CURTAINS AND BEDSPREADS OF DANERSK BLOCK PRINTS The English Windsor Beds are especially appropriate for use in antique settings either with original old furniture or with the Danersk reproductions. These have been wonderfully successful when done in very old yellow with fine decorations and overtones of sepia. The value of the Danersk service is chiefly that you can have things finished as you ought to have them. Durability of finish and correct design are essential. We are maintaining a corps of trained workers to carry out the individual ideas of our customers. This service cannot be obtained elsewhere except at exorbitant prices. In making up bedroom sets a wide variety of combinations can be had to suit the different rooms. Customers should bear in mind that the body color and decorative treatment prove the unity of the set. Thus a piece such as No. 701 Chest of Drawers can be used with various ol the Danersk beds. Suggestions for a number of sets will be found at the end of the General Price List. This design has all the strength required. I he turning of the posts, and the proportion of the sizes of the various members to each other, have combined to produce a bed of exceptional beauty. This design is most charming when done in some soft color scheme with a quaint design on the head- board in keeping with the flounce and bedspread. In our Old English walnut or mahogany tones, the Ayer bed will be a pleasure for years to come. This should be used in the larger sizes only. All the cor¬ ners are rounded and softened so that this piece conveys the impression of old-time con¬ struction. The panels offer an exceptional opportunity for artisticdecoration in the charm¬ ing French Basket themes or the more formal lines as desired. Furniture of artistic charm and decorative character cannot well be purchased from stock. Our organization is based on the principle of giving any finish, color scheme and design that our customers may demand. Our whole shop is organized for this purpose. Whenever possible it is best to leave the choice of colors to be used in the decorative themes toour artists. Customers should choose the Body Color and send us a bit of the drapery material. The decorating and finishing of furniture is work that cannot be done by amateurs. 9S2A SQUARE BACK ARM WINDSOR 700 TYROL BUREAU 1601 SETTLE 601 X SUSSEX BED Three-quarter Size 952 SQUARE BACK WINDSOR 1101 COTTAGE BEDSIDE TABLE This bedstead is especially charming in the single sizes, with its triple panelled headboard. Beneath the coverlet is a decorated footboard that is just high enough to hold the mattress and bedding in place; thus the bed has all the advantages of a regulation footboard and is correct in appearance either with or without the bedspread. For a small room we know of no piece that gives such an air of space and dignity. [ ' 2 3 ] 608 y* DUTCH SLAT BACK BEDSTEAD—Single Size 9C0 DUTCH SLAT BACK CHAIR Of recent years in England a certain school of architects and designers has arisen which has evolved furniture of a style more original in conception and livable in character than any that has been created since the days of the cabinetmakers of one hundred years ago. To this general class belong our Old English Windsor and Dutch Slat Back Beds. They are an expression of the best handwork in this country today, and embody the characteristics that are in demand for charming American homes whether in town or country. These beds are best in the narrow sizes. They are equally beautiful when finished in the very antique oak or walnut tones, or painted in some unusual treatment of contrasting colors. [ -4 ] For prices and dimensions, see general price list. Look for the number. Danersk braided rugs for the bed¬ room can be had in all sizes upon order. We make our own rugs and are able to produce them in colors desired within the usual range called for. They are very reasonable in price and are made of new mill ends of fine quality cloth, clean and sanitary and very durable. 1011R EMPIRE ROCKER the painted furniture or in the soft Danersk Bedroom Furniture is full of individuality. Each design has been evolved after much study and the making of many models. The pieces are our own, although the inspiration has come from the past. The most authentic books and photographs of early models have been studied and it has been our constant purpose to produce pieces that will be perma¬ nently valuable. Whether you order these things in the beautiful colors of tones of our antique walnut finish, they 804 POWDER TABLE 1601 CARDIGAN SETTLE will be equally in good taste. The PowderTable is a convenient piece for small rooms. A little manicure table well adapted for the boudoir. We cannot emphasize too strongly the varied possibilities that are open to you by the harmonizing of the finish of your furniture with some attractive cretonne or Old English block printed chintz. This applies equally to the old-time Dutch Slat Backs and hand-made Windsors as well as to the more distinctly