When in 1845, we entered the Ministry of the Secession Church of Holland, (from whence we were called in 1851, to America), our Alpha was to preach the Gospel to Jew and Gentile; we advocated the establish¬ ment of a Missionary Society in our Congregation in behalf of the heathen and the Jews. In 1864, we commenced in the city of New York, A Mission to the Jews, a work of love and faith, and were as Missionary, and also as Secretary of our Society for twelve years, daily seeking the spiritual welfare of the Jews. Remembering that period, our heart feels joyful to mention: How willingly our “ now departed " dearly beloved wife, Mrs. Agnes J. I. Tris, (who died recently, August 3rd, 1895), was to go with us, and our three small children to the city of New York, ' ill which we were all strangers ” She was not only a true helpmate, counselor and sweet companion showing great patience, love and self-sacrifice in many trials of faith and hard¬ ships in that ti'ying mission to Israel; She was also one, who by her Christian example drew the admiration of the Jews as loving them for their father’s sake, and truly “we never could have accomplished that mission, without her arduous labor." In commemoration of this, and our happy union of nearly thirty-nine years , we write this Memorial, giving: God and the Lamb the glory, for ever and ever, Amen and Amen, Selah, which were some of the last words of our beloved one-and now, to be in the presence of her beloved Savior must be a joy unspeak¬ ably; and, to adore Him, as the God-man, the son of Abraham must thrill the deepest recesses of oil “'the spirits of just men made perfect Truly, her crown bought by Jesus will willingly be laid at his feet. And now, this tract, our Omega, as a golden clasp is fastening all our life work, spoken and published about Israel, “the Jews,” and of the personal and glorious coming of Jesus, as the king of Israel. We set solemnly OUR SEAL TO IT FOREVER, as being THE ONLY REVEALED truth of the Triune God. Amen. Wes /lfcotnes, Uowa, ©etober, 1895. A. C. TRIS. Vindications DIALOGUE. Doubter. Good morning, my dear brother in Christ, your subject announced is a most interesting one, yet you know I disagree entirely with your literal explanation of the prophecies. It is my sincere belief: That the prophe¬ cies speak of and mean the present Christian Church; that the Jews never , as a nation, will return to Canaan; and that Christ will never be their King in Jerusalem. Minister. Let us reason together in all kindness and candor, and pray for the annointing of the Holy Spirit “to guide us in all truth, and to show us things to come.” John 16:13. Doubter. Please produce your outward proofs , your inward proofs, and your -Scriptural proofs: That the .Tews must be restored as a nation to their old homestead, and that our blessed Lord Jesus will be King over them. M. The outward proofs are many: THEOCRACY. Our first argument is: That there can be no failure in anything that Jehovah has established, to manifest His own glory. The Lord established over Israel and Canaan “His Theocracy” for 900 years. He made Palestine the superior power on earth, ruling there as the Supreme and making it: “The cradle of true religion.” His indwelling, Shekinah, was there, manifested in the Tabernacle and in the Temple, and He declared that Israel was “His firstborn’’ among the nations. Exod. 4:22. Since Is¬ rael’s dispersion and captivity, Nebuchadnezzar and the four world-dominions and kingdoms, the heathen nations “the Beasts” were substituted in the place of Israel. Jer. 27:6, 8, 9; Dan. 2:31; so that the Christ of God, “ the promised seed ,” was born in Bethlehem, under the rule of the Roman government , Luke 2:1. The promise given in Gen. 49:10 declares emphatically: “When Shiloh shall come, that, unto Him the gathering of the people shall — 4 — be.’ This has never yet been fulfilled: “The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David” Rev. 5:4 has never yet taken the reign as “King of Nations” Rev. 19:16, “in “Mount Zion from henceforth even for ever.” Micah 4:7. It has not happened, Mich. 4:8, “That the first (chief) dominion, the kingdom has come to the daughter of Jeru¬ salem.” The declaration of the archangel Gabriel, Luke 1 -.32, 33, “That the Lord God shall give unto Him (Jesus), the throne of his father David, and that He shall reigu over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end” is also not yet fulfilled. The Chris¬ tian church is not a kingdom, is not the house of Jacob, and consequently: The King, the people and the land are all Jewish subjects; Christ, the Jews, and Canaan, are so closely united in one, that it is like a threefold cord that no power on earth ever shall be able to cut or destroy. The Jews, now set aside for a short time Isa. 54:7, shall not only be reinstated as a nation, but permanently live under a more glorious Theocracy, under the rule of their eldest brother, “their own Joseph’’— having the domin¬ ion of the earth, Ps. 72:8, and then it will be seen that there is no failure in God’s rule, and that the second Adam is also the beloved David promised in Hosea 3:5, “whose rule shall be everlasting,” Isa. 9:7; 11:1-10. PROGENITURE. Our second argument is: That the progeniture of the eldest son is an established fact in the Orient. Abraham is called in Gen. 17:5 “a father of many nations.” In Abraham comes the Jew, the Christian, the Moslem, yea, the infidel as in a centre—a wonderful phenomenon not to be found elsewhere on the globe—of a conglomeration of nations calling one man their father, “as a Father of nations , thus literally fulfilling the change of name, which Jehovah made now 4,000 years ago. Isaac, the son of promise, the only son of the legitimate mother, Sarah, was declared by the Most High God to be the heir of Abraham, his father, Gen. 21:7, and consequently the property of Abraham was not Ishmael’s (the son of the bond-woman, the progenitor of the Moslems), it was belonging to Isaac; and, the property being an estate in expectancy, Acts 7:5, Heb. 11:9-13, the title deed in fee — 5 — simple , constituted Isaac as the bonajlde owner of Pales¬ tine, and this title deed was recorded in heaven and acknowledged by Jehovah’s Covenaut, Oath and Promise to a thousand generations, Ps. 105:8-11. There is no law or power in the Universe which can abrogate or nullify that act and document of the chancery of heaven, the lawful descendants of Isaac and Jacob must by the law of progeniture possess the land of Canaan, and will claim and are claiming already the promised possession. SACKED GRAVES. Our third argument is: That the whole world acknowl¬ edges the sanctity of their graves. Let us pay attention to this solemn fact: That the Holy Land is filled with the graves and the bones of pious Israelites who served the God of the whole earth pre-eminently, above all the nations of the world. No wonder that the pious Israelite weeps over the desolation of those graves Neh. 2:3; and yearns to lie down and to be buried in that sacred soil of Canaan; indeed, the Jews are a nation of mourners in this respect, and are looking forward with great sanctity. The true Christian has yet greater concern than ever Israel had: The Lord of Glory slept for three days in His sanctified grave, and rose as the conqueror of death and hell Rev. 1:17. He, as our representative and surety, has given to the soil of Palestine, a sacredness very far above our comprehension. Will, and can these graves forever remain in the hand of the Infidels? We answer, no! they must become again the property of Israel, the bones of the idolatrous priests of Bethel were burned by Josiah, 2 Chr. 34:4, 5, three hundred and fifty years after their burial, 1 King 13:2, and were an abhorence in the sight of Jehovah. We know that on the morning: of the Resurrection day, when Jesus shall stand on the Mount of Olives Zach. 14:4; that His people shall come forth, like Lazarus from their graves. Then the land of Palestine shall be free, and Israel shall possess it. Ps. 69:34:36; Ps. 22:28:31; Ps. 37:28, 29; 2 Thess. 