Chicago Avenue Bridge CHICAGO A GUARANTEE THIS GUARANTEE MEANS SOME¬ THING TO YOU, MR. PAINT BUYER 1007 PURE All materials are put through chemical and micro¬ scopic tests. The chemist is very particular as to what is used. All material must come up to our standard. This branch of the work is overseen by our chemical expert. Or. H. B. Eigelberner. This is why we can guarantee the 100 per cent purity of every can of Tower Brand Paint. The word pure, according to the 20th Century dictionary, means “free from contact with that which weakens, or pollutes; contains no foreign material; tree from adulteration.” When we 6ay our paint is 100 per cent pure, we mean there is nothing in it that will in any way pollute or weaken the paint. The mixing lias a great deal to do with the purity of our paint. With our modem machinery we ure able to mix the different in¬ gredients thoroughly. It is u very simple matter for any person to buy the different parts that go to make up our pure paint. But do you imagine for one minute that he could mix them as thoroughly as our modern machinery? And aguin, are you sure that vou are getting pure, sublimed white lead, and pure linseed oil ? Can you test them so as to he able totell the difference between the pure and the adulterated ? We have expert, long-experienced chemists who perform th is work for us. They watch every step in the process of manufacture. They are your guides and safeguards. It is through their watchfulness that Tower Brand Paint is always 100 per cent pure. Montgomery Ward & Co. advocated the use of paint years ago. In our Tower Brand we have aint that is guaranteed to be absolutely 100 per , pure. THatGqmumit NO OTHER PAINT GUARANTEE IN THE WORLD IS AS STRONG AS THIS ONE You no doubt have read a great many guarantees of paint, but do you think that there is any guarantee in the world as strong as this one ? We show you step by step the different in¬ gredients that go to make up our Pure Paint. After reading these pages you will know why it is better to use sublimed white lead than corroded white lead. You will know that too much of zinc oxide injures the paint rather than helps it, and that our chemists guide you in seeing that just enough and no more is added. You will know that the use of pure linseed oil instead of substitutes makes the paint stronger and smoother. A great many paint manufacturers, as we will show, use cheap, inferior substitutes, which i3 nothing more nor less than adulterated linseed oil. It is the use of inferior material and unequal proportions that makes paint crack, blister and peel off. We show you why it is better to use pure turpentine and pure Japan dryer. Our guarantee is just as safe, just as dependable, as a United States government bond. Years ago, when the market was full of substitutes, Mont¬ gomery Ward & Co. stood out for pure articles. Just to refresh your memory, look back at some of our old catalogues. You will note that we were among the first to make and advo¬ cate the use of Pure Paint. We did not do this simply became the public asked for it; we started long before they ever seriously thought about it. It is not our policy to wait until the public demands an article, but to get to the point where the public looks to us to decide what they should demand. "We have created a demand for pure paint. The only difference between now and then is that to-day, with the help of experiments and tests, we have perfected a paint that we not only guarantee to be absolutely pure but guarantee it will do the work exactly as we have stated, and therefore we can safely say that our guarantee is the strongest in the world. Sublimed White Lead and Linseed Oil in the proper proportions give this great covering cnpac lty. These ingredients when properly combined, and mixed, give a smoother, freer flow to the paint. The experiments were performed by our chemists. Photograph of a surface fainted with lOO < Pure Paint. This picture was taken after the surface had been exposed about five years. Note smoothness of surface. This surface was painted with about 25 per cent sublimed white lead and 75 per cent zinc oxide. Note cracking. This is due to excessive use of zinc oxide. Our chemist protects you against this cracking, as he watches carefully to see that just enough and no more zinc oxide is added. Section showing the penetration of wood pores by SUBLIMED WHITE LEAD. This photograph i9 magnified GO diameters. Our Tower Brand Paint will not peel off or blister, because it not only adheres to the surface, but penetrates the wood itsdf. Traces of Sublimed White Lead have been found in wood long after it has rotted away. The chemist accepts sublimed white lead because of its superiority. In tests, it Iras shown that it will not become