W. CANTON, OHIO Plant and Office of THE ELLER MANUFACTURING CO., Canton. Ohio We take pleasure in presenting this catalogue to our customers, in which, in a general way, is briefly described and illustrated the goods we manufac- ture. In addition to those described herein any specialties can be fur- nished. Our plant is one of the largest and most complete of its kind in the United States. Our prod- ucts are made from Open Hearth Steel Sheets. Our specialty is Toncan Metal , both black and galvanized. If users knew their superior and lasting qualities they would not pur- chase those made from steel sheets. We hope you will find this catalogue useful. THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. OPEN HEARTH STEEL SHEETS Today, as we use products made from Open Hearth Steel Sheets, it is difficult to realize that without this material these products would not be a possibility. At least, some of them would not be obtainable at the pre- vailing low prices. Open Hearth Steel Sheets were the first commercial steel sheets available at a low cost that could be formed, seamed or bent without dan- ger of breaking. It is true that other sheet metals preceded Open Hearth Steel Sheets, but they were either prohibitive in price or they possessed poor working qualities. Open Hearth Steel Sheets are very ductile and are therefore adapted for the most severe forming without danger of breaking. And where strength is needed Open Hearth Steel Sheets fulfill the requirements better than sheets made by any other process. They pos- sess high tensile strength. Deep drawing and stamping requires a sheet metal that will not tear. Open Hearth Steel Sheets have been found excellently suited for this pur- pose and are used very extensively. Many thousand tons of polished and blued Open Hearth Steel Sheets are used annually for stoves and ranges. In fact, the uses for Open Hearth Steel Sheets are innumerable and greatly varied. Open Hearth Steel Sheets created new products, new uses and new industries. Products that heretofore had been made of wood, cast iron, copper, zinc, lead or other high-priced materials were found possible to make from Open Hearth Steel Sheets at an enormous saving. New industries for making these products sprouted up over night. New machinery was needed and more men employed. The consumer, the sheet metal worker, seller and manufacturer were all benefited by the advent of Open Hearth Steel Sheets. Eller Products have always been made from Open Hearth Steel Sheets. And it is a fact that the excellent quality and superior working prop- erties of Open Hearth Steel Sheets have contributed lai’gely to the suc- cess and popularity of Eller Products. Every year sees thousands of tons of Open Heai'th Steel Sheets formed up into Eller Products and shipped to all parts of the globe — mute testi- mony of the discriminating buyers choice of well-made products fabricated from high quality material. 4 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. TONCAN METAL SHEETS AND PRODUCTS Years ago when the first moderate-priced commercial sheet metal was brought forth, the atmosphere was purer than it is today, consequently sheet metal exposed to the atmosphere gave long service. Gradually as our manufacturing industries grew in number as well as in size the air, especially in large manufacturing centers, became tilled with smoke, fumes, gases, cinders and soot. And sheet metal on buildings and other places rusted out quickly. So more durable sheet metal was demanded by all users. But the demand was for sheet metal which would be moderate in cost and easy to bend, form and seam. Finally Toncan Metal Sheets were evolved. And Toucan Metal has been found to fulfill all the requirements of present-day usage under the most severe corrosive influences. Toncan Metal is rust-resisting and anti-corrosive. There is no purer, more durable or more honest sheet metal made from iron ore than Toncan Metal. And the cost is moderate. Toncan Metal is rust-resisting because it is pure — as pure as it is possible to make sheet metal from iron ore — and because its structure is uniform and dense. Scientific, slow and careful processes of manufacture are used in making Toncan Metal. These special processes make the cost of Toncan Metal slightly higher than Steel Sheets. Yet when its extreme durability is considered the cost is very low. Besides, Toncan Metal bends, seams and forms up better than any other sheet metal made from iron ore. It has been several years since Toncan Metal was first placed on the market and by this time it has conclusively proven its ability to with- stand the most severe corrosive influences to a degree that had hitherto been considered impossible in an iron ore product. By using Toncan Metal Sheets in the manufacture of Eller products we are able to offer our trade the most durable and most economical sheet metal products it is physically possible to produce. The real progressive dealer realizes the opportunities presented by Toncan Metal Sheets and Formed Products, because he sees that by pay- ing a little more for his sheet metal he can offer to his trade a better value for the money, and naturally it brings him in better results in profit and prestige. THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. TERMS NET CASH IN THIRTY DAYS Two per cent cash discount will be allowed on net amount of invoice after subtracting freight allowance, if any, provided settlement in full is forwarded within ten days from date of shipment. WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS All Sheet Copper