1:7-10. SACRED ASHES. It is one of the enigmas never yet explained: That the sacred ashes of Mount Zion, produced by the millions of sacrifices offered to Jehovah, for more than a thousand — 6 — years; that the tears shed at the sin and thank-offerings falling upou the soil of Palestine should not be preserved in Jehovah bottle as a remembrance 9 Ps. 56:8. That the place where the Shekinah stood, most holy, most glorious, most precious above anything on earth, or in heaven, for¬ ever should be trodden down by the Gentiles Luke 21:24, yea, by the worst of the Gentiles, daily blasphemiug the identity of the Sou of God, the Christ of God, the King of Israel. There is only one solution to this problem, and that is: That God's justice shall yet be vindicated. The Moslems (the Turks) shall be punished for their odious crimes and Israel shall be reinstated in their lawful pos¬ session: coming events, which will beggar all description, shall herald the doom of God’s euemies, and the glory of His dear people, the Jews, yet beloved for the Lather’s sake. THE HOLY LAND. Palestine is indeed the most sacred country on the globe: In no other country on earth did angels sing, and was heard the melody of the angelic hosts, but in Bethle¬ hem, Ephratah, Luke 2:13. In no boundary on earth, was heard the audible voice of the Father, but in the Para¬ dise, Gen. 3:9; in Exod. 20:1; on the stream of Jordan, Matt. 3:17, and “in the holy mount,” 2 Peter 1:18. What an honor and dignity were bestowed upon those sacred spots! Indeed, Palestine is the sacred place of the Most high! No land of the globe was ever so consecrated by the footsteps of the Son of God, and no laud was ever so sanctified as Palestine, by the descending of the Holy Spirit visibly upon Jesus and upon the Apostles, Acts 2: 1-5. Yea, no other soil of any country has been the receiver of the sweat and blood of the Son of man, the Son of God. Calvary is remembered not only through the ages. It is remembered by Jehovah Jesus himself, Rev. 1:17, Rev. 5:5; and all generations to come will look, with the innumerable host of angels to the cross of jesus, planted in Jewish soil. Have all these facts no significa¬ tion? Are they not most precious treasures in the eyes of a Triune God, and if so? Shall the Most High forget His own inheritance? Jesus came once as the banished one, “to his own things, but his own people received him — 7 — not,” John 1:11. Shall He not claim it: “When He shall appear the second time without sinoffering unto salva¬ tion,” Hebrew 9:28? Shall the soil not be His own, which drunk up his precious blood? Shall Jesus go empty away, and leave the patrimony oi' His fathers and the throne of dayid? We ask these questions as in the sight of the coming One. We know Israel left Egypt without leaving “a hoof behind,” Exod. 10:26, so Jesus, as “ The Israelite Indeed ” shall possess not only His Ruth , but also her land, and inheritance forever and ever as the Goel of Israel' Ruth 4:1-12. Doubter. Let us now hear What your inward proofs are , that the Jews must be brought back to their patri¬ mony, and once must possess the land of Palestine ? M. Only a few remarks about your question. PALESTINE. This sequestered spot of earth, answers exactly as a counterpart to the Jewish people. It being small in dimensions only 200 by 80 miles, and yet it is known among all the nations of the world, like that people; It is isolated, closed in by natural obstacles, chains of moun¬ tain, deserts and sea, and yet, it has been the battle¬ field for many generations of Africa, Asia and Europe. Indeed, the words of Jehovah, have been, and are in ful¬ filment at the present time, that Palestine (the Eastern question) should be: “A stone, a burdensome stone for all people , all that burden themselves with it shall be cut to pieces, though all the people of the earth should be gath¬ ered against it,” Zech. 12:3, and the same, is true about the Jews. Palestine, as represented by the cursed fig-tree, Matt. 11:20, is now like the Jews, since 1800 years, under the curse, in a exiled state, resting of its Sabbaths, wait¬ ing for the redemption of Israel, Luke 1:67-79. Let us never forget that our Lord Jesus, has an inher¬ itance right upon that land, as an Israelite, as a son of Mary, as having received the token of circumcision, and as the heir of Abraham and David his fathers, according to the flesh; and consequently his rights must forever remain the same, as long as Palestine is in existence. — 8 — His Messianic claim must and will be put in, at some day of the approaching century , being a personal claim, and also a Mational claim, in accordance to Zech. 2:9-13. “Sing and rejoice O! daughter of Zion, for lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord....and the Lord shall inherit Judah , his portion in the holy land , and shall choose Jerusalem again. Be silent O! all flesh before the Lord, for He is raised up out of the habitation of His holiness” margin. ETHNOLOGY. Let us give only a synopsis of this extensive subject: The Jews belong to “the blessed” race of Shem, Gen. 9:26, so Christ is a Shemite, and the Lord of Shem No nation is purer in their descent of blood, Phil. 3:5, for more than 4,000 years, than Israel. As a race, they bear a most wonderful distinction; a Jewish skull is known and is discerned among the skulls of all other nations, and when living, a child can point out the race, often saying with scorn: “It is a Jew." Their intellectual faculties are of a superior order. They have accumulative powers of mind in learning, trading and commerce; they are destined to become “a race blessed by God.” Their restorative powers are amazing; they are like the bush, Lxod. 3:2, burning, but not consumed—never annihilated in thousands of merciless persecutions, phenix-like they arise out of their ashes and shine brighter than ever before. The people of “the wronged sinew” in China, the per¬ secuted Karaite of Russia, those living on the Oder, on the Rhine, on the Hudson, or elsewhere, all manifest the same traces of chaiacter. We say more, the nearly ten millions of Israelites, “Jews,” possess a power scarcely dreamed of by the Christian nations. As a nation they rule the money markets of the world; they loan billions of dollars. “In the last twelve years the house of the Rothschilds have loaned to certam European governments nearly $450,000,000” {New York World). From where, and what are the reasons that the Jews do not arise as a nation to recover the pat- — 9 — rimouy of their fathers, the graves of their ancestors? We answer, the time appointed for that event has not yet arrived, “the pear” spoken of in Deut. 28:67 is yet upon them, they are (as before in the wilderness) in a preparatory slate, they are now serving yet the nations, not as slaves, but as man-pleasers. “Their table being made a snare and a trap, and a stumbling block and a recompense unto them” Rom. 11:9; they worship in deed: “The modern golden calf.” That a movement among the Jews will be a fact of the near future is plainly indicated in the prophecy of Ezekiel 37: ‘'‘The dry bone s moved,” the skin, flesh and sinews all indicate a progressive movement , and also the marching of the army of the slain brings before us a concentration of that people; and truly, it seems to be a problem, that such a movement never yet has been tried. What a revolution! What a convulsion of the monetary circles of the wolrd it would give, if that money power should join hands with the mass of that people in all lands of the globe. The Jews as a nation have a tendency , and a promise to be rulers of the nations, Isa, 60:12. Indeed, the crescent would wane, at the thought that its day had come, and that the rightful heirs had entered their own patrimony. Wonder - Jut developments may be seen in a few years. EXPECTATION among the nations. Every one who comes in contact with the Jewish na¬ tion knows and understands clearly: “That they are a people dwelling alone” Numbers 23:10, distinct in habits, peculiar in keeping feast and fast days; in one word: “an enigma” among nations; and yet, Israel is a rock ou which Infidelity must break down; a star of light, now dimly shining, which will Hash forth in exuberant light and glory, when it shall come near, and approach to “The Sun of Righteousness,” their lawful King. This feeling is found everywhere among the nations: The orthodox Jew believes aud proclaims: That there is yet a bright destiny in the future, and in his most solemn assembly: He cries out: “ Next year our jeast in Jerusa¬ lem .” The Moslem keeps “the Eastern gate at Jerusalem — 10 — securely shut,” to prevent tne entrance of the expected coming of Israel’s King through that gate.” Among all the oriental nations there is an expectation that great events will come and that Jerusalem ‘‘the sec¬ ond holy city of the Moslems” will become the centre of coming evenls. And so it is among the Occidents: How many tens of thousands of believers, “ prernillenarians ,” waiting for the coming and the glorious appearance of the Lord Jesus, pray daily, pray fervently: “Tht kingdom come;” they join their prayers and inward hopes with the Spirit and the Bride, and say; “Come” and verify the word of Him who has promised: “Surely, I come quickly, Amen.” Rev. 22:17-20. Shall the doctrine of the Primitive Apos¬ tolic church be set aside and become of no avail? No! Jesus comes again—Jesus as earth’s King shall rule on David’s throne. Doubter. Your suggestions are all very interesting , but we require your Scriptural proofs-. “Thus sank Jehovah God! What is written in the volume of the BookV ’ and to establish the fact: That the Jews as a whole nation shall be reinstated in Canaan, and that it will be under the rule of Chi'ist , the King of the Jews, I in Jerusalem. M. Your demand and request is a most proper one, and it is our desigu to lay before you the very words spoken by the Lord on these subjects; our only request is: That every one may read them as they are: “ literal ,” without spiritualizing; or giving to them another meaning or saying: “This must be understood quite differ¬ ent; it means not the Jews or the Jewish land; but it means the Christian church, this dispensation or the coun¬ try in which we live.” DILEMMA. Jehovah delares: That His covenants made with Abra¬ ham and David, the First about the land of Canaan, the Latter about the Davidic dynasty are made forever: Gen. 17:7, 8. “And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee in their generation for an everlasting cov - — 11 — enant, to be a God uuto thee and to thy seed after thee. And T will give unto thee and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.” Gen, 13:15: “For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. Ps. 105:8: “lie hath remembered ...is covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.” Ps. 89:3, 4: I have made a. covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David, my servant, Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.” 2 Sam. 7: 12-29; Jer. 30:9, 10: “But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their King (llebr. their beloved King) whom I will raise up uuto them and Jacob shall return and shall be in rest and be quiet and none shall make him afraid.” Ezek. 34:24, 25: “And the Lord will be their God and My servant David (Hebr. My beoved servant) a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it, and I will make with them a covenant of peace . .. and they shall no more be a prey to the heathen nations.” Bzek. 37:25: “And they shall dwell in the land that l have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers dwelt, and they shall dwell therein, even they and their children’s children for ever and my servant David (beloved servant) shall be their prince/or ever." (The meaniug of the word David in Hebrew is “ beloved .”) What alternative will you take? If you sav: These covenants are broken, abrogated or set aside. Very well. We ask you, What surety have you that the new covenant or the covenant of your own soul is not set aside? One covenant is in its nature, execution and sealing even sacred, holy and true as the other; God is a covenent lov¬ ing and a covenant keeping God and your denial scatters alf the foundations of your holy religion. You say: Those promises are fulfilled. Judah did return and now we have another dispensation. We answer: Indeed Israel did partly return and now we live under the dispensation of the nations, but we affirm solemnly, those promises are not fulfilled, they are for ever. The Lord calls Israel yet “His people Rom. 11:1-5. “As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sakes, but as touching the elec¬ tion, they are beloved for the father’s sake.” Rom. 11:38, and the Lord knowing our unbelief iu this respect has made mountains, hills, rivers and valleys to be co-wit- nesses of those prophecies and are made pledges to the world, indeed the following words are unique: “Ezek. 3L 6-15, “Therefore thus saith the Lord God: I have lifted up mine hand: Surely the heathen that are about you they shall bear their shame. But ye, 01 mountains of Israel , ye shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to — 12 — my people of Israel, for they are at hand to come, for be¬ hold, I am for you and I will turn unto you, and ye shall be tilled and sown.” THE TWELVE TRIBES OF ISRAEL. But the question maybe asked: Does the expression “my people of Israel’’ mean all the house of Jacob, all the Jews, without any exception , and we answer: Yes, it is as clear as the cloudless sun that shinelh in the heavens: Ezelc. 