affected by hydrogen sulphide gas, which is plentiful in smoke, sewer gas. and in decaying ani¬ mal •or vegetable matter. It has no chem¬ ical action on the oil. and therefore does not shorten the life of the paint. The fineness of sublimed white lead enables it to be mixed more easily and prevents cak¬ ing in cans. It is non-poisonous. He accepts XX New Jersey zinc oxide because it is the best known material that will perform its functions. It is free from impurity, is not poisonous, and builds up life of the paint. He accepts linseed oil because it forms a skin which holds the pigments together, thus assuring a smooth and lasting sur¬ face. Also, the pure material i9 better able to perform its functions than any adulter¬ ations. He accepts gum turpentine because of Its purity. It is tapped from the pine tree and treated as you would maple syrup. It is received by us and used in this pure state. He accepts Japan Dryer because it in¬ sures uniformity and proper drying, with¬ out detriment to the life of the paint. It increases the gloss and firmness, and in¬ creases the moisture-resisting surface of the paint coat. Our Materials are the Only Ones That Justify Us in Giving so Strong a Guarantee Our chemist has labored many years testing and experimenting with different paint in¬ gredients. Ho has finally demonstrated to his entire satisfaction that the ingredients we now use are the best. If we were to use any other material we would be unable to give a guar¬ antee as strong or binding as this one. What would happen if we were to use pigments other than sublimed white lead, many of them not only being inferior for paint purposes, but also less expensive. The results would he that the paint would not possess the same fineness, beauty of finish, easy working qual¬ ities, covering capacity and thorough incorporation of the pigment and vehicle that enables the paint to penetrate the wood thoroughly giving a smooth and lasting job. The paint would become brittle, crack and rub off or else scale, because of results of chemical action char¬ acteristic to such pigments, or it would be subject to losing its lustre and become discolored, as the result of fuel or other gases common In the atmosphere. Our chemist finds that using any brand of zinc oxide other than XX New Jersey brand is injurious to the life and strength of the paint. It causes the paint to become hard, brittle and often 'crack off. It takes away the strength of the sublimed white lead. It also was found to contain material that affected the strength of the linseed oil. the general result being less covering power than in the XX New Jersey zinc oxide. There is no greater function of the chemist than to see that pure linseed oil is used. If a substitute is used, he can detect it at once, because a substitute of pure linseed oil is nothing more nor less than diluted linseed oil. Diluted linseed oil will naturally not per¬ form the duty it is supposed to as well as the Pure Linseed Oil. The skin film which is formed will not be so lasting, and the sublimed white lead and XX New Jersey zinc oxide will not be bound together so firmly. This produces a paint that will not adhere to the wood. It will also chalk, and above all. its use materially lessens the covering capacity of the paint, as the flow is not so free and easy. Pure gum turpentine is one of the important parts of 100 per cent pure paint. Our chem¬ ist is verv careful to see that no substitutes are used, as they detract from the value of the pigments. Its action in paint is to produce a free and easy flow. Many manufacturers use what is known as wood turpentine. This is made from the stumps of trees, after the pure turpentine has been drawn off. It has a very obnoxious odor, and is easily detected when used. It cannot possibly give as good results as the pure material. Last but by far not the least, is the Japan Dryer. The substitutes of this important mate¬ rial are many, some being extremely poisonous. Many of the substitutes are merely resinous compounds made by adding resin and acids to the original to make it cheaper. It is ex¬ tremely important to have the paint dry properly and uniformly without detriment to the life of the paint and to insure this Japan Dryer is selected with the greatest care. Our chemist guides and protects you in the kind of material used in our Tower Brand Pure Paint. He knows the functions and properties of each part used in its mixture. He discards those that would pollute the mixture in any way and casts them aside, since there is no room for impure materials in the make-up of our Tower Brand Pure Paint. We give too strong a guarantee to take chances on using any substitute, and the only material we dare use must be the purest and best. The chemist