Flies complete, but without poles, half the price of tents of corresponding size. A NEW TRICK. A new device, to us, came to our notice a few days since. We learned that some of our competitors, among them a very large mail order house, were advertising' Covers and Paulins, and to make it appear that they were all right, the weight of each cover was appended, this seemed straight and above board, but on examination it was found that the weights given for a 10-oz. Paulin was only the weight of one of our 8-oz. Paulins, so that although the Paulin weighed what it was advertised, it was not as heavy duck as it was marked by 20 per cent. Merchants and customers who are not on to this kind of work, think sometimes when they get our prices that we are high, but on examination we are found to be right every time, unless there has been a mistake made, which is possible. We guarantee our goods to be as marked. STILL ANOTHER. A large and valued customer of ours wrote us a short time since, that he was offered covers “Weight guaranteed same exactly as yours,” for such and such a price, which was considera¬ ble below ours. We answered we would be much obliged, if he would procure some of those covers and weigh them, and advise us of the results. Later we received the following: “B & j L. Mfg. Co., Gentlemen:—Referring to yours of Nov. 12th, we ordered some of the Wagon Covers, as we advised you we would, to determine about weights, etc., and we find they fall ■ short in weight sufficiently, we think, to cover difference in price. While goods are branded ■ 10-oz., they are in reality only 8-oz., and we certainly do not approve of this or any other method of deception to secure business.” Yours truly. The above speaks for itself. We are glad to say that we know of some of our competi-; tors and customers who do as they advertise and we honor them. Moral: Deal with Those Who Go In For THE Square Deal. You Need a Wash, Take One. H These are they which have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the^K Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God.—Rev. 7:14-15. Blessed are they that wash their robes in the Lamb, that their right may be to the tree^B of life.—Rev. 24:14. (Douay Bible.) BAKER & LOCKWOOD MFC. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. 7 Tent Fly Used as a Sun Shade at a Picnic. BEWARE OP KLEPTOMANIACS. A Latin proverb says: “An evil gain is equal to a loss.” An English proverb says: “Honesty is the best policy.” And a Bible proverb says: “A poor man is better than a liar.”i These sayings have been proved to be true in connection with selling and buying of Light Weight and Small Size Tents, Covers, Paulins. etc. The manufacturer who started to make an evil gain by using 7-oz. duck and marking it 8-oz., and using 9-oz. for 10-oz. to get ahead of his competitor, and to cheat his customer, soon found that his competitor was on to his racket, and was using 6-oz. and marking it 8-oz. and 8-oz. for 10-oz. and 10-oz. for 12-oz. Then, to be still ahead of his opponent, he had to cut his covers so small that they would not cover, and his tents so small they made discontent among the users, against the manufacturer who made them, and the dealers who sold them. Some tents are made so small and low that the ohly way they can be used, if you want to stand up in them, is by putting boards around the walls to increase their height. The manufacturers are nearly all doing this, and they try farther to deceive the dealers and users by having two or three grades with a different discount for each grade, calling the best grade “Standard,” Full Weight,” etc. But it will be found on examination that nearly all of these so-called “Full Weight” and “Standard” goods are small and light. We are writing this for the information of our customers, not for our own benefit. At first this swindling did hinder our sales, but the public have found out where to get goods that they can depend on being what they are called, and things are coming our way in a manner that is very satisfactory to usw We append the weights of a few of the principal Wagon Covers and Tents. Have You Availed Yourself Of This? “Jesus said, ‘This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remis¬ sion of sins.’ ’’—Matthew 26:28. “Being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.—Romans 5:9. BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. Grading Scene. TO RAILROAD CONTRACTORS AND GRADERS. For a number of years we have been making a speciality of Stable. Commissary, Sleeping and Boarding Tents, for Railroad Contractors. As listed in the previous pages. We have thoroughly competent Cutters, Stitchers and Splicers who have large experienee in this kind of work. We put double side guys and turned and ironed stakes at every side pole. Buckles and straps at the doors. Heavy end guys and blocks and tackles for streching the ridge. Everything made to stand the wear, tear and wind. All first-class and up-to-date. Size and quality as ordered. THE SQUARE DEAL OR THE DEAL OUT. OF SQUARE WHICH? We received a letter of complaint from a railroad contractor—a good and valued customer —stating that we had charged him $74.00 for a small stable that he has just bought of us; also that he had bought one of the same size, weight and quality, which was 12-oz. Army with 10-oz. double filling duck walls, for $65.00. Our customer was about 200 miles away, but we sent a representative to see him, and he found that the other tent was made of 12-oz. double filling duck marked “Army” in the top, and 8-oz. single filling in the walls, and was worth, according to our figuring, about $61.00. Also our customer admitted that the workmanship in our tent