THE SOUTHERN COTTON OIL COMPANY SAVANNAH GEORGIA PAINT DEPARTMENT Special Paints for Every Purpose T HIS book is designed to be helpful to the pur- chaser of paint — whether it be for the beautify- ing of a handsome residence or an inexpensive cottage or the protection of a manufacturing plant. Our endeavor has been to show the use, value and necessity of different kinds of paint for different pur- poses as well as to offer suggestions that may bring satisfaction and economy to the users of our paints. Women delight in a home that is attractive, both inside and out. There is no one thing that brings them more joy and saves them more hard work than well-painted woodwork, walls, floors and ceilings. Paint is sanitary, easily kept clean, also it brightens up and makes more livable and healthful every room in the house. A few examples of the treatment of exteriors have been carefully worked out with the view towards offering helpful suggestions and will be found on pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 18. Also on pages 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 will be found color suggestions for interior decoration. The short talk on color harmony on page 16, if read carefully, will enable anyone to make a pleasing selection of colors which will be in keeping with the surroundings of the house. We are always glad to have our customers write us for information and to help them in any way we can, as we consider no sale complete until our customers are entirely satisfied. Paint Specialists The Paint Department of The Southern Cotton Oil Company has always made all of its paints for special uses — each kind the best that can be made for its particular purpose. For residences where fine appearance is desired and the lighter colors are most frequently used, a lead, zinc and oil paint is best. For mills, factories, barns, etc., where hard service is expected, another kind of paint is more economical and serves its purpose better. For interior walls, structural steel, tin roofs, wagons and farm implements, machinery, ships, etc., each service requires that the paint to give the longest wear and greatest protection be made of the materials known to give the best results in each case. There never has been and never will be any effort by The Southern Cotton Oil Company to meet low Three prices by cheapening its product. Each of our paints will always be sold on its own merits at the lowest price consistent with the quality of our products. From Factory to Consumer Direct When you buy paints from The Southern Cotton Oil Company, you are buying direct from the manufacturer, who accepts all re- sponsibilities for their quality and who guar- antees complete satisfaction to the purchaser. By dealing directly with the manufacturer you are able to buy these high quality paints, at about the prices charged by other manu- facturers to jobbers and dealers for paints of the same quality. We have but one price to all our customers, and our customers save the profits of the middleman which is a large part of the price of paint when sold at retail. Proper Wear A properly made paint, which is applied in the correct manner, should neither crack, peel nor blister. The paint skin should be firm and elastic without extreme hardness or chalkiness. The wear should be gradual Four and even and when repainting is necessary the surface should be in the proper condition for applying the new paint without the neces- sity of scraping or burning off the old paint. Years of actual service under all conditions have proved that the paints described in this book will wear an unusual length of time and that when in need of repainting the surface will be in the proper condition. A Good Investment Good paint is a dividend-paying invest- ment. Cheap paints are always an expense. Good paint increases the value of the struc- ture to which it is applied by protecting it from decay and improving its appearance. Cheap paints are frequently harmful and re- quire frequent renewing, and as the cost of painting is always greater than the cost of paint, the cheapest paint becomes the most expensive. The additional years of wear in good paint reduces its cost by postponing the necessity for repainting. Painting of a home or a factory should be considered of as great importance as any de- tail of business — as an investment or an econ- omy — and unless the purchaser has a special knowledge of paint he should purchase only from a manufacturer whose integrity is known. Fifteen Color Harmony A LITTLE forethought in the selection of colors for the painting of a house * or a manufacturing plant, often saves much disappointment in the final result. Of course, each owner has his own ideas of color and these ideas can be carried out, but the consideration of a few fundamental points in fitness and harmony are likely to assure a pleasing effect. The location of the house, its immediate surroundings, also the architectural style of the building — all are important factors in the selection of a color plan. If a house is on a street with other houses close by, the colors selected should be related to the colors of the houses on either side; otherwise the entire group will be out of harmony, whereas if the proper selection is made, the whole group becomes pleasing. If a house