Translations of the Scriptures INTO The Languages of China AND Her Dependencies TABULATED TO DECEMBER 31. 19JB BY REV. JOHN R. HYKES, D.D., Agent of the American Bible Society in China. AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY NEW YORK Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2017 with funding from Columbia University Libraries https://archive.org/details/translationsofOOhyke Foreword VERSIONS OF THE SCRIPTURES IN CHINESE A similar list was tabulated just twenty years ago and published in the Annual Report of the American Bible Society for 1896. At that time there were a number of old missionaries still living who had taken part in the translation of the Scriptures into the principal dialects or who could give information as to some versions not obtainable elsewhere. Advantage was taken of this when the compiler made out the first list. Drs. Muirhead, Edkins, Martin and Blodget severally checked the lists of the Classical and the Mandarin versions ; Drs. Noyes and Henry wrote a history of the Canton Colloquial Bible; Drs. Hartwell and Woodin revised the table of Foochow Colloquial translations; Dr. Farnhamand Ven. Archdeacon Thomson did the same for the Shanghai vernacular and Dr. D. B. McCartee (then at a very ad- vanced age) who, with Bishop Russell, made the first translations into the Ningpo dialect, supplied valuable information which he only could give. In the present list all inaccuracies and omissions have been corrected so far as ascertained ; and the table ha.s been brought down to the end of 1915 so as to s 3 ’'nchro- nize with the closing year of the Society’s Centenary. iii.
