Y., to prepare a catalogue of the College, respectfully present the accom- panying results of their labors. To insure accuracy, the catalogue mainly compiled by the late Dr. George H. Tucker, which was published by the Faculty in 1859, has been taken as the standard ; and, in justice to his memory, the Committee cheerfully express their admiration of the careful attention to details which everywhere appears in the work. They regret, how- ever, that the circular calling for particulars, which was sent to every graduate, whose post-office address could be obtained, did not meet with the attention its importance demanded ; but even for this neglect there was found a partial compensation in the zeal of others. The thanks of all interested in the welfare of their Alma Mater are espe- cially due to Drs. Robert C. McEwen, William F. Thoms, John C. Barron, Stephen W. Roof, Charles T. Poore, and others, for their generous co-operation with the Committee in obtaining essential infor- mation. The other sources from which facts have been derived are as follows : — Catalogues of Literary Colleges ; documents and replies to inquiries emanating from the Medical Bureaus of the U. S. Army and Navy; War Department Bulletins, published by various Medical Journals, or furnished through official channels ; the Library of the N. Y. Historical Society ; the Records of the City Inspector's Depart- ment, N. Y. City, and those of the Board of Health, Brooklyn, N. Y. ; Memorials, Biographical Sketches contained in the N. Y. Medical Register, and other publications ; the families of deceased alumni, and 6 COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS. monumental inscriptions. In addition, identities have been estab- lished, whenever practicable, by autographic letters. But, with all these aids, the Committee still feel their work incom2:)lete, as there are many graduates concerning whom nothing can be ascertained ; they would, therefore, respectfully ask for additional information to be com- municated to the Secretary of the Association, for use in future years. Additional information having been received since the catalogue went to press, attention is called to the list of additions and correc- tions at the close of the work. GURDON BUCK, SAMUEL ST. JOHN, ELLSWORTH ELIOT, HENRY B. SANDS, ,JOHN SHRADY, Jr. * Names thus marked are those of deceased persons. Names italicised are those of clergymen or missionaries. HISTOMCAL SKETCH OF THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK. The College of Physicians and Surgeons, N. Y. City, was chartered March 12th, 1807, by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, pursuant to an Act of the Legislature, passed March 24, 1791. The officers were elected May 5, 1807, and the first course of lectures, commencing November 7th of the same year, were delivered in a small two-story building in Robinson Street. About the close of the Session, however, the College having received from the Legislature an endowment of twenty thousand dollars, were enabled to purchase an edifice in Pearl Street better adapted for their pur- poses, which was formally opened for the reception of students in November, 1808. The Medical Department of Columbia College having been dis- continued in November, 1813, the union of the two schools, as recom- mended by the Regents of the University as far back as April 1st, 1811, was, at length, consummated March 7th, 1814, and a com- modiously arranged brick building on the north side of Barclay Street, near Broadway, secured for the new organization. This alliance, however, proved to be of but short duration, since some of the Faculty withdrew, and, under the authority of Queens College, N. J., established the " New Medical Institution " in a large building in Duane Street. This latter school suspended in 1816. At this crisis in its affairs, the Regents of the University reorgan- ized the College under an entirely new charter, which gave its manage- ment to a Board of twenty-five Trustees, whose tenure of office was subject to the will of the Regents themselves. In February, 1821, to the dissensions between the College and the N. Y. County Medical Society, which began sometime during 1819, 8 COLLEGE OF PHYSICL«lNS AND SURGEONS. there succeeded new causes of discord between the Trustees and the Faculty. These culminated in the resignation of the entire Faculty in April, 1826, and the appointment of a new corps of Professors a few months afterwards. The original Faculty, soon after their resignation, revived the Medical Institution, under the auspices of Rutgers (formerly Queens) College, New Brunswick, N. J. ; but, by legislative enactment, the diplomas were afterwards rendered so manifestly illegal that the Faculty abandoned the contest and the school ceased to exist. By a new provision in the Constitution, the Faculty were hence- forth excluded from seats in the Board of Trustees, which was now to be composed of a majority of gentlemen who did not belong to the medical profession. As a result, both bodies have since worked in unison for the common good. The College removed from Barclay to Crosby Street, in Novem- ber, 1837, where its sessions were held up to the inauguration of the present edifice, January 22, 1856. Since then, nothing noteworthy in its history occurred until the Legislature, by an amendment of its charter, March 24th, 1860, dele- gated the authority of the Eegents to the Trustees ; and, in June of this year also, the institution was constituted the Medical Department of Columbia College, and now bears the title of the College of Phy- sicians and Surgeons in the City of New York — Medical Department of Columbia College.