watches over this at all timea Every order placed for materials to be used in the mixing of our paint must be examined and tested before it is allowed to be placed in our store rooms. For this reason we are able to give our guar¬ antee. Without the utmost care and vigilance in the finest detail of our mixing process we could not give such a strong guarantee. With the care and close attention we give to guard the purity of our paint, we are willing to challenge the world. There is alsoi a discoloration, owing to the effect of gases that arise from sewerage and de- paying vegetable matter. This photograph was taken three years later, from the same surface as the one above. Note the cracking and “shriveling- up” of the paint. The discoloring has be¬ come very pronounced. You will also note that the surface has become bare in spots. Taken 5 years later from the original surface used in above photos. You will note that parts of surface are completely bare. The paint has not only cracked and peeled off, but in some places just dropped off entirely. The wood has begun to turn black, and traces of rot a re found. _ He rejects corroded white lead, because it will not perform the duties that are de¬ pendent upon it. It will turn black when it comes in contact with hydrogen sulphide gas. It acts upon the oil. which is the life of the paint, thereby destroying the full value of the paint. Because of the acid in corroded white lead, it has an effect upon the tinting colors, causing them to change. Lastly, it is of a poisonous nature. He rejects other brands because of their impurities. They have not been perfected ns yet. They are poisonous, and tend to take away life and hiding capacity of paint. He rejects adulterated oils or gloss oils, because they contain resinous compounds. They become affected by heat, do not hold the pigments together and lessen the cover¬ ing capacity. He rejects wood turpentine because it is not pure. It is made from stumps of trees, cut up and boiled; also from sawdust and shavings. Its process is similar to that of corn syrup or hickory bark syrup. It also has a very bad odor. He rejects resinous compounds because they do not possess the proper drying qualities. They soften the pigments and prove a detriment to the life of the paint. 1 MONTGOMERY WARD & CO.’S PAINT BOOK 3 T ESE pictures were taken in our lactory. They show lour of the important steps in the process of making "Tower Brand ” 10 0 % Pure Paint. Mixing Tower Brand Paint Our Process is the Only One That Will Make Paint Which We Can Guarantee. A Chemist Guards Every Step in the Making of Tower Brand Paint This is Absolutely Necessary in the Making of Paint that Can be Guaranteed as we do Tower Brand M ACHINERY that is perfect, methods that are perfect, processes that are perfect, will do 100 per cent per¬ fect work—IF the materials are perfect and IF the men running the machines—the workmen—are perfect. Now we KNOW that our machinery for making Tower Brand Paint is perfect—the best that is made—because our ma- chines are the net result of generation after generation of paint making. We KNOW that our process is perfect—recognized to be the best in use today— or else we could not afford to make our binding guarantee. We KNOW the materials in Tower Brand Paint are perfect — because we prepare them in our own factory and buy them from reliable manufacturers that guarantee their products. But WHO can say that MEN are perfect -that human hands will not err ? NO ONE. BUT here is what we CAN ao—we CAN and DO employ one of the most expert paint chemists in the land! THIS MAN GUARDS EVERY SINGLE STEP THAT IS TAKENIN THE PROCESS OF MAKING TOWER BRAND PAINT! THEN, when onceina great while a man in the paint factory makes a mistake, quick as a flash that error is CAUGHT! The chemist with never ceasing vigil—with eye and brain that penetrates to the innermost depth of each step in the science of paint making—at once sees the SLIGHTEST ERROR. HE knows who MADE it. He knows WHY that error was made. He knows how to REMEDY it—IT WILL NEVER HAP¬ PEN AGAIN—because workmen in the Tower Brand factory are allowed just one mistake. When a man makes his second mistake he GOES! Thus through this process of paint making, the chemist guards each step. Mistakes there are—but few—because the workmen are skilled and expert. But NEVER does a mistake get out of the shop. NEVER is a can of Tower Brand Paint that leaves this shop, anything but PERFECT. Here are the steps that are taken, and every one of them taken under the sharp searching eye of expert chemists. « FIRST—With the chemist on guard, comes the mixing step. Sublimed white lead and zinc oxide, 50 per cent of each are mixed in huge tanks with pure linseed oil—enough to make a thick, paste