36:10. And I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel , even all of it .and I will settle you after your old estates and will do better unto you than at your beginnings. Yea, 1 will cause men to walk upon you. even my people Israel, and they shall pos¬ sess thee, and thou shait be their inheritance.” Ezek. 37:11: “Then he said unto me, Son of Man, these bones are the whole house of Israel:” verse 19 “Thus saith the Lord God: Beheld, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Israel, his fellows, and will put them with him even with the stick of Judah and make them one stick and they shall be one in mine hand .... and I will make them one nation in the laud upon the mountains of Israel, and one King shall be King to them all, and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at, all.” Ezek. 39:28: “Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led iuto captivity among the heathen ‘nations,’ but I have gathered them unto their own land and have left none of them any more there.” Micah2:12: “I will surely assem¬ ble, O Jacob, ALL OF thee ” Romans 11:26 “and so all Israel shall be saved as it is written, ‘There shall come out of Zion, the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob;” Hebrews 8:11. “For all shall know me from the least to the greatest.” Luke 1:33 “And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever.” Luke 22:30. “That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judg¬ ing the twelve tribes of Israel Doubter. You have indeed produced forcible argu¬ ments, yet , what we like to hear is your conclusive proofs: That the Jews will come out from their present “Diaspora," and will settle in Canaan; and, in what manner that restoration will be accomplished ? M. The Ashkenazi and the Sephardi, Spanish and German Jews, which constitute the Jewish population of Europe, and of Palestine, belong principally to the tribe of Judah, and these will settle first on the old homestead, and such is already partly the case with them, and also with Yemen Jews, which are at present in Jerusalem and in Palestine. Zechariah 12:7, “The Lord also shall -13- save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David, and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, do not magnify themselves against Judah.” Then, after¬ wards, the descendants of the Ten Tribes now seemingly lost, will come from the east, Rev. 16:12. A general uprising among the Jews of China and Ceylon,—among the inhabitants of Afghanistan, Bokhara, Turkistan, Samarkand and Belouchistan will be seen, and a search¬ ing after the descent, and descendants of Israel every¬ where shall occur, and that search shall be made thor¬ oughly, the following prophecies speak of a twofold gathering: Isa. 49:12. ,l Behold these shall come from far, and lo these from the North and from the west , and these from the land of Siuiin,” Isa. 31:8. “Behold, I will bring them from the North Country , and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the women with child, and her that travaileth with child together, a great company shall return thither.”—Jer. 3:12; 23:8.—Isa. 66:20: “And they shall bring all tour brethren for an offering, unto the Lord out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters (coaches), and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to my holy moun¬ tain Jerusalem, saith the Lord;”—Jer. 16:16: Behold I will send for many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every moun¬ tain, and from everv hill and out of the holes of the rocks;”—Amos 9:9: “For lo, 1 will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. Verse 15, “And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their” land, which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God;”—Micha 4:7, And I will make her, that halted a remnant, and her that was cast off a strong nation , and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from hence¬ forth, even for ever .” In the above verses we have the gathering from the North and West, and those Jews out of Judah shall be established first unto their own land, in Jerusalem (as now already a beginning of 100,000 Jews settled in Pal¬ estine, and about 35,000 in Jerusalem, have proved the fulfilment of the prophecy). The question asked: In what manner will their res¬ toration be accomplished? aud, we answer with the words of the Prophets, Micah 2:7. “Oh! house of Jacob, is the Spirit of the Lord straitened?” and Zech. 12:6: “And Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, -14- even in Jerusalem.” Indeed, it is our duty to observe the marvelous works which the Lord is doing in our days. One century ago the Jews could not enter the ci*y of Jerusalem except at the peril of their lives, and now (but only a short time ago) they have acquired the rights of citizenship and of buying property. Jerusalem can already be called “a Jewish city.” Let it not be forgotten that the Lord is already preparing the way for the return of the ten tribes, and for the whole house of Israel. God’s agencies are operating in many diverse ways and man¬ ners. It has happened in our life-time: That the interiors of Asia, Tibet and China were thrown open; that the nations divided “the dark continent” of Africa; and are coveting the utmost boundaries of the globe; and that a network of railways cover the five parts of the earth; and no doubt, wheu God’s time shall have arrived, many fishers, “Jewish missionaries, and many hunters.” “Jewish agencies ,” shall be sent out from Jerusalem to fish, and to hunt, every stream, and every mountain top.—yea, every coal, salt and mineral-mine, being the holes, where Jews may reside, shall be minutely examined, to bring them to Jehovah’s holy mountain in Jerusalem. The prophecy quoted before, Ezek. 39-28: “But, I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any move there;" 1 and also Amos 9:9: “That not the least grain shall fall upon the earth shall surely be fulfilled .” Are those arguments not proving the question proposed? Doubter. Your reasonings seem to be conclusive for a believer of premillenarian doctrines, but I am yet in doubt: My own eyes see: That millions of Israelites “Jews" go rather to London, or to New York, than to Jerusalem, and thousands of them are going to South America, Africa and Australia; now, in the sight of such facts, it is strange to hear: That the Jews will all be gathered again to the holy land, and our blessed Lord Jesus will be King over them— our Savior is ours, and we are Gentiles. M. Surely, your questions are perplexing, and have beeu always the cause, that many Christians have given their fiat, and put their seal to your arguments. —15 — rather than to the words of the Eternal Amen. In answer to your questions, we briefly remark: 1. That the times of the Gentile Dispensation (nations) Rom. 11:25 in which we live, are running swiftly to their end. 2. That the dayspring of the next Jewish Dispensation is arising and that the ligtree, the emblem of the Jewish nation, Matt. 11:20 is again sprouting out, indicating that the sum¬ mer is 7 iear, aud that the dispersion of them will come soon to an end. 3. That the immigration to Canaan, although partially proceeding, is already more in number than the return of the Jews was when leaving the Baby- Tonian captivity, Ezra V, 2:64, and then, at that time many Jews did not leave, but remained in Assyria aud Persia. To understand your question, we must consider and_ con¬ template the mission of Israel to the world at large, a mission which no other nation can fultill. When Israel left Egypt, they asked for their wages due for their services during their bondage of 215 years, Exod. 3:22, now the Jews are performing that same work in “ laying the nations under tribute, ” and the wages kept from them in ages past during their persecution, are to be restored to them again. In South America they suck the breasts of the people, the same in the United States, and in England, Russia and Germany, they suck the breasts of the Kings and Queens, Isa. 60:17; Indeed, the Jews are already “a burdensome stone for all people” Zach. 12:3, and to fultill that mission, "A dispersion is a necessity. The mission of the Jews to the world is a showing: What Election love means, Jer. 31:3. No people on the face of the earth can be com¬ pared with the Jews in that respect. As a nation they are chosen, they are il a holy people, and a special peopled' Deutr. 