and Copper Products, thirty days net, one-half of one per cent discount for payment in ten days. All special order work, such as Cornice, Ventilators, special Stamping, etc., carries special terms, to be arranged at time of placing order, regard- less of credit standing or rating, and such orders are positively not subject to cancellation after work has started on them. Customers ordering for the first time must forward satisfactory references if not rated by the Commercial Agencies ; otherwise, we reserve the right to ship goods to our order, draft with bill of lading attached (C. 0. D.). In such event we require an advance payment of 25 per cent to insure acceptance of the shipment. A discount of 2 per cent is allowed on the net amount of such shipment if draft and bill of lading are taken up at the bank within ten days from date of shipment. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE delivery of any shipment we make within a specified time, traffic delays are unavoidable — hence your material requirements should be made known to us in plenty of time to offset delays on the part of the carriers. Failure of a shipment to arrive within ten days from date of invoice does not extend the discount period. All orders, regardless of terms, are taken subject to unavoidable delays, strikes or other causes beyond our control, and are, therefore, not subject to cancellation without our consent. Claims for damages must be made by the purchaser, but we will gladly render all assistance possible. No claims for defects or shortages will be considered or allowed unless made immediately upon receipt of goods and before any of the material has been used or disposed of. The purchaser should be extremely careful to check the shipment with the bill of lading which we always mail with invoice, and also check each item with the material enumerated on invoice. This is necessary to protect the buyer as well as ourselves. THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. We will make the rolls any desired length to suit customers when specified in the order. NOTICE the fact we allow 1 0 / 2 square feet for forming the seams in a square of our roofing. Some manufacturers, in order to make a low price, do not allow anything for seams, but charge for the full width and length of roll, and thus deceive the buyer. Made in Open Hearth Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Toncan Metal p THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. 10 OUR LOCK-SEAM ROOFING IN PROCESS OF LAYING THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, Q. OUR IMPROVED LOCK-SEAM PLAN The construction of this roof is such as to warrant it wind-proof and water tight. The seams are double folded, making a continuous cap and sheet combination which conforms to all inequalities in the sheeting, with ample provisions for the expansion and contraction of the metal. Double- locked cross seams are guaranteed not to become loose or come apart in handling. Put up in rolls 50 feet in length, 26 V 2 inches in width. OUR FLEXIBLE DOUBLE CROSS-LOCK A Cross-Seam that will Never Come Apart or Leak Our manner of double locking the cross seams of our Roofing makes it the most desirable Steel Roofing in use. Cross-seams constructed in this manner are guaranteed not to leak or come apart. The leaking of cross-seams of Metal Roofing on flat roofs is entirely overcome by the use of our Double Cross-lock ; therefore our Roofing can be used with safety on a flatter surface than any other Metal Roof made. The Following Cuts Show the Construction of our Flat Cross-Seam Double Lock C FIG. A Shows a steel sheet with the first hook turned. FIG. C Shows a sheet with the double hook turned complete. FIG. B Shows the sheets connected and the lock OUR CLEATS Are all formed at our shops, ready for nailing to the roof boards, and do not have to be bent over the edge of Roofing with the fingers, as is the case with other roofs. B Made in Open Hearth Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Toncan Metal 11 The Eller Manufacturing Co. THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O 12 OUR ANCHOR CAP ROOFING IN PROCESS OF LAYING THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. OUR ANCHOR CAP METAL ROOFING This Roofing we make of the same quality of Metal as our Lock-Seam Roofing. It is a little cheaper, as it costs less to manufacture it. Its con- struction is the best and makes it the most securely folded Metal Roofing in use. It is virtually a wind-proof roofing. The Cleats, being set on the wide up-turned edge of Roofing, secures it firmly to the sheathing or lath, so that in seaming it will not be raised from the sheathing by the seamers, but remain firm and solid on the roof boards or lath, thus preventing that vibration so common in most all other Metal Roofing. It can be laid either on lath three to six inches apart, or on sheathing or over old shingles. It is more easily put on over old shingles than any other Metal Roofing that has ever been produced. Easily attached to any kind of valleys or gutters. It forms its own comb and hip seams, and will be found complete in all respects. A OUR FLEXIBLE DOUBLE CROSS-LOCKS The following cuts show the construction of our flat cross-seam Double Lock, which is the same as that used in our Lock-Seam Roofing. FIG. A Shows a sheet with the first hook turned. FIG. C Shows a sheet with the double hook turned complete. FIG. B Shows the sheets connected and the lock complete. The Anchor Cap Cleats are all formed at our works, ready to nail to the roof boards, and it does not require an expert to put this roofing on. The tools are special and work perfectly, and with our printed instructions, one could hardly make a mistake in applying it. Made in Open Hearth Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Toncan Metal 13 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. 