consistency. Paddles in these tanks revolve for about two hours, until the substance is thoroughly mixed. SECOND—Under the chemist’s vigil comes the grinding step. The material passes by gravity down a chute into the hoppers, which are directly above the grinders—on the floor below. In these hoppers the mixture is kept in motion and fed slowly into the grinding stones. The grinding stones break up each particle of lead and zinc—and thus each and every particle of the pigment is com¬ pletely incorporated with the linseed oil. THIRD—With the chemist still watching, comes the FINAL mixing step. From the grinders the mixture is pumped into a huge storage tank. Here the remaining portion of linseed oil, the tur¬ pentine, and the Japan dryer is added. And here we have the whole substance of pure paint. FOURTH—With the chemist and paint expert busily employed, comes the tinting and shading step. By gravity the pure paint flows from the storage vat into the tinting and shading tanks. In these the coloring matter is added. This is one of the severe tasks for the paint chemist and the f iaint expert. There are no stated formulas as to how much coloring matter should be added—no aws to follow. Good judgment, clear eyesight, and long experience are necessaryl to do this cor¬ rectly. Only one man in thousands can do this work correctly. Our paint chemist and paint expert are the two men who have succeeded in becoming expert out of the thousands who have tried—and who have failed to become experts. FIFTH—The filling step, with the chemist standing in back of the men. The moving paint (the paint is continually being stirred from the first step to the last) is drawn from the tinting vats by faucets, through screens, into cans. SIXTH—The “capping” step, the chemist inspecting each can. The cans of paint pass along on a conveyor, and while moving, a marvelous machine puts on the covers, and solders them with one motion. SEVENTH—The labeling step, the chemist making sure that each label is correct. Labels are pasted on the cans bearing both the formula and tint of the paint that is contained in the can. EIGHTH—The buying step the chemist still standing guard—guaranteeing your satisfaction. This step is up to you. You have seen this wonderful process, you have seen the absolutely pure materials that go into the paint, you have seen the CHEMIST-THAT- CAN’T-BE-FOOLED, as he watchesevery step, finally you have for your protection the strong binding guarantee that Montgomery Ward & Co. puts on the Tower Brand Paint. This means that one gallon of paint will cover a surface of these dimensions with two coats. Then again, the mate¬ rials are of so strong a nature, and our process so complete, that we guarantee this paint to last longer than any known brand. As we have shown you, our chemists guard carefully the composition of the material, while a practical paint man watches over its tinting and coloring. You know that our paint will not crack, peel, blister or rub off. We have shown you that it is possible for us to guarantee this paint to you simply because of the character of material used by us, and our process of mixing. One hinges upon the other. We could not get along without the zinc oxide, yet, if too much were added, it would take away the whole value of the paint. The same is to be said of each of the other ingredients. Then, again, even if our surface capacity were not so large, you must take into consideration the year service. Think how long tii'- pure product will last Think <>t how much labor you will save. This labor is money to you, and when we save jou lubor. we save you money. This alone is an argument that would convince the most exacting of persons. And. if you're a wise man, you’ll find out why that paint cracked in such a short time, and what paint won’t crack or peel, but will wear down and wear down—giving you service all tlie time—just like tho sole of a good shoe. Now. if you don't know these tilings, we'll tell you. Here is how you cheated yourself—how you can easily cheat yourself on the paint question if you don’t watch out—and how you can avoid cheating yourself in the; future: Cheap paint is not only made of cheap and inferior com position, and substitute pigments, together with adulterated oils. ben/Jne and water, but it is also lacking in method of manufacture. Fine grinding, thorough mixing by power¬ ful machinery and the close supervision of the expert paint chemist are necessary in good paint. Because of the lack of these things, poor paint will crack and scale, and nothing on eartli will prevent it. One hundred per cent pure paint must be made of the materials and by the formula that we show you on the preceding page, which is the result of nearly a century of research and chemical