Danersk Decorative Furniture. GENERAL NOTE: Do not try to make up SETS of Danersk Furniture where each detail of construction “matches.” Let the scheme of decoration in color, theme, and finish prove the unity of the set. 614 CARVED POLYCHROME BED 809 CARVED POLYCHROME LOWBOY The Carved Polychrome pieces should be made of select solid walnut, and the carvings done in very low relief. Color is applied in a transparent manner to the carving only, thus giving the effect of raised enamel work. The walnut body color is left practically unfinished so that with age it takes on a beautiful patina of a warm purplish tone very different from the usual walnut furniture. The total effect is one that is reminiscent of the very finest furniture that has been produced in the early days in Italy and England in the use of natural wood and color ornamentation, and the pieces thus created will undoubtedly be of increased value as time goes on. [ 2 5 ] 711 CARLTON CHEST OF DRAWERS 1301 AYER MIRROR Note that the decoration is the same theme as that found in the block print DECORATIVE THEME 29 —These pieces illustrate the beauty of the two-tone treatment of body color. Soft jade green frames with old ivory panels and a fine flame colored line around the light parts and on the beads of the turnings. Basketry in tans and flowers in warm Italian coloring. The whole antiqued with sepia. Similar combinations in Chinese blue and gold, etc., are most permanent in their beauty and will surely increase in value as time goes on. This work is not found in stock productions and is of enduring value. Witness the prices paid for the old Venetian pieces in which such coloring is found. PEACOCK AND FOUNTAIN—A 31-inch Chintz. The flowers are hand-wrought after the manner of fine Venetian ironwork. The wrought iron is done by an artist ironworker, and is comparable to that done by the famous metal workers of Cortina. I he petals of the flowers are colored in any shades desired, and finished with our secret process diamond-hard lacquer. The volutes and modellings touched with yellow — a color scheme of delicate sweet pea shades of lavender, blue, pink, etc. make of these Andirons, objects of great beauty. The flower units are removable for those periods of the year when fires are a necessity, and can be put in place again during the months when fireplaces are not usually objects of interest. Prices are not listed in the general price list, but will be quoted on request. 201 MARY ANDIRONS. An attractive color scheme is antique ivory with flowers of debonair decoration. The Corner Cupboard is well adapted for nursery use. This Wardrobe contains one shelf and four sliding trays, and an extension fixture for hanging baby clothes, which enables you to bring all the clothes into full view. If you wish the Wardrobe lined with some attractive cretonne, a slight additional charge is made, and you should so stipulate in your order. A much more economical form of construction than the original with its three deep drawers. It also contains two hand- polished rods for the winding of lace center- pieces. There are the trays for the flat silver, and the proper drawers for the napkins and doylies. This method of constructing the panels allows of any other treatment of the interior desired for special uses. The beautiful hand-made pulls of finest brass, black mouldings, and ornaments, and rich tone of main body of the piece, make this one of the most valuable offered by the Danersk Shops. Historically, it belongs to the period of Queen Elizabeth. In the early days of New England, one of them found its way to Boston, where it has been one of the chief treasures of the Putnam family to this day. 900A 916A 1146 SLAT BACK ARM CHAIR VASE BACK ARM CHAIR MELON BALL TABLE [ 3 ° ] 2310 ENGLISH CHEST OF TRAYS Period—Early Seventeenth Century English Hutches were used in the Seventeenth Century household for locking away the valuable damasks, linens and other fabrics for safe keeping. It is made with a mahogany work basket and beneath it a revolving spool box with lids that lift up. Inside are divisions for needles, spools, embroidery yarns, etc. One feature in particular makes this sewing stand very desirable and that is its light weight, making it possible to carry it about easily. Unique and graceful in appearance and of unquestioned usefulness, this Danersk piece lends a quaint charm to the room in which it is placed. When so desired, it is furnished with a revolving swift for winding yarns, contrived after an old Colonial model. [ 3 2 ] 2307 HUTCH OR TALL CHEST Period—English and Colonial, 1690 The Dower Chest—symbol of joy and mystery! Each nation and time may be told by this article of furni¬ ture. Its purpose called out all that was best in the artist and craftsman that adorned and made it, and the giver en¬ deavored to have himself expressed in the gift—for was it not to contain the first treasures of a new home and the choicest that the famdy might have in future years? It is absolutely impossible to obtain the old- time strength and charm by any other method of making. The settees are built to last for generations and will in¬ crease in value as time goes on. They are finished in the antique natural wood tones or in the Danersk lacquer colors. 