14 OUR PRESSED STANDING SEAM ROOFING IN PROCESS OF LAYING THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. PRESSED STANDING SEAM ROOFING This roofing we carry in stock for prompt shipment in 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-foot sheets. A square consists of five sheets 10 feet long, with a covering width of 24 inches, or their equivalent in other lengths. This roofing is very desirable for steep roofs as there are no edges to be turned, and as it is put on one sheet at a time, it is much easier managed on a steep roof than a continuous strip roofing, which reaches from comb to eave. With our printed instructions, and our special tools for applying this roofing, almost any one can put it on properly. Its superior architectural appear- ance, as well as its durability, cheapness and effectiveness, has secured its general adoption by many manufacturers, railroad companies and build- ers, and is being generally adopted by all who give its merits any compari- son with other materials. It is the strongest known form of Sheet Iron, and imparts material strength to the structure to which it is attached. 17 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. ELLER S NON-SYPHONING CORRUGATED ROOFING IT HAS NO EQUAL We are the originators of Eller’s Non-Syphoning “KANT-LEAK” Roofing, and our ideas are covered by patent, issued September 24, 1912. Other manufacturers, realizing the merits of this roofing, have copied it. Copying of our ideas by other manufacturers is in itself conclusive evidence that this roofing is all we claim for it. This proof should be sufficient evidence for the dealer so that he should have no hesitancy what- ever in recommending same to his trade. The principle is so clearly set forth in our sectional drawing that it is unnecessary for us to devote any further time in explaining this product. The extreme width of sheet, 26 inches. Covering width, 24 inches. Fur- nished in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12-foot lengths. Made in Open Hearth Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Toncan Metal 18 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. NON-SYTHONING DEMONSTRATING BOX The above Demonstrating Box we will be pleased to furnish to any dealers who may be interested. The box is composed of two small sections of Non-Syphoning Roofing, placed together the same as they would be on a roof. The sides of the box are soldered fast to the outside edges of the roofing. The corrugated lap is identically the same as it would be when applied to the roof. This box can be filled with water, and there will be no syphoning whatever, as our air space will entirely offset the capillary attraction. Any seepage that may occur from a driving rain, or from the corrugations being banked with snow, is carried away by the small gutter, which forms the Non-Syphoning feature. The capacity of said gutter is much greater than is necessary to carry all the water that may be driven over or through the corrugation. You can guarantee this roofing to your customer without any hesi- tancy whatever. We give exclusive territory and protection to one dealer in each vicinity who is willing to stock this roofing. All those who have used it are satisfied customers, and every one a booster. LENGTHS AND GAUGES All our Sheets are made to the United States Standard Gauges as adopted by Congress, March 3, 1893. We keep in stock sheets 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 feet long, of standard gauge, for prompt shipment. When heavier gauges are wanted, more time is required to fill the order. Galvanized Standard Gauge sheets are always kept in stock for prompt shipment. We also furnish heavier gauges on receipt of specifications. For tall buildings, such as grain elevators, we recommend sheets three to four feet long, as being the most convenient to handle, and making the best siding for that purpose. HOW TO ORDER Much care should be taken in making out orders. It always delays shipments when orders are sent in that are not plain or complete, as it compels us to hold them until we can write and find out just what is wanted and how it is wanted. Estimate how many sheets you need to cover the surface and what lengths will suit best and make the least cutting. Be sure to allow for end laps. If for roofing, allow 3 to 6 inches ; if for siding, one inch is enough. The covering width of everything we make is two feet, except where other- wise stated. Be sure to name everything in your order that you want, and how you want it. When corrugated sheets are used for roofing not less than two corru- gations should be used for side laps. There is always danger of leaks in the side laps where only one corrugation is used. We do not advise its use on a flat roof, but recommend our Standing Seam Steel Roofing, which will always be found satisfactory for that pur- pose. 21 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. Made in Open Hearth Galvanized Steel or Galvanized Toncan Metal THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O CORRUGATED SHEETS FOR ROOFING AND SIDING Toncan or Open Hearth Steel — Galvanized or Painted Corrugated is one of the strongest known forms of Sheet Metal, and imparts ma- terial strength by its lineal rigidity to