In presenting for inspection the following illustrations, we wish to thank our many friends and patrons who have so kindly favored us in the past. A modern plant—equipped with all the latest time-saving machinery—together with an organization of loyal and experienced employees—enables us to offer you strictly high grade work at a reasonable price. “Quality first—then price,” has been our motto, and the many repeat orders we receive assure us that the quality of our work is remembered long after the price has been forgotten. We appreciate that if you receive goods from us that are entirely satisfactory, you will be only too glad to speak a good word for us. Our endeavor always will be to give you the best, at the lowest price consistent with high grade material and workmanship. You will find that we show a more complete line of Iron Picket and Woven Wire Lawn and Farm fence than any other one house. In asking for prices on fence we suggest that you make a selection of one or more styles which you like. State height (and size picket wanted, if wrought iron), then make a rough diagram showing the number of feet, the number of, and kind of gates, as per instructions on page 7. We will then be in position to make you an estimate giving our lowest price with full specifications regarding the size or rails, depth of foundations, distance between pickets and line posts, also size of posts, etc. We can also give you weight and amount of freight you will have to pay, or will make a delivered price if desired. Do not overlook specifications as these are what count and determine the cost of producing a fence. It is very easy for the artist to use a little imagination, and make a very ordinary fence look as heavy as he likes. ENTERPRISE FENCE AND GATES are drawn to scale and have not been touched up with the view of making a handsome-looking picture for the purpose of misleading the buyer. ENTERPRISE FOUNDRY AND FENCE CO. Established 1883. Incorporated 1900. Please do not cut illustrations out of this catalogue—give name and number of article desired. We will know exactly what you want. ENTEBPBISE FOUNDBY AND FENCE COMPANY WHAT OUR PRICE INCLUDES. Our price on WROUGHT IRON PICKET FENCE includes all panels; line posts, with brace rods and heavy cast iron bases (as near 3 feet apart as possible) ; adjustable support under center of each panel; all rail connections, bolts, nuts, and one coat of black paint at the factory. Price on ORNAMENTAL WIRE FENCE includes all fabric; line posts with heavy cast iron bases (as near 8 feet apart as space will permit), all necessary post ornaments, top rail and all fittings; braided wire for the top and one coat of black paint for all pipe and posts. Corner, end and gate posts are measured in as fence and are charged extra, according to the style of fence you select. Each post has all necessary fittings so that each panel can be properly attached, also hinges and catches for gates. SPECIAL NOTICE.—We recommend and guarantee ENTERPRISE Cast Iron Post Bases. Cast iron will never rust out in the ground, being a natural product of the earth. The ore is melted into Pig Iron and from this we make our bases or foundations. A cast iron foundation to withstand the strain to which it is subjected, must necessarily be heavier than if made of steel—naturally costs more money. Most manufacturers use steel as it is lighter and cheaper. We guarantee our cast iron bases against decay or breakage—accidents ex¬ cepted. Steel and wrought iron when placed in the ground will soon corrode and rust out. Insist on getting cast iron post bases-—they are indestructible and will pay for themselves in satisfaction. Walk and Drive Gates are measured in as fence and are charged extra. (See prices on our list, page 165.) Standard width of walk gates is 3 feet 6 inches for the Wire Lawn, and 3 feet 4 inches for Iron Gates; Standard width of drive gates is 10 feet on both iron and wire fence. We can, however, make any of our gates to conform with any width opening desired. Everything will come to you complete, ready for erection. DESCRIPTION OF WROUGHT IRON PICKET FENCE. (Read Carefully.) STANDARD SIZES AND HEIGHTS FOR RESIDENCES. (Any other height desired made to order.) Pickets or 7/16 inches round or square and y 2 inch round are spaced on 4-inch centers; Rails 1 inch channel or l^xiy. inch angle steel. Standard height 36 inches. FOR PRIVATE GROUNDS, PARKS AND CEMETERIES. Pickets y 2 inch square and y inch round or square, are spaced on 4-inch centers. Rails 1 yxy inch channel or iy 2 x\y inch angle steel. Standard height 46 inches. FOR PUBLIC GROUNDS AND FACTORIES. Pickets and y inches round or square are spaced on 5-inch centers; Rails 2xy inch channel, or 2x2 inch angle steel. Standard height 60 inches. Square pickets are always set diagonal, unless ordered set square in the rail. PICKETS—It is very essential that the pickets are placed in the rails so they will not rattle, or become loose and fall out. The ENTERPRISE Pneumatic Caulking machine, which is our own invention, squeezes or presses the steel in the rail around the picket so tight that the pickets and rails seem to be made of one piece. The old method of caulking with a hammer and chisel, which is still employed by some manufacturers, is very uncertain and not at all satisfactory. It is very important to have the pickets well secured to the rails. INDt ANAI'OUS INDIANA U.S. A. 5 We build fence any height you wish and of any size material you specify. (See our price list page 163, for