7:6; yea, they are called “an eternal people” (Hebrew) Olam, Isa. 44:7;—The Lord speaks of them in the most endearing language; “The Lord has given the dearly beloved of His soul in the hand of her enemies, Jer. 12:7;—He speaks of Ephraim in the most emphatical yearning language: “How shall I give thee up Ephraim? How shall 1 deliver thee, Israel....! will not return to destroy Ephraim for I am God, and not man, the Holy One in the midst of thee,” Hozea, 11:8, 9—Is Ephraim my dear son?... .1 do earnestly remember him still, therefore —16— my bowels are troubled for him, I will surely have mercy upon him saith the Lord,” Jer. 31:ii0. As a nation, on the other hand, Israel, the Jews, is an extremely sinful nation , read Jer. 2:11; Ezra 4:15; Jer. 5:23; Ezek. 12:25; rebellious, unthankful, unruling; and although, confessing God and keeping the feast of Passover, they crucified their Messiah , Savior and King ;—They have demonstrated through their history, the doctrine of Eternal Election. God's Eternal Decrees about them, and that of the Perseverance of Saints ;—and also, they have laid open before the world, that the human heart iu its deepest recesses yearns after things gone by, seeking after rest, and going to the end of the earth in quest of it, and that they are like the son in the parable Luke 15:16, “eating the husks of swine in a foreign country,” and are satisfied with them. Shall this lost child, not arise, and go again to his fathers’ house, to the old homestead? Shall he not return to his fathers’ bosom, and weep, as “they weep over a firstborn” Zech. 12:10? We answer that question—They will, and they are coming “as the doves to their windows” Isa. 60:8; Rom. 11:19-21. Doubter Please, produce your New Testament- proofs: That Jesus will be King on David's throne in Jerusalem % M. The N. T: commences with that subject in tell¬ ing us: Matth. 1. That Christ in his genealogy , is known as the royal son of David , and of all the Kings of Jerusa¬ lem;—Matth. 5:35 “Jerusalem is called the city of the great King.” Matth. 2:1-11. The wise man of the East, did ask in Jerusalem: “Where is he, that is born King of the Jews ....we are come to worship him”....and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts “Kingly gifts,” gold, and fraukincense and myrrh, and Nathanael saith to Christ: “John 1:49.” Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel," and in John 12:15 Christ entered the city of Jerusalem on His coronation day as the coming King of the Jews accord¬ ing to prophecy: “Fear not, daughter of Zion, behold —17— thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.” And the peo¬ ple cried: “Blessed be the kingdom of our father david that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.” Mark 11:10. Christ not only accepted these titles He went farther. Pilate did ask him, John 18:33: “Art’thou the King of the Jews?” and Jesus answered (lit) verse 37: “Thou saith it: King I am,” and in accord¬ ance to this declaration, He was crucified, having this accusation written over his head: “This is Jesus the King of the Jews.” Matt. 27:37. The arch anyel declares it emphatically. CHRIST THE KING OF THE JEWS. Our Lord was condemned because He acknowledged to be- “ The Son of the Living God," Matt. 26:63, and “the Kina of the Jews," Matt. 27:11. Here we have a prerog¬ ative of Christ, which belongs only to the Jews and not to any other nation. They crucified their King, prom¬ ised to them in their own Scriptures; the power of dark¬ ness the power of Rome, the priestcraft of Jerusalem, yea the Jewish nation, combined and conspired in that fearful “catastrophe,” they killed the Prince of Life; but God hath raised Him from the dead” Acts 3:15, and made that crucified one “both Lord and Christ, according to the oath sworn to David that of the fruit of David s loins, according to the flesh, He would raise up Christ to sit on his throne, “David’s throne,” Acts 2:29:36. Now the question must be answered peremptorily: Was Jesus the crucified King of the Jews in deed and in truth-, the King of the Jews, the King of Israel, at any time? and if this question is answered in the negative then the conse¬ quence must follow: (If not in the future?) that Christ is — 18 — not and cannot be the true Messiah. Indeed, on the answer to this question hangs the veracity of our holy religion. We put our seal to the truth of God, and de¬ clare: Jesus, the Christ of God shall personally come back, appear in glory and reign as the King of the Jews over the house of Jacob and His reign and dominion shall have no end. Luke 1:32, 33. AXIOMS. It is an established fact: That our Lord as the God- man was annointed to three offices n. 1 . Prophet, Priest and King, and that He in Palestine was the greatest of all the prophets ever before Him on earth; also it is uudeni- able, that as man He died in Palestine on the cross as the only Priest, being the Lamb of God. The third office of being a King in Palestine on the throne of his father David, he never filled, and yet, He was the Prince Royal of the house of David. How did this oversight occur? That Satan understood this axiom is perfectly clear, he did know: “That the Christ of God must rule on earth as King” Matt. 2:5 ; Rev. 12:5 ; and consequently, “he offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them” Matt. 4:8. We also read in Luke 1:71 that Jesus came on earth: “To save Israel from its enemies, and from the hand of all that hate the Jews.” We all agree, that when Christ died at Golgotha, that this was: “ the hour of the power of darkness" Luke 22:53, and that Satau and his allies triumphed in the victory. Acts 4:25. 26. We all agree, that our Lord never showed himself as the Conqueror on earth, to the unbelieving Jews (Acts 1:2, 3; 10:42). Now, the question arises: In what manner shall the quoted prophecy be fulfilled, and also the words, which we find iu Zach. 12:10 and in Rev. 1:7? Must it not also draw our utmost astonishment: That the Lord allows Satan to have possession of the Holy Land, and that the Turks, the most wicked and the most blas¬ phemous of all the enemies of Christ, and the most trusty adies of Satan are the rulers of that country? No doubt. — 19 — Satan feels a daily delight in hearing the Muezzin crying out '‘Mohammed is the Prophet” and seeing the Moham¬ medans trampling down upon all Christendom, and dese¬ crating Immanuels’ land. Isa. 8:8. Is it not even marvelous, that all the other nations cannot make Jerusalem free. The Crusaders tried it, but iu vain—The powers of Europe tried it without success, and it is an acknowledged fact: That Statesmen have come to the conclusion: That there is not another such an intri¬ cacy known on the globe, like that of Palestine. Now, the great questions are: Who shall have it in the future: Satan or Christ? The Turks, or the Jews? and, Who shall be the King of the Jews—In the plain light of Scripture, we answer: Jesus Christ , shall be the King of the Jews , and His Kingdom shall have no end. Dan. 2:44., Luke 1:38. A GLORIOUS VISTA. What tongue is able to proclaim the coming glory of Israel, what pen is swift enough to record the coming events? The Spirit of God has given us the words, and drawn a picture of love, unspeakably lovely and joy fully. We will quote: Isa. 66:10:14 “Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her, rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her. That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations , and be delighted with the abundance of her glory. For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river , and the glory of the nations like a flowing. stream, then shad ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees. .. .and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. Zephauiah 3:14-20: Sing, O daughter of Zion, shout. O Israel, be glad and rejoice with all the heart, 0 daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord hath taken away thy judgments, He hath cast out thine enemy. The king of Israel, even the Lord is in the midst of thee; thou shalt not see evil any more. In that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: “Fear thou not, and to Zion. Let not thine hands be slack. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty. He will save. He will rejoice ovei thee with joy. He will rest in His love. He will bring - 20 - joy oyer thee with singing! .... At that time, will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you; for I will make you a name, and a praise among all the people of the earth , when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.” Here we have a description of love, above all that can be found elsewhere, but in the beautiful song of Solomon: “The heavenly picture of love between Christ and His people in the coming millen¬ nial age.” Isa. 62;2-4 “And the Gentiles ‘nations’ shall see thy righteousness and all kings thy glory; and thou, ‘Israel, the Jews,’ shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Thou shalt be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt not more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be called Desolate, but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah, for the Lord delighteth in thee , and thy land shall be married.” Verse 12: And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord , and thou shalt be called, “ Sought-out , a city not forsaken A WORD TO ALL. The topic treated on in the preceding pages is a topic worthy of our consideration.—It is of the greatest import¬ ance at the present time;—It is producing to the lover of Israel untold blessings. Ps 128:6: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love t,hee^ ; It opens up the ancient treasures of prophecies;—It gives a view of old and new things;—It leads us into the chambers ot delight, where the Holy Spirit will teach His Servants, and will reveal: “the hidden wisdom” Dan 12:4, promised to them”, yea, it causes us: To study better, to preach better, and to pray more fervently, than ever before;— The command of our Lord is: Luke 24:4* “ Hey inning at Jerusalem ,” and in the city of the great King we have to end, and is the radius of the circle in which we ought to labor, and having these thoughts, we will do the work which the Master did: “In saving the lost sheep of the house of Israel:' Matth. 10:6, and our delight and joy will be in establishing missions for Jew and Gentiles. I he General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1840, resolved unanimously: “That the cause of Israel should from THAT TIME FORM ONE OF THE GREAT MISSIONARY SCHEMES of that Church and the blessings from on high followed upon their undertaking, “The Lord owned that labor of l ove We also rejoice in the fact: That although we nearly labored alone from 1864 to 1876, in the Jewish mis¬ sion-field in New York City, now nearly ten missions to the Jews are established, also Missions in Philadelphia, Chicago and other cities for Israel, have been founded. To God be the glory! . . .. „ n , May, we ask you, Brethren, as in the sight ot Loci: Are the Jews remembered, in your preachiug, and prayers, in your contributions and support?—Is this your continual aim and delight?- or, is the Jewish Mission cause forgotten? OFFICERS, SABBATH-SCHOOLS. Will you be offended, if we ask you: Do you remem¬ ber in the prayers of your Sabbath-school, the spiritual wants and need's of so many of the exiled and persecuted children of Abraham, and of the Jews amongst us? Do you often speak of them, to your youthful scholars, as - 22 - being the children of the Patriarchs, Priests and Prophets, and of the witnesses placed before us, to testify : That the Bible is true and is the word of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? Do you impress upon their minds ; That Jesus, our Master is the Jew of Nazareth, one of that same race, now so shamefully forgotten, and neg¬ lected? Let us continually remember the words of our Lord: “Verily, I say unto you, inasmuch as you have done it unto oue of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40. PRAYER-MEETINGS. Is it not a common oversight, of those who attend Missionary and common prayer-meetings, to seek the spiritual welfare of the foreign heathen nations, to ask spiritual gifts for the laborers in those fields, and never to bring one petition, one request before the Triune God in behalf of His vet “beloved people for the fathers’ sake;” Indeed, Israel, “the Jews,” is by many entirely forgotten in their private, family, and social prayers,— and O! how incongruous it must be in the eyes of Him, “who wept over Jerusalem" to hear only the prayers for those nations, whom we have never seen and to send to them the bread of life; and to keep it back from our neigh¬ bor-citizens, the Jews, who did give us that bread of life; yea, never to speak personally to them in regard to their souls, although we transact business with them. Let us observe, the injunction of the apostle Paul in Rom. 1:16 “To the Jew first, and also to the Greek-Gen- tile.” Here, we have the rule for our conduct, the Jew is the tirst, the Gentile, the next, “Thy Kingdom come,” Jews and Gentiles, must be our daily prayer, and although this principle must be the principle of the Church, and church-meetings; yet. Israel has a more superior claim, than the Gentiles. To go to the heathen, preaching and supporting the Gospel among them is a duty of love. To go to the Jews as missionaries, and to preach Christ Jesus, the Jew of Nazareth, is an obligation resting upon the Church; it is not only remitting an old debt, unpaid during the ages; it ought to be a debt paid with accrued interest ; Rom. 15-26, 27; “For it hath pleased them of —23— Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints, which are at Jerusalem. It hath pleased them verily, and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.” RELIGIOUS PRESS. May we also speak a few words to you Editors of the religious and secular press—to you who are wielding a pen of magic and of power, and can be called “the motor power of the present age—is it not an astonishing fact that the doctrine of Jesus' personal and glorious appearance on earth as the King of the Jeivs in Jerusalem contains such a small space on your editorial pages; and that if by acci¬ dent the .lews are mentioned they seem rather to be regarded as an outlived religious sect, and a next neighbor to Christianity, although they discard Christ totally; scarcely ever is given to them their right place as being a nation indeed, and in expectancy , a flower whose leaves are unfolding, which will draw, in the near future, the admiration of the whole world. Shall we, as Gentile Christians profess the doctrine of the Jew of Nazareth and forget: “His yet beloved peo¬ ple?” Shall we record the prospects of the oriental and Mongolian nations and neglect them? Shall we enjoy the blessings of the greatest son of Abraham and David and forget His