1615 WINDSOR SETTEE COLONIAL DAY BED Period—American Colonial, 1740 The light turned Day Bed was the forerunner of the beautiful Chip¬ pendale pieces of this general design and of the French Chaise Longue. In the Colonies at the time of Queen Anne the model for this day bed of the Danersk Shops was fashioned. Lightness, strength and comfort are the chief characteristics of this in¬ teresting piece of Colonial furniture. When it is upholstered in one of the gay new prints, with pillows to match, it is well adapted for use in the large studio living-rooms of many of the modern apartments, or for use, as in the old days, in halls or sleeping-rooms. Solid mahogany or the native mountain mahogany are the best woods to be used in making the day bed. It is finished in the lovely French polish, or colored to suit the room in which it is to be placed. 1400 CARLTON DESK 993 TYROL CHAIR 1304 SIMPLE COLONIAL MIRROR SPECIAL VENETIAN CHAIR (Price on request) 1507 VENETIAN CHAISE LONGUE [ 41 ] 2204 EXTENSION TABLE BOOKRACK 1132 TABLE—Black top and edges; soft gray body color, with decorations in green, ivory, and old rose—or any scheme desired 2100 CARDIGAN DAY BED 2202 WALL BOOKSHELF 1132 OVAL DROP LEAF TABLE 908R SLIPPER ROCKER 2202 WALL BOOKSHELF—48 inches long, 16J4 inches high, 10 inches deep. Chosen because of its low inviting character, it has appealed to the many customers who have seen it in our exhibition rooms. The back is especially graceful in line and angle of declination. It is used with our Chippendale writing table and in roomy bed chambers and boudoirs. The workmanship of the hand-sewn edges and soft air cushion of English down is especially noteworthy. The piece is built to be covered and recovered for years to come. Notes on Upholstered Furniture ENGLISH EASY CHAIR The sewing of all the edges and the building out of the flat sur¬ faces is done with the highest art. This chair is made from the raw material to the finished product entirely in our own shops. The surfaces will be smooth and even for years to come. It will never get lumpy. You cannot buy this grade of work for less anywhere in the United States. THE KATE GREENAWAY WORK TABLE speaks , of cosy chimney corners and quiet evenings, stolen from the all- engrossing activities of our times. The picture shows its usefulness, but the fineness of hand workmanship on the old-fashioned snake-foot standard and dish-turned top can only be appreciated from the daily associations of possession. j feawtslt 1005 ENGLISH EASY CHAIR A Couch of supreme comfort. The department is in charge of an upholsterer who was for seven years engaged in work for Buckingham Palace, where he learned the art of producing upholstered furniture of the most luxurious character, and the scientific construction of air cushions of English down with the interior box divisions. An infinite amount of pains is required to build up one of these uphol¬ stered pieces, but the result obtained is well worth the labor entailed. Pieces thus made will last a lifetime and can be covered and recovered for years to come. The pieces here illustrated were done in a soft-toned block printed linen for a country house. Brocade, velour, or some heavy material is more generally used. Your own materials will be applied or samples will be sent you. This chair was modeled after a very correct old English arm chair, and each curve and proportion has been studied so that it is as nearly perfect a wing chair as we can produce. The arms extend to the back, offering a rest for the elbows when one is reading—a feature, the absence of which, renders the best looking wing chair a failure from point of correctness and comfort. This English Draw Top Table is intended for use back of a Davenport or as a regular library table. The leaves can be pulled out without disturbing the articles on the top. It should be made of solid walnut and inlaid with ebony or of old oak and finished in a very antique manner. A Vase Back Chair in ming blue or decorated in the old Venetian colorings is a charming addition to any drawing-room. Danersk Lamp Shades are made in lovely block-printed silks or any solid color, as may be ordered. For prices, see the general price-list according to numbers. The Draw Top Table is the earliest form of extension table made. The end leaves draw out and rise to the level of the top at the same time. In this way the chairs possess the maximum of strength and elasticity, and that other quality so necessary to an absolutely individual and exclusive production—the charming irregularity that speaks of hand work and care in the making, and thus of durability. We make our own rugs of new cloth—clean and sanitary. Woven in a very wide variety of colors. When orders are placed three weeks