the structure to which it is attached. Its legitimate use is for Siding. It is the best material known for use on struc- tures of moderate cost that are intended to be fire-proof. The rigidity imparted to comparatively light sheets by corrugating makes them self-supporting, thereby permitting their use on light, inexpensive framing, the result being a substantial building with a handsome appearance. BEADED IRON SIDING AND CEILING No. 377 No Charge for Side Laps Sheets, when beaded, cover 24 inches from center to center of outside beads, and are furnished in 8-foot lengths. For a cheap and desirable fire- proof siding and ceiling, we have nothing that we could recommend more highly. As a siding it is much easier to fit around windows and doors than corrugated or other forms of iron siding. Anyone can apply it; the only tools required are a pair of hand shears and a pointed hammer. As a ceiling it can be applied directly on the floor joists, on boarding, or put on over old plastering, making a light fireproof ceiling at a comparatively small cost. It makes a good ceiling and can be painted any desired color atter applied. No trouble to apply it. Give the sheets 1 to 2 inches lap at the ends, and lap one bead on the side. Nail side laps every 6 to 8 inches, and end laps close to every bead. WEATHER BOARD SIDING JR t , 'jr iS. 1 1 ■" No. 376 No Charge for Side Laps Sheets eight feet long and cover two feet wide. ROCK-FACED BRICK SIDING No. 353 Shows Rock-Faeed Steel Brick Siding Ready for Application A square consists of 8 4-7 sheets, 60 inches long by 28 inches wide. Directions For Putting On STEEL BRICK SIDING OVER WOOD SHEATHING 1st. Get the level of your building entirely around its base or top and strike a line corresponding thereto. 2nd. Place a full sheet of siding at one corner of the building, al- lowing the end to extend two or more feet past the corner, so that the cross-grooves are immediately over the corner; the lower edge of the sheet resting on the chalk line. 3rd. Nail the sheet fast to the wall throug'h the grooves suffi- ciently to hold it fast and bring it down solid all the way along. Be- gin at the middle of the sheet to nail and work toward ends and sides, putting nails two or three bricks apart. Never nail through the brick. 4th. Bend the projecting two feet around the corner with the hands or with a piece of board, using a mallet lightly to bring down ^ any uneven places. o 5th. Lay around the building until you meet the commencement. Place the first sheet of the second tier over the first so as to break joints perfectly, as in brick work, letting the half groove at the ^ bottom of the sheet lap over the first and fit closely in the half groove at the top of the first sheet. 6th. Window and door frames should not be put in until after the siding is on. But in case the frames are in, the Steel Siding may be applied and faced at doors and windows the same as for wood siding. 7th. At windows or doors cut the sheets about three inches above the bottom sill, and the same distance from the side; then cut from the corner thus formed obliquely to the corner of the window or door space, bend the steel with the hands down upon the window sill and around the side of the studding, and nail it fast. The window frames fit in over these laps and show a complete brick finish. Use a %-inch wire barbed nail and drive through the grooves without the use of a punch, but always use a nail-set to drive nail home. Cost of nails for applying siding. 5 cents per square, and will be shipped with sid- ing when so specifieu in the order. WHY METAL SHINGLES ARE USED SO EXTENSIVELY Disastrous fires have occurred in some of the larger cities, the spread- ing of which was due entirely to the combustible material that was used for roofing purposes. Investigations carried on by the Board of Underwriters, showing the actual reasons why the fires were so disastrous, have awakened our civic authorities to the realization that within the fire limit district a ban must be placed on wood shingles, and other inflammable material, which here- tofore has been used so extensively for roofing purposes. We find that such cities as Chelsea, Mass.; Bangor, Me.; Birming- ham, Ala. ; Atlanta, Ga., and in fact, we could go on naming city after city, where they have placed restrictions on roofing material in order to safe- guard against the possibility of fire spreading from one building to an- other by roof communication. Metal Shingles have been accepted by the Board of Underwriters as an excellent protection against fire, and can be used within the fire limits of any city without question. THE CROWNING FEATURES WE CLAIM FOR OUR SHINGLES First. The cost is much less than slate or tile. Second. The roof construction does not require to be so rigid on ac- count of the small amount of weight, when compared with other roofing material. Third. When properly laid, the wind has no effect on it whatever. Fourth. The wearing qualities are unsurpassed. Final. From an ornamental standpoint, they make an extremely handsome and attractive roof in appearance. 