WM'AV.VjY/SAW/AWV. DIAGRAM Showing the Actual and Relative Numbers (approximate) of Mankind classified according to their Religions. Each Square represents 1,000,000 Souls. Estimated Population of the World, 1,482 Millions. “ 'y^y^'HILE vast continents are shrouded in almost utter darkness, and hundreds of millions suffer the horrors of heathenism or of Islam, the burden of proof lies upon you to show that the cir¬ cumstances in which God has placed you were meant by Him to keep you out of the Foreign Mission Field.”— Ion Keith Falconer. “I have long since ceased to pray, ‘Lord Jesus, have compassion upon a lost world.’ I can remember the day and the hour when I seemed to hear the Lord rebuking me for making such a prayer. lie seemed to say to me, ‘ I have had compassion upon a lost world, and now it is for you to have compassion. I have left you to fill up that which is behind in Mine afflictions in the flesh for the body’s sake, the Church. I have given My heart; give your hearts.’ n A. J. Gordon. (2) Statistics of contributions, membership, &c., of Home Churches (see p. 15) have been taken from their respective Year Books. (3) The chief authority for population and area (in square miles) is the Statesman’s Year-Book , 1892. (4) It has been impossible to get- statistics from all the Societies; accuracy and as close approxima¬ tion as possible have been aimed at. In all cases of uncertainty, the rule has been “ never to overstate the need, nor to understate the supply.” (5) Special figures are given of medical agents - y ordained and lady medical missionaries have been placed only in the “Medical ” category. Missionaries* wives are not included among the “ Women.” 3 (6) Native preachers only (ordained and lay) have been reckoned, not native teachers or general helpers. (7) The following contractions are used :— Pop. = population. For. Miss. — foreign missionaries. Med, = medical. Nat. ™ native. Ord. — ordained. Com. = communicants. U.K. =3 United Kingdom. (8) For the plan of the Bird’s-Eye View, the com¬ pilers are indebted to the View , published'in America under the auspices of the Student Volunteer Movement.