different heights and sizes.) Our fence is made in sections as near 8 feet long as space will permit, with substantial panel support. Each section has a line post with proper fittings and brace, together with a heavy cast iron foundation that cannot be raised by frost and that will never corrode or rust. Necessary provision is made every 8 feet for contraction and expansion so heat and cold will not affect the fence. For coping or wall, we furnish either a cast iron shoe to bolt to the wall or a one-inch square line post to go into the wall so that the panels can be attached in a neat, permanent substantial manner. We recommend the one-inch square line post, as no brace-rod is necessary to make it rigid. GATES are made to conform with design of fence and unless otherwise ordered will be made for standard size openings. Our gates are extra well made, securely riveted and mortised together and braced so that they will never warp, sag, or twist out of shape. Hinges, throw-bars and attachments are extra heavy, as we know the rough usage a gate usually receives. The ornamental scroll work is hand forged, securely fitted to each gate in an artistic manner. Many unique designs of gates are shown in our catalogues Y and Z. The beauty of the ENTERPRISE gate is in the workmanship, the symmetrical lines, and the well-proportioned size of the material used in their construction. We have many other designs in our office which are not shown in this ctaalogue. Special and original designs will gladly be submitted to customers who want something different. Our draftsmen are thoroughly competent to execute any ideas you may have—we make no charge for special designs. Correspond¬ ence is solicited. CORNER, END AND GATE POSTS are interchangeable; can furnish you any pattern you select. (See cuts of different styles on pages 11, 12, 13 and 14, also our price list.) When writing for estimates, please send DIAGRAM showing space to be enclosed, number of walk and drive gates, also corner, end and gate posts. In measuring give distance from center of gates to each corner or end. If ground is not level, give the grade in inches, marking on diagram the low and high point. This will enable us to make up the fence to fit exactly, the space it is to occupy. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING ENTERPRISE WROUGHT IRON PICKET FENCE. Get exact location of corner, end and gate posts, (refer to the diagram we send with each order and see if measurements correspond). Set the corner or end posts, plumbing them with a carpenter’s level and TAMP SOEID ; stretch a line 4 inches above the ground be¬ tween the end posts and stake off for the line posts as indicated by our diagram. Care should be taken to get holes in right place and have them of uniform depth, gauging them by the line. See that the line post bases set level on being put in the holes. Set up line posts and connect the respective panels loosely. Tamp the line posts solid, at the same time keep them plumb and the fence in a straight line. It is important to have all the line posts plumb and set solid in the ground. Plumb the fence to a true line, adjusting the line posts at the bases by loosening the bolts and racking the fence either in or out as may be necessary. See that all bolts are tight on all bases and panels. Hang the gates last. It is easy to set our fence. Any ordinary workman can easily do this work. 6 ENTERPRISE FOUNDRY AND FENCE COMPANY DESCRIPTION OF ORNAMENTAL WIRE LAWN FENCE. Posts and rails are made of heavy Bessemer steel tubing. (We give you heavier and larger pipe than most firms.) The rails (1)4 inch outside diameter), are continuous, passing through all line posts, making a very strong, substantial brace, and keeping the fence in perfect line. Every post has a heavy cast iron base, that cannot be raised by frost, will never rust or corrode and will last for ages. This is very important, as the life of a fence depends entirely on the part that holds it up—steel or wrought iron if placed in the ground will rust out in a short time. Ask anyone familiar with iron, and he will verify our statement. Corner, end and gate posts (2 or 2)4 inch, according to height), are equipped with malleable iron ratchets, so that the fabric can be tightened from both ends—necessary so that the pickets can be kept plumb and in line and adjusted to fit any grade or slope. Double line posts furnished on nearly all of our wire fence, are made of two sections of Bessemer steel tubing (1 inch or 1)4 inch out¬ side diameter, according to height), with heavy cast iron bases, and heavy cast iron top ornaments. These posts are unusually strong and add much to the beauty of our fence by giving it the same finished appearance on both sides. The wire fabric is placed between the two uprights forming the line posts, preventing the fence from getting out of line. Line posts are always placed as near 8 feet apart as space will permit. Wire fabric used in the construction of our wire fence is not only strong, handsome and durable, but is extra heavy and well galvan¬ ized. We weave our Ideal and Premier wire fabric on hand looms, producing a fabric which is very uniform and in which the pickets will never work loose. (See large cuts on pages 122, 123, 124 and 125, showing different patterns.) Gates used with our lawn fence are unusually strong, durable and attractive. Frames of 1 inch Bessemer steel tubing have malleable iron corner fittings and hinges securely riveted, making a gate that will never twist, sag or get out of shape. Ornamental scrolls are hand wrought, securely fastened to the frame. Latch is made of tempered spring steel. Our gates are made to open either in or out or both ways. Specify which way you want them to swing. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ERECTING ENTERPRISE COMBINATION LAWN FENCE. Get exact location of corner, end and gate posts (refer to diagram we send you to see if measurements correspond), and set them with base crosswise so top of base shows one inch above the ground. See that all ratchets, hinges, etc. are on posts before putting on tops. Stretch line between end or corner posts, which will show you just how deep to set line posts. (Space according to number as per diagram.) Place top rail through top of all posts, couple together, keying rail to post with a wire nail, line up, and then paint all posts and railing. The pipe rail can easily be cut off at the end of each section of fence by notching or cutting around the pipe with a cold chisel, then break off by striking a blow with a hammer. Put up the fabric, fastening all horizontal wires to ratchets on posts, stretch from both ends so that pickets stand perpendicular. Line up fence, thoroughly tamping posts in place, this being necessary to make a good job. With just a little care any ordinary workman can put up our ornamental wire fence, as everything will come to you compelete, ready for erection. INDIANAPOLIS 7 INDIANA '• TT.S.A. DIRECTIONS FOR MEASURING FENCE. In making diagram, always stand on sidewalk (outside) and face the house or lot to be fenced, marking east, west, north and south on diagram. Give length from center of each gate, each way to outside of each end or corner post. Give width of each gate opening. If fence is on a grade, state how much and where grade begins and ends. If level, mention it being level. If fence is wanted curved or recessed at gates, give radius of recess or curve. State on which side you wish gates hinged and whether you wish them to swing in or out, or both ways. Unless otherwise ordered, we always hinge walk gates on right-hand side. If fence is to be set on stone coping or wall, give width and height of wall; also width and height at openings for gates in case gates drop below the wall. If cement, state whether wall is to be built before or after fence is put up. Give full information and exact measurements on diagram or drawing. All information concerning fence should be noted on same sheet with diagram, giving style and height of fence wanted, size of pickets and whether round or square. Give style of posts wanted. In selecting gates give style of picket (round or square), also width of opening, and the height of gate desired, as price depends on size of the gates and weight of material required. f/wap measure from oubide/o oi/firde of corner posts, and to centre of j)ate. <--12 ft.- -> (emelery lot with walK gite in'corner. / <--iJ.fr.-— * -6 ft .---—X -6 ft- « -oO ft.—--— —-.-50 ft.- 24 —> Outside. On this page we show the various line posts used on Enterprise Fence. These cannot be excelled. The strength of a fence depends very largely on the line posts, and it is well to observe this feature carefully. A fence with a frail, poorly constructed line post is expensive at any price. See to it that you get the strongest and best post obtainable. The set screw and slot, together with the brace adjustment makes it possible to line up the fence with perfect ease. These posts form a brace to the fence and keep it rigid and strong. The one inch square post is used on fences for walls and where no brace is desired. It is our custom to select the style of line post best adapted to the fence when no instructions are given to the contrary. One of these line posts is furnished without extra charge, with each 8 foot panel of iron picket fence. Bases or Foundations We use nothing but heavy, cast iron bases on our posts, as experience has taught that nothing else gives such satisfactory service. Cast iron is sim¬ ply the iron ore melted and, being a natural product of the earth, will last for ages. Wrought iron or steel will rust out in a short time, if placed in the ground. Insist on getting cast iron bases. Bases are from 24 to 36 inches long, according to size and height of the picket. In case you wish extra line posts, separate from fence, we will furnish either of these styles at $1.75 each. They weigh from 40 to 60 pounds each, according to size and height of picket. INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA TJ.8.A. 133 OUR “NEW CENTURY” FABRIC The structural features are here shown. The HINGED JOINT forms the connection of the upright or stay wins with the main strand or bar making the most substantial and flexible union mechanically possible. The two wires are positively locked so there is no chance to slip sidewise while at the same time the joint is perfectly free to act like a hinge when pressure from any point is brought to bear upon the fence. The TENSION CURVE is not merely a bend but a triple tension curve and permanently set in the iron bar. It is next to impossible to pull it out or get it out by any amount of stretching necessary to properly erect the fence. The above illustration shows the triple curve effect secured. In stretching the fence the center or greater curve is often so reduced as to appear nearly pulled out, but close examination shows that the tention curve is not destroyed, but that sufficient remains for all practical purposes. The great number of these curves occuring throughout the fabric and their comparative insignificance or small¬ ness is what makes them so valuable and beneficial. This also explains why the slight curves remaining after stretch¬ ing are amply sufficient to keep the fence in perfect position for all time. Examine specifications on the following pages as to size of wire, weight per rod, number of bars and stays. Com¬ pare them with other makes, and we are sure you will place your order with us. Our aim is to give you quality first, price next, as quality is what you must look out for if you expect to be satisfied with your purchase. 