43 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. Canton, ohio ELLER’S FEDERAL IMPROVED CEMENT Its greatest advantage lies in its wonderful elasticity. It does not dry by evaporation, but by a chemical setting, consequently it does not shrink and allow the patches to loosen up and fall out. It will not get hard and brittle under the most extreme cold. Neither will it soften and run under the most intense heat of the sun. It can be applied in any kind of weather, either sunshine, rain or snow, and on all surfaces and in any position, even on the under side of a horizontal surface. It is Roof Insurance par excellence and the price makes it a necessity. It is always ready for use. There is nothing to mix or stii' — nothing to heat up or melt — no muslin or canvas patches to bother with — just our roofing cement, two hands and a trowel. Put up in barrels, V 2 barrels, kegs, 100, 50 and 25-lb. Prices Quoted on Application 55 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. As the “Self-Lock” Hanger grips the bead and completely surrounds the trough, with the crossbar locked in place under a strong tension, it cannot work loose, but adds great rigidity — consequently more strength to the trough. 68 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. THE “KONICAL” VENTILATOR MADE OF GALVANIZED STEEL WITH GLASS ANI) METAL TOPS In calling the attention of the public to the Konical Ventilator our idea is to illustrate not only the Ventilator itself, but its practical working and design. It has a stationary cap which is acted upon by the natural currents of the air, which, with the internal and external construction of the Ventilator, produces a vacuum which simultaneously induces an up- ward draught, carrying with it all gaseous substances, smoke, etc., con- tained in the chimney, pipe, building, etc., to which the Ventilator is attached. The “Konical” Ventilator is storm-proof, and has the greatest ca- pacity of any ventilator made. To obtain the best results, it is necessary that the Ventilator have as large a capacity as the flue or opening upon which it is placed ; for instance, for a flue 10x14 inches, inside, nothing less than a 12-inch Ventilator should be used. It is a well-known fact that the question of ventilation for school houses and church buildings, as w T ell as all other classes of buildings, has already become a very important one among architects and builders. The “Konical” Ventilator or Chimney Top is the most popular and desirable of any in use, owing to its superior construction, effectiveness and ornamental appearance. GLASS TOP “KONICAL” VENTILATORS Bases will be made to fit any roof or chimney, either square or oblong, of any size required ; but the prices of the bases are extra, according to size and quantity. GALVANIZED STEEL SKYLIGHTS Made complete with 14-inch rough ribbed or wired glass, which we pack and ship in separate cases. These Skylights are so constructed as to insure them not to drip, either from condensation or rain, even without the use of putty, but to make them doubly secure, we recommend that all glass be puttied. We do not furnish the wood curbs. In making these Skylights all joints are lugged and soldered, so that in case of fire, solder can melt away, but the Skylight will remain intact. This is a very important feature which you will not find in other makes. Our construction of skylights is acknowledged to be the best in the country today. GALVANIZED CORNICE On the following pages we show various designs of Cornices for which we have patterns and are in position to furnish promptly. You will notice that we have not quoted any price on these as we have found by actual experience that it is far more satisfactory, both to our customers and our- selves, to quote a net delivered price on your requirements. If you will select from the catalog the style you are particularly in- terested in, give us the extreme length, including end trusses — if lettering is wanted, print the letters required — state whether pediment, end trusses or mitres are required, and on receipt of this information we will quote you a price by return mail. As every Cornice must be made up after measurements are received, which requires time, as we do not carry any of these patterns made up, it is important that orders be placed early so that they may be delivered by the time the goods are needed. In addition to the patterns shown on the following pages, we are in position to quote on any special Cornice, and if you will send us blue prints and specification, we will be glad, indeed, to figure over the work and quote you attractive prices. We will postively not be responsible for any errors made in measuring, nor will any change be made after work is started, except at the expense of parties ordering. Orders are not subject to cancellation without our consent, for you understand that after this work has been started, to make any change would entail additional expense, or to cancel the order would mean that same would be a dead loss on our hands. All Trusses are made with 12 inch face, unless otherwise ordered. Cornices are all special, and the importance of having correct measure- ments before the work is started, is plain to everyone. We do not guarantee safe delivery, nor delivery within any specified time. Our responsibility ceases when we obtain receipt of Transportation Company here for shipments in good order, after which material is the property of the party ordering, who must look to Transportation Company for any loss, delay or damage of whatever nature; although we will be glad to have our Traffic Department file claims for your account and will do everything possible to have early settlement effected. We do not return plans sent to us to work by until after material has been accepted and paid for. We can construct Cornices from Galvanized Open Hearth Steel, Gal- vanized Toucan Metal or Copper, and in writing us be sure to specify what is wanted. 96 THE ELLER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CANTON, O. pw GALVANIZED CORNICE 1 J.
