A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ! Please Read This Over Carefully QUALITY — Our mantels are made in large quantities, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture and still maintaining the excellent quality for which our goods are noted throughout the country. LUMBER — The lumber used in our mantels is very carefully selected for the best possible grain effects that nature can produce, and is thoroughly seasoned and kiln-dried before enter- ing into the construction of our mantels. CARVINGS — The carvings are executed in the most artistic manner and are in keeping with the general design of the mantel upon which they are used, and are in most cases carved out of the solid wood. We do not use composition or imitation carving, as same can never be made to have the rich appearance and the durability that is so essential to a beautiful mantel. MIRRORS — We use nothing but French bevel plate mirrors in all of our mantels except in a few designs in which the bevel is not at all appropriate or in keeping with the design of mantel. Under each cut will be found the size of mirror used. FINISH — The finish on our goods is one of the features that makes our line so popular, as we use on all our mantels (except where otherwise stated) nothing but our very best piano polish finish, which is noted for its brilliant lustre and excellent durability. SIZES — Our mantels are made five feet wide, which is the standard size. They can, however, be made several inches wider by extending the wall plates. For this we make no extra charge when stated in order. SPECIAL SIZES — We would be pleased to quote prices on mantels smaller or larger than stock sizes, also on architects’ or special designs submitted to us. FANCY WOODS and finishes, such as genuine mahogany, cherry, bird’s-eye or curly maple, curly birch, white and gold, etc., made to order at an additional cost, depending upon the mantel wanted. Special prices on same will be made upon application. ENAMELED TILES — We carry nothing but the very best quality of enameled tile on the market, and we have a full stock of the latest colors. Our stock consists of various shades of green, blue, pink, olive, dark wine, old gold, old rose, white, etc., and also a very large assortment of the most beautiful mottled tiles that are to be had anywhere. When tiles are ordered and the colors that are preferred are not specified in order, we send colors that harmonize best with the mantel selected. *) o MOUNTING TILE IN SLABS ready to set. When prepared in this manner, they can be set in place by any one and do not require the services of a skilled mechanic. The beauty of a mantel depends largely upon how the tile facing and hearth are set, and if you desire a nice smooth job of tile work and cannot command the services of a good tile setter, we recommend that you have us mount the tile for you. (For prices and illustration, see page 14.) FLOOR TILES — We are prepared to furnish tile for doors, porches, vestibules, bathrooms, halls, etc., and will upon application make quotation on tile floors and furnish colored plans showing designs as per our quotations, when the correct measurements of space to be tiled are given. We suggest that you send an exact diagram showing si/es. GRATES — Believing, as we do, that the grate used in any mantel is one of the most important parts of it, you will note that we offer for your selection a larger line of grates than any other firm, and we devote more space to the description and merits of same, so that our customers will be able to know the exact grade and quality of the grates they buy and know what to expect of them. OUTFITS — We have used every effort to make our catalogue the most explicit mantel catalogue ever issued, and we think you will agree with us that we have accomplished that end by quoting the mantels with the various Outfits, from the very finest on the market to the most inexpensive. We give a full and complete description of each and every outfit on pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. It is only necessary for you to read over these descriptions carefully and decide which outfit you think best suited to your wants, then turn to the mantels, and you will line! them priced with the outfit you have selected. FIRE BRICK Outfits “P”, “V”, “J” and “N” do not include the fire brick, as same can usually be bought in your town for less than the freight would amount to, but in cases where you cannot purchase fire brick in your town, we will furnish same at $2.00 per mantel extra. Outfits “R”, “S”, “T”, “U”, “A”, “B”, “W”, “X”, “O”, “Y” do not require fire brick. (See description pages, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.) FULL AND COMPLETE DIRECTIONS for setting mantel, grate and tile work will be found on page 4. By following these directions any one can set up their own mantels if they so desire, as they are explicit in every detail. CHIMNEY BREASTS— Always build your chimney breast as near five feet wide as possible, as that is the standard width of all mantels. Leave the opening (in the chimney) for the grate 30 inches high, 14 inches deep and either 24 inches or 30 inches wide, according to the outfit you select. 