investigating, and Ls based on the very highest authority known to science. This Ls the only formula that will stand all weather testa, the kind you find in our Tower Brand House paint, and which is standard. You can be safe in inlying tills paint, because Montgomery Ward & Co. guar¬ antees it to he 100% pure paint. Besides, Tower Brand House Paint costs less than other pure paints on tho market and even less than some cheap paints!! Think of that!! Do you feel safe in buying Tower Brand House Paint now? Of course you do. Read tlie guarantee again. Two Reasons Why You Pain! Tho first and main reason for using paint is to protect proporty. Structural material, whether wood or metal, un¬ less protected from the elements will quickly decay. Wood will rot, metals will rust. A coat of paint Is a coat of armor- and moro. It protects wood from tho onslaughts of weather and also by being absorbed Into tlie wood pre vents rot and decay. By properly protecting your build lngs with paint, they will last Indefinitely. To do this you must have a good paint. You must not only consider the cost of tlie paint Itself, but also the labor in putting it on and the service it gives. Tlie most important fact Is. to see that you get a point that does not peel, blister, or rub off. as this means a big expense the next time you paint. Tho second reason is to beautify your buildings. This not only increases the value and appearance of your property, but gratifies the noble instinct c*f civilized man for beauty. Pleasant and beautiful surroundings generate a feeling of content that makes life worth living. Again, you may wish to sell tlie property at some future time, and a good job of painting will greatly increase the value. It means half the sale, and at a price far In advance of wliat you would get otherwise. Don’t be deceived when some one tells you he can sell you a paint that is cheaper than 100 per cent pure paint. Y'ou must not only take into consideration the price per gallon, but also how much service you can get per gallon. Do you get 300 to 350 square feet of surface out of a gallon of commou, cheap paint ? Our pure paint is guaranteed to cover this amount of surface. What does this mean to you? Do you take Into consider¬ ation the fact that our paint i 3 composed of materials that are tlie standard of the market, while the cheap paints are composed of materials, tlie composition of which are not good enough for you to know? Some of the cheap paints contain r ' ' vhich I s the oiily tiling the high cost < f living has not affected. If you buy a gallon of cheap paint, you no doubt get one gallon, but do you get one gallon of pure paint ma¬ terial—do you get a full gallon of surface—that is. in com¬ parison to our pure paint, and lastly, do you get a gallon of sendee? Now. just for the sake of argument, we w!ll oppose that the cheaper paint did have the covering capacity that our pure paint lias, would there still be cause for y u to use the cheap paint? No wise man ls going to risk putting a cheap paint on his property, for once this paint has worn off. which it does very quickly, tho surface is exposed to tlie weather. In a very short time he will discover that ills property has begun to rot and wear away, and when this happens, it is not long before the property must all l>e repaired. Just think what it means, then, to use our 100 per cent pure paint, which protects tho surface for years. Estimate the Amount oi Paint you Need Add the number of feet front and rear to the number of feet in length (on each side). Multiply the total by the height in feet and this will give tlie total number of square feet of surface. Then divide by 3 00 and the result is the number of gallons. One gallon of Montgomery Ward & Co.'s Tower Brand Mixed Paint will cover from 3 0O to 350 square feet, two coats, or about COO feet, one coat. Here is an example: Front . 20 feet Bear . 20 feet Sido . 30 feet Sido . 30 feet Total .100 Multiply by height. 18 Divide by .300 1800 square feet About 0 gallons This rule will vary a trifle, owing to tho condition of the wood. If it has lieen painted once or if the surface is smooth and hard, less than Hie above quantity will do. If tlie building is new and the lumber lias never been painted, a slightly greater amount will oe needed. Weight of Paints If you order merchandl.se to the total weight of 100 lbs. or more you secure advantage of the hundred pound rate. As you doubtless know, it cost9 just as much to ship 2 5 pounds by freight as it does 100 pounds. Estimate the total weight of the paints you order from this table, then fill out your shipment to 100 pounds with groceries or other merchandise. 1 gal. Tower Brand House Paint weighs 14% lbe. 1 gal. If any room is looking a little shabby give its floor, woodwork and furniture a coat of varnish. nw.