The composition of Patton’s White is printed on every can, and is strictly pure white lead and zinc oxide, both doubly ground in strictly pure linseed oil to impal- pable fineness, with silica. Theoretically and practically this is the most durable paint that can be made. It is packed for shipment as follows: In I, 2, 3 and 5 lb. tin cans, 100 lbs. to the case, either assorted or any one sized can. In tin cans, 8 i2)^-lb. tins per case. The tints are made by adding a certain quantity of the tinting colors to a quantity of Master Painters’ Finishing White Lead. This is a new principle in the mixing of tinted paints, and one that is particularly adapted to the requirements of those who wish to mix the colors for themselves. There can be no mistake in the mixing, and the colors come exactly as you expect them. The tints are scientifically compounded to go with a definite quantity of the Master Painters’ Finishing White Lead, and in this combination you get the best paint it is possible to make, for it is the Patton Paint, made in the Patton propor- tions, and is unrivaled for beauty, durability, and covering powers. Its color, a slate, prevents its use except for roofs, bridges, etc. There are other colors offered as “graphite paint,’’ but if the color is materially different from the natural graphite color, then so much foreign matter has been added as to destroy its real value. Graphite, being a form of carbon, cannot be affected by acid, alkali, gas, or any solution known to chemists. It has remarkable fire-proofing properties, and has been subjected for months to acids, alkalies, water, brine, and sulphur fumes, withstanding them all. It will cover much more surface than metallic oxide — one gallon of this paint, when mixed ready for use, covering from six to seven hundred feet of iron surface. Roof painting is a subject that does not receive the attention it should, and often a good iron or tin roof is ruined for the lack of paint, when ten years might be added to its life at a very small expense. The life of a metal roof is good paint, and it is therefore very essential that good material should be used. Some “graphite paints” on the market contain no graphite whatever. Patton’s Sun-Proof Graphite Paint is the best it is possible to manu- facture. There is but little difference in price between Patton’s and the other kind. In this shingle stain we offer the trade an entirely new system of shingle stain- ing or tinting. Briefly, it is based on the principle which we employ in our Master Painters’ Tinting Colors. A certain quantity of the Paste Shingle Stain is mixed with another definite quantity of our Tor-On Shingle Oil, and this combination produces just what you want in the way of a liquid shingle staining or tinting mixture which is perfectly adapted for the work it is required to do. It has taken long experience in the manufacture of shingle stains and a very definite knowledge of the needs of the trade and some very ingenious planning to bring out this new method of saving time, trouble, and money both to the trade and to those who do the work of painting and staining. The value of Patton’s scheme will be apparent at a glance. The dealer, instead of buying a dozen barrels of different colors of shingle stain, simply buys one of our steel drums filled with Patton’s Tor-On Shingle Oil and with it an outfit of the various tints in paste form of Patton’s Shingle Oil Colors. The shingle oil in the steel barrel can not evaporate and the paste shingle colors can not deteriorate. According to the old method the dealer had to buy large quantities of liquid in which the stain was already mixed. This necessitated his keeping in stock more than he could expect to sell for a long time. Part of it evaporated and the rest of it settled to the bottom, and the colors lost their luster and tinting power by standing in the liquid. According to our plan you have to buy only the one barrel, which is made of steel, and from which the shingle oil can not evaporate, and you buy the shingle colors in paste form, ready ground, in cans in which the colors can not deteriorate, and when a customer desires a certain amount of liquid shingle stain, there is nothing to do but to measure out the quantity of shingle oil needed for the number of feet to be cov- ered, and to take down from the shelf the cans of shingle colors that are needed for the tint and strength of color desired. The customer takes them home and mixes them when he is ready to apply the shingle stain. You are left with clean hands and a clear conscience — clean hands, because you have not had to stir up the settlings from the bottom of a dirty barrel; a clear conscience, because you have given your customer a fair deal and have done him a favor, and you have made a fair profit on the goods you have sold. Tor-On Shingle Stain is the perfection of a liquid shingle stain. This perfect Shingle Oil is the best solvent it is possible to make for the colors. The Paste Shingle Colors are the perfection of shades requisite to artistic house decoration. They are in just the same condition when they reach you as when they leave the factory, because they are sealed hermetically in air-tight cans, and can not spoil by the air or dust or by too long standing in the liquid, which is only intended to hold them for spreading. These Paste Shingle Colors are put up in cans of three sizes, a small can which contains the proper amount of color to tint one gallon of the Tor-On Shingle Oil, a large can to tint five gallons, and a still larger can to tint ten gallons of Shingle Oil. The trade-mark name of Tor-On, if spelled backward, gives a good definition of the reason for the name, and simply states the fact about Tor-On Shingle Stain which makes it so valuable an agent in the preservation of shingles. There is no rot about the shingles which have been treated with Tor-On Shingle Stain. You will double the life of your shingles by staining them with Tor-On Shingle Stain. It acts as a preservative from rot as well as being a most artistic finish in the making of beautiful homes. No paint stock is complete nowadays without a small stock of floor wax. Packed in i, 2, 4 and 8 lb. tins per lb. $0 75 DIRECTIONS For new floors, first fill the wood with paste wood filler, clean off surface with rough cloth or excelsior, and allow to stand until filler is thoroughly dry. Then put on a coat of polish with a rag or brush and allow to stand about half an hour. Then take a weighted brush with long handle and rub across the grain first and with the grain afterward. To obtain a high gloss, apply second coat in same way, and finish by placing a piece of dry, soft cloth or piece of carpet under the brush and go over floor again. 