in advance of date of shipment required, we can combine colors according to the cus¬ tomer’s order in any sizes (either oval or round). A distinctive room of great charm can be evolved by the use of Danersk Braided Rugs, Block Prints and Decorative Furniture. Done in color schemes that express the individuality of the purchaser. To buy stock productions as made for thousands is like buying a ready-made suit as compared with having clothes made for you according to models that please you. The home is the most important thing in our lives. It is that for which all the industry and thought is about. Surely it demands a little planning in advance. Place your order for the choice of pieces you really want for any given room. And place it ahead of time so that you can evolve colors and schemes that you will never see in other homes and that your children will love for years to come. Danersk Hand-made Braided Rugs have all of the good points of the original old-time Colonial braided rugs and none of the bad features of the modern machine-made imitations. They are produced in the homes of people living in the very district of New England that originated these rugs, and are made from clean, pure mill ends of brand new material which is distributed for the purpose. The hand- braided rugs will last for twenty-five years without showing appreciable wear and tear, whereas machine-made rugs will go to pieces in a very short time, due to the following facts : First. With hand-made rugs, strips 1 y 2 inches wide are rolled so that no frayed edges appear and all the surfaces are smooth and clean. Second. Each circle of color is complete, and butt ends are fastened together so cleverly by hand that one cannot detect the joint, whereas machine-made rugs have to depend upon a continuous braid, regardless of color, thus presenting a very uneven and incorrect appearance. Third. Machine-stitched rugs have a zig-zag sewing that is on the wearing surface of the rug, and is soon worn through, causing the rug to come to pieces. Fourth. Hand-stitched rugs are sewn on solid rolled braids, and the stitches gradually turn into the center as the rug is used, with the result that it becomes the same on both sides, giving two wearing surfaces. Fifth. Machine-made rugs have frayed edges along the braids. The strands are not rolled and do not possess thickness. The surfaces have folds and wrinkles that wear and fray. Sixth. Hand-made rugs necessarily cost more than machine production, because the most skilled worker, employed ten hours a day, cannot produce a rug the size of 9 x 12 in less than one month, and the ordinary worker in her home requires three months’ time to produce a similar rug. MATERIALS—Braided rugs are offered as follows: 1. Sateen in solid colors, full of contrast and vigor. 2. Mixed colors of cotton cretonnes, strong and durable. 3. Woolens in soft pastel shades. COLOR—If you will send a bit of your cretonne or drapery material, we will supply the best rug from a large stock of forty different colors and patterns to go with your scheme. The fact that cretonne rugs are made from mill ends of practically all the good prints produced in this country makes it possible for us to offer stock braided rags that will fit with any color scheme. DELIVERIES—All Danersk Rugs are made to your order, and the time for possible delivery varies according to the size and intricacy of the rugs. [ 8o ] SIZE—Standard sizes of braided rugs, both oval and circular, are listed in Price List for Danersk Accessories. Any special size desired will be made. SETS—For large rooms, it is customary to order a number of moderate sized rugs rather than one large rug, both as a matter of economy in cost and artistic treatment. PRICES — See Special Price List of Danersk Accessories. For special sizes and colors, an additional price is charged, as stated in the Accessory Price List. NOTE—These rugs are the best possible workmanship, and inasmuch as they are made to order, cannot be returned. You save freight and trans¬ portation by having them packed with the bed. Third: you insure immediate use of your bed as soon as it arrives. Fourth , it is impractical to send specifications to local mattress makers. SANITATION—Small mattress makers do not scruple to work up used materials into their products. Danersk Mattresses are made in a huge, well-lighted modern concrete factory, where materials are purchased in such quantities that all new, pure sterilized hair and feathers are absolutely guaranteed. IMPERIAL EDGE means that an additional amount of pure, long South American hair has been sewn over and over in a roll around the top and bottom edges to insure the proper dres¬ sing of the bed. It prevents an uneven appearance after the bed is made. NO TUFT is the most luxurious method of making a mattress known. It means a per¬ fectly smooth cover that always keeps in shape and layers of lamb’s-wool make the top very soft, while all the spring of the finest selected long hair comes from within.