&cos HIGH GRADE VARNISHES HIGH GRADE VARNISHES OUR VARNISH DEPARTMENT is now under the direct super¬ vision of our chief chemist, insuring varnishes of merit and uni¬ formity. Our prices show us a very small per cent of profit, and quality considered, we are giving the best value in the country. WE HAVE NOW SECURED the same uniformity, the same high, unsurpassed standard in our varnishes, that has so long characterized our paints. EXTRA LIGHT HARDOIL FINISH MontgomervWard Co CHICAGO & KANSAS CITY Ijjp" i YOU CANNOT SECURE VARNISHES ANYWHERE that are any purer, any more carefully made, than those we offer you. Give; |them a test and you will find that they will wear as well or better than varnishes for which you have paid from 5 0 cents to one dol¬ lar a gallon more. COMPARE PRICES and you will see that you can secure nearly two gallons of varnish here for what a single gallon will cost you over the dealers’ counter. In the following list will be found varnishes suitable for all pur¬ poses for either new or old work. It will pay you to carefully se¬ lect the one varnish that is best suited for the work you have in hand. GENERAL DIRECTIONS To obtain a polished finish, the varnish must first be rubbed, then it must be allowed to stand nut less than 2 4 hours, then polished with Furniture Polish. Apply the polish with very soft cotton waste or cheese cloth. Rubbing is done with rubbing felt and fine pumice stone, using either water or oil; dip the rubbing felt lightly in the water or rubbing oil, then dip the moist felt in the pumice stone and rub the surface up and down with the grain of the wood. A smoother or more velvety dull rubbed finish can be obtained by using the rubbing oil instead of water. HOW TO FINISH NEW WORK OPEN GRAIN WOODS, SUCH AS OAK, ASH, ETC., must be filled with Paste Filler. You will find our Hardwood Paste Filler described on another page. This filler must be given not less than 24 hours to dry before any varnish is applied. For close grain woods such as pine, maple, cypress, etc., apply first a coat of liquid wood filler which you will find described on another page. Allow at least 36 hours to dry, after which apply the varnish in regular manner and follow directions regarding particular varnishes used as to drying, rubbing, etc. DIRECTIONS FOR REFINISHING OLD WORK See that the work is perfectly clean and free from any grease or dirt before finishing and then lightly sandpaper the surface to be refinished. To obtain a nice, full lustre the varnish used should not be a Rubbing or Polishing varnish, unless a polished finish is desired. NOTE THE CAP ON THIS CAN The varnish can illustrated above shows the new patent cap we are using. It entirely does away with corks, plugs, etc. It protects the contents while in use, and if only part of the contents is used that remaining in the can can be kept without danger of evaporation Building Varnishes Exterior Right here, in the making of building var¬ nishes, the maker displays his rarest art. Here he must attain varnish that will give a finish of clear, mirror like beauty, and with this fine finish he must combine great wearing qualities, for building varnishes are subjected to hard wear. They must stand up under this hard wear and remain attractive for years. No line of Building Varnishes has met with greater success, has stood up better un¬ der a thousand trying tests, has given more universal satisfaction, than those put out over the name of Montgomery Ward & Co. Try them; your satisfaction will be as great, as genuine, as that which has been expressed by so many others. A9f)75-M. W. & CO.’S EXTERIOR SPAR VARNISH. For finishing Outside Doors. At every step the hard, steel shod heel of a man’s shoe strikes a ninety pound blow. Furniture is scraped and dragged back and forth over it. The floor is often scrubbed. Small particles of sand are dropped and ground into it. Think how good a varnish must be to withstand this everyday use and abuse. We make special mention of our Diamond “W” Floor Varnish, because after numerous experiments we have perfected a varnish that it will be economy to use on any floor in your house. We put our repu¬ tation back of this varnish and guarantee it WILL WITHSTAND THE HARDEST WEAR you could possibly give it, without breaking the surface or marring the finish. You can dent the wood, but you cannot break, blister or peel the varnish. You can allow water to stand for 24 hours on this varnish and it will still retain the same finish as when first applied. Such is the floor varnish you have wanted, and such is the varnish we offer you under our Diamond W Brand. Retail value, $2.50 per gallon. A 9978—Diamond **W" Floor Varnish 5 Gal. Cans 1 Gal.