was much the best. By the way, our customer had a wall tent that he had bought at the same time of our competitor for 12-oz. Army duck that was made of 12-oz. single filling Magnolia duck. If our price—quality, weight and workmanship considered—is not right, we will make it right. FLY WEIGHED MORE THAN THE TENT. A railroad contractor, customer of ours, called at our office and told us an interesting story, to the effect, that lately he had written to us for the price on a wall tent to be made of 10-oz. Army duck. After he had got our price, a merchant of the town persuaded him that money could be saved by buying from a competitor, which was done; but instead of costing less, they found, on account of extra freight, etc., it cost $2.00 more, and not only that, it was made of such poor and light goods that it would not turn water, so they ordered a fly from us and found that the 10-oz. fly actually weighed more than the tent. Stop being swindled. Go in for the square deal. Have You Heard The Good News? “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”—Luke 2:10-11. i BED BLANKETS. We make a specialty of Bed Blankets for Contractors at lowest market rates. We have generally on hand sec¬ ond hand blankets, slightly used at some Reunion or Camp meeting that we can sell at reduced prices. BUNKS. We make to order for Con¬ tractors, Portable Double Deck, Double Beds for use in tents, made to use either wire mattress¬ es or boards. We also have single wire or canvas cots. Also single or dou¬ ble mattresses or pads for con¬ tractors ‘use. Also make ticks to order for filling with hay, etc. Send for Prices. Please Excuse Me. Certainly, If You Wish. A certain man made a great supper and bade many: and sent his servants to say Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him—I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I pray thee have me excused. And another said,—I cannot come. Then th^ master of the house being angry said,—None of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.—Luke 14:16-24. i6 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MFC. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. Divided into two or four bed rooms on sides and dining- room in center. The awning principle in family tents is a great improvement for many reasons. It is not extra to the tent, but is simply a part of the wall lifted up to form an awning, instead of being drawn to one side. This gives free circulation of air through the' tent, besides afford¬ ing a beautiful shade. The walls of the bed rooms are ma.de of sheeting, and are the same height as the walls of the tent. They are attached by rings to cords stretched from the center poles to the side poles. If the top of tent were made of 12-ounce duck and the wall of 8-ounce duck, the cost would be the same as 10-ounce list. Size, Feet. Height, Wall, Feet, Height, Pole. Feet. 10-oz. Dbl. This is the old style Family Tent that we have given the above name to distinguish it. We believe this style of tent for Utilityt Comfort, Convenience and style is the best tent yet devised. To anyone who is willing to go to a little expense for fitting, it is capable of treatment that makes it a model of comfort and elegance. It can be fitted with floor, fly, doors, stove, etc., as shown in above cut, so that it would make a comfortable and healthy residence for a family all the year round. A 14 X 233^ tent, fitted as shown in cut, would be floored with 6-inch matched flooring on 2 x 4-inch joists; 12-inch board on edge all round, as shown in above cut. A 7 x 14 kitchen, with screen door, covered on the inside with roll-up curtain. Cook stove with pipe running through the roof, as shown. The cook stove would heat the whole tent in winter. There would be a 10 x 14 dining room across center of tent, and two 7 X 7 bed rooms at the other end. Then by having screen door at one or both ends of dining room, warmth, ventilation, comfort and freedom from flies or insects could be secured. FOUND HEALTH IN TENT LIFE. Camping Out in Summer an Octogenarian’s Cure for Rheumatism. From the New York World. Pittsfield, Mass.—In the summer of 1878 Charles Erdman Leidbold, then a restauranteur, was invited to join a camping party of Civil War veterans who had spread tents on the shore of Onota Lake, near Pittsfield. He remained with the party all summer, going daily to his business in the city and became enamored of the life under canvas. Next spring he bought a waterproof tent and put in up on his la,wn, and there he has slept every night from May to October. Now, at the age of 80, he is entirely free from the ills that age usually brings. “Just as soon as the grass becomes green, I hear the call for life out of doors,” says Leidbold. “It’s a part of my life, and I shall probably continue to camp out summers as long as I live. There is electricity and vigor from the earth. The confinement of sleeping indoors would be a hardship to me now. Years ago I contracted rheumatism during the winter months and I used dozens of bottles of liniment and all sorts of remedies. Just as soon as spring came round I pitclied my tent and in fourteen days every twinge of pain was gone and I haven’t had an attack since.” Mr. Leidbold’s tent is with in a few steps of his house. In it he has an ordinary bed, chairs and a lamp. The floor is the bare earth. He is up at five o’clock every morning, sometimes earlier, and works in his little garden, which provides him and his wife with all the vegetables they use the year around. He also grows pears and plums. On May 1 this year, Mr. Leidbold pitched his tent for the 28th annual camp. During that time he has had five tents, which have cost him on an average $28 each. He figures that in all he has paid out $150 for tents and fixtures. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. HIGH PRAISE FOR TENT LIFE AND DIETING IN THE CURE OF CONSUMPTION. THB OTTAWA TENT COLONY. A Few Remarks on the Work Done and Being Done in this Institution. By J. W. Pettit, M. D., Ottawa. Ill. The success thus far attained in the Ot¬ tawa Tent Colony for the treatment of tu¬ berculosis has placed the enterprise well beyond the experimental stage. Sufficient time has not yet elapsed to report any cures, but the results have been fully equal to those obtained in the same length of time in other sanatoria. No fact in medicine is better established than that climate per se is an unimportant factor in the treatment ol pulmonary tuberculosis It has been amply demonstrated that (^nsumption can be cured in any climate. The success of the Ottawa Tent Colony is only another object lesson which goes to prove the fu- tilitv of the claim that a change of climate is necessary for a cure in The Colony was opened July 1, with two patients. The number admitted dur¬ ing the first month was ten, the second month seventeen, third month ten, fittii month twelve, making the total number of admissions fifty-nine. Of this number twenty-four were advanced cases, many or whom were in an apparently hopeless con¬ dition. Several of these remained only a few days. Of the total number of ad¬ vanced cases (some of whom are still tak¬ ing treatment) six were improved and three are convalescent. The remainder of the cases have nearly all made substantial improvement. Only four cases in the in¬ cipient stage of the disease have been ad¬ mitted. These all made remarkable im¬ provement from the very beginning of the treatment. Evidences of Improvement. The following are some of the gains in weight, which may be accepted as one of the most marked evidences of improve¬ ment: One far advanced case, whose weight on admission was 84 pounds gained 30 pounds in 140 days. Another of the same class, whose weight on admission was 103 pounds, twenty-four pounds in eighty-five days. An incipient case, thirty-nine pounds in forty-four days. Another in¬ cipient case, thirteen pounds in twenty- one days. A second stage case, ten pounds In ten days. Another, sixteen pounds in twenty-eight days. It is nothing unusual for patients who are doing well to gain from four to six pounds a week during TITB early part of the treatment. Several pa¬ tients have gone beyond their normal weight from six to ten pounds. The aver¬ age gain for all patients has been two and one-fifth pounds per week. These resuits will compare favorably with those ob¬ tained elsewhere and certainly prove be¬ yond all doubt that the contention of the medical profession, that tuberculosis can be cured in Illinois, is correct. Essentials of the Treatment. The treatment is out-of-door life, a care¬ fully selected diet, regulation of exercise and medication for the improved nutrition. Each patient is expected to take three quarts of milk and six raw eggs a day in addition to the three regular meals. The results of tent life may be thus briefly summarized; The appetite increases; nu¬ trition improves; cough decreases; night sweats cease; sleep improves; weight in¬ creases; temperature falls; tendency to take cold diminishes; respiration improves, and the pulse rate is reduced. A rnarked improvement has been observed in all stages of the disease, but in early cases the results are most satisfactory. The patients for the most part are cheerful and contented with their surroundings. As a rule, they accept uncomplainingly the primitive life which the treatment im¬ poses. /Climate Not the Important Factor. “Consumption can be cured in Illinois. ♦ * * It is pure air and sunshine and not a particular climate which is the es¬ sential factor in the treatment of con¬ sumption, and it is further noted that the cures of consumption accomnlished in the home climate in which the patients remain are more lasting and more assured than when cures have been attained by tempo¬ rary residence elsewhere. * * ♦ More recoveries have been shown to have taken place in the Massachusetts State Hospital for Consumptives at Rutland, with its rig¬ orous winters, its moderate elevation (1,050 feet), its greater rainfall and prevalence of cloudy days, than at the United States Army Sanatorium at Fort Bayard, New Mexico, where all of the conditions of ele¬ vation (6,000 feet), mild climate, dry at¬ mosphere, moderate rainfall and almost constant sunshine are found, serving to in¬ dicate that some moisture in the air is per¬ haps not so injurious as was formerly sup¬ posed.”—Illinois State Board of Health, BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. 33 Extracts Eulogizing the Tent in the Treatment of Tubercuiosis. DR. H. M. THOMAS, OF CHICAGO, SOUNDS A WARNING AT OTTAWA, ILL. Oxygen reduces fever, aids digestion, gives refreshing sleep and heals the lungs. There is much fear of breathing night air. What other air is there to breathe at night but night air? Pure night air is healthful. Impure night air breeds disease. Breathe we must. There is but one choice, pure or impure night air. What are the sources of impure air? Mainly the home and workshop. Tuberculosis is a house disease; it depends upon the home for implantation, growth, maturity and propagation. The house is the granary of the bacilus. Houses of one kind and another are the ordinary means of spreading tuberculosis. The house is the most frequent means and the shop or office the next. This is so because it takes prolonged intimate contact with a person, place or thing that has been intensely contaminated with tuber¬ culosis matter to give rise to implantation. Probably three-fourths of all cases of tuber¬ culosis conveyed from person to person are contracted in the home and one-fourth due to shop or office environment. If we are to be saved from tuberculos's, we are to breathe pure air 24 hours out of ! 