4 .. DIRECTIONS .. . FOR SETTING Wood Mantels, Tile and Fireplaces See that your chimney is well built and sound, and an arch is turned for the hearth. If brick arch is not turned, fill in with concrete composed of cinders and cheap cement to about one inch below floor — but we would recommend the turning of brick arch. In the box with the tile will be found a diagram showing size, and how the hearth is to be laid out. Now lay out the hearth, as per diagram, and get the exact size of same, and cut out the floor to fit hearth, allowing one-fourth of an inch for spreading. Put all the tile to soak in clean water, letting them remain there an hour, and then lay them out to drip. Now mix up some good Portland cement (one-third cement and two-thirds clean sharp sand), and put this on the concrete, leveling same by using a straight-edge, with notches cut out one-fourth of an inch at each end. This straight- edge should be three inches longer than hearth. Now commence at back of hearth and draw straight-edge forward or backward until cement is perfectly smooth and level. Now lay in tile as per diagram, commencing in the front. After the tile are all laid and fitted nicely to place, hammer them down lightly to level of floor with a small block of wood about twelve by four inches. When you have them all nicely in place, level and evenly spaced, mix up a little pure Portland cement, quite thin, and wash it over the surface, working it into the joints where needed. After this has partially set wipe the tile perfectly clean with sawdust or a damp sponge. All of the cement should be cleaned off face of tile, as it is very difficult to remove after it has set. Let cement set thoroughly before proceeding. Now plug wall and screw up mantel fast to wall. Having done this, build a brick arch back of mantel, leaving one and a quarter inches for cement and tile. Now take a straight-edge, one inch longer than mantel opening, and place your cement on arch, then draw straight-edge upwards until cement is perfectly smooth. Now put up tile facing, commencing at bottom, and tamp each tile as you put it up. Having done this, let facing set for a few hours. Now tie four wires, about twelve inches long, on grate frame, and place frame in front of facing and drive four spikes into fireplace, to which fasten your wires; now set basket in fireplace and build firebrick to fit basket. HOW TO MIX CEMENT FOR PUTTING UP TILE FACING. Om -third Portland cement, one-third slack lime, one-third sand. Mix together thoroughly. DIRECTIONS When the lower back damper is closed the draft must necessarily pass through the body of the fire. When it is necessary to check the fire, open this damper. The draft then takes the free and easy course, up through the hack Hue, in preference to a more difficult one — through the grate. When this damper is closed the superheated air, passing through llie narrow opening in the top of hack tile, produces as near a perfect combustion of the otherwise escaping gases as it is possible to obtain practically. The Damper system as applied to the New Columbian Grates gives the user absolute con- trol of the fire; thereby providing an easy way to increase or lessen the heat as required. This is an important feature that cannot be accom- plished in any other make of grates — we accept none. It also affords an excellent system of ven- tilation, as well as collecting the cold air from the floor and carrying the same into the air chamber back of the fire tile, where it becomes super-heated and passes above the line of the fire, producing perfect combustion of the gases which otherwise would escape into the flue unconsumed. This consumption of the gases adds very materially to the heating qualities, as well as to the economy, cheerfulness and cleanliness. We would call your special attention to the position occupied by the top tile, which acts as a check and prevents the heat from passing direct into the flue. It also insures the passing of the super-heated air directly over the line of the fire, producing greater benefit for the fuel consumed. By opening the lower damper when shaking the grate all dust is drawn in- to the chamber back of the fire and then discharged into the main flue. The upper damper is controlled by a regulating de- vice, which can be set at any point to meet the require- ments of the flue to which the grate is attached. It can be closed absolutely tight when not in use, thereby prevent- ing soot or other dirt from entering the room. The New Columbian Grates are constructed in parts and bolted firmly together with a view of providing for the necessary expansion and contraction. This is an im- portant feature that is never adopted in cheap grates, and where provision is not made for expansion, it very often causes the displacement of the tile facing. All tile linings used in the Columbian Grates are made with a view of great durability, they are carefulh set in asbestos cement, which insures an absolutely tight fire chamber. The basket that is used in the No. 482 Club House Grate stands on four legs, similar to basket shown with No. 68 Open Club House Grate on page 14, and the fire bricks must be built to fit snugly up to the basket. When properly set this makes a good large fireplace, and is adapted to either soft coal or wood. Regarding Fire Brick, see page 3. The basket for this grate stands on four legs, and the fire brick should be built up to fit snugly around same.