brethren? It was spoken by Jewish lips and to Jewish disciples: “And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water, only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward." Matt. 10:42. OUR OMEGA. To you, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, who are warm friends of God's ancient people , and whose daily prayers for the Jews are ascending to the throne of the Most High, it is our prayer: “That your bow abide in strength, and that your hands may be made strong, by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob (from whence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel)” Gen 49:24. To you, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, who are con¬ verted Israelites, who are brought by the Holy Spirit, —24— to the knowledge: That your eldest Brother Joseph is yet in life, “at the right haud of the “Majesty on High,” and that He will provide for you. “Fear not, you are the first-fruits of the harvest to come, to follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth” Rev. 14:4. To you, Israelites, “Jews,” who are yet estranged from your Messiah, Immanuel Jesus, and are yet the wandering sheep of the house of Israel, if this Tract should happen to come in your hands we send it with a warm heart, even warm as it was when we spent our whole time ar d the vigor of manhood in missionating amongst you;* our daily prayer is that of your ancient brother, Saul of Tarsus: “Brethren, my heart’s desire, and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved” Rom. 10:1. O! that the Spirit from on high may blow mightily upon those dry bones that they may become a great army for King Jesus Ps. 110:2, and not alone for the Jews, “Israel’s race” is our prayer; it is “O, Father! Thy kingdom come,” among Jew and Gentiles; it is for all and for those who are yet estranged from our Master, “The Christ of God.” b, is the Spirit of the Lord straitened? and Zech. 2.6. “And Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, -14- even in Jerusalem.” Indeed, it is our duty to observe the marvelous works which the Lord is doing m our days One century ago the Jews could not enter the ci y of Jerusalem except at the peril of their lives and now (but only a short time ago) they have acquired the rights ot citizenship and of buying property. Jerusalem can already be called “a Jewish city- Let it not be forgotten that the Lord is already preparing the way for the retain of the ten tribes, and for the whole house of Israel God s agencies are operating in many diverse ways and man¬ ners. It has happened in our life-time: That the inteuois of Asia Tibet and China were thrown open; that the nations’divided “the dark continent” of Africa; and are coveting the utmost boundaries ot the globe; and that a network of railways cover the five parts of the earth; and no doubt, when God’s time shall have arrived, many fishers “Jewish missionaries, and many hunters. Jewish agencies,” shall be sent out from Jerusalem to hsh, and to hunt every stream, and every mountain top.—yea, every coal 'salt and mineral-mine, being the holes, where Jews may reside, shall be minutely examined, to bring them to Jehovah’s holy mountain in Jerusalem. I he piophecy quoted before, Ezek. 39-28: “But. I have gathered them uuto their own land, and have left none of them, any mo le there'” and also Amos 9:9: “That not the least gram shall’fall upon the earth shall surely be fulfilled Are those arguments not proving the question proposed? Doubter. Your reasonings seem to be conclusive for a believer of premillenarian doctrines, but I am yet in doubt: My own eves see: That millions of Israelites Jews go rather to London , or to New York, than to Jerusalem, and thousands of them are going to South America , Africa and Australia; now, in the sight of such facts, it is strange to hear: That the Jews will all be gathered again to the holy land, and our blessed Lord Jesus will be King over them our Savior is ours, and we are Gentiles. M. Surely, your questions are perplexing, and have been always the cause, that many Christians have given their fiat , and put their seal to youi arguments, —15 — rather than to the words of the Internal Amen, la answer to your questions, we briefly remark: 1. lhat the times of the Gentile Dispensation (nations) Rom. 11:25in which we live, are running swiftly to their end. 2. lhat the davspring of the next Jewish Dispensation is arising and that the iigtree, the emblem of the Jewish nation, Matt 11:20 is again sprouting out, indicating that the sum¬ mer is near, aud that the dispersion of them will come soon to an end. 3. That the immigration to Canaan, although partially proceeding, is already more in number than the return of the Jews was when leaving the Baby¬ lonian captivity, Ezra u, 2:64, and then, at that time many Jews did "not leave, but remained in Assyria aud rersia. To understand your question, we must consider and con¬ template the mission of Israel to the world at large, a mission which no other nation can fulfill. When Israel left Egypt, thev asked for their wages due for their services during their bondage of 215 years, Exod. 3:22, now the Jews are performing that same work in "laying the nations under tribute and the wages kept from them in ages past during their persecution, are to be restored to them again, in South America the}' suck the breasts of the people, the same in the United States, and in England, Russia and Germany, they suck the breasts of the Kings and Queens, lsa. 60:17; Indeed, the Jews are already “a burdensome stone for all people” Zach. 12:3, and to fulfill that mission, ‘A dispersion is a necessity. The mission of the Jews to the world is a showing: What Election love means, Jer 31-3. No people on the face of the earth can be com¬ pared with the Jews iu that respect. The Lord thy God if ^ the midst of thee is mighty. He will save. He will rejoice over thee with joy. He will rest in His love. He will bring - 20 - JOY oyer thee with singing! .... At that time, will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you; for I will make you a name, and a praise among all the people of the earthy when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord.” Here we have a description of love, above all that can be found elsewhere, but in the beautiful song of Solomon: “The heavenly picture of love between Christ and His people in the coming millen¬ nial age.” Isa. 62;2-4 “And the Gentiles ‘nations’ shall see thy righteousness and all kings thy glory; and thou, ‘Israel, the Jews,’shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Thou shalt be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. Thou shalt not more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be called Desolate, but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah, for the Lord delightetli in thee, and thy land shall be married.” Verse 12: And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the'Lord, and thou shalt be called, 1 'Sought-out, a city not forsaken A WORD TO ALL. Before, we take our farewell of this subject, and lay down our pen, as being the last Tract we ever expect to write, and like our former tracts’ to send it as a silent messenger, on its errand, we ask your indulgence in bringing briefly before you, the following remarks: *Former Tracts Issued: “The Personal Coming of Christ, as the King on the throne of David in Jerusalem;” “The Anti-Christ, and the signs of His coming;” “The Times of the Gentiles;” The Dispensa¬ tions, National Reform Movement;” “Satan, the Deceiver of the Nations;” “Ichabod, Decay and Lawlessness Threatening Church Organizations and Families;” “The Wave Period, Ecclesia (The Church], the Kingdom to Come;” Palestine, (an Abstract of Title Deeds) Jewish Domain and Property:” “The Testimony of the Bible, Versus the Parliament of Religions.”