£> CU. Cfe- ^ 7 Money) Will 'Do In Three Africans become Moslems for every one who becomes a Christian. Carrying Rel lgion with Business The Moslem traders who are now going by the thousand into equatorial Africa have two objects-—the increase of business and the spread of Moham¬ medanism; their slogan is “Africa for Islam.” Christian missionaries also are tryin to win Africa for their religion by wor both in equatorial Africa and in North Africa among the Moslems themselves. It seems that the Christians should have the advantage, for during the last gener¬ ation Christian nations have taken possession of fifty-nine-sixtieths of the continent, but unfortunately every Chris¬ tian is not a missionary, while every Moslem is. Therefore for every convert to Christianity Mohammedanism is gain¬ ing three. rr tjq YourM oney Will Help in the Evangelization of a Continent $5 Will supply a village with copies of a gospel in the native tongue. $25 Will give a year’s Bible training to a native. $50 Will build a house of worship in an outlying village. $200 Will pay the salary of a native preacher for a year. $250 Will open a station in new territory. $500 Will buy a motorcycle for use in itin¬ erating. $ 1,000 Will pay the salary of a new missionary. $ 1,500 Will build a church or a parsonage. $ 2,500 Will build an entire mission compound in Central Africa. EQUALS <3*^ A ten-wife-power plow. Learning the White Man s Ways The chief who wanted a plow like the missionary’s because it could do the work of ten wives was learning the best of the white man’s industrial system. Industrial schools are teaching the natives to use plows and sewing mach¬ ines and printing presses, but other forces are showing them the worst of the white man’s ways. Yearly half a million men go into the Rand mining district, the “University of Crime.” Thousands return to the kraal to add the diseases and vice of the white man to the evils of paganism. We shall have to strengthen our Methodist schools if we are to counteract this influence, because now for every African who comes to our schools, thirty go into the mines. The medical missionary must take the place of the witch doctor. The Easiest Way to Reach Africa The easiest way to reach Africa, is by quinine and antiseptics, for the country has fifty-seven varieties of fever and a million poisonous insects of which half either bite or sting while the other half do both. The native witch doctor, who works upon the principle of “kill or cure,” is totally incapable of treating these ills and is much more likely to kill than he is to cure. The native is quick to realize the superiority of the white doctor in treat¬ ing fevers and dressing wounds, and a missionary with medical training has a double chance of reaching the natives.