24.—Address delivered at Ottawa, Ill., Aug. 22d, 1904. OPEN AIR TREATMENT CURES NEBRASKA WOMAN OF CONSUMPTION. (Special Dispatch to the Enquirer.) Norfolk, Neb., Feb. 12.—Sleeping every night and living every day in the open air throughout the present winter, the severest Nebraska has ever known, Mrs. A. J. Salem, of this city, has been cured of consumption, and since October 1 has gained forty pounds in weight. Last summer physicians told Mrs. Salem that she had tuberculosis. She then weighed 118 pounds. She realized that her case required heroic treatment. She was a firm believer in the curative properties of fresh air, so she set up a little tent on the grounds surrounding her home, and ever since September has slept and lived in it. Within the last month the temperature has dropped to 35 degrees below zero, and most of the time it has been below zero, but despite the bitter cold Mrs. Salem has slept in her tent every night and spent most of her days there. She has had no fire. Simply putting on extra .wraps when she felt cold. Every night just before retiring she has bathed in ice cold water, and then rubbed herself down with a coarse towel. She says she does not now feel the severest cold when she is warmly clad. Her physicians say she is of danger. THE GREAT WHITE SCOURGE—ITS EXTENT AND COST. (Rockford Morning Star, April 2, 1905.) Eight million out of 75,000,000 people in the United States die of consumption. Tubercculosis is a communicable scourge, but is not a contagious one in the sense that smallpox is. Two women to every man die of the scourge in the United States. Dark rooms, overcrowded flats, no sunlight, indoor work amid unsanitary surround¬ ings, occupying a place where an unsanitary consumptive has lived, are the chief causes of the scourge. The danger in a consumptive relative or friend is made null by the burning of the sputum and the care of the patient on sanitary lines. The treatment for tuberculosis is simple. It consists of sitting for hours at a time in the open air and sunlight, well bundled up, and sleeping in open tents or in rooms where the windows are open; drinking plenty of milk and eating many eggs and much nourishing food; bathing daily. Any part of America, or anywhere else, can give these cardinal facilities of a “cure.’’ In middle Massachusetts there are many cures where the climate is of necessity bad. Thirty-eight per cent are cured by the fresh-air treatment here. In the Saranac Lake region of the Adirondacks, and in fact all through the Adiron- dacks, the percentage of cures is about forty. Arizona, New Mexico, Florida and North Carolina, and, in fact, all through the South and Southwest, the cure percentage is about forty per cent. This is the average all over America. “Tuberculosis can be successfully treated anywhere. Climate has practically noth¬ ing to do with the matter. Formerly climate was looked upon as the most imporfant factor in the production of tuberculosis, consequently it was also looked upon as the most important factor in the treatment. For many men it is difficult, even at the present time, to give up these ideas. It has been demonstrated, however, by practical tests that the disease can be successfully treated anywhere. * * ♦ is neces¬ sary is life in the open air, proper food, well regulated and carefully disciplined conduct, and, in more advanced cases, properly directed rest and exercise.” —FLICK. 34 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. To Evangelists and Preachers: For over thirty years we have made a specialty of the manufacture of Gospel Tents, and have learned by long experience what is needed in their construction, and we think we make Tabernacles that are not excelled anywhere and seldom equaled. In speaking with an evangelist from New York City last fall, who had used our tents for 25 years, he said: “In going about the country I am always interested in Gospel Tents, and never miss an opportunity to examine them when I see one, and I never find any other make that equals yours. There are points of excellence and a finish, fit and style about your tents that I have never found with other makes.” Unless otherwise ordered we rope all of our Gospel Tents from eave to ridge every third cloth around the eave and on the ridge. When they are over 50 feet wide, we put a canvas and rope band midway around the top. We would warn prospective buyers against the practice which is very general of substituting double filling and even single filling duck in place of army duck in the tops of tents. We lose many orders this way, because our patrons think the price is too high. We very seldom see or hear of a Gospel Tent, outside of our own make, with genuine army duck in the top. Single or double filling duck is good enough for the walls, but we always recommend army duck in the tops. It will be noticed that we do not even list single filling duck in our “Round“ and “Oblong Round End” Gospel Tents. Why? Because we know that they are unsatisfactory to the users. If you want a Tabernacle, let us figure with you. Good and Medium Second-Hand Gospel Tents for sale cheap, while they last. See pages in back of this catalogue. Containing 130 benches, showing their ease of transportation and portability, which, is an important item when seats have to be moved from place to place, as with Gospel Tents. To those who may need temporary accommodations for entertainments of any kind, we