134 Style 267 Rolls 20, 30 or 40 Rods Each The above design is made in four weights or specifications, with actual sizes of wire as follows: DISTANCE BETWEEN BARS iNtntS Top Bar. ENTERPRISE FOUNDRY AND FENCE COMPANY Style 267 “New Century” Illustration shows stays 6 inches apart. Made also with stays 12 inches apart. This design is shown to illustrate it with stays 6 inches apart and show its use in connection with three or more strands of barbed wire to make a complete all-round fence. While this 26-inch fence in connection with barbed wire has been more used in the West for hog fencing than any other design, we note a general tendency to use higher designs of woven fence. Where farmers have plenty of old barbed wire still on hand, they are buying the 32-inch and 39-inch heights, using three or more barbed wires above. Where barbed wire is not so plenty, the 47-inch and 55-inch heights are more used. PRICES. SPECIFICATION A Height In Inches 12-INCH STAYS 6-INCH STAYS Style Approx. The close spacing of the wires at the bottom (2 and 2J4 inches) make these designs little-pig proof, while the number and size of the wires used afford ample strength for all purposes. The method of tying this knot in the perfected Puritan machines is so mechanically perfect that it cannot slip. The wonderful power and accuracy of the automatic machines bind the hard spring steel tie knot around the horizontal and upright galvanized iron wires, with a grip that no expansion or contraction of the greatest heat or cold has yet succeeded in loosening. These wires are prac¬ tically welded together by this latest process, and without the well known and unavoidable defects of the weld. And further, the heavy galvanizing of both the wires and the knot is not disturbed—the crowning triumph of modern au¬ tomatic machinery. The knot is smooth and presents no projections whatever. A deft turn in the process of shaping compresses the ends of the knot close to the horizontal wire. Thus may objects press against the smooth fabric without the slightest chance of catching or tearing. The following illustrations and specifications are presented for your inspection. TIIE ENI) POST Tbe Galvanized End Post includes the post proper, brace collar, upper brace connection, tbe brace and brace foot. When you buy the End Post, the price covers everything com¬ plete. In shipping, all the fixtures are wired to the post. THE CORNER POST The Galvanized Corner Post includes the post proper, brace collars, two upper brace connec¬ tions, two braces and two brace feet. This makes the complete post ready to set. SETTING END AND CORNER POSTS Too much care cannot be used in setting end and corner posts. The ends and corners are the foundations of the fence and if they are not right, no part of the complete fence will be right. The only portions of a wire fence that should be rigid, unmoveable and everlastingly fixed are the ends of the stretching lines; that means all ends and corners. The history of Galvanized Steel Fence Posts is a long story (covering a period of about fifteen years), and while it is interesting, space in this publication prohibits more than a general description of the post as it is today, its place in modern fencing and its adequate adaptation to the requirements of all fence users. The effort of years has been to produce a substitute for wood posts and while many forms of fence posts have been devised and various materials used, the galvanized post is the first and only steel fence post that fully and satisfactorily takes the place of wood for a post, and at the same time is backed up by ten to fourteen years of active service in the field in all sorts of soil and under all conditions. For the railroad, the farm, ranch, orchard, garden, lawn, poultry yard, parks or elsewhere the galvanized post is all that can be desired as to efficiency, and at the same time it reduces the annual post bill. See following page (147) for prices. INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA U.S.A. 147 We list steel line posts in two weights; i. e., No. 16 and No. 13 gauge metal and in 5, 6^, 7, 8 and 9-foot lengths. These line posts have all the strength necessary for a first-class fence, no matter how heavy the fence nor how severe the conditions. The line post is Complete in itself, no staples or ties being necessary. The posts can be driven or set in holes, with or with¬ out concrete. Concrete is not necessary or desirable in any ordinary soil. Often the question is asked, “How many times can the tongues of the galvanized post be bent back and forth be¬ fore breaking?” Some of the tongues will stand bending more than others, but all of the tongues will stand sufficient bending to answer every purpose for which they are intended. These posts are made of the best sheet steel, and by taking a small piece and bending it back and forth will give you an idea of how many times it can be done on our post.
