has prevented its general use as a facing for the walls of buildings. Aberthaw cast stone, while retaining all the merits of concrete, has in addition the handsome appearance of natural stone. It is made by a patented process, whereby the stone is indurated with chemicals when cast, changing the struct- ure and correcting the imperfections which have previously been objectionable. Efflorescence is entirely overcome by the chemical treatment used. This stone is much less porous than Indiana limestone and, therefore, it does not stain or mold green. W hen necessary, the stone is re-enforced with em- bedded twisted steel, and then possesses all the merits of concrete-steel construction. *¥**¥**+* E do not use wooden or rigid molds of any type. Owing to swelling and warping when wet, wooden molds are likely to give rough and irregular castings. In any case, when the mortar or concrete contains sufficient water for strong results, it flushes to the surface and gives a flat, uninteresting appearance. Below this the concrete is likely to be uneven and full of air cells. If the molds are not very tight, the mortar will run out of the cracks, showing a line and mak- ing a rough streak in the stone. This is especially likely to occur at the corners, and thus weaken the casting where it most needs strength. In order to use the molds over again, as soon as pos- sible, concrete packed in rigid molds is usually mixed very dry, — too dry to obtain full strength from the cement. E use chemically treated porous molds and mix the concrete very wet. The difference in results has already been pointed out. 3 USES for ABERTHAW CAST STONE Window and door-sills and lintels, either plain or ornamental. Ashlar. Smooth, tooled, or rock faced. Looks like stone. Does not warp. Made more quickly. Made in Boston. Uniform and regular in size. In case of damage, more easily and quickly replaced. ********* Reasons why ordinary concrete is not com- monly used for building stone Flat, uninteresting color. Not uniform in texture or color. Mortar stains often give irregular color. Mortar stains not always permanent in color. It effloresces or stains white. Sharp detail impossible. Coarse texture. Cutting of stone gives porous surface. It cannot be carved. 6 Smooth or rock faced, plain or carved, straight or curved work can be readily produced. > TJ > X H Z m z H X O m c m (/) H m S 2 J> O (/) o X * O J> • X 7 PROPERTIES OF ABERTHAW CAST STONE Color can be varied from that of light marble to that of slate. Texture close grained and compact. Texture and color uniform. Color varied by change of aggregate; hence color as fast as that of natural stone. It is not stained by cement mortar. Chemically treated to prevent efflorescence and to increase hardness. It never molds nor turns green. Grows harder with time. It is waterproof. Stone being uniformly hard throughout, can be cut or carved like natural stone. Small detail can be reproduced perfectly. All stones are exact size, therefore they are easily set with- out fitting. 8 Cast stone is a worthy ornament for the most important and beautiful of buildings. 9 Speiden C* 3 Speiden , Architects.