is situated by itself and is with- out a background of trees, it is usually de- sirable to paint it with a warm color such as red, brown or yellow. These body colors may be brightened up by using lighter colors for the trimming. A house situated in the woods, where the background is dark, should ordinarily be painted with a light color such as cream, light yellow, buff, pearl gray or possibly white. On the other hand, for a low house of the bungalow type, it is often desirable to have the colorings fit in with its surroundings. A good combination for such a house is a dark brown body with a dark green roof, and trim of light green or cream color. For a house standing on a hill without trees, a contrast is needed and the light colors are not so pleasing. Here a medium gray color w'ith a red roof and a light gray or white trim sets off the house to the best advantage. Trimming The use of light colors for trimming serves two purposes: to brighten the appearance of the building — also to accentuate its archi- tectural lines. To produce the desired effect the trim hardly ever need be pure white, in most cases the house is more artistic if the trimming is some light tint which harmonizes with the body colors. Several examples of harmonious house painting, following the lines suggested, will be found in this book on pages 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17 and 18. Nineteen BRIDGE Sco-Co Heavy Service Metal Paint Black No. 73. Twenty When to Paint and How to Paint THE SURFACE — The surface to be painted must always be dry and free from dust, grease or soot. Be sure that the wood is dry. Moisture is one of the most frequent causes of blistering, cracking and scaling. WEATHER CONDITIONS — Painting should never be attempted on a wet day or after a period of damp weather. Paint always works best on a clear, sunny day and paint- ing should never be done in frosty weather as chilled paint is difficult to apply. THE PRIMING COAT— On new work it is best to use thin paint as it covers more evenly and adheres more perfectly to the surface. Never under any circumstances use ochre for a priming coat. Each coat should be thoroughly dry before the next is applied, but each coat must follow the other within reasonable time. The best and most economical results can- not be expected from a priming and second coal only. Three coats are always better than two. How to Find the Required Quantity Assume your building measures 32 feet wide by 43 feet long and is 20 feet high: Front 32 feet Side Rear Other side 43 feet 32 feet 43 feet Multiply by height Total 150 feet total 20 feet 3000 square feet Dividing the total by 250 (the approximate number of square feet a gallon of paint will cover, two coats) shows that 12 gallons is the quantity required for the body of the building. About one gallon of trimming color should be ordered for every five gallons of body color. For window blinds, order 1 gallon for each 10 pairs of blinds. To estimate the quantity of paint required for the walls and ceiling of a room — for a roof or other surface, make the measurements in the same manner and figure accordingly, dividing the total by the number indicated as the covering capacity for each different paint. If you are in doubt, send us measurements and we will gladly advise you the quantity required. Mixed, Ready for Application Heavy-Service Cottage Paints For Wooden Buildings Heavy-Service Metal Paints For Metal Surfaces T HE ideal paint for Industrial Plants, Farms, Cotton Mills and wherever long service is required. It is made especially to withstand extreme hard usage where conditions are unusually severe and is not affected by the sulphuric fumes around Fertilizer Plants or barns where decaying vegetable matter accumulates. From the standpoints of protection, long service and economy, we consider this the very best paint possible to manufacture. It wears like iron and after many years, when re-painting is necessary, the surface is found in perfect condition for the appli- cation of new paint. Actual observation, over a period of fifteen years, proves what this Heavy Service Paint will do. No paint sold for its purpose and at its price, will equal it in fine appearance, protection and long life. Covering capacity, 250 to 300 sq. ft., two coats, per gallon L IKE the Heavy-Service Cottage Paints, this Metal Paint is made to stand hard service. In ^its manufacture, the same valuable materials are used, but in addition it contains a number of inhibitive pigments which act as agents in preventing the start and spreading of rust. Sco-Co Heavy-Service Metal Paint forms the toughest and most elastic paint skin known and is the only paint which makes a skin absolutely non- porous and impervious to moisture. Being elastic it contracts and expands with the metal; being waterproof it keeps moisture away from the metal — therefore preserves the metal. The most rigid tests show that Sco-Co Heavy- Service Metal Paints offer greater protection and outlast any other paints sold for the same purpose. Covering capacity, 250 to 300 sq. ft., one coat, per gallon Sco-Co Heavy-Service Paints work smooth under the brush — they cover a large surface — they wear like iron, and years after other paints have spent their use- fulness they will still give continued protection.