frequently find that people are ignorant of the fact that we rent tents seated to almost any capacity. For instance, two mcmths since we sent a tent 125x225, with 1,000 of these benches to seat 5,000 people, with a man to superintend the erection, etc., 270 miles into the country to be used for three days’ concerts for the Banda Rosa. We have also circus amphitheatre seats for sale or rent and tente large enough to seat 15,000 people under one tent, which could be sent to any part of the country. In our cutting rooms we cut up on an average five miles of cloth every working day in the year. We have our own carpenter shop where we make our tent poles, seats, camp furni¬ ture, etc., in which we use up between three and four hundred thousand feet of lumber annually, principally into tent poles. We also have our own blacksmith’s shop where we make bail rings, irons for masts, etc. We are incorporated for $200,000, fully paid up, so are able as well as willing to back up our promise to make good anything that is not according to contract. It is not practical to letter with white or light colored paints as it makes the burgee too heavy to fly well. Paint lettering, 20 cents per running foot. Stars sewed on both sides of border or heading, 15 per cent extra. Any practical design made. BAKER & LOCKWOOD MFC. CO, KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C J. BAKER & LOCKWOOD MFC. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. TO AWNING AGENTS AND USERS. We wish to call your attention to our facilities, capabilities and willingness to sup¬ ply first-class awnings at advantageous rates anywhere in the United States. We have 85 years’ experience. We have an up-to-date, commodious factory, second to none in the country, fitted with every labor saving device known to the trade. Operators and cutters with experience that cannot be obtained in small local shops. We have our own blacksmith shop w^here the frames are made cheaper than can be done in small quantities. Buying as we do in very large quantities, we are enabled to buy much cheaper than the small manufacturer. Lastly, we are not doing a “Get Rich Quick” business, but are satisfied with small profits, and willing to share the above benefits with our patrons. The store awnings shown in these pictures are made with wood front rods, which are inserted through a pocket along the front of the awning. This makes an Awning set square and look nice. But we also make them, if wanted, with iron front rods, and grommets in awning to tie to front rod, with tarred marline which we supply. We supply these front rods with couplings which obviate the necessity of bending them in shipping. Awnings to tie to iron front rods are easier to take off and put on in fall and spring than the wood rods in pockets. Examine our Prices, Dis¬ counts, Qualities and Styles, and it will generally be found that money can be saved and a better article obtained by buying of us. Reliable business men wanted as agents everywhere. The Word of God, Wheat. The Word of Man, Chaff. “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a ’dream; and he that hath My Word, let him speak My Word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Is not My Word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”— Jeremiah 23:28-29. Are "Your Sins Forgiven? If Not, Why Not? “And said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”—Luke 24:46, 47. ‘‘To Him give all the prophets witness, that through His Name whosoever believeth in Him shall receive remission of sins.”—Acts 10:43. 76 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MFC. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor lo C. J. BAKER. DIRECTIONS FOR MEASURING STORE AWNINGS, First determine the place where the joints of the frames will he fastened to' the building’, which should be from seven to eight feet from the sidewalk, according to the height of the front. (See figure 2 in diagram.) You will observe that the curtain, 15 inches deep, drops below that point, for which you will have to allow for clearing people’s heads. Then meas¬ ure from there to where the top of Awning can be fastened above the windows (see figure 1 in diagram), which will be the distance from 1 to 2, or height of awning; 2 to 3 in a high building should be the same as 1 to 2; but in a low one a little more. Then measure the width of the store from center of column on one side to the same on the other sidei, which will be the distance from 3 to- 4, or width of Awning. If the top of the windows where the Awning is to be attached projects beyond the face of the building, or is back of the face, mention how much. When ordering an awning state whether it is to be fastened in stone, brick, iron or wood, both as regards the top and bottom, and whether the door posts and face of building or outer columns are in line; also, whether the frame requires three or more or less joints and bars. The great advantage of this awning is for large and wide store fronts, as it can be made as long as 100 feet by having a number of supports to the roller. It rolls up close to the building, making a much neater appearance than in pull-up awnings. It can be made with ends, or wings, if desired, but looks much better without them. The awning can be lowered to any desired angle, and will remain there when set. The cut shows awning without ends, and while they can be made with ends, they work the best without them and look the neatest. Directions for Measuring for a Chain or Cog Gear Awning. First determine the place where joints of frame will fasten to 'the building, which should be from 7 to 8 feet from sidewalk, according to height of front. The curtain, 15 inches deep, drops