This Flushing Syphon has excejdional advantages where very flat seA\ers are nnaA'oidable, a Self-acting < 'hamber being placed wherever a slight fall is obtainable, and in the act of discharging from this first ( ’hamber forces the sewage in a hnlk along the flat jiortion into a secoml, and so on. I The aV)ove, in addition to containing all the advantages of Fikld’s old Pattern Flushing Cisterns, as hitherto made by J. Stoxk cfc Co., and which obtained the Gold Medal at the International Health Exhibition, London, 1884, has been specially designed to overcome the objections which were found still to exist in same on account of failures in action when not absolutely vertical, owing to carelessness in fixing, or to subsidence of masonry, brickwork, or other support, besides which, owing to the taper form of discharge leg and peculiar shape of lip, which does not materially obstruct the w.aterway as in old pattern, it will now discharge the contents of Flushing Chamber with much greater velocity, and the action is rendered absolutely certain even with a drop by drop supply, whilst no auxiliary small sjqihons or air pipes in trapping li )X or elsewhere (almost certain, after a while, to choke) are required, as in other Automatic 8yphnns, though nmitterl to be shown in illustrritions of same. ■ A.-'T' A.'T' A ' A'T- A^'^ A^y'* DESCRIPTION OF ACTION. The Flushing Syphon A is fitted into a galvanized iron tank B. The longer limb of the syphon just dips about ^ of an inch into the water in the lower tank or trapping liox at C, which is kept at its jiroper level In' a weir at D. The action is as follows : — M"hen the water, fed from inlet or tap E, rises to the top of the longer liml> of the syphon, by means of the patent lip of peculiar form, instead of running down the sides as in other Flushing Syphons, which require an auxiliary small Syphon or air pipe to make them start, it is caused to accumulate above the top of discharge leg, until it reaches a certain point, when it starts off with a rush, and the corrugations in lip divide the water into several streams, which displaces a large (juantity of air in discharge leg, thereby starting the S 3 >phon, which emjities the tank with enormous rapidity into the drain or other receptacle to be flushed Cyi>hi;i' Code ... picaroon No. 9,204. Requiring- NO REPACKING to Stuffing- Box, fitted with SPINDLE which will NEITHER BEND NOR BREAK, AND UNWEARABLE FACES. ADOPTED BY THE PRINCIPAL LONDON WATER COMPANIES, &c. \^Sertioii E, 8th Edition. A CUN K/iCTAL SPRING RINC B HYDRAULIC PACKING FOR VALVES OVER 12 INCHES DIAMETER ln^teaJ of the ordinary lioiii]! parked st lifting liox, we fit in its jilaee hydraulic jiacking id' a special material, and below and independent of this, we fit a hydraulic cupped leatherand spring ring ; either of these packings will, in ordinary use, last the life of the valve, but in case the bottom packing should, from some exceptional cause, become imperfect the top hydraulic jiack- ing would still keep the stuffing box perfectly tight. In small size Sluice Valves, say 12 ins. diam- eter and under, the leather tits a collar formed on the spindle, whilst in larger sizes it suiTounds the plain part of the spindle just above the thread, this will he readily under- stood by referring to the enlarged sections of upper jiart of valves shown above. As this inijiroveil mode of packing will last, without renewal, as long as the valve itself, there is NO NEED OF ANY REPACKING whatever, conse([uently all exjiensc and iiiconvenience in breaking up roadway, excavating and making good ground sui-facc (an absolute necessity when re-packing ordinary sluice valves) is avoided. The spindles arc made of PATENT ' BRONZE cast ujion STEEL CORES 1 pas.sing RIGHT THROUGH the centre of sjiindlcs, so that fhev ]>osscss ] tin STRENGTH AND STIFFNESS , OF STEEL, with the INCORROD- . IBLE PROPERTIES OF BRONZE, and will NEITHER BEND i NOR BREAK. ! T'he FACES of tin i valves are made of PATENT BRONZE, which greatly adds to I their durability. It will he readily seen that by iLsing the Sluice Valves above described the SAVING to Water Companies will be very great, in fact, the cost of once rcjiacking an ordinary