THE MANUFACTURE OF GAS. HE fundamental principle essential to success in mak- ing gas from any volatile fluid, is that TIIE MATE- RIAL MUST BE SUPPLIED EXACTLY AS EAST, AND ONLY AS FAST AS IT IS USED. It required years of costly and persistent trial to effect this simple discovery; but now that it has been made, the reason for it is plain to he seen of all men. Evaporation — converting a fluid into vapor or gas — absorbs heat. Evaporation, sufficiently rapid and long continued, will result in freezing. The most volatile fluids, such as ammonia and chloroform, can be reduced to solidity by evaporation. Consequently, when any highly carbonized fluid is subjected to a current of air and vaporized — making illuminating air-gas — the tendency of the operation is to cool the material, and it presently becomes so condensed that evaporation stops : the production of gas ceases. The chilled fluid must be disposed of in some Avay, and a new supply provided before the work can go on. To meet these difficulties, numerous devices have been invented, and time, money, and energy expended without stint. Partial successes have been attained, and offered to the public under various names, but the problem never was fairly solved until the discovery of the KEYSTONE FEED. This simple device settles 6 the whole question ! It supplies the material exactly as fast, and only as fast as it is used. This is apparently a trivial matter, but it is to just such seeming trifles we owe the most important inventions. The Yankee notion of putting the eye in the point of the needle gave us the sewing machine ; the single idea of turning the exhaust steam into the smokestack made possi- ble the locomotive and the railroad ; and so the happy suggestion of the KEYSTONE FEED opens the way to a wide field of improvement, the extent of which cannot yet be limited. GASLIGHT FOR ALL. The immediate effect has been to put a PERFECT GASLIGHT within reach of every family in the land. In combination with other inventions, this feed is used in the KEYSTONE SAFETY GAS MACHINE, an apparatus destined to supersede kerosene lamps, and other dangerous devices, in all intelligent communities. VILLAGES, CHURCHES, RURAL HOMES, IN- STITUTIONS, SCHOOLS, FACTORIES, HALLS, LIBRARIES and PUBLIC BUILDINGS can be sup- plied with gaslight as perfectly as the largest city, at cost not exceeding one-quarter the average price of city gas. 7 The KEYSTONE apparatus may be placed in a vault (as shown on fourth page), at any desired distance from the premises to be lighted. It can be supplied and wound up from outside the vault, and need never be touched, except at long intervals, to oil the bearings. It can there- fore be used, with absolute safety, for any of the gas- producing fluids known to commerce, and will make gas more perfectly 1 than any other mechanism ever devised, from any of these substances. But we especially recom- mend, for use in our machine, and every other machine, our KEYSTONE HYDROCARBON OIL. We manufacture this Oil expressly for gas-making pur- poses, and confidently offer it as the best material for this use yet discovered. It is SAFE, CLEAN and ECONO- MICAL. It is admirably adapted for this service, giving a pure Hydrocarbon Gas which burns with an intense white flame of great illuminating power, yet soft and plea- sant to the eye. And we will guarantee, that in our KEYSTONE machine every drop of the oil will be con- verted, leaving not one particle of residuum of any kind. 8 PRICE LIST. No. Number of Lights.