below that point, for which you will have to allow, for the bottom of curtain should be at least 6 feet 3 inches from sidewalk. Then measure from where frame fastens, to the point where awning will fasten above. This gives the distance from 1 to 2. The distance over sidewalk, or from 2 to 3, must be the same as from 1 to 2, or if longer slide rods must be used. Then give extreme width that awning is to cover. This will be the length of top roller fixtures. But the awning and front rod is always nine inches shorter, on account of end journals and working gear of awning, which take up nine inches. State whether frame requires 4 or more joints and bars, also if in line and whether they fasten into iron, stone, brick or wood. State if top fastens to brick, iron, stone or wood, also if in line with upright columns. If back, how much. If projects, how much. State if end curtains are wanted. If only one, which ' side. (Standing and facing building.) State if ends are to be attached to awning as per (Fig. 1, showing ends) or separate as per (Fig. 2, see next page.) Notice —Always state definitely if measure from 3 to 4 is as per diagram, or if it is full length of roller. The outside measure of fixtures is 9 in. more than cloth measurement. If recover for Chain Roller Awning, give us the height, projection and exact width across of cloth. Designate distance from edge of cloth to center of re-inforced strip or strips where center support comes at the top, and if ends are wanted for chain or gear roller awning cover, specify if attached or detached. When ordering Cog Gear Awning state whether the box will be on the right or left end standing facing building. Good News for Sinners. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.—1 Tim. 1:15. “He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. ATTACHED ENDS FOR ROLLER AWNING. Giving' the arrangement of ropes and pulleys for i pulling ends of awning in before rolling up. Rope is fastened in back lower corner of end j and run through ring, sew^ed on under side of roof . at proper point. From there the rope runs up . through the pulley, which is under roller, and across through another pulley in same position at : end of roller, then down within easy reach. The i other end is arranged the same way except that the ;; loose end of the rope should be brought across and down with the first rope so one can operate ropes i and crank at the s?me time. Although this style of ends look better when 'I rolled up, we don’t recommeaid them, as they dp J not work so smooth, they drag on the roof and i cause more trouble than the No. . 2 style. DETACHED ENDS FOR ROLLER AWNING. -j We make these ends with return strip as shown j in cut. This excludes the light. Rope is fastened li to front pole and passes up inside through rings, and through pulley and down to cleat as shown in cut. When awning is rolled up an extra pull on this rope brings end cloth in close against the , building. We think this the simplest and best as it is i easier to work, does not drag on the roof of awn¬ ing and does not create a bulky and uneven place ; on the roller. Will make them either way. Spec- : ify which. GEAR OR CHAIN ROLLER AWNING. Showing all parts and how to attach for operat¬ ing when height is less than projection, and slide rods are used. Dotted lines illustrate awning partly out, and dark lines show it in position, demonstrating how it slides down or up automatic¬ ally as the awning is raised or lowered, allowing bars to be in horizontal position when in use. The back end of bars slide down and permit it to drop level at top when rolled up against the building. This style is especially adapted to low fronts or when prism glass is used above awning. When height and projection are the same slide rods are not used, but bars are attached to build¬ ing with stationary hinges. “He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: of how much sorer punishment suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith He was sanctified, an unholy thing, ancj. hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?’’—Hebrews 10:28-29, BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. 83 Successor to C. J. BAKER. Roller Awning 100 Ft. Long, Made to Roll Under Prismatic Transom. DIRECTIONS FOR PUTTING UP COG GEAR ROLLER, OR CHAIN ROLLER AWNINGS. Determine the place where awning is to fasten to building at extreme right and left ends at top. On the end at which operating box is to be placed, fasten the cog gear for top. On opposite end place end bracket. The bearings of these two parts must be on a perfect level. After these parts are securely fastened, draw a line from center to center of journal boxes across building; ascertain how many center supports are needed, measure awning to strips, divide the extreme width into as many parts as there are center supports. The center support consists of top and bottom part, the one with four rollers being bottom part, the one with one wide roller being the top part. Place the bottom in position, allowing space for roller between bottom and top part, which should be from six to eight inches in center according to size of awning, as a large awning takes up more room on roller than a small one. After bottom part is securely fastened, place the long roller in position and fasten securely at each end. Place top part of center support in position and the top part of awning is complete. The lower fastenings are the same as any ordinary awning. The operating box is generally fastened about three feet from the ground in a line with the top gear. Do not place operat¬ ing box in position until you have fitted the connecting rods into place, when you can put it