sluice \alve will more than ]iav the extra FIRST COST of our patent VALVES he- I sides AVOIDING the inconvenience in BREAKING UP ROADWAY, Ac., as before pointed out. I FOR PRICES SEE OPPOSITE PAGE. FOR 12-INCH VALVES AND UNDER DESCRIPTION. J. STONE «t CO.'S NEW PATENT “METROPOLITAN” SLOICE VALVES. The following copies of a few of the Testimonials we have received will clearly show the great advantages possessed by our Patent “Metropolitan” Sluice Valves over the ordinary Sluice Valves, as sold by other Makers : — Kent Wateh Works, Deeteokd. Dear Sirs, — In reply to your enquiry, I beg to state that the cup leather packing introduced into your “ Metropolitan ” Sluice Valve for the last five years has proved very efficient ; during' this period no re-packing has been required. Yours truly, (Signed) W. MORllIS, Kngineer. 55, Parliament Street, Westminster, S.W. Oenti.emen, — In reply to your enquiry, your “ ^letropolitan ” Sluice Valve, which T have used now for some years for various town water supplies, gives entire sati.sfaction. The hydraulic leather which you have introduced into the cover, obviating the necessity of periodically opening the ground to re-pack the stuffing hox, constitutes, in my opinion, a great improvement, and effects a considerabb- >aving of expense to water undertakings. Yours truly, (Signed) JABEZ CHURCH. Torqv.vy Water Works. Dear Sirs, — In reply to yours of the 16th ult., I have much pleasure in stating that your “Metropolitan"’ Sluice Valves have given every satisfaction. The hydraulic leather under the ordinary stuffing box is very useful, adding to the life of the packing, and enabling it to be replaced under pressure. Yours faithfully, 'Signed) THOMAS S. WICKS, A.M.I.C.E., Engineer. Atherstone Water Works. (tENTLEMEN, — Your Patent “ Metropolitan ’’ Sluice Valves have been at work both at Atherstone and Melton Mowbrav Water Works for some time, and give every satisfaction. I may add that the same sort of Sluice Valves are being fixed in the ilains of the Polesworth Water Works. I am. Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, (Signed) W. R. H. CHIPPERFIELD, A.M.I.C.E., Resident Engineer for the Works. Lamketh Water Works. We are authorised to state that our Sluice Valves (Patent Metropolitan) have heen used for some past, and are still being used by the lambeth Water Works Company. Pelham Chamrers, Angel Row, Nottingham. Hear Sirs, — I have used your “Metropolitan ” Sluice Valves at many Works, and they have given me very great satisfaction. I am, Yours very trulv, (Signed) W. H'. RADFORD, A.M.I.C.E., A.R.I.B.A., M.S.I. Grosvenou Chamrers, 59, Corroration Street, Birmingham. Drar Sirs, — In reply to the enquiry you have made of me with regard to your “Metropolitan” Sluice Valve I have much pleasuri' in stating that these Valves are used in the Uckfield Water Works and act with every satisfaction. There is no doubt in my mind of the advantages of this Valve over the ordinary Sluice Valve, especially when the mains are under great pressure. Y’ours faithfully, (Signed) H. STONE & CO.’S STRONG IIVIRROVEO PATENT CHARCOAL VENTILATOR Tliis is of a very simple and eflicieiit kind. It will be seen by llie illustration that the ap])aratus is divided into two parts by a partition, which, however, does not reach lyiite to the top ; on f)ne side of the partition being the dirt box, and on the other the chamber (•ontaining the charcoal tray. Tlie sewer gas passes through the charcoal in tlie tray, and tlience over the top of the partition and tlirougli the grating. The water passes through the grating, tills tlie dirt box, and runs over tlie top of tlie partition, down the sides of the charcoal chamber, where it passes, by means of a cbannel round tbe bottom of the tray, into the sewer. The bottom (d tlie tray is always trapped with water, so that the Avlude of the sewer gas must pass through the chare 'lal, the tray coiitaining wliiili is made with a wire-work bottom, so as to expose the charcoal as much as possilile. As supplied to the principal Sewage Works throughout the world. Ser/i„n E, Sth EdUum.^ .1. STONK CO,. DKIO'FO I{ D, LONDON, S. K. 1!) No. 9,271. LATHAM PATENT SPIRAL CHARCOAL VENTILATOR. The only appliance that fulfils all the conditions required for a perfect Sewer Ventilator. 