Contrivances for hanging sliding doors from above, instead of placing the rail on the floor and having sheaves and rollers mortised into the lower rail, are distinctly American, and if we mistake not, had their origin in the city of Philadelphia. The advantages of hanging a door from above are several. There is required less guiding fixtures, and, accordingly, less friction is encountered and less force is required to operate the door. Hanging a door from the top saves any obstruction in the shape of rail or guide on the floor, and therefore per- mits the carpet to extend through from one room to the other without break. The Sheaves illustrated show one style of an improvement in articles of this kind introduced. No. 1 shows a 6-inch with Hand Rail Nut, suitable for a door three feet or more in width and one and three-quarters inches or more in thickness. No. 2 gives a 4-inch, same style of Nut, and intended for lighter doors than just mentioned, in which a lighter Sheave than the 6-inch may be used. No. 3 displays a 6-inch with flat frame, to be used where individuals object to boring the doors for the Hand Rail Pattern, and, also, where appearance is not a matter of importance. Where this form is used, the bar is let in flush or level with the surface and painted over. No. 4 exhibits a 4-inch Sheave of the same fashion as No. 3. The Frames are all made entirely of Wrought Iron. The Wheels of Iron, with a Composition Pin. The Rail is Wrought Steel Bar, two inches wide and one quarter of an inch thick, dressed semi-cylindrically or round on the upper edge to fit the Sheave, and drilled for screws to fasten it on a horizontal piece of timber which is attached to the studding. The Rail may be made heavier if desired. 6 inch, No. 1 each, $1. 25 | 6 inch, No. 3 each, 31.25 4 inch, No. 2, “ 1. 10 | 4 inch, No. 4 “ 1.10 Steel Rail, 2x% per foot, .16 | Steel Rail, 2>^x^, per foot, .25 6 inch, No. 5, Extra Deep Groove for very Heavy Door, with Hand Rail Nut, each, 1.50 6 inch, No. 6, Extra Deep Groove for very Heavy Door, with wrought Flat Frame, “ 1.50 ?6 J. SHANNON & SONS, PHILA 79 American Adjustable Anti-Friction Sliding Door Hangers. Cut shows half a set. The above cut illustrates the AMERICAN HANGER in position. These Hangers have advantages over all others, being more simple in construction, strong rand easily adjusted. They require no deep mortising in top or side of door as is the case with other Hangers, making them less difficult to hang and giving the screws a perfect hold. In construction all wearing surfaces are carefully milled to insure smoothness in running. A Malleable Iron Wedge, having a rise and fall of over an inch, is ad- justed by a set screw, and carries the jdiole weight of the door. All strain comes between the stirrups directly on the wedge and never on the adjusting screw. Hangei's work equally well on single or double, either light or heavy doors — requiring the slightest touch to move them. Price includes Hangers for double doors (single doors half price), and includes Iiard wood track for the Hangers to run upon. No. 218. Size Measurement from under head to point. These Screws can be readily driven with a hammer their entire length into the most thoroughly seasoned oak, maple, hickory, or other hard wood ; or, if greater holding strength be required, they may be partially driven by hammering, and then turned to place with a screw-driver. In all cases they can be easily removed with a screw-driver, regardless of the manner in which they may have been driven. The head is made convex to strengthen it and prevent its splitting when struck with a hammer. The thread is of the ratchet form, which permits its penetration without tearing the wood fibres, and consequently its holding capacity is increased by a large percentage over the ordinary wood screw, driven in the usual manner. The spring is not contained in the butt, but placed in a connecting case between two three leaved butts, which allows the use of a long spring, and when applied to the door and closed nothing is seen more than an ordinary butt for corresponding size of door, avoiding the clumsy appearance usual to spring butts, with the spring contained in them. But one spring is used for each butt, which is attached to the centre of bottom and top centre leaf, giving the spring a purchase power in closing equal to the distance from axis to centre of leaf as it uncoils itself, in addition to contraction in length of spring sustained in opening the door. But little labor or mechanical skill is required in applying them. By drawing a top and bottom pin on opposite sides, one outside leaf is released to apply to door, and when replaced will allow the other outside leaf to be taken off in the same way to be applied to jam, and when hung the door can be removed same as any ordinary Loose Pin Butt. The Double Acting Blank Butt is intended to be used with Spring Butt to reduce the cost on doors, light enough for one spring to operate them. The same general description applies to the Single Action Spring Butt, except having but two leaves. It is applied to the door like a Fast Joint Butt. J. SHANNON & SONS, PHILA. hi ENGINE HOUSE TRIPS. The Engine House Trip is used with the Electric Fire Alarm System, for the purpose of shortening the time required to make ready to leave the house after an alarm comes in. The trip is placed alongside the alarm bell and by the first backward motion of the hammer of the gong preparatory to striking, the automatic trip lever is freed, which throws the stall doors open, also stopping the clock at the same instant, showing the exact time the alarm comes in. The whole connection is made by simply pulling down the lever at the lower end of the case. It can be arranged to light the gas if desired. It is simple in construction and not likely to get out of order. We take pleasure in refering to Chief Engineer Cantlin, of the Philadelphia Fire Department ; Captain Stillman, of the Fire Insurance Patrol, Philadelphia ; Keystone Hook & Ladder Co., Reading, Pa.; Vigilant Fire Co., York, Pa.; Chief Engineer, A. SHANNON & SONS, 1020 MARKET STREET, FHiia. I 12 J. B. SHANNON & SONS, PHILA. ENGINE HOUSE DOOR SPRINGS. To any one who has seen the rapid prepara- tion made for getting an engine to the scene of a fire after an alarm has been sounded, it will be plain that the efficiency of the department in some measure depends upon how suddenly the door can be opened au- tomatically. Systems vary somewhat as be- tween different cities, although in the main they agree. The origi- nal alarm moves the lever, which releases the horses, and opens the stable doors. The horses rush out, and place themselves alongside the pole of the engine. At the same instant, men are ready to hook the traces and attach the breast chains. By this time the driver is on his seat and the engine men in their places. All is ready for the door to open. The driver reaches above his head, pulls a ring attached to a rope that releases the front doors, which in turn swing open by the force of some such spring as we show. It is evident that considerable power is required in a spring for this purpose, for as the doors start to open, the horses rush forward as though it were not possible for any- thing to be between them and the street. If the doors should fail to swing clear back, there would at once be either an engine or a door requiring considerable repairs. When it is considered that from the time the alarm is sounded until the engine is out of the house only 8, or, at the most, io seconds have elapsed, it will be seen how necessary great strength and efficiency of parts become. Suitable for any Door where a strong, durable Spring is required, made of the best quality of Steel, in three sizes. By their construction these Springs are adapted to swing open or to close a door. As the Arm is now arranged it is intended to close a Door, and if the spring is wanted to open a door, place the Arm on the other side of the pulley. each. No. 921. Spring made of ^ in.
