We beg leave to call your attention to our Machine Turned Batnaters, We are the owners of the U. S. Patents for the only Baluster Machine making a shav- ing cut, with the same tool used by the hand turner, but controlled by an Iron Hand, which cannot vary from the pattern set. The Balusters are finished equal to those turned by hand, but are superior in being uniform in Shape and Slz©, obviating loss of time to the stair builder in fitting the necks in the rail. The shavings from ovCr machines, owing to the perfect cutting action of the tools, are from five to ten feet long, leaving the grain of the wood with no tendency to raise on oiling, which is the case where the grain is in the slightest degree compressed . Our Machines are now fitted to turn the regular styles of l M, 1 %, 2, 2\i, and 2\i inches diameter, and New Styles will be constantly produced- Our regular stock Balusters are turned 2 feet 8 inches and 2 feet Jj. inches long, called “Long” and “Short,” Odd lengths to order at a small additional cost. HAND TURNED BALUSTERS. * d" THE STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. We are now prepared to furnish our Machine Turned Balusters with Tait’s Patent Dovetail (see Fig. 1) without extra charge, when so ordered. We will also dovetail any pattern of hand turned balusters, that may be ordered from us, at an additional charge of 50 cents per hundred. The advantages of this mode of dovetailing are : 1st. The dovetails being cut by special machinery, are uni- form in size and angle, ensuring a perfect fit. 2d. As the baluster can be placed in the step in any desira- ble position, minor defects can be disposed of to advantage. 3d. The base is not disfigured by accidental saw cuts. 4tli. No danger of splitting the step, if the 'mortise is reasonably correct, as the curved portion of the baluster be- ing the point of least resistance, is flattened when forced in the mortise. DIRECTIONS. Cut the mortises in the steps for 1)4, 1?4, and 2 inch balusters inch square at the top, and bevelled as shown in the accom- panying templet; chip off a piece of the cone in order to make a flat bearing at the back; glue and drive in as in Fig. 3; cut off the projecting portion of the cone flush with the end of the step, Fig. 2. For 2)4 and 2)4 inch balusters, retain the same bevel, but cut the mortise 1% inch square at the top, and proportionally large at the bottom; do not cut the mortises any larger ; if they ai’e cut slightly smaller at the bottom, the effect will be to draw the baluster down tighter on the step. For those possessing a Boring Machine or a Variety Moulder, Fig. 4 is the quickest mode, as the step can be bored from the under side with a bit ground to the proper angle, or a tapered cutter placed in the top of the spindle of a Variety Moulder, and the step run up to a stop on the table. ►fr, . — THE STANDARD WOOD TURNING COMPANY. We use only thoroughly seasoned materials. The plain parts are filled with Wheeler’s Patent Filler and Oiled. Where panels are shown, they are Veneered with French Burl and Polished. DIRECTIONS Necessary for Ordering IT AIR RAILING For Stair Railing, Straight Flight.— We require the size of rise and step, as sawed out on string board, the number of risers, the size of cylinder from face to face of string or face board, which way it turns at head of stairs, and the number of feet of straight rail required at landing, measured from the spring line of cylinder. Unless we receive plan show- ing otherwise, we always suppose the top riser for a straight flight of stairs to be placed at the edge or spring of cylinder. For Circular or Wiuding Stairs. — We should have an exact plan of stairs as built, giving the width of rise and step, the location of risers in cylinder, etc.; and. when there are diminish- ed steps above or below the spring line, or joint of cylinder, give the width of each step from face of rise to face of rise, as per plan No. 1. Sawed Pieces for Twists. — Parties wishing to order sawed pieces for twists can enclose in a letter a paper pattern, cut the exact shape of face moulds, marking the number of each kind and the thickness required, and we will saw out and forward them, charging only the measurement of lumber used, with time of marking out and sawing added. * * + THE STANDARD AVOOD Tl'RXIXG COMPANY.