'I'hi.s vc'iitiliitor i.s fri'i' from till' ilofccts iiisrii'U'iil)!!* from other cli irco.il vent il itors, anil its simiilicity of coiisli-urtioTi ami economy of mainteiianen are points whieli will further reeommeml it to [uihlir attention. 'I'ho lar^'or size.s of these veiitilator.s eomhine in themselves manhole cover, lamphole, ami ventilator, while the smaller ones fullil the two hitter ofliees. 'I’he ailvanta^i's of this ventilator are ; — 1st. If the ehaieoal eoneretes on the trays, or its pores e-et tilled with dust drawn in from the street, no impediment is offered to ventilation, as in this ventilator there is a free communication between the .sewer and the e.vternal atmo.sphere. 'ind. 'I’hat the eh.arcoal is protected from rain or water leaking' through the joints of the cover, or falling through the open gratings ; eonseiiuently it will retain its offieiency for a long period. 3rd. 'The pas.sage provideil for the ox'ertlow water from the dirt ho.\ is not depemlcnt upiJii traps (jr any mechanical device to keep it in order, while, at the same time, the e.scaping gases cannot possibly pass by the sides of the tray, or in any other way, without hi'ing brought into contact with the charcoal. 'I’he action of this ventilator may he e.vplained as follows : — The dirt box being [daced in position, and the spiral tray having been tilled with wood charcoal (broken the size of filbert nuts) and screwed into the dirt box, and the cover being [ilaceil in position, any mud or dirt [lassing through the open grating will fall ilirectly into the diit box, and any water entering .'it the open grating would tiist till the dirt box, but when it had risen as high as the slot communicating with the upper jioi'tion of the s[)ii'al ti'ough, it would overflow by this channel, passing under the trays of charcoal to the sewer. The gases ascending from the sewer, in obedience to well-known l.'iws, have always a constant tendency to ascend, and as the charcoal of the spii'al tray is laid at a considerable angle to the direction of the escaping gases, these gases impinge ujion the charcoal at every point of the ;i,scent. Any gases ascending hv the sjiiral trough, provideil for conveying away the overtlow water, are brought into coidact with the charcoal, just as it they a,scended by any other part of the apparatus. In this ventilator, if the trays do not tit tightlvat the sides, no escape of gas will arise, as the trough for eonveying away the outflow w,itcr projects into the ventilator, and any gases e.seaiiing by the side of the tiay will he thrown again.st the projecting trough above, and so into the ma.ss of charcoal. The circular form of the pa.s,sage through the ventilators, moreover, causes the gases to move by a series of dellections, all of which tend to bring them more intimately into contact with the charcoal, and the trays for containing the charcoal are perforated, consequently there is nothing to interfere with the ready absorption of the gas by the ch:ircoal. The larger size of the,se ventilators combines a maidiole cover, lamphole, and ventilator, for, by removing the cover, and withdrawing the charcoal, it forms a lamphole, and by further withdrawing the dirt box, it becomes a manhole. The arrangement that each part is separately moveable has its advantages, as the chaicoal and dirt cannot get mixed. The dirt bo.x can be speedily emptied, by removing and capsizing it. The aiqiaratus is easily fixed, and is economical in cost, as a much i-inallcr amount of brickwork is required wlicn it is used in connection with a manhide than is required in some other forms of ventilator. These ventilators are also constructed to be ajiplied in connection with ventilating pipes of house drains, for it should he thoroughly understood that, except in oa.ses where cliarcoal is u.sed at the top of a ventilating pipe, water is formed by the condensation of the vajiour ascending the pipes in cold weather, and which, trickling down the sides of the pijics, will destroy the charcoal ; hut in this ventilator a spiral trough carries away the condensed water to the sewer.