58 PITTSBURGH PLATE CLASS COMPANY BUTCHER’S BOSTON FLOOR WAX — cemoited Per lb. In such case you would refer to this table for the code word for the amount or quantity wanted. 62 PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS COMPANY THE USE OF BRUSHES (FROM THE WESTERN PAINTER, CHICAGO) Too much cannot be said in regard to the use and care of brushes. We have seen many persons who were good painters, but who did not seem to understand anything about taking care of their tools. Cold, dry winters are especially severe on brushes, which are usually kept in buildings that are heated by steam, furnaces or other dry heat. A brush should never be condemned because it contains a few loose hairs. A good and careful workman will get these out before he puts his brush into use. A little thoughtfulness on the part of foremen in shops will save a large amount of trouble, and many a brush that is hastily con- demned would prove a good one. Swelling a new brush is a very important item in the future usefulness of that tool. Under no circumstances should a new brush (paint or varnish, round or oval) be put in water to swell with the bristles down, for water-soaked bristles will always work flabby, and if the bristles are of a fine quality, they will nearly always twist. The handles are usually driven into round and oval brushes. As the wood and bristles both shrink when the brushes are kept in a warm, dry place, it is advisable to swell these brushes before using them. Be careful, though, to put your brushes in the water with the handle down, as shown in the accompanying illustration, letting the water come just to the point where the bristles emerge from the binding. This will swell the handle without soaking the elasticity out of the bristles and without making them flabby. Keep brushes in a cool or damp spot, and as near the floor as pos- sible. Exposures to heat will sometimes cause the wood to shrink and the best brush to shed bristles. Whitewash Brushes should never be put in hot or newly slacked lime, or lime with acids in it, as this burns the bristle and causes it to lose its vitality, and makes the ends break off. Dealers should acquaint their customers with these facts, and when complaints are made, inquire whether the above directions have been observed. A good sponge for the price; soft and elastic when wet I 25 SPONGE POINTS In this connection we desire to call attention generally of all who deal in and use sponges to two important points: 1. That as the sponge grows in water and is used wet, it should be offered for sale wet. Sponges when dry are hard, rough and easily torn; when wet, are soft and elastic and much less easily torn. The difference between fruit and fish, glue and gelatine in dried and soaked state applies to sponges. It can be therefore readily conceived that it is to the interest of the dealer to offer the sponges for sale wet. 2. Please note: The strongest sponge is easily torn by pulling across the grain. The fair test is with the grain. Everything has a grain. Wooden columns support buildings because with or along the grain, but wood across the grain can be easily broken. 182 PITTSBURGH PLATE CLASS COMPANY RUBBING FELTS — livre English Rubbing, X in. thick, fine grain, in sheets, 18x18 in per lb. $2 40 London Rubbing, %. in. “ coarse “ “ 18x18 in “ i 80 Ex. It is the only board with which the rule can be adjusted so as to cut eighths, quarters and halves of an inch, by merely turning a thumb nut at end of rule. The rule is held firmly at both ends, and when a number of lights are to be cut all the same size, every one will be alike. Our board should not be compared with the cheaper grade soft wood boards, ours being made of hard wood only and made to prevent warping. We have capable artists in our employ, and we can always furnish leaded glass work of the highest artistic excellence. We are ready at all times to submit special water-color sketches for art glass, when desired. We make a specialty of church work, and when designing church memorial windows we are always glad to introduce such inscriptions, de- signs, or emblems as may be suggested to us. Whenever it is desired to introduce figures and faces painted in fusible colors, we can insure the carrying out of the work in a manner as creditable to the purchaser as to the artist. We furnish sash for art glass at low prices. We make no charge for glazing art glass ordered from us; and when customers desire to send their own sash to us at our factory, we will make and insert the art glass without any charge for glazing. There is less risk of breakage when glass is shipped set in the sash. VENTILATORS We make our ventilating frames of galvanized iron, and can insert ventilators in ordinary frames or in irregular shapes. When writing for special designs or sketches for art glass, kindly give us the sizes and shapes of the openings, and also state about what price is to be paid for the glass. We make no charge for the special designs, but we expect them to be returned to us. Pittsburgh Platb Gx-abb Co.