exactly where it belongs. Where ends are sewed to the body of the awning (as in Fig. 1, which shows ends folded under) we furnish everything necessary for fastening. Where ends are separate (as in Fig. 2) the upper part of end is securely fastened directly under the roller and to the extension rod of frame. We sew rings on inside edge of end curtain and by placing a pulley at the ujjper inside corner and running a cord through the ring the ends can be folded up very neatly by simply pulling the rope tight. Attach fittings for lower part of frame all in line. Box and crank go on same end as sprocket or gear above. Tack cloth on roller allowing for cloth to roll over, not under. Be sure and get cloth to come straight, as it will roll up uneven otherwise. Have reinforced strip come right for center support. P^oll cloth up on roller. ' Pass chain through box and over sprocket. Bore holes in front pole where bars will come at columns. Put pole in front pocket. Put end bars through pole with washer on each side. Push awning out and attach back end of bars. Then put center bars in same way. Screw all burrs tightly and arrange end with rope, as shown in either cut 1 or 2 (seen on preceding page), according to style of end ordered. If there are no center columns to attach the bars to, brace arms can be used on any medium sized front. These fasten to side and branch out diagonally supporting front pole. If Window Awnings, frame and all are wanted, answer the following questions: How many? What kind of cloth? If on the first floor or above? Distance from 1 to 2? From 3 to 4? And if circular or segment top, from 4 to 5? What material do we fasten to, and are all points in line? For Recovers—Window or Door Awnings. If you have the frame and wish Recover, state what kind of cloth; Shape of top of Awn¬ ing; Shape of front of Awning; Height of Awning; Extension of Awning; Width of Awning. In taking height of recover, do not include the scalloped curtain, but measure from where frame fastens, only. The way to get the exact height and extension of Circle or Segment Awning Covers, is to draw a string across from lower fixture on one side to the same point on the opposite side; then measure from the center of the string straight up to the highest point of Circle, for the height, and straight out to the farthest point of circle, for the extension. This gives the distance, including the diameter. In ordering Porch or Door Awnings, specify what space must be left below, so as not to interfere with persons going in or out. If screens are used on doors, awnings should be a little wider. Instructions for Putting Up Window Awnings. Put cloth on frame. Tie one end of each of the two ropes to front of iron frame in from the corner about 6 to 12 inches according to width of awning. This can be done by cutting two or three stitches in pocket to let rope in (the rest will not rip, as it is lock-stitch). Next put glass pulley underneath where awning will fasten at top, in from right hand corner (look¬ ing out of window); the iron pulley same point on other side; both to be in far enough from corner to be in line with where you have fastened rope to front of frame. Put one rope through iron pulley and both through glass, so tltey will pull down together as shown on drop curtain, cut 5. Pull Awning up. Attach top with screw eyes. Let down in position and fasten back ends. Do not stretch cloth too tight as allowance must be made for shrinkage. If height and base are the same, hinges will be sent for back attachments; if not the same, slide rods will be sent. In that case, upper end of rods should reach up to grommet in lower back corner of cloth. 91 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. Porch and Window Awning. Successor to C. J. BAKER. 93 PORCH AWNINGS. The advantage of Porch Awnings over Drop Curtains is that they shade the porch without obstructing the view or hindering the ventilation. A porch unshaded on a hot day while the sun is on it, is a very uncomfortable place to be, unless protected by an Awning, but when so protected, is the healthiest and pleasantest place to be found around the house, as you get all the benefits of the sunshine without the oppressive heat, and you also have the unobstructed view. Porch Awnings are deservedly becoming more popular every year. Are You Under the Curse, Or Not? “For as many as are of the works of the law, are under the curse; for it is written, cursed is every one that continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law to do them.” • ' Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”—Gal. 3:10-13. A Good Time Now and a Good Time Coming. “Only goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”—Psalm 23:6, R. Which? “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”—John 3:16. “Andwhosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.”—• Rev. 20:15. 