" EDVVaBD dunscomb, Clerk of the District of Neiv-York' THE FOLLOWING IS A REVIEW OF THE WORK, fJ!OM THF. MEDICAL REPOSIfOET, NO. XLl. Topographical Information concerning the City of New-York. " An Alphabetical Table of the fituation and extent of the different Streets, Roads, Lanes, Wharves, Piers, Slips, and Bafons, as well as of the Public Buildings, has been lately publifhed, in a convenient pamphlet form, by Mr. John Low. This has been ex- amined by the Street-Commiffioner, and is the best defcription of thofe parts of the city, in its prefent enlarged and growing condition. This publication will be highly ferviceable lo the inhabitants, and more efpecially to flrang- ers, by giving them, in an eafy manner, a correft idea of the city of New-York." ADVERTISEMENT. IN confequence of the frequent inquiries made by the citizen, as well as the ftranger, foe asany of the new ftreets, and the want of a tho- rough knowledge of them by the inhabitants in general, has induced the Publifher to prcfent TO the public the following account. As a great many new ftreets have been laid out, and many ufthe former namrs altered, it is prel'umed the following table will be found ul'eful, and wor- thy of attention. All the (trcets marked thus * generally, have no numbers, but few honl'es, and many of them not yet opened, and arc by a late aft of the Cor- poration liable to be altered, as to their fitua- tion and boundaries. For the more eafy accommodation of the ftranger, the ftreets from Graiid-ftreet, Bowery Road^ Broad-Way and Greenwich-ftreet, are defignatedby Ul, 2d, 3d, &c. turning to the right or left, and the parallels in which they run mentioned ; for inftance to find Seaver-lane, it is the firft turning from the Battery on the left in Broad-Way, Beaver-ftreet the firft on the right, &c. Eaft and Harriot-ftreet tuns along from A 3 vi Corlears-Hook, up the Eaft-river, as We!i does the North-river ; making the Eaft and Weft boundary of the city, as South-ftreet does the South. The different Piers from White- hall Dock, are by the Corporation intended to be numbered, begining at White-hall, and fo on towards Gorlears-Hook. In this edition it was thought proper to give the names and fituation of the Public Buildings, . as they are not correftly mentioned in any oth- er publication. As this table has been infpedl- od by the Street Gommiffioner, it may be pre- fumed corred. JOHN LOW. ^5^3°" As there are but few houfes on what is called the Commons, and thofc generally in- habited by thofe whofe bufiness is done in the city, we have thought it improper to extend this Table farther at prefent, than Bauk-ftreet on the -weft, and Sprucc-ftreet on the eaft, ac- cording to the Corporation map. Should the progrefs of increafe continue at the rate of 5 per cent per annum, the popula- tion of this City in 1855 will amount to 705, 650, a rate exceeding- the doubling of our num. her every twenty years, during the period of a Century. J. P. ^Smith's History of New- Tor k, Lon, Ed- 4tt. 1757, page 96. 70 The following Statistical calculations are from the Daily Advertiser of 1806, as il- luftrative of the census publiftied this year. By the enumeration of the inhabitants of this city, recently publiftied, the progress of popu- lation for the lall five years appears to be at "the rate of 25 per cent. Should our city con- tinue to increafe in the fame proportion during the prefent century, the aggregate number, at its clofe, will far exceed that of any other city in the old world, Pekin not excepted : as will appear from the following table. Progress of population in the city of New-York, computed at 24 percent, every 5 years. 1 805 75,770 1810 - 94,715 1815 - 110,390 nib - 147,987 1825 - 184.903 1830 - 231,223 1835 - 289,035 1840 - 361,293 1845 - 451,616 1850 - 564,520 1855 - - 705,650 1860 - 882,062 1865 - - 1,102,577 1870 - . 1,378,221 1375 - - 1,722,776 1880 - - 2,153,47» 71 V885 - - 2,691, SSr 1890 - - 3,364,796 1895 - - 4,205,995 1900 - - 5,257,493 From this table it appears, that the popufc tion of this city, fixty years hence, will con- iiderably exceed the reputed population of the cities of Paris and London. Cities and nations, however, like individuals, experience their rife, progrefs, and decline. It is hardly probable that New- York will be fo highly favoured as to prove an exception. Wars, peftilence, and political convullions, muft be our lot, and be taken into calculation. With every allowance, however, for the " numerous ills which flelh is heir to," from our advantageous maritime fit- nation, and the increafe of agriculture and' commerce, our numbers will in all probability, at the end of this century, exceed thofe of any other city in- the world, Pekin not excepted. From the data here furnifhed, the phyfician, the politician, the financier, and above all the fpeculator in town-lots, (a fubjeft, to our fliame be it fpoken, which abforbs every generous paf- fion) may draw various and interefting infer- ences. AgainCV the monopoly of public property br the rich, the Corporation ought to have a ver" jealous eye. As that body has the exciufivc right of difpofing of what is called the Com* Ttions^ it would be well fpr them to encourage 72 the induRnous Mechanic, ?s well aa the raore opulent to IKare in the fcheme of population^ by purchafe,or long leafes of fmall lots for the purpofe of building on. Such care would not only increafe the population, but without the aid of the public purfe, enfure an alfylum to the exile, in time of terror of the Yellow Fever, if ever fuch fhould again vifit this growing city.