—“The Holy Spirit,—The declen¬ sions of religion and fallacies of the XIX Century. 21 - brethren IN THE MINISTRY. The topic treated on in the preceding pages is a topic worthy of our consideration.—It is of the greatest import¬ ance at the present time;—It is producing to the lover of Israel untold blessings. Ps 128:6: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper that love thee”; It opens up the ancient treasures of prophecies;—It gives a view of old and new things;—It leads us into the chambers of delight, where the Holy Spirit will teach His Servants, and will reveal: “the hidden wisdom’’ Dan 12:4, promised to them’’, yea, it causes us: To study better, to preach better, and to pray more fervently, than ever before;— The command of our Lord is: Luke 24:47 “Beginning at Jerusalem ,” and in the city of the great King we have to end, and is the radius of the circle in which we ought to labor, and having these thoughts, we will do the work which the Master did: “In saving the lost sheep of the house of Israel Matth. 10:6, and our delight and joy will be in establishing missions for Jew and Gentiles. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1840, resolved unanimously: “That the cause of Israel should from THAT TIME FORM ONE OF THE GREAT MISSIONARY SCHEMES of that Church and the blessings from on high followed upon their undertaking, “The Lord owned that labor of l ove .”—We also rejoice in the fact:. That although we nearly labored alone from 1864 to 18ib, in the Jewish mis¬ sion-field in New York City, now nearly ten missions to the Jews are established, also Missions in Philadelphia, Chicago and other cities for Israel, have been founded. To God be the glory! . , . , t , May, we ask you, Brethren, as in the sight of God: Are the Jews remembered, in your preaching, and prayers, in your contributions and support?—Is this your continual aim and delight?- or, is the Jewish Mission cause forgotten? OFFICERS, SABBATH-SCHOOLS. Will you be offended, if we ask you: Do you remem¬ ber in the prayers of your Sabbath-school, the spiritual wants and needs of so many of the exiled and persecuted children of Abraham, and of the Jews amongst us? Do you often speak of them, to your youthful scholars, as - 22 - being the children of the Patriarchs, Priests and Prophets, and of the witnesses placed before us, to testify : That the Bible is true and is the word of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? Do you impress upon their minds ; That Jesus, our Master is the Jew of Nazareth, one of that same race, now so shamefully forgotten, and neg¬ lected? Let us continually remember the words of our Lord: “Verily, I say unto you, inasmuch as you hare done it unto one of the least of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40. PRAYER-MEETINGS. Is it not a common oversight, of those who attend Missionary and common prayer-meetings, to seek the spiritual welfare of the foreign heathen nations, to ask spiritual gifts for the laborers in those fields, and never to bring one petition, one request before the Triune God in behalf of His vet “beloved people for the fathers’ sake;” Indeed, Israel, “the Jews,” is by many entirely forgotten in their private, family, and social prayers,— and O! how incongruous it must be in the eyes of Him, “who wept over'Jerusalem" to hear only the prayers for those nations, whom we have never seen and to send to them the bread of life; and to keep it back from our neigh¬ bor-citizens, the Jews, who did give us that bread of life; yea, never to speak personally to them in regard to their souls, although we transact business with them. Let us observe, the injunction of the apostle Paul in Rom. 1:16 “To the Jew first, and also to the Greek-Gen- tile.” Here, we have the rule for our conduct, the Jew is the first, the Gentile, the next, “Thy Kingdom come,” Jews and Gentiles, must be our daily prayer, and although this principle must be the principle of the Church, and church-meetings; yet. Israel has a more superior claim, than the Gentiles. To go to the heathen, preaching and supporting the Gospel among them is a duty of love. To go to the Jews as missionaries, and to preach Christ Jesus, the Jew of Nazareth, is an obligation resting upon the Church; it is not only remitting an old debt, unpaid during the ages; it ought to be a debt paid with accrued interest ; Ro’m. 15-26, 27; “For it hath pleased them of —23— Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints, which are at Jerusalem. It hath pleased them verily, aud their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.” RELIGIOUS PRESS. May we also speak a few words to you Editors of the religious and secular press—to you who are wielding a pen of magic and of power, and can be called ‘‘the motor power of the present age—is it not an astonishing fact that the doctrine of Jesus' personal and glorious appearance on earth as the King of the Jews in Jerusalem contains such a small space on your editorial pages; aud that if by acci¬ dent the Jews are mentioned they seem rather to be regarded as an outlived religious sect, and a next neighbor to Christianity, although they discard Christ totally; scarcely ever is given to them their right place as being a nation indeed, and in expectancy , a flower whose leaves are unfolding, which will draw, in the near future, the admiration of the whole world. It was spoken by Jewish lips and to Jewish disciples: “And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water, only in the name of a disciple, verily I say uuto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward .” Matt. 10:42. To you, dear brothers and sisters in Christ, who are con¬ verted Israelites, who are brought by the Holy Spirit, —24— to the knowledge: That your eldest Brother Joseph is yet in life, “at the right hand of the “Majesty on High,” and that He will provide for yon. “Fear not, you are the first-fruits of the harvest to come, to follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth” Rev. 14:4. To you, Israelites, “Jews,” who are yet estranged from your Messiah, Immanuel Jesus, and are yet the wandering sheep of the house of Israel, if this Tract should happen to come in your hands we send it with a warm heart, even warm as it was when we spent our whole time at d the vigor of manhood in missionating amongst you;* our daily prayer is that of your ancient brother, Saul of Tarsus: “Brethren, my heart’s desire, and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved” Rom. 10:1. O! that the Spirit from ou high may blow mightily upon those dry bones that they may become a great array for King Jesus Fs. 110:2, and not alone for the Jews, “Israel’s race” is our prayer; it is “O, Father! Thy kingdom come,” among Jew and Gentiles; it is for all and for those who are yet estranged from our Master, “The Christ of God.” O! that the Holy Spirit may blow upon His garden and “that the Beloved may come to His garden, and eat His precious fruits” Songs of Solo¬ mon 4:16. And, as we commenced in our Alpha, so we end in our Omega; we commend it to God and the Lamb with the humble petition that it may redound to the glory of His name forever, Amen. A C. Tris.