94 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. BAKER. DROP CURTAINS. For Verandas, Porches, Division of Rooms, etc. The utility and comfort of Drop Curtains has as yet, we believe, been only partly understood and appreciated. Their utility as sun shades have been more or less acknowledged, but that is only a small part of their usefulness. It may not be generally known that the latest and most approved method of treat¬ ing tuberculosis and other pulmonary diseases is by sleeping in tents or by having verandas or porches enclosed by curtains. It has been demonstrated that persons so affected do not need change of climate so much, as to make the best of the climate that they have at home. Sanitariums are now l3uilt in the east and elsewhere with large porches, where the patients can get plenty of sun in the day and the porches are enclosed by curtains at night for the patients to sleep, and wonderful results are ob¬ tained by these methods in the dreaded disease of tuberculosis, so it follows that anyone with a good porch or veranda can make an excellent sanitarium cf their own at small cost by enclosing them with Drop Curtains, which can be specially constructed to raise in the daytime to admit the sun, and lowered at night, and fastened to the posts to exclude draft for sleeping rooms. Two or more bedrooms could be made in this way on an ordinary porch. Drop Curtains are excellent, too, for dividing rooms, where it is not advisable or practical to have permanent partitions, such as large bedrooms, Sunday or other school rooms, where it is advisable to have the classes isolated for awhile and then thrown together again. This can be done neatly and quickly with Drop Curtains and they roll so snugly that they do not disfigure the room when rolled up. Made with eyelets along the top to attach with screw-eyes, pole in hem at bot¬ tom. Cords are attached at top at suitable distance from the ends, and pass down the outside of curtain, underneath the pole, then up the inside of the curtain to and through pulleys, then both cords lead to one end. By pulling on the two cords the curtain will roll snugly to the top. Price, 8c per sq. ft. Price includes rope, screw-eyes, cleat and pole; ready for use. See discount sheet. A porch has a roof, as show^n above, but a balcony is a stage or platform extending from a building, or it may be the second story of a porch. A balcony has no roof to it, as shown above, so a Balcony Awning is put on the building above the balcony to shade it from the sun and to pro¬ tect It from the rain. What we say in regard to the home-grown sanitarium on the next page, can be utilized by anyone who has a balcony, by simply putting up an awning and have it supplied with detachable curtains, A gentleman customer of ours has such a balcony awning enclosed as above, in which he has been cured and proposes to continue to sleep there from henceforth. Add health, comfort and beauty to your home by protecting your windows, doors and porches with awnings. Are You Resting or Not? “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”—Mat¬ thew 11:28. “We which have believed do enter into rest.”—Heb. 4:3. “But the wicked are like the troubled sea. When it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace saith my God, to the wicked.”—Isaiah 57:20-21. What the Bible Says of Itself. “The prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”—2 Peter 1:21. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”—2 Timothy 3:16-17. 96 BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. These Modern Flats or Apartment Houses are a product of the latter part of the 19th century, and the first part of the 20th, and are designed to furnish the most luxu¬ rious home, fitted with every convenience and luxury by the landlord, thus making life as easy and comfortable as it can possibly be made for the tenant. A strictly modern flat is furnished with awnings for the doors, windows and porches, which are supplied by the landlord. Landlords or agents who provide them should write us for samples of stripes and prices, as we make special rates for large jobs, as well as having a larger and more attractive line of stripes than are usually found with local awning makers. You May Reject It, Once Too Often. The Lord God of their fathers sent to them by His messengers, rising up betimes and sending; because He had compassion on His people, but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised His words, and misused His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy.”—Chronicles 36:15-16. Man’s Righteousness Filthy Rags. “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities like the wind have taken us away.”—Isaiah 64:6. ‘‘For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commandeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us.—Romans 5:6-8. BAKER & LOCKWOOD MEG. CO., KANSAS CITY, U. S. A. Successor to C. J. Offices and rooms fitted in elegant style, steam heat, electric and gas lights, water, elevator and janitor service, and last, but not least, the windows fitted with awnings to make them cool and comfortable during the hot days of summer. The above picture shows one of our jobs, exhibiting the style, fit, uniformity and neatness of our work. Special prices are made to agents and landlords who want a number of awnings. The rich man said, “I will say to my soul, Soul, thou has much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry.” But God said unto him, ‘‘Thou fool! If you were offered One Hundred Thousand Dollars Cash, with the alternative that if you did not accept it, you would be sent to the Penitentiary for Life, how long would it take you to decide in favor of the cash? You say there is no such fool in the world that would not take the cash instead of the prison. And yet here you are and you have incurred an infinitely greater Penalty than penitentiary for life, and yet God in mercy and grace not only offers you a full and free pardon from the penitentiary, but if you accept His grace will give you an immeasurably greater Prize than one hundred thousand dollars. It is offered free as the air you breathe, and you must accept the Prize or incur the Penalty. There is no alternative, and yet you are going along indifferent from year to year as if there was no Penalty to be avoided, and no Prize to be gained. Ordinarily you would pass the above list of texts as if they were of no concern to you whatever, and yet your weal or woe for eternity is bound up in the truth they contain.
