Putlisked for Journalistic and Historical Reference THE PUBLISHING SOCIETY OF NEW YORK 41 LAFAYETTE PLACE PREFACE THIS volume is a compilation of portraits of representative and active Republicans of the State of New York, with succinct personal records. It is issued for the twofold purpose of pre- serving the likeness and more essential personal particulars of the contemporary leaders of a great party in a great State, and of present- ing these likenesses and particulars in a compact and convenient form for ready reference. The portraits, authentic in every case, and in nearly all instances personally furnished (from the latest photographs) by the indi- viduals represented, will be found especially serviceable for reproduction by newspaper editors and others. The plan of the book entirely excludes biographies of a formal char- acter. To the rule of condensation thus adopted no exception has been made; the personal notices of the President of the United States and others high in official position or leadership being prepared on the same principle of brevity as those of members of the party whose careers are still "in the making." It is believed that the volume will be found unusually reliable for a work of this class, materials having been invariably sought at first hand. Some omissions have been unavoidable, owing to the failure of individuals, though repeatedly applied to by the publishers to supply the necessary photo- graphs and information.
